Objectives: Mouth opening capacity is often regarded as one of the important parameters for evaluating the function of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscle status. A reduced mouth opening capacity may be one of the first clinical signs of TMJ involvement. The purpose of this study was to create age related percentiles for the maximal interincisal distance (MID) of healthy children. Methods: The patients admitted for routine dental examinations to Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pedodontics were included in this study. The interincisal measurements were performed with metallic calliper and also malocclusions were recorded for all children. Oneway Anova test, Tukey HDS test, Tamhane’s T2 test and Student t test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The study population comprised of 1059 (569 males, 490 females), 3-to 15-year-old (mean age 8.82±3.06) children. The mean score of maximal inter-incisal distance was found 33.24±5.54 for females; 33.32±5.71 for males. There was no statistically significant difference according to gender (p=0.815; p>0.05). The mean score of maximal inter-incisal distance was found 28.63±4.34 for 3-5 years; 33.52±4.84 for 6-11 years; 37.35±5.52 for 12-15 years children. Statistically significant differences were found between age groups (p: 0.001; p<0.01). The mean score of maximal inter-incisal distance was found 32.9±5.6 for class I; 34.92±5.51 for class II; 35.2±5.36 for class III malocclusions. Statistically significant differences were found between malocclusion groups (p:0.001; p<0.01). Conclusion: The result of this study indicated that positive relationship between the maximum mouth opening and age and malocclusion.

The cytokinesis-block micronucleus (MN) assay on blood lymphocytes is one of the most important tests implemented in cytogenetics for the measurement of genotoxicity. For the purpose of biological dosing, it is crucial to know the spontaneous frequency of MN and its normal values in general population, especially in children, which are used for the population databases. In this study, MN levels were investigated in cytokinesis-blocked lymphocytes of 150 apparently healthy children aged 1 to 15. Our aim was to assess the variability of MN values according to age and sex. The mean MN frequency among boys was 3.69 ± 1.747‰ and 4.12 ± 1.867‰ in girls where there was no significant difference in relation to age and sex. However, when we separated age groups as 0–2 years, 3–5 years, 6–10 years, and 11–15 years, one-way ANOVA test showed significant association. Significance was obvious in the 0–2 years age group with the 3–5 years age group and 6–10 years age group. When we grouped our study population as 0–2 years and 3–15 years, the mean MN frequency among the 0–2 years age group was 2.85 ± 1.599‰ and 4.07 ± 1.867‰ in the 3–15 years age group which was also statistically significant. This difference may be attributed to age-related increase of close contact with environmental hazardous agents. In conclusion, normal values of MN obtained in this study will add valuable information in regard to update the current childhood population data and will act as a reference for further genotoxicity studies.

The aim of the study was to evaluate toothbrushing management and ability of children in relation to age and gender. The study population consisted of 75 children and were divided into three equal groups as 3-5, 6-8 and 9-11 years of age.The grip type during toothbrushing was recorded on videotape.The most preferred grip types were distal (73%) followed by power (43%) and oblique grips (29%). There were a statistically significant differences between age groups and the grip types (p&lt;0.001) but no significant difference was seen between boys and girls in grip preferences (p&gt;0.05).The mean duration of toothbrushing was shorter in 3-5 years of age group (28 seconds) than the 6-8 and 9-11 age groups (35 and 47 seconds respectively).

Background: The fallopian tubes act as conduit for spermatozoa to reach the oocyte and to convey the fertilized (egg) to enter the uterine cavity following fertilization. Problems with the fallopian tubes can lead to infertility. Detailed morphological and histological knowledge is essential for the diagnosis and management of fallopian tube disease.Objective: The purpose of the present study was to identify the inner diameter of ampulla of the fallopian tube and its changes with advancing age.Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy at Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2008 to June 2009 for a period of one (01) year. This present study was performed on post mortem fallopian tubes of Bangladeshi female. Among them lowest age was 12 years and highest age was 50 years. Samples were divided into three differential age groups named asgroup A (10 to 13 years), group B (14 to 45 years), and group C (46 to 50 years). All samples were studied morphologically and histologically.Results: The mean inner diameter of the ampulla of the right and left fallopian tubes ranged from 1.99±0.08 to 3.24±0.27 mm. The difference between all the groups were statistically significant (p < 0.001).Conclusion: The mean difference of the inner diameter of the ampulla of the right and left fallopian tubesbetween groupA and groupB and groupB and groupC were statistically significant; however, there was no significant difference between right and left fallopian tube.Journal of National Institute of Neurosciences Bangladesh, 2018;4(2): 137-140

