This article presents the reception of structuralism in linguistics, psychology, social sciences, anthropology, and literature as viewed from the perspective of the most important philosophical journals in Romanian communism, Cercetări filozofice [Philosophical Research] and Revista de filozofie [The Philosophy Magazine] during the period between 1953 and 1967. Following François Dosse’s delineation between two phases of the development of structuralism (before and after 1967), Baghiu argues that in Romania – and possibly in Eastern Europe – structuralism was only taken serious as a methodology after the debate on Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault during 1967. Before that, every structuralist figure was criticized as bourgeois and idealistic. While Barthes becomes one of the most important references of French structuralism, Foucault becomes a sort of a public enemy in 1967, after his Les mots et les choses, which is viewed in socialist countries as anti-humanistic thought and thus rejected. This allows Baghiu to describe 1967 as a benchmark in which both structuralism and poststructuralism gain preeminence in philosophical debates in Romania, yet in different manners.

AbstractBetween 1988 and 1991, the rap album took flight. Under the dual impetus of innovations in sampling, and of the album form itself, an explosion of youthful creativity ensured the rap album, mined for more self-consciously artistic potential, emerged as a multi-layered artform that revealed a similarly multi-layered Black genius. For innovators like the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Son of Bazerk), Prince Paul (De La Soul) and others, the rap album was now often “more” than just a rap album. It could at once take on the characteristics of a radio show, a simulated game show, a talking comic book, a picaresque novel, an Afrofuturist vaudeville, or a visit to the movies—and, through any of these, invoke a multitude of stories and critiques from marginalized young Black perspectives.Drawing on a variety of ideas from Black American cultural studies, particularly those focused on creative transformation as a form of transcendence, this article analyzes the multi-layered creativity of one of this period's most unsung, yet ultimately important albums: KMD's showpiece of sampling transformation and satiric narrative wit, Mr. Hood. Best known as the album that initiated the career of the MC/producer later known as MF DOOM (arguably the most revered figure in underground rap post-1999), it also initiated his surreal approach to sampling non-musical material from sources in popular culture and envisagement of rap as a kind of modern-day folklore. Attempting to find a new way of working across the layers of the rap album—the magical interplay of mood, beat, references, verbal samples, storytelling, etc.—the article argues that such sample-based flights of the imagination represent a continuation of the Afro-magical tradition Theophus Smith calls Conjuring Culture.

Covid-19 has shed light on the Sino-Italian communities, usually perceived as a "minority model", based on their being considered as integrated, hard-working and silent. The media narratives about the relation between the spreading of the virus and the consumption of food framed as "disgusting" have neutralised the color-blindness usually applied to Asian migrants in Italy. The latent racism has been reinforced by a process of distinction focused on the disgust for an "abject" food. The reframing of the Sino-Italians as folk devils through the spread of gastro-panic has yet triggered processes of subjectivation, pushing them to make their voices heard on a public level. By the standpoint of 12 "Asian" restaurant owners in the city of Genoa, we explore the frame in which such dynamics have unfolded.

The article examines the innocent victims who were selfless representatives of the Karakalpak people, such as Ubaydulla Baoetdinov (Khan Maksim), Kutlymuratbiy (Bala biy), Inayat bolis Niyazov, Ollo'r Dustnazarov, Kasym Auebaev, Kasim Aoezov in the Bolshevik government during policy of repression. It is estimated that 70% of the representatives of the Karakalpak Autonomous Region were arrested under the name "public enemy", as a result of which the population became afraid and the policy of totalitarianism was intensified.

As one of the most serious frauds in many public sector institutions, corruption has been viewed as the 'public enemy’ for the last two decades in Indonesia. Many anti-fraud programs have been attempted to counter these corrupt activities. However, to what extent the programs are successful to bring the Indonesian public sectors to become ‘a clean institution’, has not been known yet. Therefore, by applying the OECD Integrity Management System as a framework and semi-structured interviews, this study provides an empirical studyat a strategic public institution. This study also attempts to analyse some factors that have become challenges in many anti-fraud programs for public sector in many developing countries like Indonesia.

PurposeThis paper investigates the relationship between corruption and corporate risk-taking in emerging markets where corruption is considered as “public enemy number one.”Design/methodology/approachThe study measures corruption based on Corruption Control Index annually published by World Bank and examines how corruption affects corporate risk-taking in emerging markets covered in MSCI Emerging Market Index.FindingsWith a sample of 75,338 observations from 8,326 firms across 20 emerging stock markets during the period 2005–2016, the author finds that corruption negatively affects corporate risk-taking. Robustness checks with a reduced sample without China and India, alternatives of corruption measures, various measures of risk-taking and Generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator also show consistent results. Moreover, additional analysis shows that information disclosure mitigates the effect of corruption on risk-taking.Originality/valueThe extant literature implies that corruption may decrease corporate risk-taking behavior through two channels including operational cost and debt financing cost.

COVID-19 is the worst pandemic of this millennium, and it is considered to be the “public enemy number one.” This catastrophe has changed the way we live in the blink of an eye. Not only has it threatened our existence and health status, but the damage associated with it could equally affect our economic, social, and educational systems. The focus of this study was on the anxiety level of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted between March and June 2020. A questionnaire was administered online, and 400 completed questionnaires were returned. In this study, the Zung self-rating anxiety scale was used to determine the anxiety levels among the respondents. The results indicated that about 35% of the students experienced moderate to extreme levels of anxiety. Anxiety was highly associated with age, sex, and level of education. These findings can enlighten government agencies and policy makers on the importance of making prompt, effective decisions to address students' anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers are encouraged to focus their future studies on how to develop strategies to boost students' resilience and enhance their adaptability skills for similar disasters in the future.

This article is based on a shared ethnographic experience centered on a trip back to a crucial landing site in Sicily. Searching for the evocative and emotional dimension of a border zone, the research follows a refugee, who is now living within the institutional reception system in Northern Italy, wandering and rediscovering the moment of his arrival three years after having been rescued. The dialogue that emerged from this experience focuses on the following aspects: the relationship between death at sea and the willingness to remember and give testimony, the security turn in the management of programmed landings, the production of the sea smuggler as a comfortable public enemy and scapegoat, and the camp as a device of segregation rather than hospitality. Through these four aspects, the article explores the critical possibilities of a refugee gaze, trying to explore the border from a different perspective from that of the state’s thought on migration.

This article analyzes the theoretical and practical aspects of the creation the author`s image in the novel "Ai and Aisha" of the national writer of Kazakhstan, the holder of the State Prize - Sherkhan Murtaza, the heroism of the main character Baryskhan in the difficult times of the 1930 years of the 20th century was revealed through the hard destiny of the family, which called "Public Enemy". The character of the hero, his dreams and his actions are defined within social and public contradictions. Baryskhan is the descendant of noble family, who his father Murtaza was arrested at the 1937 year on fraudulent charges of "Public Enemy", and Baryskhan worked in the collective farm trying to take care of his younger brothers and mother, who was left without support. Baryskhan had been struggling for a long time to people, such as Tasbet,who is threatening his family and threatens violence at all times and Baryskhan became an outstanding figure. The image of Baryskhan becomes clear through these sinister events and becomes a realistic image.
