AbstractHeidegger maintains that the root of modern technology, like that of all other technologies, lies in technē. However, because the art dimension of technē is suppressed in modern technology, the essence of this technology becomes a Gestell (fixed frame) that enforces product-making, and thus drives technology beyond the control of human beings. The more fundamental reason underlying this “frame-becoming” nature is “the mathematical” that emerges in ancient Greece, which, through the Cartesian subject-object dichotomy, turns the world into the images represented by the subject, and things into definite objects. To escape the dictatorship of the Gestell, it is necessary to re-realize the art-dimension of technē in modern technology, i. e. to let the gentle granting nature of the enowning (Ereignis, event) re-master technology. In this respect, both Heidegger and Heisenberg were inspired by or at least resonated with Lao Zi or Zhuang Zi’s Dao. Confucians will greatly appreciate the critique of modern technology by Heidegger, and especially his view of returning “home” to overcome the possible dangers brought about by technology. However, from the perspective of Confucianism, Heidegger’s critique contains some shortcomings: for example, his ignorance of the individualistic impact in the Gestell and his unidirectional “ontological difference,” which leads him to a view of “home” that lacks “family” and therefore renders his solution loose and rootless. Only an organic community originated in the family, be it Confucian or Amish, can effectively reduce the control of modern technology over the human being.

Organ procurement organizations have been educating the medical profession on the importance of timing during the donation request process. Separating the request for donation from the notification of death has been encouraged when approaching families for consent for organ donation. This study evaluated the timing of the family approach and consent rates. A 23-month study was performed on all organ donor referrals in a 1.1 million population base. During the study period there were 203 referrals: 67 were medically unsuitable, next-of-kin was not available in 2 cases, 7 were coroner refusals, and 127 were suitable for donation. In this latter group, families were offered the option of organ donation. No apparent difference when donation was requested before or after the death pronouncement was found. Data indicated, however, that when the family is told of the death and is asked for donation simultaneously, the consent rate decreases 32% to 37%.

Between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2015, 263 of the 2244 families in the UK whose loved ones had registered to donate organs for transplantation after their death on the NHS Organ Donor Register chose to override this decision; an override rate of 11.7%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to data relating to various aspects of the family approach in order to identify factors associated with such overrides. The factors associated with family overrides were failure to involve the Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation in the family approach (odds ratio 3.0), donation after circulatory death (odds ratio 2.7) and Black, Asian or Minority Ethnicity (odds ratio 2.7). This highlights the need to further engage with these groups in exploring donation as an end of life choice, and suggests that there may be, from the perspective of the family, fundamental differences between donation after brainstem death and circulatory death. It further adds to the body of data linking involvement of the Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation in the family approach to improved UK consent rates.

Objective: to assess the level of knowledge of the nursing staff of the medical clinic of a university hospital about pressure injuries. Method: descriptive-exploratory study, approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire. Fifty individuals participated, 35 nursing technicians and 15 nurses. Results: nursing technicians had an average of 83.5% and nurses had an average of 89.9%. A regression model was carried out to verify variables that influence the level of knowledge, and it was identified that having more than 5 years in the profession increases 1.61 times the chance that the professional has adequate knowledge. Conclusion: a weakness in knowledge about pressure injuries was identified. In view of the costs involved in the treatment and complications arising from these injuries, health institutions must implement educational actions about this condition.

KNOWLEDGE ABOUT DERMATITIS ASSOCIATED WITH INCONTINENCE AND PRESSURE INJURY OF THE NURSING TEAM   ABSTRACT Pressure ulcer (PU) and incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) are lesions that irritate the skin, mainly in hospitalized, bedridden patients who are in critical conditions. These events usually present remarkably similar clinical manifestations, it is crucial that healthcare practitioners know how to distinguish them to provide better assistance to each situation. This paper aims at evaluating the knowledge of the Nursing team of PU stages 1 and 2 and IAD regarding definition, evaluation, identification, prevention, and treatment. It is a descriptive, exploratory study with quantitative data analysis, shown in tables. The research was carried out with the nursing team from Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Paranaína-MS which is a philanthropic non-profitable organization. The results from this research enabled the identification of the nursing personnel’s poor knowledge regarding the subject that guided this study. In the light of the information provided, this study supports the nursing team’s poor knowledge of the issue regarding prevention.   Keywords: Pression Ulcer. Dermatitis. Nursing Team.
