Guar gum, the naturally occurring polysaccharide which contains about 80% of galactomannan sugar consisting of mannose and galactose (2:1). This study aims to transform hydroxyl groups in the sugar structure into ester groups by reacting them with organic acid chlorides and producing biodegradable plasticized materials to overcome environmental pollution. Guar was purified using a modified procedure. Solublization of purified guar gum is carried out in N, N- dimethyl Acetamide (DMAc)/Lithium Chloride (LiCl) system. Treatment of solubilized guar gum with Dodecanoyl and Myristoyl acid chlorides in the presence of pyridine converts the hydroxyl groups of galactomannan sugar into ester groups through neucliophilic substitution reaction mechanism, and The maximum degree of esterification which can take place is three hydroxyl groups for every galactose and mannose unit, hence for lauriated guar gum the yield was 0.5g and Recuperation Yield (RY (%)) was 38.09% and for myristylated guar gum the yield was 0.652g and RY (%) was 38.56% Degree of Substitution (DS) value assumed to be 3 in both products. Occurrence of the reaction was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The structural modification of guar gum attained, did not result in a significant change in the solubility properties of guar gum., Further research is needed to evaluate the gum esters synthesized during the work for developing better internally plasticized material and making biodegradable plastics and polymers.

Embelin is a naturally occurring para-benzoquinone isolated from Embelia ribes (Burm. f.) of the Myrsinaceae family, and contains two carbonyl groups, a methine group and two hydroxyl groups. With embelin as the lead compound, more than one hundred derivatives have been reported. Embelin is well known for its ability to antagonize the X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) with an IC50 value of 4.1 μM. The potential of embelin and its derivatives in the treatment of various cancers has been extensively studied. In addition, these compounds display a variety of other biological effects: antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and antifertility activity. This paper reviews the recent progress in the synthesis and biological activity of embelin and its derivatives. Their cellular mechanisms of action and prospects in the research and development of new drugs are also discussed.

Organophosphate (OP) compounds, a family of highly hazardous chemical compounds included in nerve agents and pesticides, have been linked to more than 250,000 annual deaths connected to various chronic diseases. However, a solid-state sensing system that is able to be integrated into a clothing system is rare in the literature. This study aims to develop a nanofiber-based solid-state polymeric material as a soft sensor to detect OP compounds present in the environment. Esters of polydiacetylene were synthesized and incorporated into a cellulose acetate nanocomposite fibrous assembly developed with an electrospinning technique, which was then hydrolyzed to generate more hydroxyl groups for OP binding. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Instron® tensile tester, contact angle analyzer, and UV–Vis spectroscopy were employed for characterizations. Upon hydrolysis, polydiacetylene esters in the cellulosic fiber matrix were found unaffected by hydrolysis treatment, which made the composites suitable for OP sensing. Furthermore, the nanofibrous (NF) composites exhibited tensile properties suitable to be used as a textile material. Finally, the NF composites exhibited colorimetric sensing of OP, which is visible to the naked eye. This research is a landmark study toward the development of OP sensing in a protective clothing system.

The new mathematical model was developed by studying angle of slide using N, N-dimethyl acetamide, non-volatile liquid vehicle and prepared liquisolid tablets, in which the different concentrations of non-volatile liquid adsorbed over carrier and coating material separately. Both DSC and FT-IR study showed better compatibility and stability. The optimized formulation showed higher drug release during in-vitro and in-vivo study against conventional and marketed preparation. The present work concludes that N, N-dimethyl acetamide enhanced the solubility of pioglitazone HCl with higher dissolution rate through liquisolid technique.

In this study, soda alkali lignin from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB-AL) and kenaf core (KC-AL) are esterified with maleic anhydride under two different conditions, namely i) pyridine at temperature of 120°C for 3h and ii) aqueous alkaline solution at room temperature for 4h. As a result, the weight percentage gain (WPG) of the esterified EFB-AL (EFB-EL) and esterified KC-AL (KC-EL) in pyridine demonstrated a higher compared to aqueous alkaline solution. The FT-IR results of EFB-EL and KC-EL in both solvents exhibited some changes at the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, the esterification process induced the carboxylic peak to appear in both alkali lignin samples. The outcome is confirmed by conducting H-NMR analysis, which demonstrated ester and carboxylic acid peaks within the spectral analysis. Finally, the TGA results showed both EFB-EL and KC-EL that are exposed to aqueous alkaline actually possessed better thermal stability and higher activation energy (Ea) compared to the esterified samples in pyridine.

Humic acid (HA) extracted from peat soil according to the recommended procedure of the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) has been tested to remove AuCl4- from aqueous solution. The removal was optimum at pH 2.0 and it was mainly dictated by attachment through hydrogen bonding to unionized carboxyl (–COOH) groups and reduction by the action of the hydroxyl (–OH) groups to gold (Au) metal. The removal of AuCl4- improved after HA was purified through repeated immersion and shaking in a mixed solution containing 0.1 M HCl and 0.3 M HF. When the purification led to the sharp decrease in ash content from 39.34 to 0.85% (w/w) and significant increase in both the –COOH and –OH contents from 3240 to 3487 mmol/kg and from 4260 to 4620 mmol/kg, respectively; the removal of AuCl4- improved from 0.105 to 0.133 mmol/g. This improvement of AuCl4- removal by the purified HA was accompanied by higher ability in reduction to Au metal. The attached AuCl4- on –COOH groups of both crude and purified HAs was qualitatively observed by the characterization result of FT-IR spectroscopy, while the presence of Au metal on the surface of those HAs was verified by the characterization result of XRD.

Dicyclohexylmethylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate is used to react with polyoxytetramethylene diol at different temperatures. N,N-Dimethyl acetamide is used as solvent. In situFT-IR is used to monitor the reaction to work out rate constant, Arrhenius equation and Eyring equation. The polymerization has been found to be a second order reaction, and the rate constant increases with the rise of temperature. Activation energy (Ea), activation enthalpy (ΔH) and activation entropy (ΔS) for the polymerization are respectively calculated out, which are very useful to reveal the reaction mechanism.

The biomineral-binding alendronate-chitosan conjugate (Scheme 1) was developed as a novel drug delivery system. Alendronate was conjugated to the hydroxyl groups of chitosan, thereby maintaining the amino groups of chitosan intact. By means of FT-IR and 1H NMR, the characterization was conducted to confirm the successful synthesis of alendronate-chitosan conjugate.

: Guar gum (GG) is a natural heteropolysaccharide. Due to its non-toxic, eco-friendly, and biodegradable nature, GG has found wide applications in many areas, in particular food, paper, textile, petroleum, and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, GG is often called “Black Gold” as well. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups, GG can be modified by various methods. The physical and biological properties of GG can be modulated by chemical modifications. In this manuscript, various methods for the chemical modifications of GG have been discussed according to the type of modifications. Mechanistic insights have also been provided whenever possible. In addition, potential applications of new GG derivatives have also been briefly mentioned.
