The longitudinal pattern of root aerenchyma formation of its relationship with the function of adventitious roots in rice remains unclear. In this study, the percentage of the aerenchyma area to the cross-sectional area (i.e., aerenchyma percentage) was fit with four non-linear models, namely, W0-Gompertz, Ti-Gompertz, logistic, and von Bertalanffy. Goodness-of-fit criteria such as the R2, the Akaike information criterion (AIC), and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) were used to select the model. The bias of the parameters was evaluated using the difference between the ordinary least squares-based parameter estimates and the mean of 1,000 bootstrap-based parameter estimates and the symmetry of the distributions of these parameters. The results showed that the Ti-Gompertz model, which had a high goodness-of-fit with an R2 close to 1, lower AIC and BIC values, parameter estimates close to being unbiased, and good linear approximation, provided the best fit for the longitude pattern of rice aerenchyma formation with different root lengths among the competing models. Using the second- and third-order derivatives according to the distance from the root apex, the critical points of Ti-Gompertz were calculated. The rapid stage for aerenchyma formation was from the maximum acceleration point (1.38–1.76 cm from the root apex) to the maximum deceleration point (3.13–4.19 cm from the root apex). In this stage, the aerenchyma percentage increased by 5.3–15.7% per cm, suggesting that the cortical cells tended to die rapidly for the aerenchyma formation rather than for the respiration cost during this stage. Meanwhile, the volume of the aerenchyma of the entire roots could be computed using the integral function of the Ti-Gompertz model. We proposed that the longitudinal pattern of root aerenchyma formation modeled by the Ti-Gompertz model helped to deeply understand the relationship between the anatomical traits and physiological function in rice adventitious roots.

Background: The changes of the gut-brain axis have been recently recognized as important components in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis.Objectives: To evaluate the effects of DMF on intestinal barrier permeability and mucosal immune responses.Methods: We investigated intestinal permeability (IP) and circulating CD161+CCR6+CD8+T cells in 25 patients with MS, who met eligibility criteria for dimethyl-fumarate (DMF) treatment. These data, together with clinical/MRI parameters, were studied at three time-points: baseline (before therapy), after one (T1) and 9 months (T2) of treatment.Results: At baseline 16 patients (64%) showed altered IP, while 14 cases (56%) showed active MRI. During DMF therapy we found the expected decrease of disease activity at MRI compared to T0 (6/25 at T1, p = 0.035 and 3/25 at T2, p < 0.00), and a reduction in the percentage of CD161+CCR6+CD8+ T cells (16/23 at T2; p < 0.001). The effects of DMF on gut barrier alterations was variable, without a clear longitudinal pattern, while we found significant relationships between IP changes and drop of MRI activity (p = 0.04) and circulating CD161+CCr6+CD8+ T cells (p = 0.023).Conclusions: The gut barrier is frequently altered in MS, and the CD161+ CCR6+CD8+ T cell-subset shows dynamics which correlate with disease course and therapy.

For an engineering feasibility study, we studied a simple design to improve NCSS (nanocarbon composite strain sensor) sensitivity by using its geometric pattern at a macro scale. We fabricated bulk- and grid-type sensors with different filler content weights (wt.%) and different sensor lengths and investigated their sensitivity characteristics. We also proposed a unit gauge factor model of NCSS to find a correlation between sensor length and its sensitivity. NCSS sensitivity was improved proportional to its length incremental ratio and we were able to achieve better linear and consistent data from the grid type than the bulk type one. We conclude that the longer sensor length results in a larger change of resistance due to its piezoresistive unit summation and that sensor geometric pattern design is one of the important issues for axial load and deformation measurement.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to explore fine lexical tuning in Dutch infant-directed speech (IDS) addressed to congenitally deaf infants who received a cochlear implant (CI) early in life (<2 years of age) in comparison with children with normal hearing (NH). The longitudinal pattern of parents' utterance length in the initial stages of the child's lexical development was examined. Parents' utterances containing the words the children eventually acquired in the earliest developmental stages were selected and their MLU (Mean Length of Utterance) was measured.Method: Transcriptions of monthly recordings of spontaneous interactions of 10 CI children and 30 NH children with their parents were analyzed. The children with CI were followed from the moment their device was switched on, and the NH children from the age of 6 months onwards. A total of 57,846 utterances of parents of CI children and 149,468 utterances of parents of NH children were analyzed.Results: IDS addressed to children with NH and children with CI exhibits fine lexical tuning: parents adjust the MLU of the utterances that contain the words that children are on the verge of producing themselves. More specifically, the parents' mean length of those utterances decreased in relation to the point when the children began using the item. Consequently, the number of occurrences in isolation of the lexical item increased. The speech addressed to all the children exhibited this phenomenon, but it was significantly more strongly present in speech addressed to the children with CI.Conclusions: The speech addressed to children with NH and CI is characterized by fine lexical tuning and a high incidence of single-word utterances in the period leading up to the children's first use of words in speech production. Notwithstanding striking commonalities, IDS addressed to children with a hearing impairment is markedly different, which suggests that parents take this specific character of the children into account.

