AbstractRecent studies conclude that ethnic minority families in Denmark tend to be dismissive of senior housing and municipal homecare services for elderly family members. A large proportion of Muslim minority families in Denmark attach great importance to caring for the elderly as a tradition and prefer to take care of their own elderly family members at home. Nevertheless, the fact that morality, incentives, and obligations in relation to care for the elderly may be legitimized and/or contested with reference to cultural traditions and Islam has not received much attention in current research. In this article, drawing on material from ongoing ethnographic fieldwork among Arab Muslim families in Denmark, I discuss how cultural and religious backgrounds may determine and influence perceptions and behavior regarding care for the elderly. By observing and engaging in the everyday life of an Arab Muslim family, I explore how caring for elderly people with health problems at home raises specific questions about obligations and triggers negotiations across genders and generations. I argue that besides kinship and ethnicity, it is equally important to consider religiosity in an attempt to learn more about how Arab Muslims care for their elderly family members.

Abstract Household entrepreneurship is a basic unit of entrepreneurial activity, and a crucial aspect of connecting personal and social wellbeing. This study examines the relationship between the proportion of elderly family members and household entrepreneurship. This study also assesses the mediating effect of the middle-aged generation's support to their parents and the moderating effect of the parents’ support with respect to the proportion of elderly family members and entrepreneurship. We use data from the China Family Panel Studies. We adopt the instrumental variable method to deal with endogeneity, robustness and credibility of the estimation results. The results show that a higher proportion of elderly family members impedes household entrepreneurship. Moreover, the financial and instrumental support provided by the middle-aged generation to their parents significantly mediates the relationship between the proportion of elderly family members and household entrepreneurship. In turn, parents’ financial support to the middle-aged generation moderates the focal relationship; however, parents’ instrumental support does not moderate the focal relationship. These findings emphasise the need to develop a comprehensive social security network for older adults that will indirectly promote household entrepreneurship, and improve personal and social wellbeing.

On March 20, 2020, the Mexican health authorities decreed mandatory confinement, as one of the measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The strategy slowed down the contagion a bit, but it exposed the reality of family violence that has been present in our country for many years, alarmingly aggravated by economic pressure; the permanence of family members in confined spaces, for a long time; and the improvisation of areas for minors and adolescents to join remote education. Such circumstances caused chaos among family members, and the consequent repeated violation of the human rights of women, minors and the elderly. The situation generated by the pandemic has led to a review of the national, and international legal obligations contracted by the Mexican authorities, to guarantee the full exercise of the human rights of those who make up the families and avoid fatal consequences for their personal integrity. Various national and international institutions and organizations have documented the increase in family violence during the pandemic, and their results show the need to create public policies aimed at stopping this dizzying race, which threatens the dignity of people, and makes it urgent to grant protection adequate to the victims of this violence, which will only be achieved with a change in the cultural and educational paradigms of those who make up the different societies.

The current population of elderly Indonesians who have reached 9.6% of the total population is the concern of all stakeholders including the government and academics in tertiary institutions. UKI domiciled in East Jakarta is one of five tertiary institutions appointed directly by the provincial government of DKI Jakarta through the Office of the Empowerment of Child Protection and Population Control (Dinas PPAPP) of DKI Jakarta Province to carry out Thematic Community Service Program activities, which is conducted by UKI in the form of community service activities with the type of mentoring management and fostering the Elderly Family Development (BKL) group. The purpose of this community service activity is to revive BKL groups that have already been formed, but there is no suspended activity. In collaboration with East Jakarta PPAPP Sub-dept., The UKI Team was directed to provide assistance and guidance to the BKL group in RW 05, Cililitan Village. Based on the data obtained, there are about one hundred elderly people who become permanent BKL members in RW 05, Cililitan Sub-District, which at the beginning were formed having a legal management structure and various programs. However, recently with the change of management, activities have been reduced, even the management structure has not yet received approval from the Kelurahan. This is caused by several factors, including the unavailability of enough time for the latest management to coordinate. Through the mentoring and coaching activities carried out by the UKI team in collaboration with the PPAPP service, several results were obtained, including the increasing knowledge of cadres about humanity obtained from sharing and discussion activities, the formation of the management of the BKL group which was endorsed by the Kelurahan of Cililitan and the planned group program BKL Keywords: Elderly Family Development, Community Service, Continuation

