Short lifetime or total absence of electron diffraction of ordered biological specimens is an indication that the specimen undergoes extensive molecular structural damage in the electron microscope. The specimen damage is due to the interaction of the electron beam (40-100 kV) with the specimen and the total removal of water from the structure by vacuum drying. The lower percentage of inelastic scattering at 1 MeV makes it possible to minimize the beam damage to the specimen. The elimination of vacuum drying by modification of the electron microscope is expected to allow more meaningful investigations of biological specimens at 100 kV until 1 MeV electron microscopes become more readily available. One modification, two-film microchambers, has been explored for both biological and non-biological studies.

SummaryTotal removal of a knee joint meniscus is followed by osteoarthritis in many mammalian species. Altered load-bearing has been observed in the human knee following meniscectomy but less is known about biochemical effects of meniscectomy in other species. Using pressure sensitive paper in sheep knee (stifle) joints it was found that, for comparable loads, the load-bearing area on the medial tibial condyle was significantly reduced following medial meniscectomy. Also, for loads of between 50 N and 500 N applied to the whole joint, the slope of the regression of contact area against load was much smaller. Following medial meniscectomy, the ability to increase contact area as load increased was markedly reduced.The load bearing area on the medial tibial condyle was reduced following meniscectomy.

An investigation was made on the super-gravity aided rheorefining process of recycled 7075 aluminum alloy in order to remove tramp elements. The separation temperatures in this study were selected as 609 °C, 617 °C and 625 °C. And the gravity coefficients were set as 400 G, 700 G, 1000 G. The finely distributed impurity inclusions will aggregate to the grain boundaries of Al-enriched phase during heat treatment. In the field of super-gravity, the liquid phase composed of tramp elements Zn, Cu, Mg et al. will flow through the gaps between solid Al-enriched grains and form into filtrate. Both the weight of filtrate and removal ratio of tramp element improved with the increase of gravity coefficient. The total removal ratio of tramp element decreased with the fall of temperature due to the flowability deterioration of liquid phase. The time for effective separation of liquid/solid phases with super-gravity can be restricted within 1 min.

Cardiac calcified amorphous tumors are rare non-neoplastic intracavitary masses with unknown cause. A 60-year-old man presented with sustained ventricular tachycardia. Transthoracic echocardiography and contrast-enhanced angio-computed tomography demonstrated an expanding 73 × 40 mm sized calcified mass in the left ventricle. He underwent successful total removal of the mass and cryo-ablation at the normal myocardial border. Histopathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of cardiac calcified amorphous tumors. The postoperative course was uneventful, without ventricular tachycardia recurrence. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of confirmed cardiac calcified amorphous tumors causing ventricular tachycardia and treated by surgical resection combined with cryo-ablation.

The formation of silver nanopetal-Fe3O4 poly-nanocrystals assemblies and the use of the resulting hetero-nanostructures as active substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) application are here reported. In practice, about 180 nm sized polyol-made Fe3O4 spheres, constituted by 10 nm sized crystals, were functionalized by (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) to become positively charged, which can then electrostatically interact with negatively charged silver seeds. Silver petals were formed by seed-mediated growth in presence of Ag+ cations and self-assembly, using L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as mid-reducing and stabilizing agents, respectively. The resulting plasmonic structure provides a rough surface with plenty of hot spots able to locally enhance significantly any applied electrical field. Additionally, they exhibited a high enough saturation magnetization with Ms = 9.7 emu g−1 to be reversibly collected by an external magnetic field, which shortened the detection time. The plasmonic property makes the engineered Fe3O4-Ag architectures particularly valuable for magnetically assisted ultra-sensitive SERS sensing. This was unambiguously established through the successful detection, in water, of traces, (down to 10−10 M) of Rhodamine 6G (R6G), at room temperature.

