In one of the first and best-known collections of cultural criticism in America, Civilization in the United States (1922), Harold Stearns begins his chapter on “The Intellectual Life” with this widely quoted passage:When Professor Einstein roused the ire of the women's clubs by stating that “women dominate the entire life of America,” and that “there are cities with a million population, but cities suffering from terrible poverty – the poverty of intellectual things,” he was but repeating a criticism of our life now old enough to be almost a cliché. Hardly any intelligent foreigner has failed to observe and comment upon the extraordinary feminization of American social life, and oftenest he has coupled this observation with a few biting remarks concerning the intellectual anaemia or torpor that seems to accompany it.

The data source is the prince, traditional leaders, Nagari custom, traditional Alam Minangkabau, Bundo Kanduang, religious leaders and society. Data analyzed refers to the analysis of qualitative data presented by Alwasilah (2002). The results showed that the global concept of democracy can be united with the democracy education system brought by traditional communities. That is, people's understanding of democracy education not only refers to the idea of West democracy. However, the custom values of society can be used as the basis democratic education for Minangkabau society of the present and future. The result also shows that the Minangkabau community has first implemented democracy based on traditional values long before Western democracy applied in Indonesia, especially in Minangkabau.

In the social life, the religion have two faces: conflict and peace. Conflict arises in many reasons, one of them is ethnocentric views. Peace condition comes because all of religion advocates to living in harmony.  The two phenomena were studied  in the discussion of the religious leaders in the Organization of the Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) Central Java.  Result of the workshop are: (1) to avoid conflict, do not take ethnocentric views; (2). It has been pointed out by Minns, Rostovtzeff, and other scholars that social life in the Greek cities on the northern shore of the Black Sea was very highly developed and therefore the opportunity was given for adorning sanctuaries and public buildings with sculptured monuments. A signature of Praxiteles found in Olbia proves that even the most eminent Greek masters worked for the Far East of the ancient world. It is true, very few fragments are preserved, but among them are specimens of very high quality, worth more attention than has hitherto been paid to them. I cannot agree therefore with Minns, who thinks that ‘the few marble statues are of very little value’ and ‘would scarcely claim attention elsewhere.’ The fragments are indeed in a very bad state of preservation, but this fact must not influence the judgment upon their artistic value. It is a pity also that the remains of ancient sculpture found in South Russia are not sufficiently published. The fragments scattered in different local museums must be collected and studied anew, as there probably are works of very great importance to be discovered. Further investigations, I am sure, will offer many surprises and will compel us to change entirely our view upon ancient sculpture in the Black Sea colonies. Such a surprise was the grave-relief of the early fifth century from Olbia, published by Pharmakovski; another was the colossal statue from Kertch discovered in the depot of the Hermitage, a masterpiece of high rank closely akin to the Maussollos.

The blue color on the Ottoman ceramic artifacts can be studied from the perspectives of different sciences: in terms of color aesthetics, which is a kind of philosophy of beauty, or as part of the science of photography and graphics. Additionally, for some communities the importance of this color lies at the heart of anthropology, but it is also at the core Islamic art and archeology. Blue is one of the original colors that humans have known since ancient times. It is associated with the elements of nature as it symbolizes the sky, sea, and serenity. This color is especially important in popular beliefs as we find a lot of amulets that use the blue color especially those which are believed to avert the eyes of envy. The blue color has appeared on many of the Ottoman Islamic artifacts, especially ceramic artifacts, since ceramics were among the most used materials in life which expressed the social and intellectual life of both artists and manufacturers. The research will analyze the importance of the blue color of ceramic artifacts in the study of heritage and archaeology and how these blue decorative elements on these ceramic pieces relate to social life.

While materialism largely failed in achieving humanity’s essential goal of attaining happiness in life, as it intensified people’s attachment to the material world, spirituality represents an alternative way towards accomplishing ultimate joy. Multiple approaches have brought the value of spirituality. Classical saintly experience and practice have played a significant role in Islamic spirituality and became in its various forms integrated into social, political, and intellectual life. This paper discusses the ascetic practices of Sufis in approaching the ultimate spiritual goal of inner purification. While classical Sufism’s disciplinary methods have varied significantly across time and place, in many cases, these practices revolve around obedience and asceticism. It then discusses the unique attributes Sufi saints are characterized that speak to the existence of more profound dimensions of reality such as Wilāya and Baraka and their impact on social life.
