Response to sowing time of three contrasting Australian cultivars of oilseed rape (Brassica napus)

SUMMARYSerial sowings of three cultivars of oilseed rape were made from autumn (May) to spring (October) at two sites, one in the north and one in the south of Tasmania, in 1981. The highest seed yields at both sites exceeded 5 t/ha from early sowing, ranging down to c. 2 t/ha from late sowing at a site where irrigation was adequate and to < 1 t/ha where late-sown crops suffered from water stress. The midseason cultivar Marnoo gave the highest yields at both sites, resulting from a combination of substantial (800 g/m2) top growth before flowering, excellent seed survival, a long period for grain filling and high oil content. The early-flowering line RU1 made much less growth before flowering; while this was partly made up for in later growth, nearly as many seeds per pod being retained as in Marnoo, oil content was low. The later-flowering cultivar Wesbell made more growth before flowering than the other cultivars, but when sown early it tended to grow tall, lodge and lose many pods in the dense, tangled canopy. This, combined with generally fewer seeds per pod, resulted in a much less efficient crop in allocation of dry matter to seeds and oil. Wesbell failed to flower uniformly from the late sowings, indicating segregation for vernalization response. The many immature seeds at harvest gave a low overall oil content. All three cultivars responded to vernalization and longer photoperiod in a pot experiment. While photoperiod appeared to be the main factor controlling the development rate to flowering in the field, there were interactions with vernalization response andtemperature.

SummaryExperiments made between 1967 and 1970 tested the effects of sowing oilseed rape on different dates in autumn and spring. Much greater oil yields were obtained from autumn sowings, due to higher seed yields and oil content, but the effect varied considerably between experiments, varieties and seasons. Autumn-sown crops flowered in late April or early May, and by the time pods were developing rapidly in June the leaves had senesced almost completely. Spring-sown varieties followed a similar pattern but about a month later, and did not reach the same peak in pod growth.There was a major effect of sowing date, late-autumn sowings (after mid-September) giving lower yields than early-spring sowings. The best autumn sowings (early September) gave about 3 t/ha of seed, but late sowings less than half this; oil content also decreased with delay in sowing – from 45% to as low as 38%. Delayed sowing restricted growth, leaf area and pod production, and also had a slight effect on seed weight. Frost damage on flower buds appeared to be the cause of reduced yield from early sowing (August) in one experiment. In spring, the earliest sowing (late March) gave the best yields. Vigorous but late vegetative growth from the latest sowing (end of April) did not lead to high yields, possibly due to pest and disease effects.

Few Irish men and women can have escaped the mighty wave of anniversary fever which broke over the island in the spring of 1998. As if atoning for the failed rebellion itself, the bicentenary of 1798 was neither ill-coordinated nor localised, but a genuinely national phenomenon produced by years of planning and organisation. Emissaries were dispatched from Dublin and Belfast to remote rural communities, and the resonant names of Bartlett, Whelan, Keogh and Graham were heard throughout the land; indeed, the commemoration possessed an international dimension which stretched to Boston, New York, Toronto, Liverpool, London and Glasgow. In bicentenary Wexford — complete with ’98 Heritage Trail and ’98 Village — the values of democracy and pluralism were triumphantly proclaimed. When the time came, the north did not hesitate, but participated enthusiastically. Even the French arrived on cue, this time on bicycle. Just as the 1898 centenary, which contributed to the revitalisation of physical-force nationalism, has now become an established subject in its own right, future historians will surely scrutinise this mother of all anniversaries for evidence concerning the national pulse in the era of the Celtic Tiger and the Good Friday Agreement. In the meantime a survey of some of the many essay collections and monographs published during the bicentenary will permit us to hazard a few generalisations about the current direction of what might now be termed ‘Ninety-Eight Studies’.

The licensing of provincial surgeons and physicians in the post-Restoration period has proved an awkward subject for medical historians. It has divided writers between those who regard the possession of a local licence as a mark of professionalism or proficiency, those who see the existence of diocesan licences as a mark of an essentially unregulated and decentralized trade, and those who discount the distinction of licensing in assessing medical expertise availability in a given region. Such a diversity of interpretations has meant that the very descriptors by which practitioners were known to their contemporaries (and are referred to by historians) have become fragmented and difficult to use without a specific context. As David Harley has pointed out in his study of licensed physicians in the north-west of England, “historians often define eighteenth-century physicians as men with medical degrees, thus ignoring … the many licensed physicians throughout the country”. One could similarly draw attention to the inadequacy of the word “surgeon” to cover licensed and unlicensed practitioners, barber-surgeons, Company members in towns, self-taught practitioners using surgical manuals, and procedural specialists whose work came under the umbrella of surgery, such as bonesetters, midwives and phlebotomists. Although such fragmentation of meaning reflects a diversity of practices carried on under the same occupational descriptors in early modern England, the result is an imprecise historical literature in which the importance of licensing, and especially local licensing, is either ignored as a delimiter or viewed as an inaccurate gauge of medical proficiency.