✓ Over a 22-year period, operations were performed on 263 patients for 288 primary benign tumors of major peripheral nerves. The tumors included 85 schwannomas, 197 neurofibromas, and six plexiform neurofibromas. Total removal was achieved in 83 of the 85 schwannomas, and 76 of these patients were available for follow-up evaluation. Motor function either improved or was unchanged in 87% of these patients and 85% of those with pain in the distribution of the involved nerve had either total or partial resolution of their symptoms. Of the neurofibromas, 123 occurred in 121 patients without von Recklinghausen's disease. All tumors within this group were completely excised using a fascicular approach to the tumor. Of the 99 patients available for follow-up evaluation, 90% had either improved or unchanged motor function and 88% had partial or complete resolution of pain syndromes. Fifty-nine patients with von Recklinghausen's disease had 80 tumors removed: 74 fusiform tumors (58 of which were completely removed) and six plexiform tumors. Forty-eight of the 58 patients with gross total removal of fusiform tumors were available for follow-up evaluation, of whom 83% had improved or unchanged motor function and 74% had partial or complete resolution of pain syndromes. All six patients with plexiform tumors had progression of symptoms postoperatively. One brachial plexus schwannoma recurred and was re-excised without subsequent recurrence at the 5-year follow-up evaluation. Several incompletely excised plexiform neurofibromas have recurred with a symptomatic presentation.

Anisakidosis is a parasitic zoonotic disease which can cause gastroallergic reactions in humans. In 2010, the European Food Safety Agency estimated that approximately 20,000 cases of anisakiasis had been reported across the world, with Spain having the highest number of infections in Europe. The blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou, Risso, 1827) is one of the most widely fished species worldwide and represents around 25% of the white fish eaten in Spain. The Spanish Food Safety Authority requires obligatory evisceration of certain fish species before commercialization, but not for blue whiting. Nevertheless, some supermarkets carry this out themselves to prevent human infections and negative customer reactions deriving from the presence of ascaridoid larvae. To assess the effectiveness of eviscerations at supermarkets, a total of 320 blue whiting specimens were examined. The risk of larval migration from the visceral cavity to the musculature in gutted and ungutted fish was also assessed. Our results showed a total prevalence (25%) of ascaridoids in fish gutted at the supermarket, and a direct relationship was found between the presence of larvae in the muscle and time until evisceration. In ungutted fish, the standard length and weight were higher for infected than for non-infected fish. Also, massive infections had a higher prevalence in these larger specimens, in which the viability of larvae was also high. Larval viability was not found to be affected by a 24-h refrigeration period. Anisakis was the most prevalent genus identified in the fish examined. The results indicate that gutting at the supermarket is not an effective method for the total removal of ascaridoid larvae and that additional safety measures are advisable.

Abstract Background The surgery of giant intracranial meningiomas (GIM) is difficult due to its large size, prominent vascularity, including and limiting visualization of various neurovascular structures, and severe cerebral edema. In this study, we will evaluate the surgical outcome of giant meningiomas according to our experience at our hospital in management of giant intracranial meningioma. Main body A retrospective analysis of 48 patients with histologically proven meningioma (≥ 6-cm diameter) who underwent surgical treatment at Benha University hospitals over a period of 5 years (June 2014/June 2019) is presented. Details regarding clinical presentation, imaging findings, surgical results and complications, and follow-up status were collected. The study group was composed of 41 females and 7 males. The age of the study group ranged from 38 to 69 years with an average of 49 years. The mean follow-up period was 36 months. Different approaches were used according to tumor location with the aim of gross total removal. Gross total removal was achieved in 90% of cases (43 cases). There were 2 cases with intraoperative complications not related to surgery. Recurrence was present in 4 cases. Mortality in this series was 4% (2 cases) with no reported intraoperative mortality. Conclusion Management of giant intracranial meningioma is a relatively common practice in neurosurgical centers in developing countries with the aim of radical total surgical removal being the first and most optimum option. Large size makes surgery difficult, but young age, meticulous surgical techniques, proper localization, trying to minimize operative time, and Simpson grade are of special value. Interdisciplinary cooperation is essential to avoid the common complications like pulmonary embolism (PE), postoperative hematoma in tumor bed that leads to bad surgical outcome.
