Aims: This research is focused on investigating whether intercultural education is a predominant factor in the quality of university education. Therefore, it arose as a research question; What is the approach that has been given to intercultural education in the university context to achieve educational quality? In view of this, the objective of the study is to carry out a critical review of several articles related to intercultural education in educational quality in the university context, published in scientific journals currently indexed in the most prestigious international databases. Study Design:  Qualitative approach, systematic review. Place and Duration of Study: The research considered scientific articles based on intercultural education in several universities in different countries between the years 2017-2019. Methodology: The search for scientific articles was carried out from October to December, for which various search criteria were used, including primary source: Pro Quest, Dialnet, Scielo, Scopus and EBSCO Host. The year of publication of the articles, which corresponds to the years 2017-2020 was considered. Results: The articles where there is more research on the subject belong to the Scielo search engine, representing 30% of the information, followed by the Pro Quest and Scopus search engines with 20%, then EBSCO Host with 20% and finally Dialnet with 10%. It was evidenced that 90% of the articles present a qualitative approach and 10% represent descriptive research. Conclusion: The research findings confirm that beyond the rhetoric and official discourse, intercultural education is still a concept to be researched, which requires the analysis of intercultural sensitivity, to dismantle the asymmetries that restrict the possibilities of articulating the spheres of the generation of knowledge and coexistence, which allow the proper development of all students without distinction of cultures.

This chapter discusses intercultural education (in general) addressing some of its challenges and opportunities within a local context of a public university in Brazil. A review of literature on intercultural education and internationalization of higher education was conducted, followed by a meta-analysis of a corpus composed of 22 studies/documents in the university analyzed, comparing them with the reviewed literature. The study sought to answer the research question of what are the possibilities and limitations of intercultural education in the university analyzed (UFES). The discussion contrasts the analysis of the corpus with the literature reviewed suggesting that UFES adopts English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) approaches and internationalization models from the Global North which in turn, pose more difficulties than possibilities for intercultural education there. The chapter concludes that the use of other languages besides English in approaches such as CLIL, COIL, and Intercomprehension represent relevant alternatives to foster multilingualism and intercultural education in that context.

One of the major determinants of quality education in the Bachelor of Education program is the Teaching Practice component. Globally teaching practice is a mandatory undertaking, at both universities and tertiary teacher training colleges. Various universities adopt different modes of teaching practice especially with regards to its supervision. The exercise of teaching practice supervision is often faced by a number of challenges, for example, inadequate staffing which means that teacher trainees may not be adequately supervised. As such, this study aimed at establishing the implications of academic staff participation in teaching practice on the quality of B.Ed program. Hence, this study sought to answer the research question: how does academic staff participation in teaching practice influence the quality of Bachelor of Education program in public universities in Kenya? The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The scope of the study was the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University. The target population of the study comprised 12,342 respondents, where 30 percent of them (433) were sampled. Moi University was used for piloting, after which instruments were modified to ensure highest validity and reliability. The research instruments used in the study comprised questionnaires, interview guide and document analysis schedule. Data collected was analyzed using SPSS. The study findings were presented by the use of frequency tables. The study established that, other than the normal teaching load, academic staff were also tasked with the duty of supervising students while in teaching practice. The study established that on average each lecturer was to supervise at least 20-25 supervision over a two weeks period. In fact, some supervisors devised their own mechanisms of handling a large number of students in teaching practice, for instance, some of them would assemble students in a common hall, mostly away from their stations of practice. Such mechanisms can only be inappropriate as far as quality of assessment is concerned. The challenges surrounding participation of Bachelor of Education academic staff in teaching practice, such as a large number of students, remoteness of some stations as well as inadequate facilitation of academic staff makes it difficult for them to ensure quality experience is gained by students in teaching practice, and as such, this study concludes that teaching practice has not modeled B.Ed. students as expected by CUE. The study recommends Commission for University Education to come up with standard guidelines, which defines the kind of teaching practice Bachelor of Education students should be subjected into, the qualification of academic staff expected to conduct the preparation and assessment as well as the nature of the schools where students can undertake the teaching practice. In so doing, they will compel all the universities offering the degree to ensure quality standards are adhered to at all times. The study further recommends the university management to incorporate the model of mentor supervisors and regulate their recruitment, incentives and reporting in order to reduce the burden of B.Ed Academic Staff participation in teaching practice.

Advances in information technology are providing new tools for educators in developing cost-effective responses to the new needs of potential students. A televersity, the university of the future, uses information networks — with oneway and conferencing facilities — to deliver individualized education. It will mean increased access to a university education for many who were previously excluded because of time constraints, physical handicap or location problems, and increased educational quality through a personal programme, self-pacing, greater availability of experts and use of expensive centralized resources. The accelerating advances in knowledge transmission have become increasingly effective so that traditional processes may no longer be appropriate.

