Quantitative analysis of Linum usitatissimum crosses for dual-purpose traits

The commercial future of Linum usitatissimum is intrinsically linked to its cultivation as a dual-purpose crop for producing increased seed and fibre yields. The present study evaluates 36 F1 crosses derived from nine linseed/flax accessions for their potential as dual-purpose cultivars and/or their suitability for extracting new recombinants producing high seed yield as well as increased fibre output. The quantitative analysis indicated that variation between the F1 families is largely but not exclusively due to the additive and non-additive (dominance) effects of genes. Dominance is high for plant height (H1), height at maturity (HMT), number of branches (NBr) and seed weight (SdWt) while 100 seed weight (Wt100) displays no dominance at all. The repeatability estimates representing the heritability of each trait, vary from low (0·20) for number of branches (NBr) to high (0·71) for height at flowering time (HFT). The dual-purpose traits such as seed weight (SdWt) and straw weight (StWt) were only moderately inherited while flowering time (FT) and various heights were rather highly heritable. A moderate and positive correlation (r=0·57) between StWt and SdWt, and a completely independent inheritance of Wt100 suggested that there are good chances of combining these traits into a single genotype. The phenotypic performance of the crosses also confirmed this trend and at least four crosses showed superior performance for both SdWt and StWt compared to their parental lines. All these crosses involved a linseed line (B3) as a common parent and the second parent was either another linseed line (A1 and A3) or a flax accession (K3 and L2); none of the flax×flax crosses showed good potential for seed yield. While all four crosses possess the potential to become highly productive, dual-purpose, hybrid varieties, the extraction of desirable inbred lines from them, however, may prove difficult because the superior performance of the hybrids seems largely due to strong unidirectional dominance and high SCA effects.

Abstract Rapeseed breeding programs are focused mainly on improving plant potential and seed yield. One of the ways to improve seed yield in oilseed rape is heterosis, which is hybrid vigor that results in a greater biomass, increased seed yield, and faster development. The purpose of this study was to estimate yield-related trait heterosis for single cross and three-way cross hybrids of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). A population of 60 doubled-haploid (DH) lines and two generations of hybrids were evaluated in field trials to assess six yield-related traits: plant height, number of branches per plant, number of siliques per plant, silique length, number of seeds per silique, and thousand seed weight. Heterosis effects for each trait were estimated by a comparison of the particular hybrid with: (1) the trait mean over both parents—mid-parent heterosis and (2) to the value of better parent—best-parent heterosis. Traits with clear positive heterosis and traits with varied heterosis were observed in this study. For the first group, we include plant height, silique length, and the number of seeds per silique—a large number of hybrids expressed significant positive heterosis for these traits, independent from the year of observations and the type of hybrid. For the second group, with varied heterosis, we can include the number of branches and siliques per plant and thousand seed weight. For these traits, hybrids exhibited both positive and negative significant heterosis, without a clear pattern for the years and types of hybrids.

Background: Seed yield is a very important trait for selection but shows low heritability and hence is difficult to improve. Since the productivity of linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) in India as well as Himachal Pradesh is low in comparison to other major linseed growing countries and states, improvement in cultivars for grain yield is a must. Therefore, the present study was aimed for studying the character associations in linseed genotypes for seed yield over locations. Method: The experiment was conducted during rabi 2019-2020. The experimental material for the present investigation comprised of 52 linseed genotypes grown over three locations in Himachal Pradesh i.e. Linseed Experimental Farm, CSK HPKV, Palampur (1290 m amsl), Shivalik Agricultural Research and Extension Centre, Kangra (700 m amsl) and Hill Agricultural Research and Extension Centre, Dhaulakuan (468 m amsl). Randomized block design with three replications was used. Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients were worked out as per the procedure outlined by Burton and De Vane (1953) and Johnson et al. (1955). Direct and indirect effects of component traits on grain yield were worked out using correlation coefficient of various traits as suggested by Wright (1921) and elaborated by Dewey and Lu (1959). Result: Correlation studies indicated highly significant positive correlation for seed yield with 1000 seed weight (0.965**) followed by harvest index (0.801**), secondary branches (0.585**) and a significant correlation with biological yield (0.269**). Seed yield exhibited a non-significant positive correlation with seeds per capsule. However, a negative significant correlation was observed for seed yield with days to 50 per cent flowering and number of primary branches. The path coefficient analysis indicated that 1000 seed weight exhibited maximum positive direct effect with seed yield (0.741) while others had a low direct effect. The significant positive correlation of number of secondary branches and harvest index with seed yield was mainly due to indirect effect via 1000 seed weight indicating that 1000 seed weight is the most important trait for the improvement of grain yield in linseed as per the present study.

