This paper presents a nonlinear control design for the stabilization of parallel and circular motion in a school of robotic fish actuated with internal reaction wheels. The closed-loop swimming dynamics of the fish robots are represented by the canonical Chaplygin sleigh. They exchange relative state information according to a connected, undirected communication graph to form a system of coupled, nonlinear, second-order oscillators. Prior work on collective motion of constant-speed, self-propelled particles serves as the foundation of our approach. However, unlike a self-propelled particle, the fish robots follow limit-cycle dynamics to sustain periodic flapping for forward motion with time-varying speed. Parallel and circular motions are achieved in an average sense without feedback linearization of the agents’ dynamics. Implementation of the proposed parallel formation control law on an actual school of soft robotic fish is described, including system identification experiments to identify motor dynamics and the design of a motor torque-tracking controller to follow the formation torque control. Experimental results demonstrate a school of four robotic fish achieving parallel formations starting from random initial conditions.

All-vanadium flow batteries (VRFBs) are used in the field of energy storage due to their long service life and high safety. In order to further improve the charge-discharge performance of VRFB, this study mainly used the comparative evaluation of VRFB’s carbon fiber electrode compression ratio and electrolyte flow rate. The battery is charged and discharged under different current densities, different compression ratios, and different flow rates. The results show that increasing the compression ratio at different current densities can reduce the internal resistance of the battery, but an excessive compression ratio will accelerate the transfer of vanadium ions, increase the deviation of the electrolyte, and reduce the Coulombic efficiency of the battery. The performance of the battery tends to be balanced when the compression ratio is 30%. At the same time, in the case of the same compression ratio, increasing the flow rate of the electrolyte can reduce the internal reaction resistance of the battery. When the flow reaches a certain value, the influence on the internal resistance will be smaller.

As a critical component, the bipolar plate appreciably affects the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The flow field structure on the bipolar plate is significant in transporting the internal reaction gas and excess water. In the nature, the leaf veins provide efficient branch networks to the plant, contributing to distribute the nutrients in the whole system. By bionic means, a similar branching structure can be used to design flow channels on the bipolar plates for PEMFC, which helps distribute the reactant gas evenly and manage the water better. In this paper, a three-dimensional isothermal single phase model of the bio-inspired flow channel design based on the leaf vein pattern was presented. The effect of the angle between the main channel and sub-channels on the performance of PEMFC was studied at various cases. A PEMFC of 10.24cm2 activation area was assembled and examined experimentally. The results showed that increasing the angle appropriately was beneficial to improving the uniform oxygen distribution and excess water removal. After comprehensively analyzing the electrochemical performance, species distribution, and power loss of PEMFC, the optimal angle was presented.

Abstract Background Predatory attacks on horses can become a problem in some parts of the world, particularly when considering the recovering gray wolf populations. The issue studied was whether horses transformed by humans and placed in stable-pasture environments had retained their natural abilities to respond to predation risk. The objective of the study was to determine the changes in cardiac activity, cortisol concentrations, and behavior of horses in response to the vocalizations of two predators: the gray wolf (Canis lupus), which the horses of the breed studied had coevolved with but not been exposed to recently, and Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr), from which the horses had been mostly isolated. In addition, we hypothesized that a higher proportion of Thoroughbred (TB) horse ancestry in the pedigree would result in higher emotional excitability in response to predator vocalizations. Nineteen horses were divided into groups of 75%, 50% and 25% TB ancestry. The auditory test conducted in a paddock comprised a 10-min prestimulus period, a 5-min stimulus period when one of the predators was heard, and a 10-min poststimulus period without any experimental stimuli. Results The increase in heart rate and saliva cortisol concentration in response to predator vocalizations indicated some level of stress in the horses. The lowered beat-to-beat intervals revealed a decrease in parasympathetic nervous system activity. The behavioral responses were less distinct than the physiological changes. The responses were more pronounced with leopard vocalizations than wolf vocalizations. Conclusions The horses responded with weak signs of anxiety when exposed to predator vocalizations. A tendency towards a stronger internal reaction to predators in horses with a higher proportion of TB genes suggested that the response intensity was partly innate. The more pronounced response to leopard than wolf may indicate that horses are more frightened of a threatening sound from an unknown predator than one known by their ancestors. The differing response can be also due to differences in the characteristic of the predators’ vocalizations. Our findings suggested that the present-day horses’ abilities to coexist with predators are weak. Hence, humans should protect horses against predation, especially when introducing them into seminatural locations.

