Local processes involved in the generation of migmatites within mafic granulites

ABSTRACTProcesses involved in the formation and evolution of melts within the lower crustal mafic granulites are considered with reference to mafic migmatites from late Proterozoic (1200-1000 Ma) granulites of the Rauer Group, East Antarctica. Metaluminous dioritic and noritic leucocratic veins on scales of 1 cm to 1 m show agmatitic, stromatic and schlieren structures. These possible melts are compositionally distinct from charnockitic and enderbitic orthogneisses, which show intrusive contacts with the migmatites in areas of low strain.Important field relationships include the following:(a) Leucocratic veins contain plagioclase and rare quartz, coarse subhedral to euhedral orthopyroxene, ilmenite and apatite. Finer (2 cm) veins and layers are richer in mafic phases than larger (2-10 cm) veins.(b) Selvedges or melanosomes are developed between the larger melt areas and enclosing mafic gneisses. These melanosomes consist of garnet, orthopyroxene, plagioclase and biotite and are apatite-rich.(c) Pyroxene granulite palaeosomes typically display bleached zones (1-2 cm) adjacent to selvedges and veins, in which the modal proportion of clinopyroxene diminishes in favour of orthopyroxene.Geochemical and petrological studies demonstrate that localised or near-localised partial melting of the mafic granulites occurred during decompression from 8-9 kb to 7 kbar at a minimum temperature of 800-850°C. Geochemical mass balance calculations using measured vein, selvedge and palaeosome compositions indicate that near-closed system melting behaviour is likely for a large number of major and trace elements, but LILE behaviour is affected by the introduction of biotite probably associated with late stage fluids. Minor- and rare-earth element modelling predicts similar percentages of melting to those observed in the field, but yields reasonable results only when garnet is included as a minor residual phase. HREE concentrations in melanosomes do not show expected enrichments, probably as a result of later subsolidus changes including the breakdown of garnet during decompression.This study demonstrates that migmatites may form through the near-localised partial melting of basic lithologies within the granulite facies. The exact role of fluids in this case cannot be determined but melting is interpreted to be vapour-undersaturated. This process may be important in the production of volumetrically significant amounts of dioritic to tonalitic calc-alkaline magmas.

AbstractCretaceous granites are widespread in the North Dabie orogen, Central China, but their emplacement sequence and mechanism are poorly known. The Tiantangzhai Complex in the North Dabie Complex is the largest Cretaceous granitic suite consisting of six individual intrusions. In this study, zircon U–Pb ages are used to constrain the crystallization and protolith ages of these intrusions. The Shigujian granite is a syn-tectonic intrusion with an age of 141 Ma. This granite was emplaced under a compressional regime. Oscillatory rims of zircons have yielded two peaks at 137±1 Ma and 125±1 Ma. The 137±1 Ma peak represents the beginning of orogenic extension and tectonic collapse, whereas the 125±1 Ma peak represents widespread granitic magmatism. Zircon cores have yielded concordant ages between 812 and 804 Ma, which indicate a crystallization age for the protolith. The Tiantangzhai granites show relatively high Sr contents and high La/Yb and Sr/Y ratios. The Shigujian granite has positive Eu anomalies resulting from partial melting of a plagioclase-rich source in an over-thickened crust. Correspondingly, in situ Lu–Hf analyses from zircons yield high negative εHf(t) values from −24.8 to −26.6, with two-stage Hf model ages from 2748±34 to 2864±40 Ma, suggesting that the magmas were dominantly derived from partial melting of middle to lower crustal rocks. The Dabie orogen underwent pervasive NW–SE extension at the beginning of the early Cretaceous associated with subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific plate beneath eastern China.

