Abstract Motivated by developments in information technology, recording personal parameters with health devices is effective in health promotion. Today’s indoor individual lifestyles often involve using electrical appliances. We developed a health support system combined with wireless electricity monitoring and investigated whether electricity use is associated with residents’ vital data and lifestyles. We recruited 116 participants in February 2013. Their vital and electricity use data were collected daily. They completed a self-administered questionnaire. Among participants living alone, electricity from 20 February to 11 March 2013 was negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (P = 0.008) and positively associated with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (P = 0.007) and neutral fat (P = 0.020) levels. Among all participants, electricity use was negatively associated with vegetable intake (P = 0.044) and step count (P = 0.040). Temperature sensitivity in winter was negatively associated with the LDL/HDL ratio for both men and women. For men, temperature sensitivity in winter was negatively related with alcohol intake; for women, it was positively related to body fat percentage and abdominal circumference and negatively correlated to vegetable intake. Temperature sensitivity in summer was positively associated with vegetable intake for men and women. In conclusion, electricity use was related to vital data and lifestyles and influenced by temperature.

ABSTRACT Background: Obesity changes the anatomy of the patient. In addition to the aesthetic change, the high percentage of fat determines evident functional changes. Anthropometric normality in measuring abdominal circumference and height can serve as a basis for measuring cardiometabolic risks of obesity. Aim: To verify if it is possible to determine parameters of normality between waist and height in people with normal BMI and fat percentages, to serve as a basis for assessing risks for obesity comorbidities. Methods: A sample of 454 individuals with BMI and percentages of fat considered within the normal range was extracted. It was divided into age groups for both men and women between 18 and 25; 26 to 35; 36 to 45; 46 to 55; 56 to 65. A total of 249 men and 205 women were included. Results: Regarding the percentage of height as a measure of the abdominal perimeter, the total female sample had an average of 44.2±1.1% and the male 45.3%+1.5. For women, this percentage determined the equation of the waist-height ratio represented by X=(age+217) / 5.875, and for men X=(age+190.89) / 5.2222. “X” represents the percentage of the height measurement so that the individual falls into the category of adequate percentage of fat and BMI. Conclusion: Between the stature of adult men and women with normal fat percentage and BMI, there is a common numerical relationship, with is on average 44% for women and 45% for men.

The aim of this study was to verify general and central obesity, as well as the association of anthropometric indicators with cardiovascular risk factors (CvRF) in teachers of the private network of Viçosa-MG. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 150 teachers. Body mass index (BMI), conicity index (CI), body adiposity index (BAI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), abdominal circumference (AC) and body fat percentage (%BF); systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP); glycemia (GL), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) were evaluated. The prevalence of general and central obesity was calculated in addition to the simple linear regression to verify the association of anthropometric indicators between themselves and with CvRF. General and central obesity was identified in 19% and 17% of teachers respectively. The best associations between anthropometric indicators were between BMI and WHtR (R² = 0.81), WHtR and AC (R² = 0.78) and BMI and AC (R² = 0.76), all of which were positive. Between anthropometric indicators and CvRF, the best associations were found between WHtR and TG (R² = 0.25), AC and SBP (R² = 0.18) and WHR and HDL-c (R² = 0.19), the first two associations being positive and the last negative. It was concluded that approximately one in five teachers presented obesity. The general obesity indicator, BMI, was positively associated with anthropometric indicators and with most CvRF. However, central obesity indicators presented greater explanatory power on CvRF.