Purpose: The aim of this research was to make reference to the difference in heart rate values (HR) of soccer players in small-sided games (SSG) with different rule modifications. We assumed that the permitted number of ball touches in SSGs will significantly affect the internal load of participating soccer players’ organism. Methods: The experimental group consisted of older junior players (U19) from the FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda soccer club (n=6). The HR values were evaluated on the basis of collected data, which were obtained using sport testers and special software. In order to find out the statistical significance of the difference in HR the one-way ANOVAand the Bonferroni post hoc test was used. The level of statistical significance was set at 5%. Results: We found out that by the change of the SSG rules, the internal reaction of players´ organism to training load was at different level. In the SSG1, where players were permitted only one ball contact during the SSG, the highest achieved average HR value of the moni-tored players’ (160.08 9.27 beats.min-1) was recorded. This form of the SSGs was the most intense for the players’cardiovascular system. However, there were no significant differences in HR values among the different types of the SSGs. Conclusions: Our recommendation is to employ small forms of SSGs (3 vs. 3) with different rule modifications in the systematic training process, because by the means of it we can ad-equately prepare the players for the real competitive match demands.

AbstractThe introduction of tissue engineering has allowed scientists to push the boundaries and treat seriously damaged ocular surface epithelia. They have managed to do this through the development of biological substitutes that restore, maintain or improve tissue function. To ensure the generation of a therapeutically safe and effective graft, knowledge on the transcriptional profile of native and cultured ocular surface epithelia is of undeniable value. Gene expression studies are, however, only as reliable as their proper selection of internal reaction controls or reference genes. In this study, we determined the expression stability of a number of reference genes: 18s rRNA, ACTB, ATP5B, CyC1, EIF4A2, GAPDH, RPL13A, SDHA, TOP1, UBC, and YWHAZ in primary isolates as well as in ex vivo cultured ocular surface epithelia explants (day 0 and/or day 14). Expression stability of the reference genes was assessed with both the geNorm and NormFinder software that use a pairwise comparison and a model-based approach, respectively. Our results extend the general recommendation of using multiple reference genes for normalization purposes to our model systems and provide an overview of several references genes that are likely to be stable in similar culture protocols.

A Staphylococcus Multiplex PCR system was developed for the simultaneous detection of the mecA, mecC, blaZ (resistance genes of b-lactam resistance) and PVL (pathogenicity factor gene), associated with an internal reaction control with the 16S rRNA gene. There were used primers described in the literature with and without modification and designed primers to standardize the hybridization and amplification temperature of distinct bands with 139 bp (mecC), 228 bp (16S), 313 bp (mecA), 408 bp (PVL) and 516 bp (blaZ) of molecular weight. The standardization was performed in ATCC strains and Staphylococcus schleiferiand tested in 56 strains of Staphylococcusspp. The 16S gene (internal control) was amplified in all samples, mecA gene was detected in two samples, mecA associated with mecC gene in one sample, mecA associated to the blaZ gene in 14 samples and the blaZ gene in 15 samples. No resistance genes were amplified in 24 samples. The PVL gene was not amplified in any of the samples tested.

Summary The aim of this research was to make reference to the difference in heart rate values (HR) of soccer players in small-sided games (SSG) with various content focus. We assumed that the aim at the content in small-sided games would significantly affect the HR values of participating soccer players. The research group was comprised of players (n = 6) of the soccer club FK DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda (U15) at the age of 14 ± 0.7 years. The HR values were evaluated on the basis of collected data, which we obtained using sport testers and special software POLAR TEAM2. In order to find out the statistical significance of the difference in HR was used the One-Way ANOVA and the Bonferroni post hoc test. The level of statistical significance was set at 5 %. We found out that by the change of the small-sided game’s content focus, the internal reaction of players’ organism to training load was at different level. In the SSG3, with the emphasis on the improvement of individual’s final offensive game activity – shooting, was recorded the highest achieved HRavg value of the monitored players (181.83 ±7.11 beats.min−1). This form of the SSG was the most intense. However, there were no significant differences in HR values among the individual forms of the SSG. Our recommendation is to employ in the systematic training process small forms of small-sided games with various content focus, because by the means of it we can adequately prepare the players for the match load itself.
