The article, based on a systematic approach, highlights the author's thematic groups of English-language terminological units of the specialized  language of higher education in the United States. An attempt has been made to comprehend on the scholarly basis the correlation between the concepts of “thematic group” and “lexical-semantic group”. It is noted that the thematic classification of lexical units, which is the most common way of combining words, is bgrounded on the internal connections of objects and phenomena of reality, and is determined by the subject-logical features and common functional purpose of these units. Thematic groups of one or another branch terminological system can contain several nuclear lexical-semantic groups, and their units are characterized by a clear differentiation of features. It is emphasized that in interpreting the concept of thematic group, modern linguistics aims to determine the ways and features of semantic development (extralinguistic aspects) not of individual words, but of groups of lexems that have one semantic orientation. A thematic group is a group of words that includes words selected and combined on the basis of common subject-logical connections, and these words are the same parts of speech; or words from other parts of speech, needed to reveal a common theme. In the process of systematic study of English terminology of the U. S. higher education at the conceptual level, the terms are distributed by the author in a certain order – built subject-matter classification, which results in combining terms into thematic groups. Thematic classification involves a clear, logically sound organization of terminological vocabulary. The classification of the terminology of American higher education is based on determining its content, establishing the scope of semantics of each term, its concept that is combined with other terminological units in a single terminology system of the U. S. higher education.

The article discusses the necessity to apply specific methodological principles in FLT for professional purposes due to the increasing interest of learners towards such training. The focus is on the essence of the concept of specialized economic language and on the method of Task-Based Approach. The necessary strategies for its application are also mentioned. The development of the skill for active linguistic performance is promoted mainly by the implementation of minimally structured training situations (authenticity). The constructivist principle of creating polymodular conditions, including the personal experience of the learner so as to stimulate the solution of the given problem are mentioned. For this purpose the specialized content and its peculiarities together with its exact location in the vertical stratification of specialized language are emphasized. The process of working with specialized text and one of the descriptors of CEFR are discussed. When working, the principles of subject-specific aspects are taken into consideration, placing the importance on the quality of teaching materials instead of their quantity, and prioritizing the sistematicity and the orientation of the content over the form.

Specialized language from the spheres of pedagogy and psychology constitutes a fundamental aspect within the teacher – student communication. The submitted paper handles lexical and morphological features of compound nouns containing the nouns amnesia, memory and recall. The primary research interest focuses on collocations and concordances in which they appear on a regular basis; we also deal with the grammatical relations and elements of meaning that have an impact on the discourse characteristics. The studied lexical units are elaborated within English Web 2015 utilizing Sketch Engine. In the research, both quantitative (statistical methods) and qualitative (observation, comparison, generalization, data-driven research data modelling) methods were employed. To begin with, we provide the frequency list of the studied words within the text corpus, and we categorize them from the morphological perspective as the two aspects influence their lexical behaviour and employment for teaching purposes. The research outcomes indicate that the analysed lexical units exist in a broad discourse scope; moreover, they appreciably grant profitable acts of communication in the pedagogical settings. Eventually, we outline feasible pedagogical inferences of the inquiry outcomes in the teaching of English and we suggest a set of corpus-driven exercises on the professionally-oriented language from the fields of pedagogy and psychology. To sum up, the outcomes confirm that the lexical and semantic characteristics of specialized language underline social aspects of communication between experts (and public too). Further, we intend to elaborate words belonging to other spheres of professional communication (medicine, sociology, etc.) in the framework of the corpus examination.

The paper highlights the main motivation aspects of military highly specialized language training of future intelligence officers of Ukrainian Armed Forces. The motivation resources for forming the professional foreign language competence of military students of higher military educational establishments are determined. The effective conditions for studying professional terminology as the basis for the skills of a future expert are specified. The necessity of organizing an effective training process of studying professional terms is substantiated with the aim of creating the most effective conditions for learning professional terms for terminology, the latter being the basis of professional communication. The algorithm for introducing highly specialized terminology is outlined in order to better comprehend and reveal the essence of the concept and structure of the terms. The emphasis is laid on the technique of introducing highly specialized terminology. Thus the process of foreign language classes organization makes it possible to master professional texts in the original. The authors maintain that main methods of rendering contemporary English military vocabulary (single- and multi-component terminology, abbreviations and shortenings, set terminological units, neologisms) into Ukrainian are as follows: lexical equivalent translation, transformation translation borrowing (transcription / transliteration), descriptive translation, loan translation and others. The difficulties in rendering military vocabulary of the NATO publications are related to the pragmatic aspects of translation.

