The 2010’s are when information and informatics age coexist, information overload has been transformed into a mass engineering tool, “imposing bombardment” has become the norm. The most influential tool of this cultural-industrial act is news media. Efforts to educate young adults, who are most active in touch with information, in view of news media are needed. Skepticism has the potential to improve news media literacy of young adults. The present study investigates whether young adults’ skepticism levels predict young adults’ news media literacy levels. The research problem was analyzed with correlational research model. Two different research populations (Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Ataturk University) were determined for the purpose of the study. The results revealed positive, moderate, significant relationships between skepticism levels and news media literacy of young adults. “Self-determining” and “interpersonal understanding” competences - the components of skepticism - have a positive effect on news media literacy. The “search for knowledge” and “questioning mind” has the potential to positively affect news media literacy.

News media literacy is challenging but essential for English learners participating fully in the global community. Gaining news-comprehension skills is complicated by information overload; students need critical strategies to sort through sources and get a reliable grasp on current events. Critical thinking skills are crucial too, for engaging with news: from access, to discussion and participation. Building these skills is actually quite manageable, and a consistent focus on critical strategies can provide a solid base for learner-empowering news media courses. This condensed article introduces some resources and methods for helping learners develop skills and enjoy more critical, confident understanding and autonomy in engaging with and responding to news in L2 English.

The article examines the specifics of manifesting a sense of humor and emotional burnout among the preschool teachers. Particular attention is paid to the fact that manifesting the sense of humor can influence the prevention of professional deformations among teachers. The relevance of the research problem is conditioned: firstly, by insufficient studying the relationship between the sense of humor and the emotional burnout syndrome among preschool teachers; secondly by its ambiguity. Two opposing points of view on the interaction of burnout and professional deformation are presented. A number of researchers’ results reflect a negative relationship between a sense of humor and professional deformation. At the same time there is a number of directly opposed studies showing the positive effect of humor on preventing emotional burnout. The use of correlation analysis (Spearman’s r-test) showed both negative and positive statistically significant relationships between humor styles and attitudes towards humor and phases of burnout (p < 0.05). The obtained results allowed formulating a number of conclusions regarding the fact that the relationship has a differentiated nature consisting of the positive impact of the affiliate style on emotional burnout, as well as negative manifesting of humor associated with aggressive style and the fear of looking funny which are less protective against emotional burnout.

The present study investigates the relationship between epistemic freedom and epistemic violence. The problematization was based on adults. Due to adults’ responsibilities for education, the study focuses on adults’ levels of education-related epistemic freedom and epistemic violence. The research problem was analyzed with the correlational research model. The sample consists of 129 participants between 22 and 67 years. The data were collected with epistemic violence-freedom scale. The study revealed that adults’ level of accepting education-related epistemic violence and resorting to education-related epistemic violence were “moderate” and “low”, respectively, while their enjoyment of epistemic freedom in the past was between “moderate” and “high” and their tendency to education-related epistemic freedom was “high”. The authors found a significant, negative, and weak relationship between adults’ levels of “resorting to epistemic violence” and levels of “enjoyment of education-related epistemic freedom in the past” and “their tendency to education-related epistemic freedom”. The authors also observed a significant, positive, and moderate relationship between adults’ levels of “enjoyment of education-related epistemic freedom in the past” and “their tendency to education-related epistemic freedom”. The authors suggest that individuals should be provided with a freedom-based education and setting.

Social media use has redefined the production, experience and consumption of news media. These changes have made verifying and trusting news content more complicated and this has led to a number of recent flashpoints for claims and counter-claims of ‘fake news’ at critical moments during elections, natural disasters and acts of terrorism. Concerns regarding the actual and potential social impact of fake news led us to carry out the first nationally representative survey of young Australians’ news practices and experiences. Our analysis finds that while social media is one of young people’s preferred sources of news, they are not confident about spotting fake news online and many rarely or never check the source of news stories. Our findings raise important questions regarding the need for news media literacy education – both in schools and in the home. Therefore, we consider the historical development of news media literacy education and critique the relevance of dominant frameworks and pedagogies currently in use. We find that news media has become neglected in media literacy education in Australia over the past three decades, and we propose that current media literacy frameworks and pedagogies in use need to be rethought for the digital age.