General sequence establishment of geological Precambrian events and associating formations, which were created in them, to the results of isotope age definition, is the task, which has no single valued solution for southwestern part of the Ukrainian Shield. Important is to create a general development model, which will describe the modern geological structure of an area, structural and textural rocks features, accounting PT-conditions in the Earth's crust during the Archean—Paleoproterozoic. Isotopic age determination demonstrates, that from the moment of protolith creation (not later than 3.75 billion years ago, up to 1.9 billion years ago), intrusion of mantle melts and partial melting of the lower crustal rocks, occurred many times over. Pobuzhie formation cannot be imagined, as a single process of accumulation, plunge, crumpling into folds and sedimentary strata metamorphism. It is necessary, to take into account, the plume (mantle) component of the general geodynamic process. In the structure of the Bug megablock and Golovanevskaya suture zone, two main structural plans are displayed. The main part of the territory displays a region of areal distribution of Archean enderbites (generated 2.8 billion years ago) and Proterozoic granites (generated 2.03 billion years ago). The paper compares the temperature distribution with depth, corresponding to the thermal model of the metamorphic temperatures found in the samples, and the solidus temperatures of the basic rocks. It is shown that at the time of the metamorphism development, 2.0 billion years ago, the rocks were at a depth of more than 20 km, and before that — at an even greater depth. During the Archean and Paleoproterozoic, the center of partial melting was repeatedly renewed here, since the temperatures were higher than the solidus temperature of gabbro. Metamorphic changes (and more often migmatization, partial melting and following crystallization in the granulite facies conditions) happened after the presence of the thermal asthenosphere on the core—mantle border, and were accompanied by bringing the substance from it. Therefore the main part of modern surface is folded by palingenic granites. In Archean and Paleoproterozoic the composition of substances were different. After 2.0 billion years ago the level of modern surface was located higher. The second structural plan is presented with vertical structures, building of which often close to concentrically zonal or linear monoclinal. They are confined to fault zones and nodes of their intersections. These structures contain rock complexes, which did not occur until 2.0 billion years ago on any craton in the world.

In serial memory for spatial information, some studies showed that recall performance suffers when the distance between successive locations increases relatively to the size of the display in which they are presented (the path length effect; e.g., Parmentier et al., 2005) but not when distance is increased by enlarging the size of the display (e.g., Smyth & Scholey, 1994). In the present study, we examined the effect of varying the absolute and relative distance between to-be-remembered items on memory for spatial information. We manipulated path length using small (15″) and large (64″) screens within the same design. In two experiments, we showed that distance was disruptive mainly when it is varied relatively to a fixed reference frame, though increasing the size of the display also had a small deleterious effect on recall. The insertion of a retention interval did not influence these effects, suggesting that rehearsal plays a minor role in mediating the effects of distance on serial spatial memory. We discuss the potential role of perceptual organization in light of the pattern of results.

The article explores the role of antropoetonyms in the reader’s “horizon of expectation” formation. As a kind of “text in the text”, antropoetonyms are concentrating a large amount of information on a minor part of the text, reflecting the main theme of the work. As a “text” this class of poetonyms performs a number of functions: transmission and storage of information, generation of new meanings, the function of “cultural memory”, which explains the readers’ “horizon of expectations”. In analyzing the context of the literary work we should consider the function of antropoetonyms in vertical context (the link between artistic and other texts, and the groundwork system of culture), as well as in the context of the horizontal one (times’ connection realized in the communication chain from the word to the text; the author’s intention). In this aspect, the role of antropoetonyms in the structure of the literary text is extremely significant because antropoetonyms convey an associative nature, generating a complex mechanism of allusions. It’s an open fact that they always transmit information about the preceding text and suggest a double decoding. On the one hand, the recipient decodes this information, on the other – accepts this as a sort of hidden, “secret” sense.

