The genus Hibiscus belongs to the mallow family, Malvaceae comprising of about 275 species growing in tropical and sub tropical areas. The various species of genus Hibiscus have been used as traditional medicine all over the world. There are numerous reports of their traditional medicinal uses in various countries like India, Nigeria, China, and Srilanka etc. to cure various ailments such as hypertension, cardiac diseases, stomach-ache, urine problems, skin diseases and many more. Based on the historical knowledge, various pharmacological and phytochemical studies on some species of the genus Hibiscus have been done. Nevertheless, there are no up-to-date articles published which can provide an overview of pharmacological effects of the genus Hibiscus. Therefore, the main objective of the review article is to provide a systematic comprehensive summary of traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the genus Hibiscus and to build up a correlation between its traditional ethano-botanical uses and pharmacological activities so as to find some advanced research opportunities in this field. The given information on the ethano-botanical uses, phytoconstituents and various medicinal properties of the genus Hibiscus was gathered from the online scientific databases through search in Google, Google Scholar, Science Direct, NCBI, Pubmed, Springer Link, Research Gate by using some keywords as. Besides these websites other published literature and unpublished Ph.D. thesis and M.Sc. dissertation were also consulted. Previously conducted research revealed that the genus contains good amount of phytoconstituents such as antioxidants, phytosterols, saponins, lignin, essential oils, glycosides, and anthocyanins etc. Presence of these bioactive compounds in the crude extracts of the plants make it suitable for various medicinal properties like anti inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-proliferative, anti-ulcer, hypersensitive, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective and many more. Additionally, this review article showed that mainly two species of the genus i.e. H. rosa-sinensis and H. sabdariffa have been explored for their pharmacological activities. There are few reports on some other species like H. tiliaceous, H. microanthus, H. asper, H. acetosella. This review highlights the medicinal potential of the plant Hibiscus due to its unique blend of phytochemicals. These phytoconstituents can be further assessed and subjected to clinical trials for their proper validations. Although large amount of the data regarding pharmacological effects has already been added to the existing reservoir but still potential of certain species like H. radiatus, H. hirtus, H. moschetous, H. trionum and many more is not yet unveiled and can be considered as future prospects that need to be worked out.  Graphical Abstract:

Dioscorea a well-known source of Diosgenin-steroid raw material, is one of the oldest tuber crop cultivated or harvested from wild in the tropical region throughout the world and make up one of the chief food items for a number of tribal groups. In India there are about 50 species of dioscorea, mainly found in North-East region which is rich in tropical root and tuber crops. Dioscorea produces rhizomes or bulbils, which are having rich medicinal and economic value. The rhizomes are used for the treatment of different diseases like cardiovascular system disorders, central nervous system disorders, disease of bones and joint metabolic disorder, disgestive disorders, sore throat for struma, diarrhea, irritability, abdominal pain, dysfunctional changes in the female reproductive system, skin diseases, oncology and immune deficiency and autoimmune diseases, anti-diabetes, neuroprotectiveused, decrease oxidative stress and many more disordered conditions. Diosgenin is a precursor for the chemical synthesis of drug like steroids and has a great importance for pharmaceutical industry. Dioscorea contains various bioactive chemical substances like diosgenin, corticosterone, and sigmasterol, which are of great market value. The current study is to appraise the medicinal properties, phytochemicals, and pharmacological activities of Dioscorea.

