Ever since ancient times, medicinal plants served as a great source of herbal formulations which can confer human civilization with preferential quality of life. Among them, some plants secured their position in mythologies, also highlighting Anthocephalus cadamba, a religious medicinal plant, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, mostly cultivated in tropical regions. Conventional medicinal system of India provides evidences regarding folk medicinal uses for the treatment of various ailments like inflammation, skin diseases, uterine complaints, blood disease and diarrhea etc. Phytochemical investigations revealed the presence of some biologically active compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins, terpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenes, glycosides, sterols, amides and fatty acids and these compounds were found to be accountable for various pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticancerous, antidibetic, hypolipidemic, antihepatotoxic, antidiarrhoel, diuretic, laxative, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, wound healing etc.

Background: Plants of the genus Inula are perennial herbs of the family Asteraceae. This genus includes more than 100 species, widely distributed throughout Europe, Africa and Asia including India. Many of them are indicated in traditional medicine, e.g., in Ayurveda. This review explores chemical constituents, medicinal uses and pharmacological actions of Inula species. Methods: Major databases and research and review articles retrieved through Scopus, Web of Science, and Medline were consulted to obtain information on the pharmacological activities of the genus Inula published from 1994 to 2017. Results: Inula species are used either alone or as an important ingredient of various formulations to cure dysfunctions of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, urinary system, central nervous system and digestive system, and for the treatment of asthma, diabetes, cancers, skin disorders, hepatic disease, fungal and bacterial infections. A range of phytochemicals including alkaloids, essential and volatile oils, flavonoids, terpenes, and lactones has been isolated from herbs of the genus Inula, which might possibly explain traditional uses of these plants. Conclusion: The present review is focused on chemical constituents, medicinal uses and pharmacological actions of Inula species and provides valuable insight into its medicinal potential.

Background: Morus alba Linn. commonly known as white mulberry, belongs to the family Moraceae, is a promising traditional medicine. In Asia, besides its use in the preparation of delicacies, every part of this plant is utilized in traditional medicine. Over the past decade, studies related to identification and isolation of biologically active compounds, with flavonoids as the major class of phytoconstituents, from this plant has been reported. These phytoconstituents are not only found to be beneficial for the maintenance of general health but also are associated with a range of potential pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anticancer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, neuroprotective to name a few. Objective: This review aims to provide upgraded and comprehensive information regarding the phytochemical, ethnomedicinal use and pharmacological profile of the plant Morus alba Linn. Method: The significant information has been collected through various database viz. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct based on the recent findings, using different terms of Morus alba. Results: The outcome of the study suggests that Morus alba is a multifunctional plant numerous phytochemicals, and possess a range of pharmacological activities. Conclusion: The data assembled on Morus alba will be beneficial to trigger research in various fields of pharmaceutical and allied science to explore the medicinal importance of this unique plant.

 Objective: The main objective of review is an effort to give detailed information on Valeriana jatamansi and its multiple medicinal properties. Methods: As per the literature, the plant V. jatamansi is a perennial herb and found at subtemperate Himalayan regions of the Kumaon and Garhwal. The plant most popularly known as “Valerian.” The plant belongs to the family Valerianaceae. The roots and rhizomes of the plants are traditionally used to treat ulcers, jaundice, dry cough, seminal weakness, skin diseases, leprosy, and for sleep enhancement due to the presence of a variety of different chemical constituents such as sesquiterpenes, coumarins, iridoids, lignanoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids. From literature, the reported methods performed for different pharmacological activities have been thoroughly discussed and complied. Results: Most of the studies compiled from literature shown that V. jatamansi possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective activities. Conclusion: The review reveals that continuous research on this plant is needed to know the exact molecular mechanism and further elaborative studies can lead to develop safe therapeutic use in modern medicine.

Ethnobotany is the scientific study concerned with the study of relationship between plants and man, in particular, how people use their traditional knowledge with respect to utilization of plant resources for their wellbeing. Plants have been extensively used since time immemorial as an indispensible source such as food, fodder, medicine, dyes, flavoring agents and for construction purposes. The genus Clerodendrum is one of the largest plant genera, belongs to the family Lamiaceae and encompasses herbs, shrubs and trees distributed worldwide. Clerodendrum infortunatum L. (synonym Clerodendrum viscosum Vent.) is one among the important species of the genus Clerodendrum. In the present review, we discuss the traditional (ethnobotanical) uses and pharmacological activities displayed by C. infortunatum. An extensive literature survey revealed that various parts of C. infortunatum are used traditionally by various indigenous communities as green salad, as an ingredient in local wine and to treat ailments or disorders such as headache, toothache, rheumatism, swelling, skin diseases, fever, diabetes, malaria, burns, tumor and epilepsy. Literatures revealed various pharmacological properties exhibited by the plant such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, wound healing, antivenom, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, anthelmintic, insecticidal, thrombolytic and cytotoxic activities.  Keywords: Clerodendrum infortunatum L., Lamiaceae, Ethnobotany, Phytochemistry, Pharmacological activities

