Acrylamide is an organic compound that is known to have neurotoxic influences. People have high exposure to its impacts because of its extensive uses in the industrial fields and its occurrence in foods. This situation has induced the scientific word to identify naturel components that may eliminate these neurotoxic effects. In this experimental study the influence of black carrot juice containing bioavailable flavonoids was researched on acrylamide neurotoxicity. In the study, laboratory rats were divided in to four groups. Group 1 rats were the control group. While the rats in Group 2 were administered acrylamide substance, the rats in Group 3 were supplemented with black carrot juice + acrylamide, and the rats in Group 4 were given black carrots juice only. At the experiment’s end, biochemical, histopathological, and histomorphometry analysis were performed on exanguned rats. Significant histopathological degenerations were observed in the acrylamide treated group. Despite a volumetric degrease in all brain regions examined histomorphometrically, this decrease was not statistically significant. The malondialdehyde and Glutathione S-transferase levels of the acrylamide group showed a significant increase compared to the control group. The glutathione, carboxylesterase and acetylcholinesterase levels were observed to increase in the acrylamide and black carrot applied group, compared to the acrylamide group. This study’s findings have revealed the black carrot’s healing effects on acrylamide neurotoxicity.

INTRODUCTIONWe have used an experimental model which allows the evaluation of the qualitative differences in the retinal vascular pattern by means of the labeling of the retine vascular tree with radish peroxidase (HRP) in estreptozotocin-diabetic rats. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of ASA and DIP + ASA on the vessels platelet behaviour of said retine pattern in a group of rats in t-hich the diabetes had 3 months of evolution.PROCEDURE22 Wistar male rats were divided into A groups; 1) control group, 2) diabetic rats without antiaggregant, 3) dietetic rats treated with 6 mg/day ASA p.o., 4) diabetic rats treated with 6 mg/day ASA +12 mg/day DIP p.o. For inducing diabetes 30 mg/Kg of i.v. estreptozotocine were administered. The animals were considered “diabetic” when glucemia was over 200 mg/100 ml. After 3 months of treatment with 4IU insuline and ASA, or ASA + DIP, the animals were sacrified. Samples of blood and rings of descending aorta were extracted. Platelet aggregation in IJB in front of 1 μg/ml of collagen and the prostacycline-like activity of the aorta ring were evaluated. The configuration of the retine vascular tree labeled with HRP was observed.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSMaximal aggregation intensity: 11.1 Ω in the control group,10.9Ω in the diabetic non-treated group, 4.8Ω in rats receiving ASA and 4.6Ω in rats treated with DIP + ASA. The incUbation during 10 min. of aorta rings in blood samples produced 38.7% inhibition in the control group, 12.8% in the non treated-diabetic group 0% in the ASA group and 49.3% in the group treated with DIP + ASA.The qualitative changes in the diabetic rats retinal vascular network non treated with antiaggregants showed a scarce visibility of capillars as well as large zones of tortuous vessels. The rats treated with ASA showed a continuous vascular bed and less tortuous vessels than the ones in the non treated group but the vascular diameters were smaller than the ones observed in non-diabetic rats; the rats treated with DIP + ASA showed a continuous vascular bed, scarce tortuous vessels and vascular diameters similar to the ones found in non-diabetic rats. Mortality rates: 0% in the control group, 50% in the non-treated diabetic group, 16% in the ASA group and 0% in the DIP + ASA group. The administration of DIP + ASA normalized the prostacycline-like activity and the retinal vascular pattern in estreptozotocin-diabetic rats.

Aims.To investigate cerebral hemodynamics in cirrhotic patients with HE and to observe effects of treatment in cerebral hemodynamics and correlations among ammonia, cerebral hemodynamics, and cognitive function.Methods. There were four groups: healthy controls (group 1), cirrhosis without HE (group 2), cirrhosis with MHE (group 3), and cirrhosis with OHE (group 4). Ammonia and cerebral hemodynamics (by TCD) were assessed. Patients in group 3 were subsequently randomized to two subgroups: the control (group A) and the treated (group B, treated with lactulose for two months), and they were retested for ammonia and TCD after treatment. Results. Ammonia,Vm,Vd, PI, and RI were statistically different before treatment, and ammonia, PI, and RI levels paralleled the severity of HE (P<0.05). In group B,Vdincreased and ammonia, PI, and RI declined following treatment (P<0.05), while there were no differences in group A (P>0.05). Correlations were found between ammonia andVd, PI, RI, NCT-A, and DST and also found betweenVd, PI, RI, and NCT-A and DST (P<0.05).Conclusions. This study revealed that cerebral hemodynamics were related to the severity of HE and cerebral autoregulation was impaired. There were tight correlations among ammonia, cerebral hemodynamics, and cognitive function, and, following treatment, cerebral hemodynamics improved.

