Abstract In this paper, a fuzzy finite element algorithm is investigated to determine static responses of plane structures. This algorithm concerns finite element method, fuzzy sets theory, and response surface method. Firstly, the notion of a standardized triangular fuzzy number is developed and utilized to replace original fuzzy numbers in the surrogate models. Then, the error estimations between the training and the test sets are performed to select the suitable response surface model amongst the regression models. Lastly, a good performance combination of complete and non-complete quadratic polynomial regression models is proposed to define the responses of structures. The merits of the proposed algorithm are illustrated via numerical examples.

Abstract Soft robotic grippers can gently grasp and maneuver objects. However, they are difficult to model and control due to their highly deformable fingers and complex integration with robotic systems. This paper investigates the design requirements as well as the grasping capabilities and performance of a soft gripper system based on fluidic prestressed composite (FPC) fingers. An analytical model is constructed as follows: each finger is modeled using the chained composite model (CCM); strain energy and work done by pressure and loads are computed using polynomials with unknown coefficients; net energy is minimized using the Rayleigh-Ritz method to calculate the deflected equilibrium shapes of the finger as a function of pressure and loads; and coordinate transformation and gripper geometries are combined to analyze the grasping performance. The effects of prestrain, integration angle, and finger overlap on the grasping performance are examined through a parametric study. We also analyze gripping performance for cuboid and spherical objects and show how the grasping force can be controlled by varying fluidic pressure. The quasi-static responses of fabricated actuators are measured under pressures and loads. It is shown that the actuators' modeled responses agree with the experimental results.This work provides a framework for the theoretical analysis of soft robotic grippers and the methods presented can be ex-tended to model grippers with different types of actuation.

The cables of long-span cable-stayed bridges are subjected to substantial tension during long-term service and are more susceptible to corrosion and fatigue failure than concrete structures. Most existing structural health monitoring (SHM) systems do not have monitoring equipment to directly measure cable length, and long-term monitoring of the change in cables is less involved. The displacement response of a bridge is induced by the combination of dynamic effects (wind and highways) and quasi-static effects (temperature). In this paper, the dynamic responses were eliminated by averaging the displacement data for 10 min, and the relationship between temperature and displacement was studied. Based on the monitoring data, the distribution of the thermal field for the bridge was studied and the time variability of the tower displacement was investigated. The correlation was analyzed to study the relationship between the temperature and the tower displacements, the north tower–south tower distance and the tower–girder distances. A strong linear relationship between the temperature and quasi-static responses of the displacements was observed. The thermal expansion coefficient of the effective length of cables was proposed as a quantitative index for long-term cable monitoring. The error in the cable effective length is proposed as the warning index for performance warning research. The results show that the proposed performance warning method can monitor cables and perform warnings when the cable is damaged.

It is essential to design a reasonable mooring line length that ensures quasi-static responses of moored floating structures are within an acceptable level, and that reduces the cost of mooring lines in the overall project. Quasi-static responses include the equilibrium position and the line tension of a moored floating structure (also called the mean value in a dynamic response), etc. The quasi-static responses derived by the classic catenary equation cannot present mooring–seabed interaction and hydrodynamic effects on a mooring line. While a commercial program can predict reasonable quasi-static responses, costly modeling is required. This motivated us to propose a new method for predicting quasi-static responses that minimizes the mechanical energy of the whole system based on basic geometric parameters, and that is easy to implement. In this study, the mechanical energy of moored floating structures is assumed to be the sum of gravitational–buoyancy potential energy, kinetic energy induced by drag forces, and spring potential energy derived by line tension. We introduce fundamental theoretical background for the development of the proposed method. We investigate the effect of quasi-static actions on mooring response, comparing the proposed method’s results with those from the catenary equation and ABAQUS software. The study reveals the shortcomings of the catenary equation in offshore applications. We also compare quasi-static responses derived by the AQWA numerical package with the results calculated from the proposed method for an 8 MW WindFloat 2 type of platform. Good agreement was drawn between the proposed method and AQWA. The proposed method proves more timesaving than AQWA in terms of modeling of mooring lines and floaters, and more accurate than the catenary equation, and can be used effectively in the early design phase of dimension mooring lengths for moored floating structures.

