AbstractIn this paper, I discuss some aspects of the design of undergraduate and graduate astronomy curricula, broadly defined, for developing countries. A fundamental requirement is to develop students' ability and desire to learn, both in university and beyond. I then discuss several aspects of the curriculum: (i) The programme of coursework in astronomy and related topics such as physics and mathematics; (ii) The associated practical and project work to develop skills as well as knowledge; (iii) Linking the coursework, effectively, to various aspects of research; (iv) Development of general academic and professional skills such as oral and written communication, teaching, planning and management, and the ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team; and (v) Orientation to the culture of the university and to the science and the profession of astronomy.To accomplish all of these goals may seem daunting, especially as many of them are not achieved in the most affluent universities. But much can be gained by recognizing that there are well-established “best practices” in education, achieved through formal education research, reflection, and experience. Simple resources, effectively used, can be superior to the highest technology, used without careful thought. It is often best to do a few things well; “less can be more”. And effective partnership, both within the local university and with the outside astronomical community, can also contribute to success.

Substantial differences were found between the 5% top achievers in science and the remaining 95% 9th and 12th grade students. While girls constitute 55% of the 9th grade population only 18% of the high achievers are girls, a ratio of approximately 1:3. The corresponding ratio in the 12th grade was 1:8, 1:5, 1:2 and 3:4 for physics, non-science, chemistry and biology majors respectively. A typical profile of a higher achiever is: A small family. Parents with more formal education holding more science related careers, and more books at home. School science grades are relatively high. Science and mathematics are liked more than other school subjects. Intends to study science in the university and aspires for a science related career. The gaps between the top % and the rest in biology and physics are larger than in chemistry and earth science. The high achievers excel more in tasks which require higher cognitive abilities and which are outside their area of specialization. Their attitudes toward science learning are considerably more positive. Finally, they exhibit substantially higher preference for questioning and lower preference for rote memorization.

In 2017, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FNM) of the University of Maribor entered the partnership of the project Innovative Learning Environments Supported by ICT - Innovative Pedagogy 1:1, led by the Institute Anton Martin Slomšek (ZAMS) and lasting from 2017 to 2022. Innovative Pedagogy 1:1 is a project focusing on the development of competences, which are “one of the fundamental prerequisites for lifelong learning and improved employability. One of the conditions for achieving this is the implementation of flexible forms of learning, which redefine the roles of all stakeholders involved: students, professionals and principals”. The basic focus is on developing digital competencies of students, pedagogical and non-pedagogical staff, and school principals. This research describes the ways in which the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, as an academic institution training pre-service teachers of Engineering and Technology, has supported project activities, how it participated in some of the project’s key working bodies, and what its contribution is. University of Kashan was founded in 1974 and is the oldest institution of higher education in Kashan. At the time of its foundation, only undergraduate courses in Physics and Mathematics were offered. The current activities of the university are classified into four sections of education, research, development, and side activities. The university is located on a 530 hectares campus, 15 kilometres outside of the town with several affiliated centres located near or at city of Kashan, Ghamsar, Niasar and Tehran. Presently, the university has nearly 300 staff and university lecturers and it has about 8200 students, studying in over 180 courses. Kashan University has awarded and certificated one of the most active universities in the Green Management. Some of the activities of Green Management of Kashan University includes, CCHP Plant, Sewerage Disposal, and Water saving policy, natural ventilation, using efficient applicants. The current paper studies some of the main activities of University of Kashan in Water conservation and water recycling programs.

The article presents an analysis of the development problems of project-based learning technology in Russian universities, which can make a significant contribution to achieving the goal of academic leadership. The issues of the formation of the competencies of a university graduate in the context of project-based learning are considered. It is shown that project-based learning should be included in a multifactor educational environment - the innovative ecosystem of the university. The relationship between the elements of the university’s innovation ecosystem, such as education, individual learning path, project-based learning, digital content, polylingual content, non-formal education, partnership programs, supervising, mentoring, design and interdisciplinarity, has been determined. The article substantiates the criteria for the effectiveness of project-based learning, and also offers options for the formation of the innovative ecosystem of the university, as a new trend in the Russian educational environment, which allows students to be involved in research and project work.

