Health promotional campaign as the practice of encouraging people to improve health has increased over the last decades in response to various health problems. This paper highlights strategies used by students to develop persuasive promotional campaign posters regarding the dengue health problem. Communication and media studies students were involved to show the combined results between the knowledge of health communication and the effective use of media in constructing an effective and persuasive health messages. A total of 56 students from two cohorts, i.e. twenty-five master’s students and thirty-one undergraduates were selected. Kurt Lewin’s model of action research was used to set the tasks: campaign objectives, information on dengue, themes/slogans to write the posters either by drawing or designing using a computer. The students were divided into groups where each group was monitored to record, check and evaluate their message writing performances. This study uses the Health Message Review Tool for data analysis which is grounded in the theories of Extended Parallel Process Model and Persuasion Hierarchy Effect. The findings revealed that the participants were able to construct, identify and evaluate major multi modal features in the dengue posters and persuasive elements which included: verbal texts, images, colours, graphic designs, metaphors, 1-sided and 2-sided message, firm conclusion and frames with more effective appeals. It was concluded that similar strategies may well be used in producing other campaign materials such as brochures, pamphlets, and billboards. The linguistic and pedagogic implications are also discussed at the end.

Teachers and advisors involved in the emotional business of language education feel frustrated from time to time, and if such emotions are not managed healthily, they may lead to negative outcomes such as stress and burnout. One important system for taking control of frustration is emotion regulation, the cognitive and behavioural strategies through which individuals manage their emotions. In this short article, I define frustration and discuss its negative impact on the language classroom. I then introduce a structured reflective journaling tool, built upon Gross’s Process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 2014, 2015) which may help teachers and advisors develop greater awareness and control over experiences of frustration.

Many effective social marketing campaigns seek to change health-related behavior by utilizing various health-protective behavioral theories. In this article, we review and integrate three such theories: protection motivation theory (PMT), the extended parallel process model (EPPM), and the transtheoretical model (TTM). We highlight how EPPM and TTM can be used to refine PMT by adding insight into the decision-making process involved when consumers consider whether or not to follow a particular recommended health behavior. Specifically, the development of an integrated PMT model can provide insight into the characteristics of people more or less likely to change, what happens when persuasion fails, and what can be done to increase persuasion. Developing an integrated PMT model opens new avenues of research that have the potential to increase our understanding of behavior and assist in creating more persuasive social marketing campaigns.

Abstract Background Mammography screening is the main method for early detection of breast cancer in Norway. Few studies have focused on psychological determinants of both attendance and non-attendance of publicly available mammography screening programs. The aim of the current study, guided by the Extended Parallel Process Model, was to examine how psychological factors influence defensive avoidance of breast cancer screening and intention to attend mammography. Methods Cross-sectional survey data from a community sample of women living in Norway aged ≥ 18 (N = 270), and without a history of breast cancer, was collected from September 2018 to June 2019 and used to investigate the relationships between the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) constructs and two outcomes: defensive avoidance of breast cancer screening and intention to attend mammography within the next two years. After adjusting for confounding factors, the hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses was conducted to assess the ability of the independent variables based on the EPPM to predict the two outcome variables. Significance level was chosen at p < 0.05. Results Multivariate analyses showed that defensive avoidance of breast cancer screening was predicted by lower perceived susceptibility to breast cancer (β =  − 0.22, p = 0.001), lower response efficacy of mammography screening (β =  − 0.33, p = 0.001), higher breast cancer fear (β = 0.15, p = 0.014), and checking breasts for lumps (β =  − 0.23, p = 0.001). Intention to attend mammography within the next two years was predicted by higher response efficacy of mammography screening (β = 0.13, p = 0.032), having a lower educational level (β =  − 0.10, p = 0.041), and regular previous mammography attendance compared to never attending (β = 0.49, p = 0.001). Conclusions The study revealed that defensive avoidance of breast cancer screening and intention to attend mammography were not predicted by the same pattern of psychological factors. Our findings suggest future health promotion campaigns need to focus not only on the psychological factors that encourage women’s decision to attend the screening, but also to counter factors that contribute to women’s decision to avoid it.

The development of software programs designed to facilitate qualitative data analysis has proltferated recently. Despite their potential to contribute much to management research, very little concerning the use of such programs has appeared in the management literature. The purpose of this paper is to review the current state of computer-facilitated qualitative data analysis [CQDA] in order to contribute to its effective use by management researchers. In an effort to achieve this purpose we discuss why CQDA programs are proliferating, describe the potential of such programs to contribute to management research, address program capabilities and features, describe CQDA applications in management research, and review issues researchers should be aware of in considering the use of C&DA.

This study integrated the Extended Parallel Process Model and forewarning cues to assess the promotion of preventive measures against the H5N1 influenza virus, a significant health threat that affects Asia, Europe, and the USA. There are two types of forewarning, (1) telling the audience that they will hear messages intended to persuade them and (2) telling the audience the topic and stance of the impending persuasive message. Analysis of ratings by 265 undergraduates indicated that forewarnings of the topic and stance of a promotional message on the H5N1 virus facilitated elaboration of coping-related thoughts which enhance perceived self-efficacy and a stronger behavioral intention to combat H5N1. Conversely, the elaboration of danger-related thoughts evoked some fear but enhanced source perception.

Latar Belakang.

This study is focused on the capacities of pragmatics in ESL teaching and limited to three essential discussions; first, the investigation of teaching pragmatics relevancy stated on pragmatics elements, second, the presentation of the effective ways in teaching pragmatics by applying SURE steps (Brock and Nagaska, 2005), and the elaboration of pragmatics effects towards ESL learners. It is necessary to conduct a research of pragmatics capacities in ESL teaching. Due to the problems discussed, the theories suggested in this research include pragmatics definition, pragmatic competence, pragmatic elements and SURE method. Then, the method applied in this research is descriptive qualitative in nature and the data are from the 3rd semester of STKIP Agama Hindu Singaraja students. The data analysis is performed to investigate the relevancy of pragmatics in ESL teaching, the pragmatics teaching methods, and the effect of pragmatics towards ESL learners. This study finds pragmatics is a relevant point to be taught in the language classroom due to language is an arbitrary. Through SURE methods, students are expected to comprehend the language used in contexts. Pragmatics affects the ESL learners to be sensitive about the surroundings, other cultural interactions, also how they must behave towards circumstances as ESL learners.