Background: Oxysterol relationship with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors is poorly explored, especially in moderately hypercholesterolaemic subjects. Moreover, the impact of nutraceuticals controlling hypercholesterolaemia on plasma levels of 24-, 25- and 27-hydroxycholesterol (24-OHC, 25-OHC, 27-OHC) is unknown. Methods: Subjects (n = 33; 18–70 years) with moderate hypercholesterolaemia (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C:): 130–200 mg/dL), in primary CV prevention as well as low CV risk were studied cross-sectionally. Moreover, they were evaluated after treatment with a nutraceutical combination (Bifidobacterium longum BB536, red yeast rice extract (10 mg/dose monacolin K)), following a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design. We evaluated 24-OHC, 25-OHC and 27-OHC levels by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Results: 24-OHC and 25-OHC were significantly correlated, 24-OHC was correlated with apoB. 27-OHC and 27-OHC/total cholesterol (TC) were higher in men (median 209 ng/mL and 77 ng/mg, respectively) vs. women (median 168 ng/mL and 56 ng/mg, respectively); 27-OHC/TC was significantly correlated with abdominal circumference, visceral fat and, negatively, with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Triglycerides were significantly correlated with 24-OHC, 25-OHC and 27-OHC and with 24-OHC/TC and 25-OHC/TC. After intervention, 27-OHC levels were significantly reduced by 10.4% in the nutraceutical group Levels of 24-OHC, 24-OHC/TC, 25-OHC, 25-OHC/TC and 27-OHC/TC were unchanged. Conclusions: In this study, conducted in moderate hypercholesterolemic subjects, we observed novel relationships between 24-OHC, 25-OHC and 27-OHC and CV risk biomarkers. In addition, no adverse changes of OHC levels upon nutraceutical treatment were found.

Background Surgical site infections (SSIs) are an established complication following colorectal operations, with rates up to 30% reported in the literature. Obesity is a known risk factor for SSI; however, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, waist-hip ratio, or abdominal circumference are imperfect measures. The purpose of our study was to determine whether abdominal wall thickness (AWT) is predictive of SSI. Methods We queried our American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (ACS-NSQIP) database for patients (age ≥18 years) undergoing a colectomy at the University of Kentucky (UK) from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2018. The exclusion criteria included patients with open abdomens or the lack of preoperative computed tomography (CT) within 3 months of their operation. AWT was measured at the level of the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) on abdominal CT. SSI was defined by superficial SSI, deep SSI, and wound dehiscence. Results Of 1261 patients enrolled, 52.2% were female, with an average age of 57.4 years. More patients had laparoscopic operations (51%), and the median length of stay was 7 days. Our study demonstrated an SSI rate of 9.4% and a 30-day readmission rate of 11%. The overall mean AWT was 2.6 cm (range .1-13.1), and patients with the highest AWT quintile were more likely to develop an SSI than the lowest quintile (12% vs. 5%). After controlling for risk factors and confounders, the odds of an SSI were 3.6 times higher for patients with the highest AWT than patients with the lowest AWT. Conclusions Among colorectal surgery patients, AWT is an independent risk factor predictive for SSI.

Customization of mental health therapies needs to consider the differences in degree of brain maturity between young (18–29 years) and mature (30 years or older) adults as well as brain morphology among men and women. The aim of this study was to identify the significant dietary and lifestyle contributors to mental distress in these sub-populations. Independent repeated cross-sectional sampling was performed for over a 5-year period (2014–2019) to collect data from different populations at different time-points and seasons. A backward stepwise regression analysis was used on 2628 records. Mental distress in young women was associated with high consumption of caffeine and fast-food, and it was negatively correlated with moderate-high levels of exercise as well as frequent breakfast consumption. Mature women shared several common factors with young women; however, high fruit consumption was negatively associated with mental distress. For young men, high exercise, moderate consumption of dairy, and moderate-high intake of meat were negatively associated with mental distress. In addition, high fast-food and caffeine consumption were positively associated with mental distress in young men. For mature men, strong negative associations between higher education, moderate intake of nuts and mental distress surfaced. Our results support the need to customize dietary and lifestyle recommendations to improve mental wellbeing.