The article discusses the current state of professional training of engineers, in particular, electronics engineers in Ukrainian higher education institutions (HEIs) and explores best practices from US HEIs. The research outlines the features of professional training of electronics engineers and recent changes in Ukrainian HEIs. Such challenges for Ukrainian HEIs as lack of collaboration between higher education and science with industry, R&D cost reduction for HEIs, and downsizing the research and academic staff, the disparity between the available quality of human capital training and the demanded are addressed. The study attempts to identify successful practices of US HEIs professional training of engineers in order to suggest potential improvements in education, research, and innovation for training electronics engineers in Ukraine.

This paper explores the post-pandemic strategic reorientation of a master in leadership and change management, investigating the conditions for its success and the side effects. The Master, which is part of the Defense Education Enhancement Plan recently approved by the Italian Ministry of Defense, led in partnership by the Center for High Defense Studies and the University of Salerno, aims at developing strategic leadership and change management competencies. The virtualization of the project work sessions that was caused by the pandemic emergency produced unexpected consequences that led the master directors to refocus the program as regards its format and method. The case-study, based on direct observation, unstructured interviews, and analysis of written documents and recorded audio, corroborates the literature regarding the emerging innovative, learner-centered approaches in management education, showing the effectiveness of an integrated educational approach based on traditional in-presence lectures, as well as experiential and project-based learning. It shows how the adjustments devised to cope with the consequences of teamwork virtualization proved to be synergistic, delivering positive outcomes in terms of participants’ satisfaction, learning, and impact. Future research avenues and practical implications are also highlighted, with a focus on the internal and external conditions for successful project-based learning in a distance learning environment.

Over half of all students enrolling at a particular university in KwaZulu-Natal fail to complete a degree. This article is wanting to determine to what extent the marks they obtain for English and Mathematics at school impact on their probability of graduation at this university. In addressing this problem, other student specific factors associated with their gender, race and the type of school they have attended need also to be properly accounted for. To provide answers for this study, the performance of 24 392 students enrolling at the university over the period 2004 to 2012 was followed until they graduated or dropped out from their studies. A structural equation model was fitted because it allows one to separate a direct effect from that of an indirect effect. Gender, race and school background were found to be very significant with males, Black Africans and students coming from a less privileged school background having a smaller probability associated with eventually graduating from this university. Males tend to perform better than females in Mathematics, with females performing better males in English. More importantly, however, a single percentage point increase in one’s mark for English increases the probability associated with graduating from this university far more than would be the case if their Mathematics mark were to increase by a single percentage point. In the light of these mediated results, perhaps this university should be directing their efforts more towards improving the English (rather than mathematical) literacy of students entering the university.

The article is devoted to the meaning and use of the possibilities of color and pictorial combinations in architecture and design, when performing educational project tasks. The study examines the emerging problems in the organization of educational work. The purpose of the study is to create a comprehensive design methodology with the inclusion of a module of coloristic and color aspects. Possible methods of organizing project educational work are proposed. The advantages and disadvantages of performing these tasks are analyzed. The methods of project work are aimed at creating convenient and at the same time aesthetic architectural objects. The methods under consideration are based on practical work, which is the basis of any educational activity in the training of higher school specialists. When forming the educational methodology, the nature and technological possibilities of using color in the design of architectural and design solutions were taken into account. The presented project proposals are based on a practical experiment and demonstrate the possibilities of planning coloristic tasks. The study determines the problem based on the analysis of modern buildings and its architectural solutions. The analysis of this topic highlights the insufficient training of future specialists in the field of using the possibilities of color in architecture and design of residential and public buildings. The research suggests and analyzes artistic and aesthetic technologies of space organization. The results of the study put forward new tasks in the planning of educational design solutions, using color, harmony of the color palette, subordinate to the color and coloristic unity of the environment.