Background: Obtaining normative nasalance scores is essential in the process of assessing and treating resonance disorders. The purpose of this study was to obtain nasalance scores in Persian-speaking girls aged 4-6 years and investigate the age-related differences. Materials and Methods: All participants (n=40) were screened to identify any overt problems relating to resonance, hearing, voice quality, or speech and language skills. The mean nasalance scores were obtained from normal-speaking girls during the repetition of the Persian version of the Simplified Nasometric Assessment Procedures (SNAP) test subtests. The Nasometer II (model 6450) was used to obtain the nasalance scores. Results: The mean nasalance score for the SNAP test subtests was obtained. Group mean and standard deviation (SD) nasalance scores of girls for oral and nasal sentences were 12.59±3.74 and 50.52±6.39, respectively. There was no significant difference between age groups (4, 5 and 6 years old) (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our results provided normative nasalance scores based on the SNAP test that can be used for the evaluation and treatment of resonance problems in Persian-speaking girls.

Purpose: To characterize the sex- and age-related alterations of the macular vascular geometry in a population of healthy eyes using fundus photography.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 610 eyes from 305 healthy subjects (136 men, 169 women) who underwent fundus photography examination and was divided into four age groups (G1 with age ≤ 25 years, G2 with age 26–35 years, G3 with age 36–45 years, and G4 with age ≥ 46 years). A self-developed automated retinal vasculature analysis system allowed segmentation and separate multiparametric quantification of the macular vascular network according to the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS). Vessel fractal dimension (Df), vessel area rate (VAR), average vessel diameter (Dm), and vessel tortuosity (τn) were acquired and compared between sex and age groups.Results: There was no significant difference between the mean age of male and female subjects (32.706 ± 10.372 and 33.494 ± 10.620, respectively, p &gt; 0.05) and the mean age of both sexes in each age group (p &gt; 0.05). The Df, VAR, and Dm of the inner ring, the Df of the outer ring, and the Df and VAR of the whole macula were significantly greater in men than women (p &lt; 0.001, p &lt; 0.001, p &lt; 0.05, respectively). There was no significant change of τn between males and females (p &gt; 0.05). The Df, VAR, and Dm of the whole macula, the inner and outer rings associated negatively with age (p &lt; 0.001), whereas the τn showed no significant association with age (p &gt; 0.05). Comparison between age groups observed that Df started to decrease from G2 compared with G1 in the inner ring (p &lt; 0.05) and Df, VAR, and Dm all decreased from G3 compared with the younger groups in the whole macula, inner and outer rings (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: In the healthy subjects, macular vascular geometric parameters obtained from fundus photography showed that Df, VAR, and Dm are related to sex and age while τn is not. The baseline values of the macular vascular geometry were also acquired for both sexes and all age groups.

We investigated reference values for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) for healthy Koreans and Koreans with coronary heart disease (CHD) and used them to identify inter-ethnic differences in CRF, differences over time in CRF, and differences in CRF between the healthy population and patients with CHD. The study population for healthy Koreans was derived from the database of KISS FitS (Korea Institute of Sports Science Fitness Standards) between 2014 and 2015. The study population for Koreans with CHD was derived from the database of the Korea University Guro Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Registry between June 2015 and December 2018. In healthy Koreans, there was a significant difference between sex and age groups for VO2 max. The VO2 max of healthy Koreans differed from that of Westerners in age-related reference values. Our results were not significantly different from those of the Korean population in the past, except for a small decline in the young population. There seemed to be a clear inter-ethnic difference in CRF. We could also identify signs of small change in CRF in younger age groups. Therefore, CRF should be assessed according to ethnic or national standards, and it will be necessary to establish a reference for each nation or ethnicity with periodic updates.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical maximum mouth opening in children and its correlation with age, and sex. Study Design: Three hundred children of age 6–12 years, from different schools of Moradabad city were included. The participants were divided into three groups based on their age i.e Group 1 (n=100) 6–8 years, Group 2 (n=100) 8–10 years and Group 3 (n=100) 10–12 yrs. Three recordings of maximum mouth opening (MMO) were obtained using digital vernier caliper and the mean of three was considered as the MMO of that child. The data was analyzed using Spearman correlation, ANOVA with post- hoc Bonferroni test. The significance level was predetermined at p≤0.05 .Results: The mean MMO for children of Moradabad of aged 6–8yrs in boys is 39.87 ± 4.91 mm and in girls is 36.85± 4.09 mm. In 8–10 yeas age group, the MMO in boys is 44.5± 5.1 mm and in girls 41.77± 5.24 mm. In 10–12 year age group, the MMO in boys is 49.63± 5.56 mm and in girls is 49.33±5.32 mm respectively. The MMO was found to be higher in boys in all the three age groups. Conclusions: There was a significant difference in values of MMO in all the three age groups with boys having higher MMO values when compared to girls. Varying range of MMO values was observed within three age groups.

Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous and most common malignanciesamong women in the world, which affects different age groups of women, IL-17 plays an important role in chronic inflammation and cancer, Serum IL-17BR concentration which useful in early diagnosis and staging of breast tumors.The aim of the study was to evaluate of IL-17BR serum concentrations in patients with benign and malignant breast tumors and study the relation between the above parameter and breast cancer development. The study population was composed of 120 samples 24 patients with recently diagnosed breast carcinoma,6 patients with repetitive carcinoma,40 patients with benign breast tumor (fibroadenoma) and 50 normal apparently health woman as a control.ELISA technique was applied for estimation of IL-17BR levels in patients as well as apparently healthy volunteers of women. The results revealed the mean age of malignant breast females was 52.8 ± 12.3 (Mean ± SD),while it was 26.9 ± 8.3 years for women with benign tumor with highly significant difference(P<0.001),IL-17BR level was determined and found that was a highly significant difference in its level among benign breast females subjects (72.48 Ng/ μL) and healthy control (50.87 Ng/ μL) P< 0.001),no significant difference in the mean of sIL-17BR level among the different patients‘ groups (49.83,64.33 Ng/ μL) for recurrent and primary breast cancer respectively.Estimation of IL-17BR level showed significant elevation of the concentration among the sera of recurrent breast cancer in comparison with other groups which perhaps regarded as a prognostic marker.

Abstract Purpose: To assess the corneal endothelial morphometry in healthy elderly Hispanic eyes.Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, observational, descriptive, and analytical study was designed to assess by specular microscopy the central region of the corneal endothelium. In a 4-year period, a total of 75 eyes from 42 patients were studied. All eyes included were from patients 65 or older (mean: 73.87±6.86), without ocular disease or surgeries.Results: The mean cell density (MCD) was 2268±597.0 cells/mm2. 44% of patients had polymegethism, with an average coefficient of variation (CV) of 42.04 ± 10.1%. 76% of patients had low pleomorphism, with an average of 42.3 ± 8.9% hexagonal cells. The mean corneal thickness was 537±38.2 μm. There was no statistically significant difference between age groups for MCD, CV, hexagonality and pachymetry (p=>.05). 27% of patients had corneal guttata.Conclusion: This study suggests that the elderly Hispanic population has a high prevalence of polymegethism, pleomorphism and guttata. Surprisingly, the oldest age group (>85) had an above average MCD, low polymegethism and good pleomorphism.

Abstract Purpose Liver elastography is increasingly being applied in screening for and follow-up of pediatric liver disease, and has been shown to correlate well with fibrosis staging through liver biopsy. Because time is of the essence when examining children, we wanted to evaluate if a reliable result can be achieved with fewer acquisitions. Materials and Methods 243 healthy children aged 4–17 years were examined after three hours of fasting. Participants were divided into four age groups: 4–7 years; 8–11 years; 12–14 years and 15–17 years. Both two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE; GE Logiq E9) and point shear wave elastography (pSWE; Samsung RS80A with Prestige) were performed in all participants, while transient elastography (TE, Fibroscan) was performed in a subset of 87 children aged 8–17 years. Median liver stiffness measurement (LSM) values of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 acquisitions were compared with the median value of 10 acquisitions (reference standard). Comparison was performed for all participants together as well as within every specific age group. We investigated both the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with absolute agreement and all outliers more than 10 %, 20 % or ≥ 0.5 or 1.0 kPa from the median of 10 acquisitions. Results For all three systems there was no significant difference between three and ten acquisitions, with ICCs ≥ 0.97. All systems needed 4 acquisitions to achieve no LSM deviating ≥ 1.0 kPa of a median of ten. To achieve no LSM deviating ≥ 20 % of a median of ten acquisitions, pSWE and TE needed 4 acquisitions, while 2D-SWE required 6 acquisitions. Conclusion Our results contradict recommendations of 10 acquisitions for pSWE and TE and only 3 for 2D-SWE.
