Chemotaxonomy is concerned with the systematic study of phytochemical variation between plants. This variation has been essentially used for classification purposes ever since 'folk taxonomies', based on certain obvious plant characteristics which were instinctively employed by mankind centuries ago which included characters such as edibility, taste, colour, smell and medicinal value were founded subjectively on such chemical properties. The growth in the knowledge of the chemical complexity of plants became high from the desires of Europeans for exotic spices and condiments which provoked investigations into their medicinal properties. This Knowledge about the subject was summarised in herbals and concentrated on information about physiologically active secondary metabolite such as alkaloids and saponins. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries knowledge in the field increased and some taxonomists made use of several chemical characteristics in attempts to delineate plants taxa and to demonstrate their phylogeny. Chemotaxonomy has undoubtedly made a big contribution to taxonomic work in the past and will most certainly continue to do so in future. The valuable information it offers is best used in conjunction with other sources of taxonomic evidence and thus a multidisciplinary approach is required in order to establish a system of classification which reflects natural relationships as accurately as possible.

From ancient times, medicinal plants have been making important contributions to mankind owing to their healing properties. Their fundamental aspects such as safety, quality, and efficiency ensure the role of plant-based medicines in healthcare. Couroupita guianensis Aubl, commonly known as cannonball tree, is a member of the family Lecythidaceae (Brazil-nut family). Cannonball tree has gained worldwide attention because of its immense therapeutic values including antibiotic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antimycobacterial, analgesic, antiarthritic, anti-biofilm, antidiarrheal, antifertility, antipyretic, antistress, antitumor, antiulcer, antidermatophytic, wound healing and immunomodulatory activities. Almost all parts of the tree have been used traditionally for treating various ailments. It has been reported that C. guianensis is a rich source of bioactive compounds, specifically the presence of isatin, tryptanthrin, and indirubin is noteworthy. The present review covers in-depth literature survey concerning ecology, morphology, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and toxicological information of C. guianensis. This review attempts to summarise information relating to the medicinal value of C. guianensis to date in order to provide baseline knowledge for future works.

In the short span of 7 years since the first evidence for the existence of the hypocalcemic, hypophosphatemic principle, calcitonin, was advanced by Copp, et al., the study of this hormone has revealed many aspects of its chemical properties, biological action, and phylogenetic significance. Recently, the study of this hormone culminated in the structure determination and synthesis of the poncine and human hormones. During this period, the subject has been reviewed by several authors and it has been discussed at three international meetings. The purpose of this communication is to deal with the recent information that accrued since publication of those reviews. This newer information will be discussed with particular reference to the role of the hormone in children and adults. Consideration will be given to the distribution in nature, structure, and physicochemical and biological properties of the hormone; its measurement, regulation of secretion, and laboratory synthesis; and, finally, its role in health and disease in humans. DISTRIBUTION IN NATURE Calcitonin on calcitonin-like activity has been demonstrated in tissues derived from embryological precursors of the thyroid and other pharyngeal glands of every mammalian species tested to date. A partial list includes the guinea-pig, rabbit, sheep, goat, pig, cattle, monkey, and man. In vertebrates other than mammals, calcitonin activity is widely distributed, although its role and action in these forms await further study. Tissue of Origin Copp's original experiments in the dog did not differentiate between the thyroid and parathyroid glands as the source of calcitonin. However, the thyroid origin of the hormone in some mammals was later suggested by perfusion studies in the goat and pig and finally proved by a demonstration of calcitonin activity in thyroid homogenates.

Forensic anthropological investigations often encounter cases that are difficult to interpret, especially when dealing with skeletal remains found in a marine context. Determining the immersion time in the sea of skeletal remains is a challenge for forensic investigations and answering this would solve many cases in the shortest time possible. The physical and chemical properties of bones change during their time in water and these changes cause difficulties and delays in identifying and reconstructing the biological profile of an unknown subject. In this paper, two forensic cases found at sea were analysed, the case of a disarticulated and extensively skeletonised corpse found on the coast of Reggio Calabria (Italy) and the case of an isolated foot, intact of soft tissues, found only 9 km away, on the coast of Vibo Valentia (Italy). The resolution hypothesis of the two cases was based on three search options because the disappearance of three known individuals was being investigated simultaneously. The investigations were conducted through a multidisciplinary work applying different analyses, including anthropometric, radiological, digital and, finally, genetic analyses. The results made it possible to determine the reconstruction of two biological profiles, both of Case A, the skeletal remain, and Case B, the subject to whom the foot belonged. The almost compatible anthropometric results of the two biological profiles, the presence of two very indicative partial tattoos and a genetic correlation led to the solution of a single court case.

The role of top-down processing on the horizontal-vertical line length illusion was examined by means of an ambiguous room with dual visual verticals. In one of the test conditions, the subjects were cued to one of the two verticals and were instructed to cognitively reassign the apparent vertical to the cued orientation. When they have mentally adjusted their perception, two lines in a plus sign configuration appeared and the subjects had to evaluate which line was longer. The results showed that the line length appeared longer when it was aligned with the direction of the vertical currently perceived by the subject. This study provides a demonstration that top-down processing influences lower level visual processing mechanisms. In another test condition, the subjects had all perceptual cues available and the influence was even stronger.

The subject of alignment is not new to the world of education. Today however, it has come to mean different things and to have a heuristic value in education according to research in different areas, not least for neuroscience, and to attention to skills and to the alternation framework.This paper, after looking at the classic references that already attributed an important role to alignment in education processes, looks at the strategic role of alignment in the current context, outlining the shared construction processes and focusing on some of the ways in which this is put into effect.Alignment is part of a participatory, enactive approach that gives a central role to the interaction between teaching and learning, avoiding the limits of behaviourism, which has a greater bias towards teaching, and cognitivism/constructivism, which focus their attention on learning and in any case, on that which separates a teacher preparing the environment and a student working in it.


The authors' methodic for assessing the role of chemical and physic-chemical factors during the structure formation of gypsum stone is presented in the article. The methodic is also makes it possible to reveal the synergistic effect and to determine the ranges of variation of controls factors that ensure maximum values of such effect. The effect of a micro-sized modifier based on zinc hydro-silicates on the structure formation of building gypsum is analyzed and corresponding dependencies are found. It is shown that effects of influence of modifier on the properties of gypsum compositions are determined by chemical properties of modifier. Among the mentioned properties are sorption characteristics (which depend on the amount of silicic acid and its state) and physicochemical properties - the ability to act as a substrate during crystal formation. The proposed method can also be extended to other binding substances and materials. This article contributes to the understanding of the processes that occur during the structure formation of composites, which will make it possible to control the structure formation in the future, obtaining materials with a given set of properties.

AbstractThe article presents the results of the review of the empirical literature regarding the impact of quantitative easing (QE) on emerging markets (EMs). The subject is of interest to policymakers and researchers due to the increasingly larger role of EMs in the world economy and the large-scale capital flows occurring after 2009. The review is conducted in a systematic manner and takes into consideration different methodological choices, samples and measurement issues. The paper puts the summarized results in the context of transmission channels identified in the literature. There are few distinct methodological approaches present in the literature. While there is a consensus regarding the direction of the impact of QE on EMs, its size and durability have not yet been assessed with sufficient precision. In addition, there are clear gaps in the empirical findings, not least related to relative underrepresentation of the CEE region (in particular, Poland).