Background: Cadmium (Cd) impairs gametogenesis and damages the blood-testis barrier. Objective: As the primary mechanism of Cd-induced damage is oxidative stress, the effects of two natural antioxidants, myo-inositol (MI) and seleno-L-methionine (Se), were evaluated in mice testes. Methods: Eighty-four male C57 BL/6J mice were divided into twelve groups: 0.9% NaCl (vehicle; 1 ml/kg/day i.p.); Se (0.2 mg/kg/day per os); Se (0.4 mg/kg/day per os); MI (360 mg/kg/day per os); MI plus Se (0.2 mg/kg/day); MI plus Se (0.4 mg/kg/day); CdCl2 (2 mg/kg/day i.p.) plus vehicle; CdCl2 plus MI; CdCl2 plus Se (0.2 mg/kg/day); CdCl2 plus Se (0.4 mg/kg/day); CdCl2 plus MI plus Se (0.2 mg/kg/day); and CdCl2 plus MI plus Se (0.4 mg/kg/day). After 14 days, testes were processed for biochemical, structural and immunohistochemical analyses. Results: CdCl2 increased iNOS and TNF-α expression and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, lowered glutathione (GSH) and testosterone, induced testicular lesions, and almost eliminated claudin-11 immunoreactivity. Se administration at 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg significantly reduced iNOS and TNF-α expression, maintained GSH, MDA and testosterone levels, structural changes and low claudin-11 immunoreactivity. MI alone or associated with Se at 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg significantly reduced iNOS and TNF-α expression and MDA levels, increased GSH and testosterone levels, ameliorated structural organization and increased claudin-11 patches number. Conclusion: We demonstrated a protective effect of MI, a minor role of Se and an evident positive role of the association between MI and Se on Cd-induced damages of the testis. MI alone or associated with Se might protect testes in subjects exposed to toxicants, at least to those with behavior similar to Cd.

Abstract We performed phase equilibrium experiments on a natural Ca-poor pelite at 3 GPa, 750-1000 °C, under moderately oxidizing conditions, simulating the partial melting of such lithologies in subduction zones. Experiments investigated the effect of sulphur addition on phase equilibria and compositions, with S contents of up to ∼ 2.2 wt. %. Run products were characterized for their major and trace element contents, in order to shed light on the role of sulphur on the trace element patterns of melts produced by partial melting of oceanic Ca-poor sediments. Results show that sulphur addition leads to the replacement of phengite by biotite along with the progressive consumption of garnet, which is replaced by an orthopyroxene-kyanite assemblage at the highest sulphur content investigated. All Fe-Mg silicate phases produced with sulphur, including melt, have higher MgO/(MgO+FeO) ratios (relative to S-free/poor conditions), owing to Fe being primarily locked up by sulphide in the investigated redox range. Secular infiltration of the mantle wedge by such MgO and K2O-rich melts may have contributed to the Mg and K-rich character of the modern continental crust. Addition of sulphur does not affect significantly the stability of the main accessory phases controlling the behaviour of trace elements (monazite, rutile and zircon), although our results suggest that monazite solubility is sensitive to S content at the conditions investigated. The low temperature (∼ 800 °C) S-bearing and Ca-poor sediment sourced slab melts show Th and La abundances, Th/La systematics and HFSE signatures in agreement with the characteristics of sediment-rich arc magmas. Because high S contents diminish phengite and garnet stabilities, S-rich and Ca-poor sediment sourced slab melts have higher contents of Rb, B, Li (to a lesser extent), and HREE. The highest ratios of La/Yb are observed in sulphur-poor runs (with a high proportion of garnet, which retains HREE) and beyond the monazite out curve (which retains LREE). Sulphides appear to be relatively Pb-poor and impart high Pb/Ce ratio to coexisting melts, even at high S content. Overall, our results show that Phanerozoic arc magmas from high sediment flux margins owe their geochemical signature to the subduction of terrigenous, sometimes S-rich, sediments. In contrast, subduction of such lithologies during Archean appears unlikely or unrecorded.

