Aim: This study was designed to prepare and evaluate cefixime-loaded nanoparticles containing low molecular weight chitosan films for the enhanced topical treatment of periodontitis. Methods: To fabricate the enhanced antimicrobial films, a nanoprecipitation method for cefixime nanoparticles followed by a solvent evaporation method for these nanoparticles loaded films were adopted in this study. Nine batches of nanoparticles (NPs) with different concentrations of ethyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol were prepared and evaluated. Furthermore, nine batches of optimized NPs loaded films with different concentrations of low molecular weight chitosan and glycerol were fabricated and evaluated. Optimized NPs loaded films were assessed for their antimicrobial activity against the periodontitis patient’s saliva samples. Results: The FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD study revealed that there was no interaction between the drug and all other excipients and the drug remained amorphous form in chitosan film. The SEM study revealed that the prepared NPs were spherical in shape and uniformly distributed in chitosan film. In vitro drug release study revealed the NPs have a sustained release profile up to 8 days and NPs loaded films have up to 11 days. The conventional marketed mouth wash shows a low inhibition zone of 5.70 ± 0.043 mm, whereas NPs loaded film shows a higher inhibition zone of 6.72 ± 0.063 mm against periodontal microorganisms present in the patient’s saliva. The stability study revealed that the optimized NPs loaded film shows no dramatic change in drug release profile and folding endurance after six months. Conclusion: This present study highlights the possible usage of cefixime NPs loaded films in enhanced periodontal treatment.

Chitosan is widely used as a natural preservative of fruits and vegetables, but its poor mechanical and water resistances have limited its application. Therefore, in this study, we prepared chitosan composite films by incorporating different amounts of nano-zinc oxide (nano-ZnO) to improve the mechanical properties of chitosan. We also assessed the antibacterial activity of these films against selected microorganisms. The addition of nano-ZnO improved the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) of the chitosan films and reduced their light transmittance. TS and EAB increased from 44.64 ± 1.49 MPa and 5.09 ± 0.38% for pure chitosan film to 46.79 ± 1.65 MPa and 12.26 ± 0.41% for a 0.6% nano-ZnO composite film, respectively. The ultraviolet light transmittance of composite films containing 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% nano-ZnO at 600 nm decreased from 88.2% to 86.0%, 82.7%, and 81.8%, respectively. A disc diffusion test showed that the composite film containing 0.6% nano-ZnO had the strongest antibacterial activity against Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella. In a 15-day preservation study, chitosan composite films containing 0.6% nano-ZnO maintained the soluble solid content of cherry tomatoes, effectively inhibited their respiration, and exhibited good antibacterial properties against the selected microorganisms. Overall, the prepared chitosan nano-ZnO composite film showed a good preservation effect on cherry tomatoes.

The influence of the structural features of carrageenan on the functional properties of the films was studied. The carrageenans and chitosan films, as well as three-layer films containing a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of the two, were prepared. The X-ray diffractograms of carrageenan films reflected its amorphous structure, whereas chitosan and three-layer films were characterized by strong reflection in the regions of 20° and 15° angles, respectively. The SEM of the cross-sectional morphology showed dense packing of the chitosan film, as well as the layer-by-layer structure of different densities for the PEC. Among the tested samples, κ/β-carrageenan and chitosan films showed the highest tensile strength and maximum elongation. Films containing the drug substance echinochrome were obtained. Mucoadhesive properties were assessed as the ability of the films to swell on the mucous tissue and their erosion after contact with the mucosa. All studied films exhibited mucoadhesive properties. All studied films exhibited mucoadhesive properties which depended on the carrageenans structure. Multilayer films are stronger than single-layer carrageenan films due to PEC formation. The resulting puncture strength of the obtained films was comparable to that of commercial samples described in the literature.

Edible coating can improve fruits shelf life and, consequently, reduce their waste. Chitosan, which presents a potential for chemical modifications and capacity to form films, can be an alternative for coating due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial properties. Chitosan film can be obtained through casting method presenting suitable mechanical properties, such as resistance to traction and elongation, ability to adhere to surfaces and selective permeability to gases, such as O2 and CO2. However, it is highly permeable to water vapor, which can limit its potential coating use. The properties of chitosan films can be improved through the formation of composites by inserting nanoclays as montmorillonite in the polymeric matrix. The objective of this study was to develop and characterize chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposites for fruit coating aiming for future applications in the field of smart packaging. Nanocomposites were characterized by its microstructure, thermal, mechanical, and physicochemical properties. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated changes in crystallinity with the insertion of montmorillonite. Nanocomposites became more transparent and significantly reduced its water permeability rate with 0.5% w/w montmorillonite addition. Elastic rigidity and tensile strength of the films were improved. Chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposites demonstrated the potential to improve the storage time of Williams pears.

The role of the oral microbiome and its effect on dental diseases is gaining interest. Therefore, it has been sought to decrease the bacterial load to fight oral cavity diseases. In this study, composite materials based on chitosan, chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, chitosan with zinc oxide particles, and chitosan with copper nanoparticles were prepared in the form of thin films, to evaluate a new alternative with a more significant impact on the oral cavity bacteria. The chemical structures and physical properties of the films were characterized using by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR,) Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. Subsequently, the antimicrobial activity of each material was evaluated by agar diffusion tests. No differences were found in the hydrophilicity of the films with the incorporation of ZnO or copper particles. Antimicrobial activity was found against S. aureus in the chitosan film crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, but not in the other compositions. In contrast antimicrobial activity against S. typhimurium was found in all films. Based on the data of present investigation, chitosan composite films could be an option for the control of microorganisms with potential applications in various fields, such as medical and food industry.
