Numerical studies are carried out to investigate pressure distributions of a fluid-lubricated herringbone-grooved journal bearing with trapezoidal grooves of various angles. Additionally, the optimal trapezoidal groove geometry is discussed in terms of the radial load capacity and friction torque.

A new type herringbone grooved journal bearing, which produces an oil film bearing pressure with a shaft or bearing rotation in either direction, is proposed in this paper. A numerical analysis of the bearing parameters using the narrow groove theory and the Gu¨mbel condition confirmed that the load capacity of this bearing and the radial load component (related to stability) do not differ greatly from those of a conventional bearing. The values of the bearing parameters which give maximum load capacity, and the values of the load capacity and its direction angle are also determined numerically for the case of either grooved member or smooth member rotation.

An asymptotic analysis for the cylindrical squeeze-film gas journal bearing has been formulated. An approximate analytical solution is presented. Load-deflection experiments have been performed on a double-film, squeeze-film gas journal bearing. The experimental data confirm the theoretical predictions. Design curves are given for the steady-state radial load capacity and radial stiffness of the cylindrical gas journal bearing.

In high speed, high load fluid-film bearings, the laminar-turbulent flow transition can lead to a considerable reduction of the maximum bearing temperatures, due to a homogenization of the fluid-film temperature in radial direction. Since this phenomenon only occurs significantly in large bearings or at very high sliding speeds, means to achieve the effect at lower speeds have been investigated in the past. This paper shows an experimental investigation of this effect and how it can be used for smaller bearings by optimized eddy grooves, machined into the bearing surface. The investigations were carried out on a Miba journal bearing test rig with Ø120 mm shaft diameter at speeds between 50 m/s–110 m/s and at specific bearing loads up to 4.0 MPa. To investigate the potential of this technology, additional temperature probes were installed at the crucial position directly in the sliding surface of an up-to-date tilting pad journal bearing. The results show that the achieved surface temperature reduction with the optimized eddy grooves is significant and represents a considerable enhancement of bearing load capacity. This increase in performance opens new options for the design of bearings and related turbomachinery applications.

Reynolds’ equation for a full finite journal bearing lubricated by an incompressible fluid is solved by separation of variables to yield a general series solution. A resulting Hill equation is solved by Fourier series methods, and accurate eigenvalues and eigenvectors are calculated with a digital computer. The finite Sommerfeld problem is solved as an example, and precise values for the bearing load capacity are presented. Comparisons are made with the methods and numerical results of other authors.

The aim of this paper is to make available to the industrial designer results of the thermohydrodynamic theory of journal bearings, by providing a simplified, yet accurate model of journal bearing lubrication that can be implemented on a personal computer and be used in an interactive mode. The simplified THD theory we propose consists of two coupled ordinary differential equations for pressure and energy and an algebraic equation for viscosity, which are to be solved iteratively. Bearing load capacity, maximum bearing temperature, maximum pressure, coefficient of friction and lubricant flow rate calculated from this simplified theory compare well with results from a more sophisticated model. We also make comparisons with experimental data on full journal bearings, demonstrating substantial agreement between experiment and simplified theory.

The present paper deals with the performance analysis of a nonrecessed hole-entry hydrostatic/hybrid conical journal bearing with capillary restrictors. Finite element method has been used for solving the modified Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant in the clearance space of journal and bearing. The hole-entry hybrid conical journal bearing performance characteristics have been depicted for a wide range of radial load parameter (W¯r  = 0.25–1.5) with uniform distribution of holes at an angle of 30 deg in the circumferential direction. The numerically simulated results have been presented in terms of maximum fluid film pressure, minimum fluid film thickness, lubricant flow rate, direct fluid film stiffness coefficients, direct fluid film damping coefficients, and stability threshold speed. However, the proposed investigation of nonrecess hole-entry hybrid conical journal bearing shows important performance for bearing stiffness and minimum fluid film thickness at variable radial load and at given operating speed.

This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental investigation into the performance of a short multi-grooved bearing subjected to a range of static and alternating loads. Lubricating oil was supplied, at pressures of up to 2000 lb/in2, to capillary type restrictors connected to 10 closed-end axial grooves in the bearing. The bearing had a length/diameter ratio of 1/3 and operated with a journal speed and load frequency of 327 c/min. Measured load capacity, stiffness, and flow characteristics indicate that bearings of this type have a significant load-carrying capacity at zero journal speed and that the load capacity is increased by journal rotation. A feature of the journal behaviour under alternating loads is the movement of the journal centre along a straight line coincident with the load plane. The extensive oil film pressure surveys indicate for the first time the pressure distribution within narrow hydrostatic bearings and provide a basis for a realistic theoretical analysis of this type of bearing.

The paper examines the effect of velocity slip in a thin-walled infinitely short rough porous journal bearing operating under steady conditions in a hydrodynamic regime. The analysis extends earlier work [1] in which the tangential velocity at the surface of the porous material was neglected. The problem is solved analytically together with associated boundary conditions. It is found that there exists a strong interaction between roughness and slip effects. A comparison with the case of an infinitely long journal bearing [2] shows that there are significant qualitative and quantitative differences in load capacity and coefficient of friction. However, the slip-induced variations in friction force are similar to those for an infinitely long journal bearing.
