Nowadays with increasing theoretical criticism of positivism approach, many social and humanities scientists emphasize qualitative methods of research rather than quantitative data collection and statistical analysis. One of the common methods of qualitative research is critical discourse analysis. From the perspective of philosophy, critical discourse analysis is based on structuralism which emphasizes human role (i.e. reduces reality to human structures). This article is to present a review of the origins of critical discourse analysis and influential theoretical schools and expresses the most common and different approaches. The article analyzes the logical implications of the structural foundations of critical discourse analysis. It also comes to the conclusion that diversity in discourse is inseparable from social and political factors. As a result, linguistic diversity reflects structured social differences that creates it.

The research explored what types and how rhetorical strategy correlated with the linguistics features in e-petitions through Change.org entitled “KPK dalam Bahaya”. The data were e-petitions collected through Change.org. The analysis was holistically descriptive and included in qualitative research. The approach used critical discourse analysis by Fairclough that was using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and the strategy of rhetoric by Aristotle. Those theories helped the researcher to find out how the rhetorical strategy and the linguistics features created persuasive meaning. The findings indicate that euphemism, metaphor, connectives, logical connectors, rhetorical questions, and modality support the rhetoric strategy constructing the meaning beyond the words. Through one of the rhetoric strategies, pathos persuades the readers to agree to the argument and sign the e-petitions. Due to the emotional appeals, all of these language instruments help the rhetoric to provoke the readers significantly.

The phenomenal discourse on People Power after Pemilu 2019 is an opinion that was initiated by a central figure in Indonesia, namely Amien Rais. This discourse invited many responses, one of which was Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Yusril gave his argument about various complicated situations and the risk of governance under the umbrella of provocation of people power. The problem of this research is how is the structure of the text and the social context that builds Yusril's opinion on the discourse of people power? This research includes descriptive qualitative research. The approach used is the critical discourse analysis model Teun A. Van Dijk. The data analysis method used is the equivalent and contextual method. Data presentation is done informally. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that: (1) the structure of the text describes semantic, syntactic, and stylistic aspects; while (2) the social context that builds the discourse of People Power is the power and access that the author has.

The coverage of the Covid 19 vaccine on Kompas.com is the object of this research. The purpose of this study is to find out, analyze, and reveal how the political discourse in the news of the Covid 19 Vaccine and how post-commodification of information occurs through the news of the Covid 19 vaccine on Kompas.com. The technique used is documentation. This research is an interpretive qualitative research with a critical paradigm with Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. Discourse analysis in this theory is carried out at three levels, namely text, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice. The results showed that the political discourse that developed in the news of the Covid 19 vaccine on Kompas.com was in the practice of media commodification. Political discourse in the news of the Covid-19 vaccine is represented as an identity battle between related parties, especially in government circles. The news on the Covid 19 vaccine, narrated by Kompas.com, is very political to gain recognition, support, and representation of media ideology by turning news into a millennial industry, ammunition for political competition and political partisan identity within the government.