Aim: This study investigates toxicological effect of biodiesel smokes on cellular system of albino rats. Study Design: Biodiesel was blended with fuel diesel at 100, 75, 50, and 25% v/v. Rats were exposed to each flame for 120 seconds daily over a period of ten days. Place and Duration of Study: Laboratory work was carried out in the Toxicology Laboratory, Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Nigeria. Methodology: Rats were grouped into six each containing six rats designated; Control group (no exposure), FD (exposed to smoke of fuel diesel), 100BD, 75BD, 50BD and 25BD exposed to 100, 75, 50 and 25% blend of biodiesel respectively. Afterwards, rats were sacrificed, liver, lungs and brain was isolated and homogenized. Serum was also separated. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), choline esterase (CEST) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were assayed for in the selected tissues. Results: ALP activity of liver of rats in Control group was significantly higher (p<.05) relative to rats in other treatment groups. Lungs ACP activity of rats in Control groups was 3 folds that of rats in FD group, 2 folds those of rats in 100BD, 75BD and 25BD groups. CEST activity in brain of rats in Control group was 3 folds that of FD group and two folds that of 50BD and 25BD group of rats. Conversely, serum CEST activity of rats in Control group was significantly lower (p<.05) relative to that of other treatment groups it is about 16% that of FD group in particular. Serum MDA level of Control rats was significantly lower (p<.05) relative to each of the other treatment groups. Conclusion: Biochemical evidence from this study indicated loss of membrane integrity, possible inflammation of cells of the brain, lungs, and liver.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the long-term evolution of patients submitted to endolymphatic irradiation as a pre-transplant preparation. SETTING: Referral center of university hospital. DESIGN: Case-control study. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The study was designed to evaluate the incidence of rejection, kidney loss, leukopenia, infection, and graft survival in the group treated (group 1) prior to surgery, compared to a control group (group 2) composed of patients under identical clinical conditions (sex, age, type of donor, immunosuppressive therapy and time of transplant) that did not undergo treatment preparation. PATIENTS: Patients were selected from amongst transplantation candidates on a long-term waiting list, some with a high level of antibodies against panel. The control group was chosen from amongst recently transplanted patients. Patients in the treated group received lipoiodine containing 131I with specific activity ranging between 4 and 6 mCu/ml. RESULTS: A significant difference between the two groups was found with regard to the incidence of rejection crises (21.0% in group 1 and 73.6% in group 2; P= 0.003), and the maintenance dose of azathioprine (smaller in group 1; P< 0.01). As to kidney graft loss due to rejection, a tendency to significance could be identified (10.5% in group 1 and 42.1% in group 2; P= 0.063); however, the difference was not significant between the two groups in terms of reversibility of rejection episodes during the first 60 post-transplant days. CONCLUSIONS: The authors concluded that this method, besides being relatively innocuous (there was no compromising of either the thyroid gland or of gonad function and there was no increase in tumor incidence), has an extended immunosuppressive effect, and can be indicated for cadaveric renal allograft recipients, especially those showing high panel reactivity.

Background: Infection can lead to delayed wound healing. Recently it has been shown that propolis which is used in complementary medicine has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study is to determine whether propolis may contribute to wound healing. Material and Methods: Twenty-one male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups. Group1 and Group 2 were topically treated with propolis ointment and Thiocillin® oinment, respectively while Group 3 was the control group. On incision wound model, Thiocillin® and propolis ointments were applied on wound sites once daily for 30 days and the mean epidermal thickness (MET) at the 30th day was compared while antimicrobial activity of propolis was studied against different pathogens as well. Results: Propolis exhibited in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. It is observed that the MET in the groups of Propolis ointment and Thiocillin® ointment were significantly greater than that of the control group, while the MET in the group of propolis ointment was significantly greater than that of Thiocillin® ointment treated group. Conclusion: Propolis is effective in wound healing. Further study in-depth is necessary to probe into clinical correlation.

