Floating houses or Rumah Lanting are one of the settlement cultures found in most river streams in Kalimantan and are observed to be different from several other houses in the area. They are mitigation-proof houses designed to respond to the risk of disasters usually experienced in the traditional settlements of West Kalimantan. Their structures have the ability to adapt to environmental conditions including natural disasters such as the river tides routinely experienced as a flood during the rainy season and as ebb in the dry season. This study aimed to identify the human-adaptation process existing in these floating houses through direct observation for two years during the dry and rainy seasons as well as in-depth interviews conducted with occupants of these buildings. The adaptation processes identified include the active and passive adaptation of the dwellers. The active aspect was observed from the behavior of occupants in accommodating the occurrence of disaster in the surrounding environment while the passive was identified as the physical changes implemented in the building to mitigate the disaster. The focus of this research was on some dwellings on the river banks settlement in the Melawi River near Sintang Regency of West Kalimantan Province and a qualitative approach with a case study was implemented. The samples were determined through a non-probability approach in the form of a purposive sampling method based on certain selected criteria which included the previous experience of ebb and flow of river water in the Rumah Lanting. The results showed the existence of active and passive adaptations for the dwellers of the floating houses in West Kalimantan. The active aspect observed involves the behavior of the occupants in adapting to natural disasters with the focus on the changes in the activity patterns, territory, and privacy. Meanwhile, the passive aspect showed some modifications in the architectural elements of the building such as the position, orientation, access, and function.

ABSTRACTTelevision viewing is an important leisure activity for older adults. The aim of the current study is to provide insight into the meanings of television in older adults' lives, by analysing change and continuity in their television viewing. A qualitative study was conducted that included in-depth interviews on television viewing among a diverse sample of Dutch people aged 65 years and older (N=86). The interview study shows that television has a variety of meanings for older adults. The meanings of television viewing changed in response to changes in everyday life, but this did not happen unidirectionally. Retirement, physical changes and changes in household composition led to increases as well as decreases in television viewing. Watching more television was experienced in both positive and negative ways. After a loss in the interpersonal sphere, television viewing can play a valuable role in adaptation processes, but it was also experienced as an activity that needs to be avoided. With regard to television content we found that some programmes gained importance when people age, whereas other programmes became less important or attractive. These changes in television viewing occurred for only part of the sample and some interviewees experienced continuity in the status of viewing and in their content preferences. The results are discussed in the context of recent literature on leisure constraints, leisure as coping, and adaptation strategies.

Data from the Solok City Health Office with HIV-AIDS in 2019 amounted to 54 cases and 30 of them died. The purpose of this study is to find out how Ninik Mamak's role in the application of indigenous and cultural values to the prevention and reduction of the risk of HIV-AIDS disease in adolescents in solok city. This research uses qualitative methodology with a case study approach, data collected through in-depth interviews. The results of the study of most ninik mamak have not played a role in maximally applying and instilling the values of Indigenous and Cultural Minangkabau to the youth nephew about the prevention and reduction of the risk of HIV-AIDS disease. Ninik Mamak as an informal leader who has a close relationship with the nephew must provide motivation, direction, guidance, and teaching wisely and wisely to the nephew to do it in everyday life. Suggestions that Ninik Mamak increase its role and function to instill indigenous values and Minangkabau culture in the daily life of youth nephews as an awareness effort in the prevention and reduction of the risk of HIV-AIDS disease.

This research aims to know and describe about 1) background of Syair Gulung in Ketapang Malay society of West Kalimantan, 2) Educative values contained in Syair Gulung, 3) Potential of Syair Gulung as a community-based disaster education efforts in Ketapang Malay society. This research uses qualitative research method with form of stuck case study strategy. Sources of data used are informants, places and events, and documents. Data collection techniques used direct observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and document studies. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. Data validity uses triangulation and data analysis techniques using interactive analysis techniques.Syair Gulung is a typical Malay cultural art. The educational values that exist in the Syair Gulung can be developed as a tool of dissemination of disaster education which recently happened such as forest fire and flood. Natural disasters that occur in the Ketapang community can not be separated from the fading and shifting values of local wisdom that developed in the community. As a preventive form for the preservation of the natural environment, it reinvents the educational values implicit in Syair Gulung contributing greatly in the effort to preserve the nature of the disaster. Educational theories of local wisdom and disaster risk education are important in helping the realization of a disaster-conscious society. Community communities are highly effective targets for awareness of the importance of disaster education.

The aim of this paper is to explore the landscape features that contribute towards the character of a successful traditional street environment. The case study was conducted on three streets in Melaka Historical City, namely, Tukang Besi Street, Tukang Emas Street and Tokong Street. Mixed-method was used in this study that involved visual survey, direct observation, user perception (questionnaires, in-depth interviews and mental mapping) and an in-depth interview with policy-makers. The result shows that landscape features can be characterized into two main categories: appearance and function. The Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 brought widespread loss of life and destruction to most of the coastal communities of Sri Lanka. Communities attempting to make sense of the natural disaster and subsequent destruction struggle to describe such unusual and cataclysmic events, which can transform benign physical local environments into disaster zones. Natural disasters force people to rethink the relationship between culture and nature, often using the bricolage of available signs and concepts. This case study uses data from Sri Lankan English-language newspapers, in-depth interviews and a focus group to identify prominent themes in the recollections of the tsunami and its aftermath. Four themes are drawn primarily from oral narratives of a small coastal community near Galle in the south: monster and monsterisation of victims; metaphysical reciprocity; reconsideration of mythical events; and unique corporeality. Arguably, these themes resonate to varying degrees with descriptive and explanatory force to facilitate psychological recovery for those affected. The findings suggest that communities affected by natural disasters make sense of traumatic events through descriptions and narratives that give symbolic and/or ideological agency to events in an effort to rationalise them and restore order to people's lives and place in the universe.

In order to understand how the algorithms underlying neural computation are implemented within any neural system, it is necessary to understand details of the anatomy, physiology and global organization of the neurons from which the system is constructed. Information is represented in neural systems by patterns of activity that vary in both their spatial extent and in the time domain. One of the great challenges to microscopists is to devise methods for imaging these patterns of activity and to correlate them with the underlying neuroanatomy and physiology. We have addressed this problem by using a combination of three dimensional reconstruction techniques, quantitative analysis and computer visualization techniques to build a probabilistic atlas of a neural map in an insect sensory system. The principal goal of this study was to derive a quantitative representation of the map, based on a uniform sample of afferents that was of sufficient size to allow statistically meaningful analyses of the relationships between structure and function.

Intensive manual labor enterprises in the developed world face challenges competing with products imported from countries where manufacturing costs are low. This reduces the volume of domestic production and leads to rapid loss of knowledge and experience in production processes. This study focuses on the Israeli footwear industry as a case study. Qualitative methodologies were applied, including in-depth interviews and field observations. A literature review on previous research, and contemporary trends was conducted. The field research examines challenges along the value chain in small factories. It finds that mass production paradigms impose a decentralized process between designers and manufacturers and therefore do not leverage local potential into a sustainable competitive advantage for small factories. The proposed solution is a digital and technological platform for small manufacturing plants. The platform mediates and designs the connections between production, technology, and design and enables the creation of a joint R&D system.