<b><i>Background:</i></b> Iron is closely related to metabolism. However, the relationship between iron and hepatic steatosis has not been fully elucidated. <b><i>Objective:</i></b> We aimed to investigate the triangular relationship between iron and hepatic steatosis and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in patients with obesity. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A total of 297 patients with obesity and 43 healthy individuals with a normal BMI were enrolled. Eighty-two patients underwent LSG. Anthropometrics, glucose-lipid metabolic markers, and hepatic steatosis assessed by FibroScan (CAP value and E value) were measured at baseline, and again at follow-up time intervals of 6 months and 1 year after surgery. <b><i>Results:</i></b> (1) Iron was significantly higher in patients with obesity or overweight than in the individuals with normal BMI (8.18 ± 1.47 vs. 7.46 ± 0.99 mmol/L, <i>p</i> = 0.002). Iron was also higher in subjects with high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia than non-corresponding disorders (all <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). Moreover, iron was significantly higher in the severe than mild or moderate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) group (<i>p</i> = 0.046 and 0.018). (2) Iron was positively associated with body weight, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, uric acid, liver enzymes, postprandial blood glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, free fatty acid, and hepatic steatosis (CAP value), and negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (all <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). Iron was also positively associated with the visceral adipose area in patients with obesity and negatively associated with the subcutaneous adipose area in patients with overweight (all <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). (3) Iron levels and CAP values were decreased gradually 6 months and 1 year after surgery (all <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Overall, our results indicated that iron is associated with hepatic steatosis in obesity. The iron level was significantly higher in patients with severe NAFLD than with mild or moderate NAFLD. LSG may reduce iron levels while improving fat deposition in the liver.

Introduction: Alcohol intake is positively associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, however no studies have investigated the association with lipoprotein sub-classes using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Hypothesis: We assessed the hypothesis that usual daily alcohol intake (volume), beverage type and drinking frequency influence plasma HDL sub-class concentrations as determined by NMR. Methods: Six hundred and ninety volunteers (389 women) aged 40 – 69 years at baseline (1990 –1994) participated in a cross-sectional study using the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study, Australia. Measures included self-reported alcohol intake using beverage-specific quantity-frequency questions (volume) and a drinking diary for previous week (frequency). Results: Median alcohol intake was 15.2 g/d (2.7, 32.0) for men and 1.0 g/d (0, 9.6) for women. Alcohol volume was positively associated with total HDL particle concentration in men and women. For men, a 10 g/d increment in alcohol intake increased total HDL particle concentration by 0.62 μmol/L (95% CI: 0.27, 0.98) and small HDL particle concentration by 0.34 μmol/L (0.01, 0.68). For women, total HDL particle concentration increased 1.06 μmol/L (0.60, 1.53) for every 10 g/d increment in alcohol intake. Alcohol volume was positively associated with large HDL particle concentration in premenopausal women [0.67 μmol/L (0.19, 1.15)] and small HDL particle concentration in postmenopausal women [0.82 μmol/L (0.14, 1.51)]. Beer, wine and spirits were all positively associated with total HDL concentration for men. Beer and wine were both positively associated with total HDL concentration for women. Drinking frequency was not associated with total HDL particle concentration or any of its’ sub-classes. Conclusions: Alcohol volume (and not drinking frequency) was positively associated with NMR-determined plasma total HDL particle concentration for men and women. These associations appeared to be regardless of beverage type, although comparison of beverage types was not possible for women. These results suggest that for any given weekly volume of alcohol, the number of drinking days does not influence HDL particle concentration.

Aim: To investigate the associations between high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-enriched miRNAs and the cardiometabolic profile of healthy men and women. Patients & methods: miRNAs were quantified using next-generation sequencing of miRNAs extracted from purified HDL and plasma from 17 healthy men and women couples. Results: Among the HDL-enriched miRNAs, miR-30a-5p correlated positively with HDL-cholesterol levels, whereas miR-144-5p and miR-30a-5p were negatively associated with fasting insulin levels and Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index. Overall, miR-30a-5p, miR-150-5p and sex contributed to 45% of HDL-cholesterol variance. A model containing only miR-30a-5p, age and sex explained 41% of fasting glucose variance. Conclusion: HDL-enriched miRNAs, notably miR-30a-5p, are associated with cardiometabolic markers. These miRNAs could play a role in HDL’s protective functions, particularly regarding glucose-insulin homeostasis.