Abstract Background The genus Arisaema (Areaceae), popularly known as cobra lilies and jack in pulpit is mainly found in temperate to tropical areas of all continents except South America, Europe and Australia and contain about more than 250 species. Arisaema genus is being used by the different folks of human populations for medicinal as well as food purposes. Arisaema plants are used for the treatment of different types of diseases. There have been several attempts to highlight different aspects of genus Arisaema by describing it in terms of phytochemistry and medicinal uses. The present study is, however, an attempt to put together all the former data available related to the phytochemistry and medicinal uses of genus Arisaema. Main body The phytochemicals of the plant include alkaloids, phenols, terpenes, flavonoids, lectins, saponins, glycosides, triterpenoids, stigmasterols, n-alkanes, n-alkanols sitosterols, campesterol, oxalates, coumarins, tannins etc. Moreover, the properties such as antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, insecticidal, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, nematocidal, antiallergic antitumour and anticancer activities are also shown by the plants belonging to genus Arisaema. Arisaema plants have been traditionally used to treat various ailments such as resolving phlegm, dampness, and to treat asthma, bronchitis, cold, cough, and laryngitis etc. It has been found that there are several species which are toxic by nature. The development of clinical applications of arisaematis rhizomes had been seriously constrained due to its toxic properties like, mouth and lingua pain, even respiration slowing and suffocation, mucous membrane and skin irritation etc. and this toxicity of arisaematis rhizomes is due to raphide components. Conclusions The collection of data available on the phytochemistry of genus Arisaema is not sufficient as further work is required to do on phytochemical and medicinal basis. The data available on phytochemistry and medicinal properties of the plants belonging to genus Arisaema throws light on various species of Arisaema which are medicinally important and have been exploited to treat different types of diseases in the world.

 Objective: The main objective of review is an effort to give detailed information on Valeriana jatamansi and its multiple medicinal properties. Methods: As per the literature, the plant V. jatamansi is a perennial herb and found at subtemperate Himalayan regions of the Kumaon and Garhwal. The plant most popularly known as “Valerian.” The plant belongs to the family Valerianaceae. The roots and rhizomes of the plants are traditionally used to treat ulcers, jaundice, dry cough, seminal weakness, skin diseases, leprosy, and for sleep enhancement due to the presence of a variety of different chemical constituents such as sesquiterpenes, coumarins, iridoids, lignanoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids. From literature, the reported methods performed for different pharmacological activities have been thoroughly discussed and complied. Results: Most of the studies compiled from literature shown that V. jatamansi possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective activities. Conclusion: The review reveals that continuous research on this plant is needed to know the exact molecular mechanism and further elaborative studies can lead to develop safe therapeutic use in modern medicine.

Persicaria hydropiper(L.) Delarbre, belonging to Polygonaceae family, is a common weed found in most of the temperate countries including Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, and Japan. The plant is also referred to as “marsh pepper” or “smart weed.” It appears to be a useful herb with evidence-based medicinal properties. The present work addresses the botanical description, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology ofP. hydropiper. All plant parts have been commonly used in the traditional systems of medicines. Flavonoids are the major group of phytochemical components followed by drimane-type sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenoids, as well as phenylpropanoids. Different extracts and plant parts showed remarkable pharmacological activities including antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antihelminth, antifeedant, cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, oestrogenicity, antifertility, antiadipogenicity, and neuroprotection. Mutagenicity and acute and subchronic toxicities of the plant were also reported.P. hydropiperhas tremendous medicinal properties that could further be investigated for the development of evidence-based herbal products.

Grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) are commonly known grape species that belong to the Vitis genus in the Vitaceae family and come from western Asia and southern Europe. This review consists of traditional uses, phytochemical compounds, nutritional constituents, pharmacological activities, genotoxicological studies, and toxicity studies of V. vinifera. The data were obtained from scientific databases and search engines such as PubMed, Elsevier, Springer, Frontiers, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, and MDPI. In some countries, grapes used for traditional uses, such as drug therapy for blood-forming, anemia, allergies, wound care, colds and flu, carminative, bronchitis, diarrhea, and anti-phlegm. The main phytochemical compounds in V. vinifera are phenolic compounds, aromatic acids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and stilbenoids. Nutritional constituents can be found in grapevines, i.e., proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. Parts of the grapevines had a wide variety of biological activities, i.e., antioxidant, antiviral, antiplatelet, antifungal, anticataract, antiobesity, anticholinergic, anti-sunburn, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activities. The phytochemical compounds content in each part of the grapevines were different. Each pharmacological activity depends on the grapevine's phytochemical compounds, components used, and extraction type. However, more studies are needed regarding the genotoxicity and toxicity of V. vinifera.

The use of plants with therapeutic properties is as ancient as human civilization. Acacia modesta belongs to family Fabaceae and is a deciduous tree which has medium or small size. Traditionally, it has been used to treat leprosy, wounds, dysentery, venereal diseases, cough, body weakness, bacterial infections and backache. Many pharmacological activities have been reported viz. antibacterial, antifungal, anti-hyperglycemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet, anti-termite, antioxidant, brine shrimp cytotoxicity, haemagglutination, insecticidal, phytotoxic and spasmolytic. While various flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, tannins, non-protein amino acids, fixed oils and cyclitols have been isolated from this plant. This review is an attempt to provide adequate information on ethno-medicinal uses, general morphology, pharmacological and phytochemical properties of the plant.