In many traditional societies, women play an important role as informal caregiver. They take care of small children, family members who are disabled, old and frail. They perform their role within the private family sphere without much complaints. However when many women enter labour force outside their family many of them can no longer become family care giver. The seperation between nuclear familes and extended families due to rural urban migration makes older women like mothers and mothers in-law can no longer available to provide help. As an alternative, many urban families opt for domestic help to look after their young children, disabled family members and the elderly. Domestic helpers continue their domestic chores as instructed by the lady of the house an at the same time perform caregiving role. The important issue related to having domestic maid to perform care giving role especially in Muslim family is regarding physical contact. Most of the activities in caregiving roles involves physical contact especially during cleaning patients body, changing their clothes, prepare their bed, feeding them, holding their hands and body for therapy. However Islamic paractice do not allow physical contact like touching between two people who are not close family relations or mahram. Since most of domestic maid who also perform the role as caregiver are women, therefore the issue of empowering men to become caregiver is very important because the needs of male caregivers to care for male patients is increasing. Based onwhat is stated in the Quran and hadith and related documents, this paper will outline the need for informal care in families and communities that need to be addressed, particularly those who are Syariah-compliant. Cases from research in the relevant field will be presented to highlight the issues why men should be encourage to consider role as informal caregivers.

Keywords: gender, informal care giver, care giving, family.

Abstract BackgroundChina is becoming an aging society. The emotional health of the elderly is gaining importance. Social trust is an important factor affecting emotional health, but existing studies have rarely considered the various effects of different types of social trust on rural elderly emotional health. Few studies have analysed the role of subjective well-being and subjective social status in the relationship between social trust and elderly emotional health.MethodsUsing the data of the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey 2016 (CLDS 2016) and regression models, this study selected 2084 rural respondents aged 60 years and above to analyse the impact of social trust on their emotional health. Social trust was divided into three categories: trust in family members, trust in friends, and trust in neighbours. This study also examined the mediating and moderating effects of subjective well-being and subjective social status on the relationship between social trust and emotional health.ResultsTrust in family members was significantly and positively associated with emotional health (coefficient=0.194, P<0.01) and subjective well-being (coefficient=0.177, P<0.01). Trust in friends was significantly and positively associated with emotional health and subjective well-being (coefficient=0.097, P<0.01; coefficient=0.174, P<0.01, respectively). Trust in neighbours was significantly and positively associated with emotional health and subjective well-being (coefficient=0.088, P<0.01; coefficient=0.177, P<0.01; respectively). Subjective well-being effectively reduced the impact of social trust in family, friends, and neighbours on the emotional health of the elderly by 0.023, 0.022, and 0.023, respectively. Trust in friends and neighbours significantly and positively affected respondents’ subjective social status (coefficient=0.120, P<0.05; coefficient=0.090, P<0.10; respectively). Subjective social status effectively reduced the impact of social trust in friends and neighbours on the emotional health of the elderly both by 0.004. The positive relationship between trust in family members and emotional health is weakened by subjective well-being.ConclusionsSocial trust, especially family relationships, play an important role in maintaining the emotional health of the rural elderly. In response to population ageing, more social policies must be introduced to care for the rural elderly and help them lead a happy and satisfactory life.

Prevalence of chronic diseases and disability will increase at the advancing age. In the future, the need for the caregiver will increase. Only few studies about the expectations of the elderly towards the sociodemographics status of the caregiver found. Unfulfilled expectations of the elderly towards their caregivers may cause both health and non-health issues. The purpose of this study was to explore the elderly expectations of the caregiver’s sociodemographic preferences. A qualitative study was carried out to 7 elderly aged 64–77 years old from July to August 2018 in Bandung city. These elderly selected from 7 integrated care posts (pos pembinaan terpadu/posbindu) that met the inclusion criteria: aged 60 years old and above; male or female; capable of communicating adeptly, and no dementia by undergoing the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). A one-on-one interview was conducted at the residence of the elderly using an interview guide consisted of several opened questions related to the caregiver’s sociodemographic preferences. A content analysis was carried out. This study discovered that the elderly preferred their family members or relatives whom they can trust to become their caregivers (their children and grandchildren). Most of these elderly also preferred daughters who live with them and has a decent income. If the family members could not become their caregiver then their neighbor or a community volunteer/cadre, they knew well, and trust to be their caregiver. It concluded that the elderly prefer their daughters who live with them and has a decent income to be their caregivers.