Dioscorea a well-known source of Diosgenin-steroid raw material, is one of the oldest tuber crop cultivated or harvested from wild in the tropical region throughout the world and make up one of the chief food items for a number of tribal groups. In India there are about 50 species of dioscorea, mainly found in North-East region which is rich in tropical root and tuber crops. Dioscorea produces rhizomes or bulbils, which are having rich medicinal and economic value. The rhizomes are used for the treatment of different diseases like cardiovascular system disorders, central nervous system disorders, disease of bones and joint metabolic disorder, disgestive disorders, sore throat for struma, diarrhea, irritability, abdominal pain, dysfunctional changes in the female reproductive system, skin diseases, oncology and immune deficiency and autoimmune diseases, anti-diabetes, neuroprotectiveused, decrease oxidative stress and many more disordered conditions. Diosgenin is a precursor for the chemical synthesis of drug like steroids and has a great importance for pharmaceutical industry. Dioscorea contains various bioactive chemical substances like diosgenin, corticosterone, and sigmasterol, which are of great market value. The current study is to appraise the medicinal properties, phytochemicals, and pharmacological activities of Dioscorea.

The lemon plant (Citrus limon L.) is a species from the Rutaceae family that spread from Southeast Asia and spread to all countries in the world. Lemon has been used traditionally since ancient times to treat various diseases and has been tested for various pharmacological activities. The literature review was carried out to study the phytochemical compounds and pharmacological activities of lemon plants. The literature compiled by a minimum of 50 scientific articles using search engines such as Science Direct, Pubmed, and Google Scholar, published for a maximum of the last 10 years, includes a minimum of 20 articles in the last 2 years, has a DOI, and the quality of the journal index is reviewed using Scimago. Lemon is very rich in phytochemical compounds, including flavanones such as hesperidin, eriocytrin, naringin, narirutin, didymin; flavones such as apigenin, luteolin, and diosmin; flavonols such as routine, quercetin, mirisetin, isositrol, limositrol, and limositrin; terpenoids such as limonene, limonoids, and carotenoids. Various kinds of in vivo and in vitro studies provide results of various pharmacological activities such as antioxidants, anticancer, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antihyperlipidemic, antiurolithiasis, and antiplasmodial. It is necessary to develop further research on the pharmacological activity of lemon plants in the future.

: Dihydro[1,3]oxazines are an important class of heterocyclic compounds having a wide range of biological and material properties. Medicinally, they possess diverse pharmacological activities such as bactericidal, fungicidal, microbiocidal, antitumor, anti-HIV and anti-inflammatory agents. Apart from being biologically active, they are materially useful for making polybenzoxazines. Polybenzoxazines, a novel class of non-conjugated thermosetting materials that belong to the family of addition-curable phenolic resins. They have lucrative properties such as small shrinkage in curing, low water absorption, good thermal stability, no release of volatile materials during cure, no need for catalyst and inexpensive raw materials. Further, the flexibility in designing a monomer gives polybenzoxazines an additional edge over ordinary phenolic resins. This review briefly describes the syntheses including eco-friendly strategies, biological and material significance of various dihydro[1,3]oxazine derivatives.

Background:Medicinal plants are rich source of large variety of lead compounds. The plants of genus Glycosmis or its different parts valued for its therapeutic and medicinal qualities. Glycosmis belongs to the family Rutaceae.Objective:The genus Glycosmis is a rich source of pharmacologically and biologically active secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic glycosides, quinones, terpenoids, glycerides isolated from different parts of Glycosmis plant. The objectives of this review is to provide updatedand complete information on the distribution, phytochemical, pharmacological, and toxicity research of Glycosmis species.Results:About 233 phytoconstituents are isolated from this genus. Recent interest in this genus has focused on isolating and identifying of different phytoconstituents that exhibit potent antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and anticancer activities. They show good cytotoxic activity against various cancer cell lines and also reported for good antiviral and immunomodulatory activity. In this support convincing evidence in experimental animal models are available.Conclusion:This review summarizes information about the isolated compounds their bioactivities related to same compounds present in other plants including pharmacological activities of plant extract of Glycosmis genus.

Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth is a herb belonging to the family Piperaceae. In this review, an extensive literature survey was carried out to compile information available on medicinal uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of P. pellucida. The plant is used as food, flavoring agent and as medicine. The plant is used as medicine for treating various ailments or disorders such as asthma, rheumatism, wound, fever, stomach problems, kidney infection, hemorrhoid pain, joint pain, hypertension, diarrhea, snake bite and measles. The plant contains phytochemical groups such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, steroids and glycosides. Compounds such as dill apiole, phytol, stigmasterol, sitosterol, secolignans, tetrahydrofuran lignans, highly methoxylated dihydronaphthalenone, peperomins, sesamin and isoswertisin have been identified in the plant. Studies have shown that the plant exhibited several pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, neuropharmacological, antisickling, anticancer, enzyme inhibitory, antiulcer, hypotensive, immunostimulatory, fracture healing and antidiabetic activities which support the traditional use of the plant. Purified chemicals from the plant have also shown to exhibit certain pharmacological activities such as antiulcer, anticancer and antimicrobial activity. By this extensive literature review, it can be concluded that P. pellucida can be utilized as a promising candidate for developing newer drugs with potent pharmacological activities.