In order to determine the effect of cultivars and planting date on flax fatty acid profile, seed yield, and oil content, an assay with seven cultivars (Baikal, Prointa Lucero, Prointa Ceibal, Panambí INTA, Curundú INTA, Carapé INTA, and Tape INTA) was carried out at Parana Agricultural Experimental Station, Argentina. Significant differences among cultivars were found for content of palmitic (5–7 g/100 g), stearic (5–8 g/100 g), linoleic (13–19 g/100 g), saturated (11–15 g/100 g), and unsaturated acids (92–96 g/100 g) within the seven cultivars. The best seed yields were observed in Prointa Lucero and Carapé INTA varieties (2091.50 kg·ha−1and 2183.34 kg·ha−1, respectively) in the first planting date and in Carapé INTA and Prointa Lucero (1667 kg·ha−1and 1886 kg·ha−1, respectively) in the second planting date. A delayed planting date had a negative effect on seed yield (1950 kg·ha−1and 1516 kg·ha−1) and oil content (845 kg·ha−1and 644 kg·ha−1) but did not affect oil composition.

Abstract This paper argues that André Siegfried’s writings on Canada played a critical role in shaping his vision of French national identity. Siegfried’s studies of Canada have long been praised for their insight, but recent scholarship has emphasized his role in promoting both anti-Americanism and an exclusionary vision of what it meant to be French during the first half of the twentieth century. For Siegfried, Canada represented a site of managed contestation between British and French culture but also an early example of the deleterious effects of Americanization. His problematic view of French Canada as essentially conservative and unchanging in the face of such challenges reinforced his conviction that France itself should remain true to “traditional” values. The exclusionary implications of his ideas were most evident when Siegfried appeared to accommodate himself to the Vichy regime, but they also persisted after the Second World War.

In 1946 a visit to the barrow, which lies on the edge of the western scarp of Chinnor Common, and a cursory examination of the adjoining area, cultivated during the war, resulted in finds of pottery and other objects indicating Iron Age occupation. The site lies on the saddleback of a Chiltern headland, at a height of about 800 ft. O.D. Two hollow ways traverse the western scarp, giving access to the area from the Upper Icknield Way, which contours the foot of the hill, then drops to cross the valley, passing some 600 yards to the north of the Iron Age site of Lodge Hill, Bledlow, and rising again continues northwards under Pulpit Hill camp and the Ellesborough Iron Age pits below Coombe Hill. The outlook across the Oxford plain to the west is extensive, embracing the hill-fort of Sinodun, clearly visible some fourteen miles distant on the farther bank of the Thames. The hollow way at the north-west end of the site leads down to a group of ‘rises’ hard by the remains of a Roman villa, and these springs are, at the present day, the nearest water-supply to the site.

Many previously published studies of the behaviour of Pt and Pd in till and soils have been done in areas of complex stratigraphy or very thin overburden cover, making the interpretation of soil results difficult because of the many variables associated with these settings. At the Lac des Iles mine site in northwestern Ontario, there are excellent exposures of the overburden in a series of exploration trenches. Glacial dispersal trains can be observed in till (C horizon) geochemistry (e.g., Ni, Cr, Cu, and Co). Regional geochemical dispersal trains of elements, such as Ni, Cr, Mg, and Co associated with the North Lac des Iles intrusion, can be detected for about 4 km beyond the western margin of the Mine Block intrusion. Entire dispersal trains range from 5 to 7 km in length and about 1 to 2 km in width. The dispersal of North Lac des Iles intrusion rock fragments tends to mask the response of the Mine Block intrusion. Dispersal trains of Pt and Pd are not well defined and tend to be very short, <1 km in length, due to the initial low concentrations of these elements in C-horizon till samples from the Lac Des Iles area. An exception to this is the Pd dispersal train originating from the high-grade zone that is up to 3 km long. Pd, Pt, Ni, and Cu appear to be moving both within and out of the soil system downslope into surface and shallow groundwater. It is suggested that these elements, to varying degrees, are moving in solution. Airborne contamination from mine operations of the humus has adversely affected the ability to determine the effectiveness of humus sampling for mineral exploration at Lac des Iles. The airborne contamination likely influences the geochemical results from surface water, shallow groundwater, and near-surface organic bog samples, particularly for the elements Pd and Pt.

