Playing Entropy Mastermind can Foster Children’s Information-Theoretical Intuitions

Conceptual descriptions and measures of information and entropy were established in the twentieth century with the emergence of a science of communication and information. Today these concepts have come to pervade modern science and society, and are increasingly being recommended as topics for science and mathematics education. We introduce a set of playful activities aimed at fostering intuitions about entropy and describe a primary school intervention that was conducted according to this plan. Fourth grade schoolchildren (8–10 years) played a version of Entropy Mastermind with jars and colored marbles, in which a hidden code to be deciphered was generated at random from an urn with a known, visually presented probability distribution of marble colors. Children prepared urns according to specified recipes, drew marbles from the urns, generated codes and guessed codes. Despite not being formally instructed in probability or entropy, children were able to estimate and compare the difficulty of different probability distributions used for generating possible codes.

The features of formation professional competences of an English language teacher (on the base of European Framework for CLIL teacher education)

Due to changes in educational system of Republic of Kazakhstan, i.e. with the transition into trilingual educa-tion the necessity of training future teachers working in polylingual groups appeared, as so the teacher is or-ganizer of receiving information. Today such training is being realized in more than thirty universities around RK. However, in spite of developing educational programs and realization of future teachers training, there are not standard requirements for selecting teachers yet. The omission of particular requirements influences to the teaching quality and education in whole. In the given article there are presented six competences, which are considered as main for teachers working in polylingual groups. Each competence is presented with the de-scription of main skills and proficiency. The usage of given competences allows to improve educational sys-tem.

A Cost Analysis of Implementing a Blockchain Architecture in a Smart Grid Scenario Using Sidechains

Smart grid systems have become popular and necessary for the development of a sustainable power grid. These systems use different technologies to provide optimized services to the users of the network. Regarding computing, these systems optimize electrical services by processing a large amount of the data generated. However, privacy and security are essential in this kind of system. With a large amount of data generated, it is necessary to protect the privacy of users, because this data may reveal the users’ personal information. Today, blockchain technology has proven to be an efficient architecture for solving privacy and security problems in different scenarios. Over the years, different blockchain platforms have emerged, attempting to solve specific problems in different areas. However, the use of different platforms fragmented the market, which was no different in the smart grid scenario. This work proposes a blockchain architecture that uses sidechains to make the system scalable and adaptable. We used three blockchains to ensure privacy, security, and trust in the system. To universalize the proposed solution, we used the Open Smart Grid Protocol and smart contracts. The results show that architecture security and privacy are guaranteed, making it feasible for implementation in real systems; although scalability issues regarding the storage of the data generated still exist.

For leaders, the first aspect of mastery consists of knowing the territory over which sovereignty is claimed. The next step toward mastery is gaining a deeper understanding of the environment in which states operate. However, mastery requires more than information and understanding. Leaders need tools to influence the dynamics of systems; or, in other words, to influence circumstances. People outside the state apparatus need to be induced to change their behavior, whether by persuasion, material inducement, or threat of punishment. Whatever the preferred method of influence, leaders must have the administrative capacity to apply it: they must establish their own bureaucracies or delegate responsibilities to other public or private organizations. The chapter then explains that the extent of control enjoyed by leaders today is vastly greater than it was a century ago. For example, advances in information technology are producing ever-larger amounts of data about the behavior of governed populations. Indeed, the obstacle to mastery may no longer be a dearth of information. Today, the obstacle might be a tsunami of information that overwhelms the capacity of leaders to make sense of it and respond appropriately.
