Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the histological characteristics in the digestive and renal systems of lambs fed diets containing coconut by-product (CB). A total of 35 male lambs with an initial weight of 16.9 ± 2.93 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design with five levels of CB in the diet (0; 4.8; 9.6; 14.4 and 19.2% in total dry matter). Samples of the liver, kidney, rumen, and intestine were histomorphometrically evaluated and the data were submitted to regression analysis, at a 5% error probability. The inclusion of CB linearly decreased the dry matter intake and caused a quadratic effect for the height of ruminal papillae, absorption area, epithelium thickness, as well as for average daily gain. The inclusion of CB linearly increased the mucous layer and reduced the submucosal layer, as well as promoted a decrease in goblet cells in the small intestine. The inclusion of BC did not influence hepatic glycogen, additionally, the histopathological examination did not reveal liver damage or congestion, vacuolization, and necrosis of the renal tissue. Therefore, our results indicate that CB can be included in lambs diet up to the level of 7.2% without causing changes in the histomorphometry characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract and changes in liver and kidney tissue that compromise animal performance.

Although nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) co-application improves crop growth, yield, and N use efficiency (NUE) of rice, few studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying these interactions. To investigate root morphological and physiological characteristics and determine yield and nitrogen use parameters, rhizo-box experiments were performed on rice using six treatments (no fertilizer, PK, N, NK, NP, and NPK) and plants were harvested at maturity. The aboveground biomass at the elongating stage and grain yield at maturity for NPK treatment were higher than the sum of PK and N treatments. N, P, and K interactions enhanced grain yield due to an increase in agronomic N use efficiency (NAE). The co-application of N, P, and K improved N uptake and N recovery efficiency, exceeding the decreases in physiological and internal NUE and thereby improving NAE. Increases in root length and biomass, N uptake per unit root length/root biomass, root oxidation activity, total roots absorption area, and roots active absorption area at the elongating stage improved N uptake via N, P, and K interactions. The higher total N uptake from N, P, and K interactions was due to improved root characteristics, which enhanced the rice yield and NUE.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and monensin (MONS) interaction on the liver and intestinal histological changes in poultry, and the influence of Pichia kudriavzevii RC001. One-day-old commercial line (Ross 308) broilers (n=120) were individually weighed and randomly assigned to 8 treatments (15 broilers/treatment, 5 broilers per cage and 3 replicates/treatment). The experimental diets were: Group 1: basal diet (BD); Group 2: BD + MONS (50 mg/kg); Group 3: BD + P. kudriavzevii RC001 (1 g/kg); Group 4: BD + AFB1 (100 μg/kg); Group 5: BD + MONS + P. kudriavzevii RC001; Group 6: BD + AFB1 + P. kudriavzevii RC001; Group 7: BD + AFB1 + MONS + P. kudriavzevii RC001; Group 8: BD + AFB1 + MONS. When MONS was added, the typical AFB1 macroscopic and microscopic alterations were intensified. The P. kudriavzevii RC001 cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays with Vero cells and with broiler chicken’s erythrocytes, demonstrated that P. kudriavzevii RC001 neither were non-cytotoxic nor genotoxic. When MONS was added in the presence of P. kudriavzevii RC001, the toxic effect of AFB1 on liver was not prevented. When P. kudriavzevii was present alone, the same prevention of the pathological damage was observed in the intestine of poultry fed with AFB1. The smallest apparent absorption area was obtained when AFB1 and MONS were added in the feed (P<0.05). AFB1 and MONS interaction demonstrated important toxic effects. Although P. kudriavzevii was effective in ameliorating the adverse effects of AFB1 alone on liver pathology and gut morphology, it was not able to diminish the toxic effects of AFB1 in presence of MONS. It suggests that P. kudriavzevii could be used as feed additive or counteracting the toxic effects of AFB1 in poultry production in the absence of MONS.