The experiment was carried out at Agronomy Field laboratory, Department ofAgronomy and Agricultural Extension, university of Rajshahi, to study the effect of irrigation and sowing method on yield and yield attributes of mustard. The experiment consists of two factors i) irrigation viz. no irrigation (I0), one irrigation (I1)and two irrigations (I2) ii) sowing method viz. line sowing method (M1) and broadcasting method (M2). A split- plot design was used for the experiment by assigning the irrigation on the main plots and sowing method to the sub plots with three replications. Irrigation had significant effect on all the yield and yield contributing characters. The highest plant height, number of branches plant-1, filled siliqua plant-1, sliqua length, number of seed siliqua-1, 1000-seed weight and stover yield were obtained from I2 (two irrigations) and consequently it produced the highest seed yield. Sowing method also had significant influence on almost all the yield and yield contributing characters. All the yield contributing characters except number of unfilled siliqua plant-1were found best at line sowing method (M1) and consequently it produced the highest seed yield. However it could be noted from the study that the combination of two irrigations with line sowing method is better to get higher yield of mustard.

<p>Genetic parameters are important in genetic improvement and variety development. This study aimed to determine the effective characters that can be applied as selection criterion in soybean breeding using genetic parameters. About 100 soybean genotypes were grown in the Muneng Agricultural Technology Research and Assessment Installation from April to July 2020. The trial was conducted using a randomized complete block design. The results showed that high genetic variability was found on days to maturity, number of branches per plant, number of productive nodes per plant, 100-seed weight, and seed yield. The high heritability was shown by days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, and 100-seed weight. All phenotypic correlations were significant, except for the correlation between seed yield and days to maturity, plant height, number of branches, and number of productive nodes. The seed yield had no genotypic correlation with all agronomic characters observed. The genotypic correlation was only significant for plant height and number of productive nodes, number of branches and number of filled pods, as well as number of productive nodes and 100-seed weight. Therefore, the improvement of seed yield can be conducted through direct selection using the seed yield parameter or indirectly using the 100-seed weight.<br /><br /></p>

This study was conducted to determine the effect of different nitrogen and phosphorus doses on yield and yield parameters of safflower. Experiment designed in split plots of randomized complete blocks with three replications. The treatments consisted of four nitrogen doses 0, 4, 8, 12 kg N/da as the main plots and four phosphorus doses (0, 4, 8, 12 kg P2O5/da) as the subplots. According to the results, nitrogen and phosphorus doses change has positive effects on day of rosette stage, flowering date, day of maturity, plant height, number of side branches, number of table, weight per thousand seeds and seed yield. It was determined that, plant height, number of branches, head number, head diameter, 1000 seed weight, hull-kernell ratio, yield, and crude oil rate ranged from 48.5 -54.5 cm, 2.6-3.6, 3.6-4.7, 19.73-22.28 mm, 34.79-37.43 g, 57.06%-59.37%, 82.17-182.23 kg/da, and 35.35%-38.59% respectively. The highest yield was determined as 182.23 kg/da from 12kg N/da+12 kg P2O5/da fertilizer doses.

Variability in 66 accessions of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) was assessed for different agro-morphological and quality parameters. Variability parameters, correlation coefficients, clustering and PCA were performed for yield and its contributing parameters. A very good variability was found in number of branches per plant ranged from 5.4 to 14.4, number of nods per main branch from 10.22 to 26.31, no. of pods in main branch varies from 8.61 to 19.65, 1000-seed weight from 271.69 to 390.31and seed yield per plant varied from 31.32 to 100.3.The protein content (%) of the genotypes varies widely from 26.31 to 31.52.Positive and significant correlation coefficients were also obtained between grain yield and 1000-seed weight (r = 0.33**) and number of pods in main branch (r = 0.01*). Principal Component Analysis shows that PC5 explained 62.8% of the total variance and was most closely associated with number of pods per cluster.