The #FeesMustFall campaign began in 2015 to lobby government to provide students with free university education in order to redress past imbalances. It rapidly progressed to become a widespread national phenomenon that attracted international attention and sympathetic support. However, certain unsavoury incidents marred the campaign and attempted to derail it from achieving its goals. The campaign did reach many of its targets with the South African government eventually announcing free education for the poor and working class in December 2017. #FeesMustFall has been well documented and researched, however, no literature offered a quantitative insight into the opinions of social media users during this campaign, although a unique feature of #FeesMustFall was leveraging social media platforms to coordinate the campaign. This study addresses this gap by undertaking a longitudinal sentiment analysis of textual conversations expressed on the Twitter social media platform. This longitudinal study analyses the Twitter #FeesMustFall campaign through the acquisition of 576 583 tweets posted between 15 October 2015 and 10 April 2017. These tweets were pre-processed and cleaned by removing exact duplicates and unintelligible data. The research method to analyse the “cleaned” #FeesMustFall data utilises, inter alia, descriptive statistics, sentiment analysis using a natural language programming (NLP) approach called Valence Aware Dictionary sEntiment Reasoner (VADER) and code written in Python. VADER is a lexicon rule-based sentiment analysis tool particularly suited to social media. To detect multiple changes in this large historical dataset, the Change Point Analysis method (CPA) is applied using a Cumulative Sum Analysis (CUSUM) method to identify changes across time. The research question is whether and for what reason the online sentiment changed during the observation period. The sentiment expressed is triangulated with perceived real-life negative events, such as the burning of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) library and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Hall, to understand whether online activism sentiment reflected or reacted to real-life events. The study finds that sentiment did change in relation to these two events, one on the day of the UKZN library event and one prior to the UJ Hall event. Social robots (bots) are automatic or semi-automatic computer programs that mimic human behaviour in online social networks. Their deployment exposes online activism to manipulation. A further research question addressed whether bots played a role in the #FeesMustFall campaign. A review of bots, their characteristics, behaviour, and detection methods was undertaken. The study does indeed establish the presence of bots during #FeesMustFall. The study’s contribution is significant as this is the first longitudinal study of the #FeesMustFall campaign which observes the sentiment distribution and changes. It is also the first study to investigate and find evidence of bots in the #FeesMustFall campaign.

This paper deals with the issues of education in Slovakia in the 21st century. The focus has been oriented on the system of higher education and on its current problems. At the present time there prevails an opinion that the quality, standard and demands of the university education is decreasing. In our paper we have carried out an empiric research mapping the opinions of employers of university lecturers and individual students of universities with regard to various aspects connected with university education. We have taken into regard the development of system of education after 1989 and the changes connected with it. The aim of the paper is to identify the current problems of higher education in Slovakia. The research question reads: What problems does the university education have at the present time? From the point of view of used methods we have selected work with literature and its analysis and also the questionnaire method. Subsequently we have analysed and evaluated the results of our survey.

This reflective article is based on the experiences of two years of teacher training students from the University of Northampton and the Pedagogical University of Weingarten. This article looks more closely at the benefits that international exchange experiences have afforded the trainee teachers involved and how challenges to the process have been addressed. This reflection reveals the value of international exchanges in challenging perceptions and assumptions and how the thinking of the trainee teachers changed following the exchange. This study employs a qualitative approach drawing upon the reflections and experiences of the participants through written and spoken data. The findings reveal trainee teachers developed skills specific to teaching and in particular teaching languages, and they also demonstrated an increased awareness of non teaching specific skills such as problem solving and intercultural sensitivity. The reflections offer insight into how trainee teachers, use, interpret and subsequently act upon the experiences offered in an international exchange.

The purpose of this research is to explain the importance of the student organizations and describe their efforts to improve the speaking skills of students at the Mahad Khalid Bin Al Waleed at the University of Muhammadiyah Mataram. This research uses the qualitative approach with the descriptive type. The result shows the student organizations play an important role based on their objectives and functions. The objectives are to help the foundation and all parties in the Ma'had develop the students’ potential and qualification, and to be the place for the students to share their problems and complaints, while the functions are as one of the media to develop students’ quality, both the members of the non-member, and as the good examples and pioneers of any good deeds. The efforts done by student organizations in improving speaking skills are such as by making activities that lead to improving students' speaking skills like sticking vocabularies in each class and Friday activities such as language game, Arabic debate and short lecture.

Abstract The aim of this research was to determine to what extent different variables describe the style and way of life present within the student population in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this sense, in addition to general data on examinees, gender differences were identified, the assessment of parental dimensions of control and emotion, overall family circumstances, level of empathy, intercultural sensitivity, role models, preferences of lifestyles, everyday habits and resistance and (or) tendencies to depressive, anxiety states and stress. The survey included a sample of 457 examinees, students of undergraduate studies at the University of Zenica and the University of Sarajevo, with a total of 9 faculties and 10 departments covering technical, natural, social sciences and humanities. The obtained data give a broad picture of the everyday life of youth and confirm some previously theoretically and empirically justified theses about the connection of the family background of students, everyday habits, with the level of empathy, intercultural sensitivity and preferences of the role models and lifestyles of the examinees.

Electronic learning or online learning is a part of recent education which is dramatically used in universities all over the world. As well as the use and integration of e-learning is at the crucial stage in all developing countries. It is the most significant part of education that enhances and improves the educational system. This paper is to examine the hindrances that influence e-learning in Nigerian university system. In order to have an inclusive research, a case study research was performed in Evangel University, Akaeze, southeast of Nigeria. The paper demonstrates similar hindrances on country side. This research is a blend of questionnaires and interviews, the questionnaires was distributed to lecturers and an interview was conducted with management and information technology unit. Research had shown the use of e-learning in university education which has influenced effectively and efficiently the education system and that the University education in Nigeria is at the crucial stage of e-learning. Hence, some of the hindrances are avoiding unbeaten integration of e-learning. The aim of this research is to unravel the barriers that impede the integration of e-learning in universities in Nigeria. Nevertheless, e-learning has modified the teaching and learning approach but integration is faced with many challenges in Nigerian University.
