INTRODUCTION: India being the second highly populated nation in the world. HIV/AIDS has acquired pandemic proportion in the world. Estimate by WHO for current infection rate in Asia. India has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world. HIV prevalence in the age group 15-49 yrs was an estimate of 0.2%. India has been classified as an intermediate in the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) endemic (HBsAg carriage 2-7%) zone with the second largest global pool of chronic HBV infections. Safety assessment of the blood supply, the quality of screening measures and the risk of transfusion transmitted infectious diseases (TTIs) in any country can be estimated by scrutinizing the files of blood donors. After the introduction of the blood banks and improved storage facilities, it became more extensively used. Blood is one of the major sources of TTIs like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis, and many other blood borne diseases. Disclosure of these threats brought a dramatic change in attitude of physicians and patients about blood transfusion. The objective of this study is to determine the seroprevalence of transfusion transmitted infections amidst voluntary blood donors at a rural tertiary healthcare teaching hospital in Chhattisgarh. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out in Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Medical College, Kachandur, Durg. Blood donors were volunteers, or and commercial donors who donated the blood and paid by patients, their families, or friends to replace blood used or expected to be used for patients from the blood bank of the hospital. After proper donation of blood routine screening of blood was carried out according to standard protocol. Laboratory diagnosis of HIV 1 and HIV 2 was carried out by ELISA test. Hepatitis B surface antigen was screened by using ELISA. RESULTS: A total of 1915 consecutive blood donors’ sera were screened at Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Medical College, blood bank during study period. Of these 1914 were male and 1 female. The mean age of patients was found to be 29.34 years with standard deviation (SD) of 11.65 Years. Among all blood donors in present study, 759(39.63%) were first time donors and 1156(60.37%) were repeated donors. 1 patient was HIV positive in first donation group while 3 (75%) were positive in repeat donation group. 7 (38.9%) were HBsAg positive in in first donation group while 11(61.1%) were positive in repeat donation group. Two patients in first donation group had dual infection of HIV and HBsAg. CONCLUSION: Seropositivity was high in repeated donors as compared to first time donors. The incidence of HIV is observed to be 0.2% and that of HBsAg is 0.94%. Strict selection of blood donors should be done to avoid transfusion-transmissible infections during the window period.

Abstract Objective:To ascertain the frequency of markers of transfusion-transmitted infections. among blood donors in a blood bank at a tertiary care hospital Material and Methods:The study was a retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study, covering from 1stJanuary 2013- October 2018 and was conducted in the blood bank section, in the Department of Pathology at Dow University of HealthSciences, Hospital. All blood donors were screened for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV (I & II), syphilis through electrochemiluminescence and malaria (immunochromatography).Data was entered and subsequently analyzed by statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 21. The frequency of infectious disease markers (HbsAg, Anti HCV, HIV, syphilis, and malaria) was calculated among blood donors. Results:The total number of donors in our study was 29732, out of which 2587 donors were positive for an infectious disease.Out of the total donors, 29712 were male and 20 were female. There were 12 volunteer donors and 29720 exchange donors. The mean prevalence of donors with positive infectious markers was as follows; Anti HCV was 3 %, HbsAg was 2.9%, Syphilis was 2.0%, HIV was 0.5% and Malaria was 0.02 %. Conclusion:HbsAg and Anti HCV were the most frequent infections (3%) found in our blood donors, followed by syphilis with a frequency of 2%. Background: Transfusion of blood has become an important mode of transmission of infections such as human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B to the recipients. Blood transfusion is a boon in medical era if properly screened. The aim of study was to determine the seroprevalence of HIV donors in blood bank at M.Y.H. Indore.Methods: The study was conducted in the blood bank, M.Y.H. Hospital, Indore. Total 115775 donors attending blood bank were included in the study. All the donor samples were screened for detection of antibodies for human immunodeficiency virus by microwell Enzyme Linked Immunosorption Assay (ELISA) method. The seroprevalence of HIV infection among the donors was determined over a period of five years since January 2013 to December 2017.Results: Total 115775 blood donors were recorded. Out of total 115775 blood donors included in the study, replacement donor were 10766 (9.29%) while voluntary donor were 105009 (90.70%). In the duration of five-year study period, total 80 cases (0.06%) were reactive to HIV. Out of total 115775 blood donors included in the study, maximum cases i.e. 22 (0.08%) cases were found to be positive for HIV infection in year 2017. Out of 10766 replacement donors included in the study, 64 cases (0.59%) were reactive to HIV infection. While out of 105009 voluntary donors, 16 cases (0.01%) were found to be reactive to HIV infection. Voluntary donors are more as compared to the replacement donors. Number of HIV positive patients were found to more in replacement donor as compared to the voluntary donors.Conclusions: The seroprevalence of HIV is low in this study and hence it is concluded that the more the number of voluntary donors, the less the number of HIV positive cases. Voluntary donors can be motivated by proper health education and high quality screening programs.