Itraconazole (ITZ) is a class II drug according to the biopharmaceutical classification system. Its solubility is pH 3-dependent, and it is poorly water-soluble. Its pKa is 3.7, which makes it a weak base drug. The aim of this study was to prepare solid dispersion (SD) pellets to enhance the release of ITZ into the gastrointestinal environment using hot-melt extrusion (HME) technology and a pelletizer. The pellets were then filled into capsules and evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The ITZ changed from a crystalline state to an amorphous state during the HME process, as determined using DSC and PXRD. In addition, its release into the gastrointestinal tract was enhanced, as was the level of ITZ recrystallization, which was lower than the marketed drug (Sporanox®), as assessed using an in vitro method. In the in vivo study that was carried out in rats, the AUC0–48h of the commercial formulation, Sporanox®, was 1073.9 ± 314.7 ng·h·mL−1, and the bioavailability of the SD pellet (2969.7 ± 720.6 ng·h·mL−1) was three-fold higher than that of Sporanox® (*** p < 0.001). The results of the in vivo test in beagle dogs revealed that the AUC0–24h of the SD-1 pellet (which was designed to enhance drug release into gastric fluids) was 3.37 ± 3.28 μg·h·mL−1 and that of the SD-2 pellet (which was designed to enhance drug release in intestinal fluids) was 7.50 ± 4.50 μg·h·mL−1. The AUC of the SD-2 pellet was 2.2 times higher than that of the SD-1 pellet. Based on pharmacokinetic data, ITZ would exist in a supersaturated state in the area of drug absorption. These results indicated that the absorption area is critical for improving the bioavailability of ITZ. Consequently, the bioavailability of ITZ could be improved by inhibiting precipitation in the absorption area.

The Normalization Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), for many years, was widely used in remote sensing for the detection of vegetation land cover. This index uses red channel radiances (i.e., 0.66 μm reflectance) and near-IR channel (i.e., 0.86 μm reflectance). In the heavy chlorophyll absorption area, the red channel is located, while in the high reflectance plateau of vegetation canopies, the Near-IR channel is situated. Senses of channels (Red & Near- IR) read variance depths over vegetation canopies. In the present study, a further index for vegetation identification is proposed. The normalized difference vegetation shortwave index (NDVSI) is defined as the difference between the cubic bands of Near- IR and Shortwave infrared radiation (SWIR) divided by their sums. The radiances or reflectances are included in this index from the Near-IR channel and WSIR2 channel (2.1 μm). The NDVSI is less sensitivite to atmospheric effects as compared to NDVI. By comparing the one NDVSI index with the two indexes (NDVI, SAVI) of vegetation cover, good correlations were found between NDVI  and NDVSI (R2=0.917) and between SAVI and NDVSI (R2=0.809. Accordingly, the proposed index can be taken into consideration as an independent vegetation index

Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) play an important role in global climate change and air quality, and SOA tracers can directly characterize the source and reaction mechanism of SOA. However, it is not well known that whether the tracers can be oxidized or how the instability of the tracers in the atmosphere. In this paper, in-situ FTIR was used to analyze the chemical structure changes of erythritol, analogue of 2-methyl erythritol (AME) that is, a tracer of isoprene SOA, and 2, 3-dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic acid (DHOPA), a tracer of toluene SOA, when exposed to high concentration of ozone for short periods. Under the condition of 20 ppm ozone exposure for 30 min, the change rate of absorption area of AME at 3,480 and 1700 cm−1 was −0.0134 and 0.00117 int.abs/s, respectively, and the change rate of the absorption area of DHOPA at 1,640 and 3340cm−1 was −0.00191 and 0.00218 int.abs/s, respectively. The pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant kapp were 1.89 × 10−8 and 2.12 × 10−7 s−1, and the uptake coefficients of ozone on the surface of AME and DHOPA were (1.3 ± 0.8) × 10−8 and (4.5 ± 2.7) × 10−8, respectively. These results showed the oxidation processes of AME and DHOPA were slow in the presence of high concentrations of ozone, which implied that AME and DHOPA could be considered to be stable in the atmospheric environment with ozone as the main oxidant.