During development, mesodiencephalic dopaminergic (mdDA) neurons form into different molecular subsets. Knowledge of which factors contribute to the specification of these subsets is currently insufficient. In this study, we examined the role of Tcf4, a member of the E-box protein family, in mdDA neuronal development and subset specification. We show that Tcf4 is expressed throughout development, but is no longer detected in adult midbrain. Deletion of Tcf4 results in an initial increase in TH-expressing neurons at E11.5, but this normalizes at later embryonic stages. However, the caudal subset marker Nxph3 and rostral subset marker Ahd2 are affected at E14.5, indicating that Tcf4 is involved in correct differentiation of mdDA neuronal subsets. At P0, expression of these markers partially recovers, whereas expression of Th transcript and TH protein appears to be affected in lateral parts of the mdDA neuronal population. The initial increase in TH-expressing cells and delay in subset specification could be due to the increase in expression of the bHLH factor Ascl1, known for its role in mdDA neuronal differentiation, upon loss of Tcf4. Taken together, our data identified a minor role for Tcf4 in mdDA neuronal development and subset specification.

The current paradigm of urinary tract infection (UTI) pathogenesis takes into account the contamination of the periurethral space by specific uropathogens residing in the gut, which is followed by urethral colonization and pathogen ascension to the urinary bladder. Consequently, studying the relationship between gut microbiota and the subsequent development of bacteriuria and UTI represents an important field of research. However, the well-established diagnostic and therapeutic paradigm for urinary tract infections (UTIs) has come into question with the discovery of a multifaceted, symbiotic microbiome in the healthy urogenital tract. More specifically, emerging data suggest that vaginal dysbiosis may result in Escherichia coli colonization and prompt recurrent UTIs, while urinary microbiome perturbations may precede the development of UTIs and other pathologic conditions of the urinary system. The question is whether these findings can be exploited for risk reduction and treatment purposes. This review aimed to appraise the three aforementioned specific microbiomes regarding their potential influence on UTI development by focusing on the recent studies in the field and assessing the potential linkages between these different niches, as well as evaluating the state of translational research for novel therapeutic and preventative approaches.

AbstractThe recent suggestion that the late medieval Eurasian plague pandemic, the Black Death, had its origins in the thirteenth century rather than the fourteenth century has brought new scrutiny to texts reporting ‘epidemics’ in the earlier period. Evidence both from Song China and Iran suggests that plague was involved in major sieges laid by the Mongols between the 1210s and the 1250s, including the siege of Baghdad in 1258 which resulted in the fall of the Abbasid caliphate. In fact, re-examination of multiple historical accounts in the two centuries after the siege of Baghdad shows that the role of epidemic disease in the Mongol attacks was commonly known among chroniclers in Syria and Egypt, raising the question why these outbreaks have been overlooked in modern historiography of plague. The present study looks in detail at the evidence in Arabic sources for disease outbreaks after the siege of Baghdad in Iraq and its surrounding regions. We find subtle factors in the documentary record to explain why, even though plague received new scrutiny from physicians in the period, it remained a minor feature in stories about the Mongol invasion of western Asia. In contemporary understandings of the genesis of epidemics, the Mongols were not seen to have brought plague to Baghdad; they caused plague to arise by their rampant destruction. When an even bigger wave of plague struck the Islamic world in the fourteenth century, no association was made with the thirteenth-century episode. Rather, plague was now associated with the Mongol world as a whole.

Heredity is generally felt to play a minor role in the development of cancer. This review critically examines this assumption. Topics discussed include evidence for heritable predisposition in animals and humans; the potential importance of genetic-environmental interactions; approaches that are being used to successfully locate genes responsible for heritable predisposition; comparability of genetic findings among heritable and corresponding sporadic malignancies; and future research directions. Breast, colon, and lung cancer are used to exemplify clinical and research activity in familial cancer; clinical phenotypes, segregation and linkage analyses, models for environmental interactions with inherited traits, and molecular mechanisms of tumor development are discussed. We conclude that the contribution of heredity to the cancer burden is greater than generally accepted, and that study of heritable predisposition will continue to reveal carcinogenic mechanisms important to the development of all cancers.