Train vibration from closely aligned adjacent tunnels could cause safety concerns, especially given the soaring size of the tunnel diameter. This paper established a two-dimensional discrete element model (DEM) of small (d = 6.2 m) and super-large (D = 15.2 m) diameter cross-river twin tunnels and discussed the dynamic characteristics of adjacent tunnels during the vibration of a train that runs through the tunnel at a speed of 120 km/h. Results in the D tunnel showed that the horizontal walls have the same horizontal displacement (DH) and the vertical walls have the same vertical displacement (DV). The stress state of the surroundings of the D tunnel is the decisive factor for DH, and the distance from the vibration point to the measurement point is the decisive factor for DV. Results in the comparison of the d and D tunnels showed that the D tunnel is more stable than the d tunnel with respect to two aspects: the time the tunnel reaches the equilibrium state and the vibration amplitude of the structure’s dynamic and static responses. The dynamic characteristic of the d and D tunnel is significantly different. This research is expected to guide the design and construction of large diameter twin tunnels.

In this research, we investigate the structural behavior, including the snap-through and pull-in instabilities, of in-plane microelectromechanical COSINE-shaped and electrically actuated clamped-clamped micro-beams resonators. The work examines various electrostatic actuation patterns including uniform and non-uniform parallel-plates airgap arrangements, which offer options to actuate the arches in the opposite and same direction of their curvature. The nonlinear equation of motion of a shallow arch is discretized into a reduced-order model based on the Galerkin’s expansion method, which is then numerically solved. Static responses are examined for various DC electrostatic loads starting from small values to large values near pull-in and snap-through instability ranges, if any. The eigenvalue problem of the micro-beam is solved revealing the variations of the first four natural frequencies as varying the DC load. Various simulations are carried out for several case studies of shallow arches of various geometrical parameters and airgap arrangements, which demonstrate rich and diverse static and dynamic behaviors. Results show few cases with multi-states and hysteresis behaviors where some with only the pull-in instability and others with both snap-through buckling and pull-in instabilities. It is found that the micro-arches behaviors are very sensitive to the electrode’s configuration. The studied configurations reveal different possibilities to control the pull-in and snap-through instabilities, which can be used for improving arches static stroke range as actuators and for realizing wide-range tunable micro-resonators.

Wind tunnel tests were carried out to measure the wind pressure of a 200 m high natural-draught cooling tower. An analysis of the distribution characteristics of external pressure was then conducted to determine the pressure coefficients Cp(θ, z) in a given wind profile. Finally, the effect on the response of the shell and the buckling safety of the shell, applying the simplified height-constant pressure coefficient Cp(θ) and the realistic pressure Cp(θ, z), was determined. Taking the wind load specified in the code as an example, the influence of the distribution of external pressure on the wind-induced response was further analyzed. The results indicate that the pressure distribution varies with not only the height z but also the circumferential angle θ, and the wind load of both ends of the tower is significantly greater than that of its middle. Moreover, the wind-induced static responses of the tower under the action of the realistic pressure distribution Cp(θ, z) and the simplified approach Cp(θ) are basically consistent, because the wind load distribution is more important than its magnitude for the wind-induced response of cooling tower, and the wind-induced response of the cooling tower is dominated by the local shell deformation.

AbstractThe geometrical nonlinear effects caused by large displacements and rotations over the cross section of composite thin-walled structures are investigated in this work. The geometrical nonlinear equations are solved within the finite element method framework, adopting the Newton–Raphson scheme and an arc-length method. Inherently, to investigate cross-sectional nonlinear kinematics, low- to higher-order theories are employed by using the Carrera unified formulation, which provides a tool to generate refined theories of structures in a systematic manner. In particular, beams and shell-like laminated composite structures are analyzed using a layerwise approach, according to which each layer has its own independent kinematics. Different stacking sequences are analyzed, to highlight the influence of the cross-ply angle on the static responses. The results show that the geometrical nonlinear effects play a crucial role, mainly when higher-order theories are utilized.

Abstract This paper presents an efficient three-dimensional (3D) structural model for bump-type gas foil bearings (GFBs) developed by considering friction. The foil structures are modeled with a 3D shell finite element model. Using the bump foil mechanical characteristics, the Guyan reduction and component mode synthesis methods are adopted to improve computational efficiency while guaranteeing accurate static responses. A contact model that includes friction and separation behaviors is presented to model the interactions of the bump foil with the top foil and bearing sleeve. The proposed structural model was validated with published analytical and experimental results. The coupled elastohydrodynamics model of GFBs was established by integration of the proposed structural model with data on hydrodynamic films, and it was validated by comparisons with existing experimental results. The performance of a bearing with an angular misalignment was studied numerically, revealing that the reaction torques of the misaligned bearing predicted by GFB models with 2D and 3D foil structure models are quite different. The 3D foil structure model should be used to study GFB misalignment.