The conducting of an experiment on the role of the binary interactive lesson with the participation of a research associate from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has an extremely important part in the learning process. The lesson is about getting to know the role of the natural products in our health. The main objectives of this interactive binary lesson are: expanding and improving of the grammatical knowledge and development of specialized language skills in Bulgarian of our medical students by including them in innovative formats to increase their communicative competence; introduction of pseudo-communicative tasks with particular speech actions, repetition of phrases and creation of own short dialogues, communicative exercises for building complete and bigger dialogues and narrative texts; utilizing teamwork for creating situational compositions, transformations and psychological testing for measuring the parameters of readiness for working in a team, mutual respect, trust, mutual assistance, responsibility in a multicultural environment. In this manuscript we offer the specifics of an interactive lesson about the role of natural products and health realized with foreign students. We specify the opportunities for language acquisition orally and in writing in accordance with the indicated levels of competence of the European Language Framework. We take into account the possibilities for the application of interactive in parallel with the traditional methods and tools of work, so as to achieve the development of creative thinking in a foreign language for students, as well as the improvement of communicative skills for professional realization.

Abstract This work-in-progress paper presents a specialized language corpus UcebKo built from textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The corpus integrates three subcorpora (UcebKo-A2, UcebKo-B1, and UcebKo-B2) which allow research of Czech as a second/foreign language at chosen language levels (A2, B1, and B2). In this case, the research is focused on word-formation, where the first results, i.e., mapping of derived words denoting persons, illustrate the approach and methodology used.

The paper outlines the linguistic and semiotic aspects of a specialty text – a knitting pattern. In today’s busy world, nobody wants to read long and complicated texts if it can be easier illustrated by a photograph or a charted image that uses a set of specific symbols with their own, non-arbitrary meanings to make a text reader’s time usage more effective but also clear. Aspects of signs, semiotics, and language games are also explored in alignment with knitting charts as the main reference, as a knitting chart symbol is a concrete referent in its context. Finally, the translation of knitting charts is described, including the importance of a chart key and what transformations of text have occurred in the translation of knitting charts from English into Latvian. Charted knitting patterns could become a  that could be easily transferred between different languages and cultures, helping people share their skills and heritage. Knitting and linguistics and translation studies is a new area of research that could bring many new insights about crafting and specialized language use.

The popularity of teaching Latvian as a mother tongue has always been of great importance. Although various teaching materials have been developed over time, corpus-based learning materials are becoming more and more popular nowadays. Since December 2018, the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Latvia has carried out the Latvian State Research Programme “Latvian Language”, agreement No. VPP-IZM-2018/2-0002 (subproject “Acquisi-tion of Latvian Language”). During the project, “The Corpus of Students’ Essays” will be created. With the help of the Corpus, it will be possible to create new teaching materials and also carry out different Latvian grammar studies, etc. Based on the Corpus, it will also be possible to analyse different aspects of Latvian language acquisition of students from different Latvian schools, find out what is most difficult for students, and later work with various Latvian language acquisition issues. “Corpus of Student’s Essays” is a specialized language corpus that contains texts limited to one or more subject areas, domains, topics, etc. The corpus includes 468 essays from a class 12 Latvian language exam (approximately 185 000 running words). These are works by students of Latvian-language secondary schools, minority schools, and state gymnasiums from Kurzeme, Latgale, and Riga. “Corpus of Student’s Essays” contains uncorrected texts, retaining all typing, punctuation, etc. mistakes made by students. The corpus is automatically morphologically tagged. “Corpus of Student’s Essays”, like other language corpora, is developed in several stages. The beginning of the creation of any corpus is related to the definition of text selection criteria, then the selection of texts for the corpus, digitization, if necessary, editing, morphological annotation, creation and addition of a metadata set, etc. Since the corpus is not just texts, there is also an infrastructure for the collecting and processing of corpus data, as well as an interface for the use of the corpus. This article will deal with the structure and development stages of the “Corpus of Student’s Essays”, as well as the problems and solutions associated with it.

Abstract Teaching English for Tourism at university involves both developing specialized language skills and forming knowledgeable professionals capable of appropriate intercultural communication. The distinctive feature of most instances of tourism discourse is the fact that it draws from a range of specialized domains. It mediates the tourist experience and contributes to closing the gap between the home- and the destination’s culture by making culture-specific knowledge and specialized concepts accessible to non-specialists. The article discusses the instructional effects of authentic multimodal materials within task-based project-work carried out with learners at the University of Pisa. The focus is specifically on the communicative strategies used to make specialized terminology or concepts easily understandable for the hearer. This study reports on a multimodal analysis of two sets of videoclips created by the students before and after dedicated instruction based on authentic English L1 clips from documentaries, “docu-tours” and guided tours. It discusses the positive changes observed in the learners’ use of popularization strategies to create conceptual accessibility.