This paper presents a survey of the cell masses in the brainstem of the Australian lungfish <i>Neoceratodus forsteri</i>, based on<i></i>transversely cut Bodian-stained serial sections, supplemented by immunohistochemical data from the recent literature. This study is intended to serve a double purpose. First it concludes and completes a series of publications on the structure of the brainstem in representative species of all groups of anamniote vertebrates. Within the framework of this comparative program the cell masses in the brainstem and their positional relations are analyzed in the light of the Herrick-Johnston concept, according to which the brainstem nuclei are arranged in four longitudinal, functional zones or columns, the boundaries of which are marked by ventricular sulci. The procedure employed in this analysis essentially involves two steps: first, the cell masses and large individual cells are projected upon the ventricular surface, and next, the ventricular surface is flattened out, that is, subjected to a one-to-one continuous topological transformation [J Comp Neurol. 1974;156:255–267]. The second purpose of the present paper is to complement our mapping of the longitudinal zonal arrangement of the cell masses in the brainstem of <i>Neoceratodus</i>with a subdivision in transversely oriented neural segments. Five longitudinal rhombencephalic sulci – the sulcus medianus inferior, the sulcus intermedius ventralis, the sulcus limitans, the sulcus intermedius dorsalis and the sulcus medianus superior – and four longitudinal mesencephalic sulci – the sulcus tegmentalis medialis, the sulcus tegmentalis lateralis, the sulcus subtectalis and the sulcus lateralis mesencephali – could be distinguished. Two obliquely oriented grooves, present in the isthmic region – the sulcus isthmi dorsalis and ventralis – deviate from the overall longitudinal pattern of the other sulci. Although in <i>Neoceratodus</i> most neuronal perikarya are situated within a diffuse periventricular gray, 45 cell masses could be delineated. Ten of these are primary efferent or motor nuclei, eight are primary afferent or sensory centers, six are considered to be components of the reticular formation and the remaining 21 may be interpreted as “relay” nuclei. The topological analysis showed that in most of the rhombencephalon the gray matter is arranged in four longitudinal zones or areas, termed area ventralis, area intermedioventralis, area intermediodorsalis and area dorsalis. The sulcus intermedius ventralis, the sulcus limitans, and the sulcus intermedius dorsalis mark the boundaries between these morphological entities. These longitudinal zones coincide largely, but not entirely, with the functional columns of Herrick and Johnston. The most obvious incongruity is that the area intermediodorsalis contains, in addition to the viscerosensory nucleus of the solitary tract, several general somatosensory and special somatosensory centers. The isthmus region does not exhibit a clear morphological zonal pattern. The mesencephalon is divisible into a ventral, primarily motor zone and a dorsal somatosensory zone. The boundary between these zones is marked by the sulcus tegmentalis lateralis, which may be considered as an isolated rostral extremity of the sulcus limitans. The results of this study are summarized in a “classical” topological map, as well as in a “modernized” version of this map, in which neuromere borders are indicated.

The development of the events sector over the last 40 years has shown a remarkable consistency. Not necessarily on the ground with specific events, but certainly looking at the management processes at a meta-level, there is a longitudinal pattern that has emerged. It seems the startling diversity of events, their independent development, the variety of personalities and work practices in every country and city of the world has produced a model of development. I have been fortunate to observe and, to a small degree, influence this development. I have experienced and worked in its various phases. From working in events in over 40 countries ranging from the Liberia to the USA, the pattern is unmistakable. This pattern is dynamic and self organizing. The development pattern creates five phases I have described here. The maturity levels become phases when we introduce the dimension of time. But what has this to do with ‘crisis’. In an innovative and disruptive industry such as events, crisis is one of the factors that powers the pattern in development. From the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), to terrorism, to the COVID crisis, these are stimuli that have help create a development model.

BackgroundExtensive research and policies have been developed to improve access to kidney transplantation among patients with ESKD. Despite this, wide variation in transplant referral rates exists between dialysis facilities.MethodsTo evaluate the longitudinal pattern of access to kidney transplantation over the past two decades, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult patients with ESKD initiating ESKD or placed on a transplant waiting list from 1997 to 2016 in the United States Renal Data System. We used cumulative incidence models accounting for competing risks and multivariable Cox models to evaluate time to waiting list placement or transplantation (WLT) from ESKD onset.ResultsAmong the study population of 1,309,998 adult patients, cumulative 4-year WLT was 29.7%, which was unchanged over five eras. Preemptive WLT (prior to dialysis) increased by era (5.2% in 1997–2000 to 9.8% in 2013–2016), as did 4-year WLT incidence among patients aged 60–70 (13.4% in 1997–2000 to 19.8% in 2013–2016). Four-year WLT incidence diminished among patients aged 18–39 (55.8%–48.8%). Incidence of WLT was substantially lower among patients in lower-income communities, with no improvement over time. Likelihood of WLT after dialysis significantly declined over time (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.80; 95% confidence interval, 0.79 to 0.82) in 2013–2016 relative to 1997–2000.ConclusionsDespite wide recognition, policy reforms, and extensive research, rates of WLT following ESKD onset did not seem to improve in more than two decades and were consistently reduced among vulnerable populations. Improving access to transplantation may require more substantial interventions.