Forest cover influences not only the amount of surface runoff, but also its quality. The concentrations of chemicals in surface runoff differ between forest catchments and non-forest catchments (agricultural areas). The authors investigated the chemical compositions of surface runoff in two small neighboring catchments (forest, non-forest), by analyzing and summarizing data over a period of 26 years from 1986 to 2012. During this period, the stock and absorption area of forest stands increased, air quality improved, the agricultural landscape was partly regenerated, and global climate change became apparent. The authors observed differences in surface runoff between forest- and non-forest catchments. However, these differences were not mainly caused by the influence of the forest cover, but by changes in agricultural land management. Since 2006, agricultural land has been managed without the use of artificial fertilizers, which reduced the contents of pollutants in surface runoff from the non-forest catchment. The existence of the forest as such excludes or noticeably eliminates the use of fertilizers and chemical substances that affect water quality.

For the extraction of vanadylporphyrin complexes from oils of the oil-and-gas bearing region «North Buzachi» at 20 °C, N-N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) was used as an extractant, which shows a good isolating ability of porphyrin complexes into fractions with increasing the polarity. In the visible region the electronic spectra of metalporphyrin concentrates isolated from oil differ slightly and have two intense absorption bands at 573 nm and 534 nm, corresponding to vanadylporphyrin complexes, and at 550 nm, related to nickel porphyrins. According to the calculation method of graphical extrapolation, using the Lambert-Ber formula, content of nickel porphyrins in the extract is 11 times less than vanadylporphyrins. In the FT-IR spectra of porphyrinates, strong deformation vibrations of C-H-pyrrole fragments were detected in the absorption area 809.27 and 3024.79 cm-1, which indicate the presence of vanadium (IV) porphyrinate in the isolated fraction.

This study assessed the effect of the combination of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (SB) and phytase (PH) on the performance, intestinal integrity, and bone development of broilers. The experiment comprised 736 chicks distributed in a completely randomised design in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme (with and without the inclusion of SB and with the inclusion of PH at the recommended dose and superdosing) totalling four treatments and eight repetitions of 23 birds each. SB was added at 0.750 kg/tonne and PH was included at 750 phytase units (FTU)/kg and 1 500 FTU/kg of diet. The live weight (LW), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion (FC) were evaluated weekly. Bone measurements of the tibia and femur, densitometry, length, the Seedor index, and diameter were performed at seven and 28 days. In the same ages, fragments of the jejunum and ileum segments were collected and subjected to a morphometry analysis. At seven days of age, the birds supplemented with the phytase superdosing showed a better FI and LW, and the microencapsulated SB in the diet showed a better LW and FC. In the period from one to 28 days, the treatment supplemented with SB provided a higher FI and LW. The SB supplementation resulted in greater bone measurements at seven and 28 days. The use of the superdosing phytase increased the villus length and width of the jejunum at seven days and at 28 days. There was an increase in the villus length, villus-to-crypt ratio, absorption area, and muscular layer of the jejunum and a decrease in the crypt width of the jejunum. The SB supplementation increased the ileum crypt width at seven days and there was no effect on any intestinal segment at 28 days. The supplementation of SB or PH 1 500 FTU/kg in the broiler diets’ growth promoter or antibiotic-free resulted in a better performance and bone measurements, while the association of the additional PH 1 500 FTU/kg and SB supplementation resulted in the greater depth and width of the jejunum crypt and villus : ileum crypt at seven days and greater villus length and ileum absorption area at 28 days. The association of SB and PH may be a strategy to improve the performance and bone quality and intestinal integrity in broilers.

In the present study, the effect of increasing absorption area by using two different cross-section shapes of rising pipe namely semi-circle cross-section (model -A-) and elliptic cross-section (model -B-) on the temperature distribution of operating liquid within rising pipe of the FPSC is studied numerically and experimentally. Experimental tests are conducted under weather Baghdad – Iraq, while the numerical results are obtained by using Ansys Fluent CFD. The difference between the experimental findings and numerical findings for the average temperature of the water in the tank and the temperature of the operating liquid at exit rising pipe is 8.12 % and 8.36 % respectively. The results have shown that the temperature distribution for all new models higher than the traditional model. Furthermore, model -B- has higher other models under study. Hence, the best model according to the current study is model -B- increase by (2.4%), (2.2%) and (2.5%) regarding the temperature of the operating liquid at the inlet, center, and outlet respectively compared to the traditional model.