Previous studies have rarely discussed the phenomenon of financially independent married young adults who live with their parents in Asia. This study examines the determinants of living with parents for married young adults who are the main financial provider by using samples of households at the national and regional levels (six municipal regions) in Taiwan. The empirical results reveal that housing affordability is a key factor for why married young adults continue to live with their parents. Due to concerns around housing affordability, married young adults are 1.3 times more likely to live with their parents in Taipei City which is the least affordable city in Taiwan, as opposed to those who do not have concerns around housing affordability as is the case for Tainan City, which is the most affordable region, in which the likelihood is only 1.07. While the education level of married young adults has a significantly positive effect on living with their parents in the Taipei metropolitan area, the opposite is true in the central and southern cities of Taiwan. An increase in the number of pre-school children will increase the likelihood of living with parents, except in Taipei City. The differences might be caused by the differences in the housing and labor markets in the examined cities. Furthermore, an increase in the number of co-residing grandparents or those who have more than one owner-occupied house will increase the probability of living with parents. The variables in this study might be also affected by the influence of traditional family culture and family wealth on the nest- leaving decision of married young adults.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the ways socio-economic issues are represented in mainstream news media and how it is consumed, understood and interpreted by Israeli young adults (YAs). It examines how mainstream media uses neo-liberal discourse, and the ways YAs internalize this ethic, while simultaneously finding ways to overcome its limitations. Design/methodology/approach This was a mixed methods study. First, it undertook content analysis of the most popular Israeli mainstream news media among YAs: the online news site Ynet and the TV Channel 2 news. Second, the authors undertook semi-structured in-depth interviews with 29 Israeli YAs. The analysis is based on an online survey of 600 young Israelis, aged 18–35 years. Findings Most YAs did not perceive mainstream media as enabling a reliable understanding of the issues important to them. The content analysis revealed that self-representation of YAs is rare, and that their issues were explained, and even resolved, by older adults. Furthermore, most of YAs' problems in mainstream news media were presented using a neo-liberal perspective. Finally, from the interviews, the authors learned that YAs did not find information that could help them deal with their most pressing economic and social issue, in the content offered by mainstream media. For most of them, social media overcomes these shortcomings. Originality/value Contrary to research that has explored YAs’ consumerism of new media outlets, this article explores how YAs in Israel are constructed in the media, as well as the way in which YAs understand mainstream and new social media coverage of the issues most important to them. Using media content analysis and interviews, the authors found that Young Adults tend to be ambivalent toward media coverage. They understand the lack of media information: most of them know that they do not learn enough from the media. This acknowledgment accompanies their tendency to internalize the neo-liberal logic and conservative Israeli national culture, in which class and economic redistribution are largely overlooked. Mainstream news media uses neo-liberal discourse, and young adults internalize this logic, while simultaneously finding ways to overcome the limitations this discourse offers. They do so by turning to social media, mainly Facebook. Consequently, their behavior maintains the logic of the market, while also developing new social relations, enabled by social media.

This research project evaluates Let's Be Safe, an e-learning application. This application aims to educate young adults with intellectual disability about cyberbullying—an issue prevalent among this population—and cybersafety. Twenty-two individuals with mild to moderate intellectual disability took part in the research. The study employed a mixed-methods design including observational and inquiry methods of usability evaluation as well as focus groups. The evaluation investigated the relationships between perceived aesthetics, emotional response, and usability for the application. The focus group gathered information from the participants regarding their knowledge and experience of cyberbullying and cybersafety. The analyses found no significant relationships between aesthetics, emotional response, and usability for this user group. However, the research gathered data, which will contribute to the development of Let's Be Safe. The findings of the focus group revealed that cyberbullying is an issue among this population.

This article deals with the concept of information overload as a crucial element of the changing information environment. Against this background, the authors discuss an alternative process for the conceptualisation of educational media literacy. By combining two nationally-based concepts on media literacy (German and Anglo-American), the yield of such a transnational approach will be demonstrated. The first section is dedicated to a historical overview. Based on the observation that humanity is currently dealing and always has dealt with information overload, leads to the necessity of coping with said overload. To this end, the second section will present and didactically reduce both discourses to their essentials. The third section provides a possible conceptualisation of both concepts and practical application of the combined approach for scholastic learning. The aim of this paper is to stimulate an international exchange on media literacy.