A field experiment was conducted at the Agriculture Faculty Farm of Sebha University during the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 winter seasons to study the agronomic performance of seven pea genotypes with different sowing dates in sandy soil. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) using a split-plot arrangement with three replicates. The five sowing dates (30 October, 15 November, 30 November, 15 December and 30 December) were assigned to the main plots, while the seven pea genotypes (Ambassador, Pollon, MG130256, G22765-2c, 89-P-109-11, No. 252, Victory Freezer and Master B) were allocated to the sub-plots. The sowing dates had a significant effect on all the studied traits except seed protein content in both seasons. Early sowing (15 November) was better than the other sowing dates for all the traits except 100-seed weight. There were significant differences between the pea genotypes for all the traits in the two growing seasons. The Victory Freezer genotype surpassed the other genotypes for all traits except number of branches plant-1 in the second season, 100-seed weight and seed protein content. The highest values for number of branches plant−1 in the second season and for seed protein content were obtained for the G22765-2c genotype, while the maximum values of 100-seed weight were recorded for the MG130256 genotype. A significant interaction between sowing dates and pea genotypes was detected for the length of the period from emergence to initial flowering, number of pods plant−1, seed yield plant−1 and seed yield ha-1 in both seasons. The longest period from emergence to initial flowering was obtained for the Victory Freezer pea variety sown on 30 November, while the highest values of pods plant−1, seed yield plant−1 and seed yield ha−1 were gained by sowing the Victory Freezer pea genotype on 15 November.

Studies on genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis were carried out with 38 accessions of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) evaluated in two environments i. e. kharif 2013 (E1) and kharif 2014 (E2) at Research field of NBPGR, Regional Station Jodhpur, India. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits. Genotypic coefficient of variation was highest for number of clusters per plant followed by number of pods per plant in both the environments. High broad sense heritability along with high genetic advance for seed yield per plant, 100 seed weight, pod length, number of pods per plant, peduncle length, number of clusters per plant, number of branches per plant and plant height indicated the presence of additive gene effects for these traits in cowpea. In both the environments seed yield per plant was positively correlated with 100 seed weight, pod length, number of pods per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of branches per plant and plant height. The highest positive direct effect registered by number of branches per plant followed by number of clusters per plant in E1 environment and by number of branches per plant followed by plant height in E2 environment. The traits like 100 seed weight, plant height, number of pods per plant number of clusters per plant and number of branches per plant were identified as selection criteria for obtaining good parental lines in cowpea breeding programmes.

Five flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) cultivars, Dufferin, McGregor, Linott, NorLin and NorMan were grown in the field in 1985, 1986 and 1987 at seeding rates of 200, 400, 600 and 800 seeds m−2. Averaged over all cultivars and years, as seeding rate increased from 200 to 800 seeds m−2, maturity was hastened 2.1 d, seed weight decreased 0.16 g 1000−1 seeds, oil content decreased 0.6%, iodine number decreased 1.3 units and volume weight was not markedly changed. Lodging increased and basal branching decreased from 1.68 to 0.18 branches per plant as seeding rate increased. Plant height increased 0.6 cm from the 200 to the 400 seeds m−2 rate then decreased 1.8 cm from the 400 to the 800 seeds m−2 rate. Seed yield increased from 110 to 124 g m−2 as seeding rate increased from 200 to 600 seeds m−2, then decreased to 121 g m−2 at 800 seeds m−2. Although yields of the five cultivars varied somewhat in their response to seeding rate and year, most yielded near optimum at the 600 seeds m−2 seeding rate.Key words: Flax, Linum usitatissimum L., seeding rate, lodging

This research was carried out in the Experimental Field of Tekirda đ Agricultural Faculty. Two common vetch varieties and 5 lines were sown with 150 seeds/m 2 plant density according to a randomised block design. Some important yield related characters such as plant height, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod width, pod length, 1000 seed weight, fodder and seed yield were examined. The results of variance analysis showed that the effects of genotype, year and their interaction on number of branches and number of pods per plant were all significant. In addition, the effect of year and variety on plant height and seed yield were found to be significant. Moreover, the number of seeds per pod, pod width and pod length were found to be significant in variety and year × variety interaction. There was only a difference between years for 1000 seed weight and fodder yield. According to the results, genotype 283 and Tokat had similar performance to that of commercial cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay). Especially the fodder and seed yield of genotype 283 were found to be higher than those of the cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay).
