Frozen yogurt is a frozen dairy dessert made with yogurt. It’s known for its frozen texture as a dessert and higher nutritional value in comparison with ice cream. Frozen yogurt is used much like ice cream and served in a wide variety of flavors and styles around the world. The objective of this project was to develop a healthier frozen yoghurt with natural banana flavour, and to evaluate its sensory acceptability. Banana frozen yoghurt was produced with vanilla and chocolate flavors. The sensory acceptability of products was tested at Department of Veterinary Public health and Pharmacology (VPHP) by conducting two sensory panels. According to the results, in sensory analysis both vanilla and chocolate flavored products were equally accepted. Further studies need to be carried out to improve the product with a higher probiotic value and better texture.

Food and nutritional quality of society is one of mine focuses of the government. Milk have complete nutrients but also can be the source food borne disease. The Veterinary Public Health itself has the responsibility to provide guarantees of food safety from animal resources which is called ASUH (safe, healthy, wholesome and halal) to be consumed by society. This study aimed to know the Total Plate Count of commercial pasteurized milk sold by street vendors in Mulyorejo Sub-district Surabaya. The study was conducted from January until February 2018 at the Laboratory of Veterinary Public Health Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. Thirty samples of commercial pasteurized milk were bought from three street vendors then examined using Pour Plate Method of Total Plate Count. Total Plate Count result showed that the number of bacteria in commercial pasteurized milk sold by street vendors in Mulyorejo Sub-district Surabaya was 1.0 x 104 CFU/ml, that met the National Standard of Indonesia (SNI) 01-3951-1995.

Current and emerging veterinary public health (VPH) challenges raised by globalization, climate change, and industrialization of food production require the veterinarian’s role to evolve in parallel and veterinary education to adapt to reflect these changes. The European Food Hygiene catalog was developed to provide a list of topics relevant to Day One Competencies in VPH. A study was undertaken to ensure that the catalog and teaching practices were pertinent to the work of public health veterinarians. Relevant stakeholders were consulted using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. A long questionnaire was distributed to 49 academics teaching VPH in European veterinary schools to review topics listed in the catalog. Eighteen responses were received (36.7%), representing 12 European countries. There was general agreement that most topics were appropriate for the undergraduate VPH curriculum. A short questionnaire was distributed to 348 European veterinarians working in the industry. Twenty-four questionnaires (6.7%) were received, representing eight European countries. Despite the low participation rate, topics needing greater emphasis in the undergraduate curriculum included Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), food microbiology, and audits. Seven semi-structured interviews with public health veterinarians working in the UK identified the need for curricular changes including greater practical experience and a shift from a focus on meat inspection to risk management. This may be partly achieved by replacing traditional lectures with authentic case-based scenarios. The study findings can be used to inform the future direction to VPH education for veterinary students across Europe.

Brucellosis is a Brucella bacterial infectious disease that is spread from animals to humans, generally through consumption of milk, especially unpasteurized milk, or other dairy products. Veterinary public health has an important role in preventing transmission of disease to humans through both animals and foodstuffs of animal origin or other animal origin ingredients. Brucellosis is one of the problems often faced by the Animal Husbandry Department, especially at the Animal Health Unit. Handling and controlling about Brucellosis is very vital to maintain animal health and reduce the level of economic losses of farmers due to Brucellosis experienced by livestock owned. This study aims to determine the spread of Brucellosis disease by mapping in the Administrative and Service Coordination areas, to know the handling and control actions carried out by the Animal Husbandry Service throughout the implementation of the Administrative Coordination Office and Veterinary Public Health. The results of the mapping of the spread of Brucellosis in the District of Veterinary Public Health and Public Service Administration Coordination can be divided into 3 groups with the number of cases <10, 10 - 66, and> 66. The number of cases between the range of 10 - 66 there are 3 regions, while the number of cases> 66 there are 2 regions.            Keywords : Brucellosis; Mapping; Handling and Control; Descriptive Statistics

Veterinary public health, a discipline in transition. Veterinary public health, a discipline in which veterinarians help control zoonotic animal diseases, has clearly contributed in improving human health. Since the early 19th century, traditional meat inspections have ensured that in many European countries, including Belgium, almost all animals slaughtered are declared fit for human consumption. Nevertheless, in recent decades, all industrialized countries have been confronted with an increasing number of foodborne infections caused by zoonotic bacteria. Until the end of the 20th century, the focus was mainly on detecting macroscopically visible abnormalities on animal carcasses and in food of animal origin. However, in farm animals, these microorganisms do not cause disease or macroscopic injuries, nor lead to reduced production parameters. The traditional veterinary inspection is therefore no longer sufficient to guarantee public health, and will, under the impulse of the European Commission, be transformed into a risk-based inspection in the near future. Furthermore, due to worldwide trading, movement of people, changed production processes and environmental degradation, a multidisciplinary approach with a renewed collaboration between animal and human medicine will, as in the past, be necessary to face these new challenges.

Novel SARS-CoV-2 variants with potential impacts on diagnostics, antivirals, and vaccines are spreading in Italy. In this editorial, we highlight the role that veterinary public health institutes may have in this global crisis, as their expertise in genomic/antigenic surveillance and animal studies are crucial to tackle SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
