Drought and salinity are major important factors that restrain growth and productivity of rice. In plants, many really interesting new gene (RING) finger proteins have been reported to enhance drought and salt tolerance. However, their mode of action and interacting substrates are largely unknown. Here, we identified a new small RING-H2 type E3 ligase OsRF1, which is involved in the ABA and stress responses of rice. OsRF1 transcripts were highly induced by ABA, salt, or drought treatment. Upregulation of OsRF1 in transgenic rice conferred drought and salt tolerance and increased endogenous ABA levels. Consistent with this, faster transcriptional activation of key ABA biosynthetic genes, ZEP, NCED3, and ABA4, was observed in OsRF1-OE plants compared with wild type in response to drought stress. Yeast two-hybrid assay, BiFC, and co-immunoprecipitation analysis identified clade A PP2C proteins as direct interacting partners with OsRF1. In vitro ubiquitination assay indicated that OsRF1 exhibited E3 ligase activity, and that it targeted OsPP2C09 protein for ubiquitination and degradation. Cell-free degradation assay further showed that the OsPP2C09 protein is more rapidly degraded by ABA in the OsRF1-OE rice than in the wild type. The combined results suggested that OsRF1 is a positive player of stress responses by modulating protein stability of clade A PP2C proteins, negative regulators of ABA signaling.

Abstract Introduction and hypothesis The objective was to predict the successful ring pessary size based on the levator hiatal area (HA). Methods This is a prospective case–control study. Women with symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) choosing pessary treatment were included. All women underwent an interview, clinical examination, and 3D/4D transperineal ultrasound (TPUS). The ring pessary size used in each trial and the reason for unsuccessful trials were recorded. In addition, levator hiatal area divided by ring pessary size (HARP ratio) was measured at rest, maximum contraction, and maximum Valsalva. The HARP ratios of successful and unsuccessful trials were compared, receiver operating characteristic curves in the prediction of successful trials were constructed, and the cut-off optimizing sensitivity and specificity was identified. Results A total of 162 women were assessed and 106 were included with 77 successful trials, 49 unsuccessful trials owing to dislodgment or failure to relieve POP symptoms, and 20 unsuccessful trials owing to pain/discomfort. Rest HARP ratio and Valsalva HARP ratio were significantly smaller in the successful trials versus dislodgment/failure to relieve POP symptoms trials (mean rest HARP ratio [SD]: 2.93 [0.59] vs 3.24 [0.67], p = 0.021; median Valsalva HARP ratio (IQR): 4.65 (1.56) vs 5.32 (2.08), p = 0.004). No significant difference was observed between pain/discomfort trials and successful trials. The best cut-off for the prediction of successful trials was Valsalva HARP ratio ≤ 5.00. Conclusions Unsuccessful fitting trials due to dislodgment/failure to relieve POP symptoms are associated with a small ring pessary with respect to the levator HA. A ring pessary that produces a Valsalva HARP ratio > 5.00 has a higher risk of dislodgment/failure to relieve POP symptoms.

A new type of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) developed from conventional substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) using ring slots and vias is proposed in this paper. The asymptotic frequency and lower cutoff frequency of the SSPP structure can be easily tuned by changing the width of SIW walls and radius of the ring slot, respectively. A trapezoidal microstrip line and a small ring slot are used for the efficient mode conversion to smoothly transit from microstrip line to the proposed SSPP structure. The presented SSPPs have a flat bandpass filtering response with adjustable center frequency and bandwidth. In order to better verify the transmission and cutoff characteristics, two bandpass filters using the proposed SSPPs with relative bandwidths of 61.7% and 76.4%, respectively, are fabricated and measured. Good agreement between the simulations and measurements verifies the proposed design idea.

As a kind of renewable resources with abundant reserves, research on the utilization of biochar has been paid more and more attention. However, the use of pomelo peel biomass carbon in the field of eletromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) has never been reported. In this study, the pomelo peel of natural recovery were carbonized at temperature of 700°C for 1 h in a high vacuum of 300 pa. The as-prepared biomass carbon were uniformly mixed with the paraffin by heat-assisted impregnation to prepare small ring-shaped devices, and the EWA characteristics of the small devices were investigated. The absorbing measurements were performed with the filling mass fraction of 30% and 50% of the biochar, respectively. The biochar with a mass fraction of 50% showed the excellent absorbing properties with the maximum reflection loss up to –44.3 dB at 9.84 GHz in the thickness of 2.0 mm, which is expected to be used as light, broadband and efficient EWA material.

: Aziridines are the saturated three-membered cyclic amines that constitute an important group of synthetic intermediates. These could act as a precursor for diverse organic compounds owing to the reactivity due to the ring strain associated with them. The outstanding property of aziridines is their high reactivity towards various nucleophilic and electrophilic reagents to acquire more stable ring-opened or ring-expanded amines that could be obtained from the release of strain energy intrinsic in a small ring. As such, aziridines could be used in the synthesis of 4-7 membered heterocycles of biological and industrial significance, such as azetidines, imidazoles, thiazoles, pyrazines, pyrimidines, benzothiazines, benzodiazepines, etc. Earlier synthesis of aziridines was considered a laborious task due to their instability. However, various synthetic approaches leading to the formation of aziridines are now available in the literature. Recently, green, cost-effective and approaches based on simpler work-up for these reactions have attracted researcher's attention. This review article deals with synthetic routes of aziridines and aziridine applications in organic synthesis.

AbstractTranscranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used aiming to boost exercise performance and inconsistent findings have been reported. One possible explanation is related to the limitations of the so-called “conventional” tDCS, which uses large rectangular electrodes, resulting in a diffuse electric field. A new tDCS technique called high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) has been recently developed. HD-tDCS uses small ring electrodes and produces improved focality and greater magnitude of its aftereffects. This study tested whether HD-tDCS would improve exercise performance to a greater extent than conventional tDCS. Twelve endurance athletes (29.4 ± 7.3 years; 60.15 ± 5.09 ml kg−1 min−1) were enrolled in this single-center, randomized, crossover, and sham-controlled trial. To test reliability, participants performed two time to exhaustion (TTE) tests (control conditions) on a cycle simulator with 80% of peak power until volitional exhaustion. Next, they randomly received HD-tDCS (2.4 mA), conventional (2.0 mA), or active sham tDCS (2.0 mA) over the motor cortex for 20-min before performing the TTE test. TTE, heart rate (HR), associative thoughts, peripheral (lower limbs), and whole-body ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded every minute. Outcome measures were reliable. There was no difference in TTE between HD-tDCS (853.1 ± 288.6 s), simulated conventional (827.8 ± 278.7 s), sham (794.3 ± 271.2 s), or control conditions (TTE1 = 751.1 ± 261.6 s or TTE2 = 770.8 ± 250.6 s) [F(1.95; 21.4) = 1.537; P = 0.24; η2p = 0.123]. There was no effect on peripheral or whole-body RPE and associative thoughts (P > 0.05). No serious adverse effect was reported. A single session of neither HD-tDCS nor conventional tDCS changed exercise performance and psychophysiological responses in athletes, suggesting that a ceiling effect may exist.

Cyclopropanone derivatives constitute highly strained cycloalkanones with promising applications as three-carbon building blocks in organic synthesis. Due to the presence of a ketone in such a small ring system, all C–C bonds and the carbonyl group are considered to be labile in suitable conditions, leading to a wide variety of synthetic disconnections, including nucleophilic addition, ring expansion, ring-opening and (formal) cycloaddition. Despite their synthetic potential, the widespread adoption of cyclopropanones as substrates has been considerably hampered by the difficulties associated with the preparation and storage of such unstable compounds, prompting the development of cyclopropanone surrogates that can equilibrate to parent ketone in situ via elimination. This review summarizes the syntheses and applications of cyclopropanone derivatives and their equivalents, and offers a perspective of the state of the field as well as its expected future directions.

AbstractRecent technical advances have led to the discovery of novel functions of extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) in multiple cancer types. Studies have revealed that cancer-associated ecDNA shows a unique circular shape and contains oncogenes that are more frequently amplified than that in linear chromatin DNA. Importantly, the ecDNA-mediated amplification of oncogenes was frequently found in most cancers but rare in normal tissues. Multiple reports have shown that ecDNA has a profound impact on oncogene activation, genomic instability, drug sensitivity, tumor heterogeneity and tumor immunology, therefore may offer the potential for cancer diagnosis and therapeutics. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms and future applications of ecDNA remain to be determined. In this review, we summarize the basic concepts, biological functions and molecular mechanisms of ecDNA. We also provide novel insights into the fundamental role of ecDNA in cancer.

Abstract Background The frequency of new-onset HIV-associated seizure in the HIV-infected patient is estimated to be between 2 and 11%. Identifying the underlying etiology of new-onset seizure will have a vital impact on the mortality and morbidity of patients living with HIV infection. Case presentation We report a 34-year old newly diagnosed HIV+ male patient presented with abnormal body movement (ABM) involving his right hemibody associated with loss of consciousness lasting few minutes of two weeks duration. The ABM occurred frequently (> five times per week) and associated with frothy and excessive salivation. He reported headache following each spells. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral frontal T2 and FLAIR hyperintensity and T1 hypointensity; post contrast study showed bilateral small ring enhancing lesion with perilesional oedema, the biggest one on the left hemisphere, with a 10 mm diameter; considering patient advanced immunosuppression and underlying HIV infection, the brain MRI findings were consistent with cerebral toxoplasmosis. Bipolar montage electroencephalography (EEG) study showed generalized background slowing, prominent in the left fronto-centeral region. Patient was managed with combination antiretroviral therapy, anti-toxoplasmosis medication, and anticonvulsant. On follow up, the frequency of seizure attack has significantly reduced. Conclusion Considering the high prevalence of HIV infection and associated seizure among people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, this case fairly highlights on the importance of utilizing advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and EEG in identifying the underlying causes of HIV-associated seizures.