Context: The current regulatory requirements for donor eligibility pose a challenge to blood centers in recruitment of voluntary blood donors, particularly in a developing country like India where awareness of the general population is low and myths about blood donation are prevalent. This study evaluates the reasons and rates of donor deferral in a tertiary hospital-based blood bank in western India.Aim: To find rates and reasons for deferral of voluntary blood donors in a city in western India.Settings and design: A retrospective study was done on blood donors during a 3-month period. Data collection was done by electronic records of blood donors.Materials and Methods: The study was conducted retrospectively at a tertiary care hospital in western India. All those who donated whole blood between 1st January 2011 and 31st March 2011 were included in the study. Data was collected using local blood bank software.Statistical analysis used: No statistical technique used as it is a data article.Results: 60.5% of donors were young, below 30 years of age. Donors were predominantly male (91.6%). Voluntary donors comprised 88% of the donors. Total deferral rate was 22.36%, with 17.29% permanent deferrals and 82.71% temporary deferrals. Main reasons for deferral were anemia 39.42%, low body weight 14.29%, hypertension 10.73%, age below 18 years 10.73% and history of medication 6.09%. The common causes of deferral between our study and other similar studies are the same.Conclusion: We concluded that majority of the donor population belongs to 18–30-year-old age group. This is encouraging with a voluntary blood donation initiative. Donor self exclusion and strict donor selection criteria application should be addressed by more proactive measures to make blood donation a safe and pleasurable experience.

Microbiological safety is very important aspect of blood transfusion services (BTS). Viral infectious agents possess a great risk of transfusion transmitted disease. On the one hand, blood or component transfusion is a lifesaving modality but on the other hand it can cause great mortality or morbidity in recipient if not used judiciously. The main aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis and Malaria amongst all types of donors donated at blood bank of Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi during the year 2017. This was a retrospective study. The blood donors included in this study include all donors coming directly to blood bank and blood donation camps organized by blood bank. Total donation during that period was 22255 units. A detailed questionnaire was given to the donors for registration. A total of 226 units (1.01%) were seropositive. The sero-prevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV, and Syphilis were 0.9% (21), 0.79% (177), 0.09% (22), 0.02% (6) respectively. No cases of malaria were detected. TTI can be reduced by motivating maximum voluntary blood donation, reducing replacement donation, public information and donor education awareness programme, stringent donor screening criteria and vigilance of error.

Background: Critical part of transfusion is effective screening of TTI, to reduce the risk of transmission is as safe as possible. The present study has undertaken to focus on seroprevalence of TTIs among both voluntary and replacement donors and also to project epidemiological data of TTIs in this community.Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted from January 2014 to December 2018. All blood samples collected from donors were screened for HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis and malaria according to blood bank policy. Before drawing blood, donors were asked to fill pre structured Blood bank questionnaire and consent form.Results: In this present 5-year study, total number of blood donor population was 54937, among them voluntary donors were 33891 and replacement donors were 21046. Out of 33891 voluntary donors, 33486(98.8%) were males and remaining 405(1.19%) were females. All replacement donors (21046) were males. The seroprevalence of HBV was highest, 1.82% (1003/54937) followed by HCV 0.31% (175/54937) in all the donors. The seropositivity for HIV is 0.23% (129/54937), for syphilis 0.04% (24/54937) and for malaria 0.01% (6/54937).Conclusions: National blood transfusion policy should be strengthening the standards and quality of screening across the country. For blood screening, resources and appropriate screening assays must be available at all health centres.

Background: With over 93 million donations made every year worldwide, blood transfusion continues to save millions of lives each year and improve the life expectancy and quality of life of patients suffering from life threatening conditions. At the same time, blood transfusion is an important mode of transmission of infection to the recipient. The present study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV infections in voluntary blood donors at a tertiary care teaching hospital in Mumbai over a decade.Methods: All voluntary donors reporting to the blood bank were screened for HIV, HBsAg and HCV by using the appropriate enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The study was designed for duration of ten years between January 2008 to December 2017. Medical reports of the donors were accessed from the blood bank records and analyzed.Results: A total of 8928 voluntary blood donors were screened. Amongst the blood donors, seropositivity of HBV (6% to 1.52 %) was highest followed by HIV (2.5% to 0.15%) then HCV (1.85% to 0.37%).Conclusions: Decreasing trends with low prevalence observed in the study is an encouraging sign supporting the growing awareness of these life-threatening diseases.