Abstract Cisplatin (CP) is a commonly used, powerful antineoplastic drug, having numerous side effects. Casticin (CAS) is considered as a free radical scavenger and a potent antioxidant. The present research was planned to assess the curative potential of CAS on CP persuaded renal injury in male albino rats. Twenty four male albino rats were distributed into four equal groups. Group-1 was considered as a control group. Animals of Group-2 were injected with 5mg/kg of CP intraperitoneally. Group-3 was co-treated with CAS (50mg/kg) orally and injection of CP (5mg/kg). Group-4 was treated with CAS (50mg/kg) orally throughout the experiment. CP administration substantially reduced the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GSR), glutathione (GSH) content while increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels. Urea, urinary creatinine, urobilinogen, urinary proteins, kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels were substantially increased. In contrast, albumin and creatinine clearance was significantly reduced in CP treated group. The results demonstrated that CP significantly increased the inflammation indicators including nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity and histopathological damages. However, the administration of CAS displayed a palliative effect against CP-generated renal toxicity and recovered all parameters by bringing them to a normal level. These results revealed that the CAS is an effective compound having the curative potential to counter the CP-induced renal damage.

We investigated the effects of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on intrasplenic allogenic and xenogenic hepatocyte transplantation (HCTx) to analbuminemic rats. Ten to 12-wk-old male Nagase's analbuminemic rats (RT1l) were used as recipients, Wistar/Shi rats (RTlk) were used as donors for allografts and BALB/C mice were used as donors for xenografts. The experimental groups were as follows: group 1, allo-HCTx (n = 7); group 2, allo-HCTx + antirat ICAM-1/antirat LFA-1 mAbs (1.0 mg/kg/day, for 7 days, respectively) (n = 6); group 3, xeno-HCTx (n = 5); group 4, xeno-HCTx + mAbs (antimouse LFA-1/antirat ICAM-1) (n = 5). group 5, xeno-HCTx + mAbs (antirat LFA-1/antimouse ICAM-1) (n = 5). Serum rat albumin levels were measured in groups 1 and 2, and serum mouse albumin levels were measured in groups 3, 4, and 5, as indicators of the function of grafted hepatocytes. In allotransplantation groups, the serum rat albumin levels in the mAbs-treated group were significantly higher than those in the control group for 6 wk after transplantation. In xenotransplantation groups, no increase in the serum mouse albumin levels was detected in any group.

AbstractMany factors, including pathogens, environmental change and breeding techniques, affect honeybee immunity/resistance, so substances and natural supplements that enhance it are desired. To eliminate the impact of unknown external factors, in 2016 a cage experiment was conducted under constant laboratory conditions (35 °C, 65% relative humidity). Bees in the control group were fed with sugar dissolved in water at ratio 1:1 ad libitum with no additives, while the other group was fed with sugar syrup (1:1) supplemented with piperine (3 µg/ml) ad libitum. The piperine-treated workers lived 9 days longer compared to the control group. In the piperine-consuming group, protein concentration and the activities of antioxidative enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), were higher than in the control group. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were also higher in the piperine-treated group. Neutral and acidic proteases inhibitors, as well as neutral protease activities, were higher in the haemolymph of the piperine-treated workers than in untreated bees. Acidic protease activities in the haemolymph were higher in untreated workers only on days 18 and 32. Alkaline protease activities in the control bees were higher from day 10. From 10 days old, the total antioxidant capacity level was significantly higher in the haemolymph of piperine-treated workers. Piperine decreased DNA methylation levels significantly in the older bees. The compound could have the potential to be a natural diet supplement increasing apian resistance to stress factors.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of PGE2 in enhancing bladder function after vaginal hysterectomy. A total of 110 women with or without urinary incontinence underwent vaginal hysterectomy and cystourethropexy surgery because of grade II or III genital prolapse. Preoperatively the patients were randomly assigned to two groups: group 1 ( n = 50) received on the fourth post-operative day, before removal of the bladder catheter, an intravesicular solution of 1.50 mg PGE2 (2 × 0.75 mg); group 2 ( n = 60) did not receive any prophylaxis for urinary retention. In the PGE2-treated group significantly fewer patients had urinary retention for 3 days or more (10%, P < 0.05) than in the control group (27%). The use of intravesicular PGE2 reduced the time taken to restore detrusor function.

D-methionine (D-met) protects against cisplatin (CDDP) ototoxicity, but the mechanisms are not well understood. This study investigated D-met protection of cochlear oxidative state as measured by superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR), and malondiadehyde (MDA) levels. The design comprised four groups of five rats each: (1) a saline control group, (2) a CDDP-only-treated group, (3) a CDDP group pretreated with D-met, and (4) a group receiving only D-met. Auditory brainstem response testing (ABR) was performed before and 3 days after injection. CDDP alone caused marked hearing loss; significantly reduced SOD, CAT, and GR levels; and increased MDA levels, but D-met pretreatment protected against these changes. These studies suggest that D-met protects cochlear antioxidant enzyme levels from CDDP-induced decrements. The excellent correlation of enzyme levels with hearing loss and weight loss suggests that antioxidant enzyme level protection may underlie, at least in part, D-met's otoprotective action.