Red cedar or Bastard sandal [Erythroxylum monogynum Roxb.] belongs to family Erythroxylaceae and commonly found in deciduous forests of India and Srilanka. The present work mainly deals with evaluation of phytochemicals present in various parts and pharmacological activities. Now a days a number of alternative medicines are avaliable for those diseases which are not cured by proper medicine. In this regard ayurveda or phytochemicals obtained from plants are using to cure diseases since long back in India due to their less toxic and side effects when compared with other source of medicine. Plants are considered to be the biosynthetic labs for a number of valuble phytochemicals. The phytochemicals found in leaf, stem, root of Erythroxylum monogynum known to contain a number of medicinal properties. Pharmocologically Erythroxylum monogynum shows Aantihyperlipidemic, Antioxidant, Aantibacterial, Antidiabetic, Antiplasmodial, Antiobesity, Antitumor, Cytotoxic, Ameliorative, Hepatoprotective, Nephroprotective activities.This work mainly provides information regarding, phytochemicals of various parts of plant, medicinal uses, Traditional importance, pharmacological activities.

Knowledge within the field of phytochemistry research has accelerated at a tremendous speed. The excess of literature reports featuring plants of high ethnopharmacological importance, in combination with our interest in the Asteraceae family and traditional medicine, led us to acknowledge the value of the Achillea L. genus. In a broad context, the various Achillea species are used around the globe for the prevention and treatment of different diseases, including gastrointestinal problems, haemorrhages, pneumonia, rheumatic pains, diuresis, inflammation, infections, and wounds, as well as menstrual and gynaecologic abnormalities. The present review aims to provide and summarize the recent literature (2011–2021) on the phytochemistry of the Achillea genus. In parallel, this study attempts to bridge the reports on the traditional uses with modern pharmacological data. Research articles that focused on secondary metabolites, traditional uses and pharmacological activities were collected from various scientific databases such as Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Reaxys and Google Scholar. This study revealed the presence of 141 phytochemicals, while 24 traditionally used Achillea spp. were discussed in comparison to current data with an experimental basis.

In medicinal plant field ethnopharmacological knowledge aggrandizes legibility for prioritizing species selection for future research opportunities. Many plant species representing the genus Onosma have been documented to be important in communities world-wide as evidenced by the numerous records on traditional medicinal and ethno-botanical information. Various species of the genus are used in the traditional medicinal systems in Europe and Asian countries especially in India, China, Turky and Pakistan. The literature on the species distribution and their characterization was compiled from different regional floras, regional revisions and databases. The information related to traditional uses, pharmacological activities and phytochemistry was systematically collected from the scientific databases including reference books, SciFinder, Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar. Absence of comprehensive literature review on genus Onosma species led to design present study and dig the recorded documents to comparatively gauge magnitude of studies on each of the Onosma species through an exhaustive bibliographic evaluation of scientifically studied species of genus Onosma that are also taxonomically identified and are valued as traditional medicinal remedy for diseases in their countries of origin. The study hinted about lack of scientific literature on most of the species. A comprehensive bibliographic review on the geographical distribution, identification, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of the genus Onosma is attempted here to give insights into promising future drug discovery strategies. Ever since ancient times, medicinal plants served as a great source of herbal formulations which can confer human civilization with preferential quality of life. Among them, some plants secured their position in mythologies, also highlighting Anthocephalus cadamba, a religious medicinal plant, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, mostly cultivated in tropical regions. Conventional medicinal system of India provides evidences regarding folk medicinal uses for the treatment of various ailments like inflammation, skin diseases, uterine complaints, blood disease and diarrhea etc. Phytochemical investigations revealed the presence of some biologically active compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins, terpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenes, glycosides, sterols, amides and fatty acids and these compounds were found to be accountable for various pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticancerous, antidibetic, hypolipidemic, antihepatotoxic, antidiarrhoel, diuretic, laxative, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, wound healing etc.
