Polycrystalline nickel-based superalloys tend to have large grains within component areas where high loads are dominant during operation. Due to these large grains, caused by the manufacturing and cooling process, the orientation of each grain becomes highly important, since it influences the elastic and plastic behaviour of the material. With the usage of the open source codes NEPER and FEPX, polycrystalline models of Inconel 738 LC were generated and their elastic and crystal plasticity behaviour simulated in dependence of different orientation distributions under uniaxial loading. Orientation distributions close to the [100] direction showed the lowest Young’s moduli as well as the highest elastic strains before yielding, as expected. Orientations close to the [5¯89] direction, showed the lowest elastic strains and therefore first plastic deformation under strain loading due to the highest shear stress in the slip systems caused by the interaction of Young’s modulus and the Schmid factor.

In order to reveal the creep failure behavior of novel modified 310S austenite steel welded joints, the creep life and microstructure evolution of the 310S austenite steel welded joints were investigated in this study. The rupture life was assessed to estimate the damage of the welded joint based on creep rupture tests performed at 600 °C in the stress range of 170–238 MPa. Compared with WM, HAZ facilitated the occurrence of creep failure in long term creep due to the combination of a smaller hardness value, a more heterogenous microstructure accompanied by coarsened M23C6, a larger grain size, higher KAM and Schmid factor. Discontinuous Laves phases appeared near the boundaries between the δ-ferrite and γ-austenite grains in the WM, and dislocation strengthening and precipitation strengthening were observed near the boundary in the BM. Furthermore, segregation elements were detected by APT and EDS adjacent to the boundary. Cr and C segregation near grain boundaries weaken the creep resistance in long term creep service.

The evolution of textures, the degree of recrystallization and the mechanical properties of 7A65 hot rolled plates during re-dissolution were studied with different thicknesses (25 mm, 65 mm, 120 mm) and different degrees of deformation. It was found that different plates exhibited different trends of re-dissolution because the degrees of deformation increased and the degrees of recrystallization were different during the solution treatment. With the increase of deformation and static recrystallization degrees, texture types changed from Cube, R-Cube to Brass, R, Cube and Copper during the re-dissolution process. The value of the Schmid factor (µ(-)) was calculated and the value along the rolling direction was significantly larger than along the transverse direction, which led to a lower yield strength along the rolling direction. In terms of the average contribution of the yield strength, the strengthening of the grain boundary including LAGBs (low-angle grain boundaries) was found to play a more significant role than the effect of solid atoms and dislocation densities. Therefore, the 25 mm plate exhibits the best mechanical properties, with a yield strength of 565.7 MPa along the rolling direction.

The effect of grain-interior α precipitation on the β texture evolution of the near-β Ti-6246 alloy during through-transus forging was investigated in two-step sequential forgings. The microstructure and texture were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, electron-backscatter diffraction, and X-ray diffraction. The previous β forging was performed at 1253 K at 0.01/s, while the subsequent forging in the (α + β) region was conducted at 1073 K at 0.01/s. The forging in the β region facilitated the penetration of the interior α phase into β grains and reduced the formation of grain boundary α. The {001} texture intensity increased during the forging in the single β region. By contrast, the increase in the {001} texture intensity was moderate at a lower temperature (1073 K) because the Schmid factor (SF) value of the {110}<111> slip system drastically decreased, but those of the {112}<111> and {123}<111> slip systems increased before α precipitation. During α precipitation for all β forging ratios, the {110}<111> slip system was activated, resulting in a lowering of the {001} texture intensity. The lower the forging temperature before interior α precipitation under a constant total forging ratio, the more the {001} texture intensity was suppressed in the final β texture, accompanied by interior α precipitation.

In the recent past, several researchers have successfully modeled the complex fatigue behavior of planar twin-roll cast AZ31B alloy sheets. Complex components are usually hot-bent, whereby the microstructure in the hot-bent areas changes significantly. However, studies on the fatigue behavior of hot-bent magnesium alloys are currently lacking. Therefore, a novel, uniaxial hot-bent specimen was developed and optimized with finite element method simulations. Microstructural analyses with the electron backscatter diffraction method reveal that the hot-bending process changes the texture and increases the Schmid factor for basal slip in rolling and transverse direction of the sheet. In the subsequent quasi-static tension and compression tests, anisotropic and asymmetric yield stresses, lower Young’s moduli compared with the as-received material and macroscopic bands of twinned grains are obtained. Finally, the study proves that the recently proposed concept of highly strained volume can accurately estimate the lifetime, even by combining the as-received and hot-bent material in one fatigue model.

In the present work, the localized features of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) of our recently designed damage tolerance α+β dual-phase Ti alloy are investigated by the integration of electron backscattering diffraction and experimental and theoretical Schmid factor analysis. At the strain rate of 1.8 × 104 s−1 induced by a split Hopkinson pressure bar, the shear stress reaches a maximum of 1951 MPa with the shear strain of 1.27. It is found that the α+β dual-phase colony structures mediate the extensive plastic deformations along α/β phase boundaries, contributing to the formations of ASBs, microvoids, and cracks, and resulting in stable and unstable softening behaviors. Moreover, the dynamic recrystallization yields the dispersion of a great amount of fine α grains along the shearing paths and in the ASBs, promoting the softening and shear localization. On the contrary, low-angle grain boundaries present good resistance to the formation of cracks and the thermal softening, while the non-basal slipping dramatically contributes to the strain hardening, supporting the promising approaches to fabricate the advanced damage tolerance dual-phase Ti alloy.

Twinning behaviors in grains during cold rolling have been systematically studied in preparing ultra-thin grain-oriented silicon steel (UTGO) using a commercial glassless grain-oriented silicon steel as raw material. It is found that the twinning system with the maximum Schmid factor and shear mechanical work would be activated. The area fraction of twins increased with the cold rolling reduction. The orientations of twins mainly appeared to be α-fiber (<110>//RD), most of which were {001}<110> orientation. Analysis via combining deformation orientation simulation and twinning orientation calculation suggested that {001}<110> oriented twinning occurred at 40–50% rolling reduction. The simulation also confirmed more {100} <011> oriented twins would be produced in the cold rolling process and their orientation also showed less deviation from ideal {001}<110> orientation when a raw material with a higher content of exact Goss oriented grains was used.

Czochralski silicon single crystals were deformed in tensile tests along the direction at between 1173 K and 1373. Yield point phenomenon were observed in the specimens deformed at below 1273 K while continues yield was observed in the specimens deformed at above 1323 K. It is due to the effect of dislocation starvation in the used crystals. Work-hardening rates in stage II were consistent with those reported in fcc crystals such as copper. The onset of stage II was found to be active before the Schmid factor of the second slip system becomes larger than that of the primary slip system. Electron backscattered diffraction images indicated clear kink bands near grips and in the parallel portion. The kink bands were formed at the middle of stage I, which suggest that the formation of kink bands is a trigger of stage II.