The many usages of the term ‘secularism’ have generated an ambiguity in the word; as a political guise, it may be used to engender anti-religious fervor. Particularly in regards to veiling among female Muslim adherents, the attainment of a secular state and touting of the necessity of dismantling religious symbols have functioned as linguistic shields. By calling a “burka ban” necessary or even egalitarian secularization, legislators employ ‘secularization’ as jargon for political ends, enacting a stance of supremacy under the semblance of progress. Secularization has come to function as a political tool - in the name of it, governments may prescribe which cultural symbols are normative and which are of ‘other’ cultures or religious origins. As such, the identification of some religious symbols as foreign and others as normative is a usage of secularization for normalization of dominant religious expression. In this, there is an implicit neocolonialism; by imposing standards of cultural normalcy which are definitively nonMuslim, such policies attempt to divorce Muslims from Islam.  Further, I intend to investigate the gendered aspect of secularization politics. By critiquing clothing and body policing of women, I will demonstrate how secularization projects use the female body and dress as a site for display. By rendering the female physically emblematic of the honor and virtue of an ‘other’ culture, those enacting secularization norms target women’s bodies to act as visual exhibitions of the dominant culture’s hegemony. Here, we see gendered secularization at work - female bodies become controlled by the antireligious zeal of the state, while the state carries out this control on the predicate that it is the religious group enacting unjust control. As such, the policing of female Muslim bodies is symbolic of the policing of Islam as a whole; it acts as an illustration of an imposed, gendered secularization project.

Early maturity is a major objective of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) breeding programs in western Canada. Maturity of crops is influenced by time of initiation and flowering. The presence of a vernalization requirement affects plant development by delaying floral initiation until the cold requirement of the plant has been satisfied. Five spring oilseed rape cultivars were screened for their response to vernalization. Vernalization treatments consisted of exposure of germinated seeds to 0–42 d at 4 °C. Plants were assessed under a 20-h photoperiod. In general, there was a cumulative response to vernalization, with a decrease in days to each developmental stage as exposure to 4 °C was increased. Vernalization treatment of 6 d at 4 °C was sufficient to decrease both the days to first flower and the final leaf number. The characterization of vernalization response is of interest because variation in flowering time in response to year-to-year variations in the environment could result. Henry Drysdale Dakin was born at 60 Fitzjohn’s Avenue, Hampstead, London, on 12 March 1880. He was the youngest of a family of eight, there being five brothers and three sisters of whom one brother and two sisters now survive. His father, Thomas Burns Dakin, had previously owned a sugar refinery in London, and when this came to an end he acquired an iron and steel business in Leeds, and the whole family removed to Yorkshire. After a brief spell at Merchant Taylors’ School, H. D. Dakin entered Leeds Modern School in 1893 and remained there for the rest of his school life. Five of the old boys of this school became University professors, and of these may be mentioned H. H. Turner, Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford, and H. M. Dawson, who was the first Professor of Physical Chemistry at Leeds, both of whom were elected to the Fellowship of this Society, and the latter, who was a few years senior to Dakin at school, became his personal friend at the University. Some years ago this school, which was formerly in the centre of Leeds, moved to the north of the city and was organized as four Houses, one of which is known as ‘Dakin House’; and thus Dakin’s memory is kept green in the school, and his story and prestige have become a part of the school’s history. Assistant to analyst After leaving school Dakin was apprenticed to the Leeds City Analyst, Mr T. Fairley. He remained in Fairley’s laboratory for four years and in later life he ascribed a great importance to the experience which he gained there. An analyst in this position held many public appointments which brought a great variety of work to the laboratory. Among other offices Fairley held that of official gas referee, and this involved a good deal of analytical work—such as tests for sulphur content—involving attendance at gas works, and this work usually fell to the lot of the senior apprentice of the time. Accordingly, much of Dakin’s early life was spent in the precincts of gas works. In spite of long working hours, however, he found time to become an angler. One of his holidays in later years was spent fishing in Ireland with his friend, Harold Dudley. Dakin was inclined to trace a connexion between this period in Fairley’s laboratory and his later interest in biochemistry, because of the experience he gained from the many analyses of water, foods and fertilizers which came his way, as well as from the examinations made for a number of poisons. He admitted, indeed, that he had revelled in books on medical jurisprudence; but he claimed that all this had helped him to realize that chemistry had a biological side.
