Objective To investigate the level of anxiety and its relationship with interleukin (IL)-10 (anti inflammatory cytokine that modulates mood swings) in a group of female soccer players. Methods Fifty-two eumenorrheic soccer players were evaluated (age 19.8 ± 4.7 years). The presence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and phases of the menstrual cycle were determined by a daily symptom report (DSR) kept for 3 consecutive months. The concentration of cytokine IL-10 was determined from urine samples collected at four moments: at the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle, and before (pre) and after (post) the simulated game, and it was quantified by flow cytometry (Luminex xMAP - EMD Millipore, Billerica, MA, USA). The level of anxiety was determined through the BAI anxiety questionnaire answered by all athletes at the same time of the urine collection. The Student t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation with significance level at 5% were used for data analysis. Results We showed that the prevalence of PMS among female soccer players is similar to that reported in the literature. In addition, we showed that the group with PMS has a higher level of anxiety compared with group without PMS (p = 0.002). Interleukin-10 analysis in players without PMS revealed that there was a significant decrease in the level of this cytokine before the game during the luteal phase when compared with the follicular phase (p < 0.05). The correlation analysis between IL-10 and anxiety showed a negative correlation post-game in the luteal phase in the group without PMS (p = 0.02; r = -0.50) and a positive correlation post-game in the luteal phase in PMS group (p = 0.04; r = 0.36). Conclusion Our results suggest that IL-10 may contribute to reduce anxiety in the group without PMS. This could be attributed to the fact that no IL-10 variation was observed in the group with PMS, which presented higher anxiety symptoms when compared with the group without PMS.

Background: Premenstrual syndrome is one of the common disorders in women, which occurs periodically in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. High blood pressure seems to be one of the problems that can occur with premenstrual syndrome. Objectives: This study aimed to compare blood pressure changes in two groups with and without premenstrual syndrome. Methods: This is a descriptive-comparative study. The population of the study was the students of Tehran Islamic Azad University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using a premenstrual syndrome screening questionnaire and blood pressure measurement that were then analyzed with SPSS at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: According to 1,408 questionnaires collected, 580 people had the premenstrual syndrome. Comparison of blood pressure before menstruation showed a significant difference between the two groups with and without premenstrual syndrome (P < 0.001). Conclusions: An increase in blood pressure in the group with premenstrual syndrome requires investigating hypertension and planning for educational programs for preventing and controlling blood pressure in people with premenstrual syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the circulating concentrations of the neuroactive steroids in response to an i.v. L-tryptophan (L-TP) challenge across the menstrual cycle in women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and in controls. METHOD: An i.v. L-TP challenge was administered eight times during 1 month to five women with prospectively documented PMS and five age- and body mass-matched controls. Progesterone, allopregnanolone pregnenolone and 3alpha-5alpha-tetrahydrocorticosterone were assessed 15 and 0 min before, and at 30, 60 and 90 min after the challenge, across the menstrual cycle. RESULTS: In response to L-TP challenge, only allopregnanolone concentrations were significantly increased across the cycle and this increase was of a greater magnitude in women with PMS. Pregnenolone and 3alpha-5alpha-tetrahydrocorticosterone concentrations were not affected in women with PMS or controls after L-TP challenge. CONCLUSIONS: The data provide evidence for possible interaction between the serotonergic system and the neuroactive steroid, allopregnanolone. Women with PMS demonstrated a more significant increase in allopregnanolone concentrations in response to L-TP challenge, which could be due to an initial low basal serotonergic tone in the luteal phase in the PMS group.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a cycle disorder which is commonly occured during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and will dissapear at the time of menstruation. Ninety percent of women on reproductive ages experience symptomps of PMS and 10% of them experience severe premenstrual symptomps that cuse physical disturbance, medical care necessity, even worst death. Hypertension is a risk factor for a PMS. The aim of this research is to find out a conection between PMS and hypertension. This research was designated using analytic observational with cross sectional approach. We used purposive sampling to get sample. Based on sample formula, we got 104 respondents which is consist of 52 women with hypertension and 52 women normotensive. To obtain data, we used shortened premenstrual syndrome assesment form (SPAF). Data collected were analyzed by chi square test. The result showed that the value of p = 0.00 (p<0.005). This result indicated that there is a conection between hypertension and PMS occurence in reproductive age. The probability of hypertension women to get PMS is 6.75.Keywords: Hypertension, Premenstrual Syndrome, reproductive age

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate possible correlations between aerobic and anaerobic fitness (in field tests) with performance during a 90 min friendly match, through the following variables: total distance covered, maximal running speed, number of high-intensity actions and number of sprints. Eighteen professional soccer players from a Brazilian elite team (age 23 ± 3 years, body mass 77.5 ± 8.9 kg) participated in the study. The athletes performed a Yo-Yo Endurance Test (aerobic fitness) and a Running Anaerobic Sprint Test (six maximal 35 m efforts separated by 10 s of passive recovery, anaerobic fitness). Data were collected during friendly matches using a GPS with 5 Hz technology. To establish the correlation between the variables determined during the matches, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used (significance level of p ≤ 0.05). A high correlation was found between distance covered in the Yo-Yo endurance test and total distance covered (r = 0.72; p < 0.05), number of high-intensity actions (r = 0.78; p < 0.05) and number of sprints (r = 0.88; p < 0.01) in the soccer matches. The RAST variables did not relate to the standards set during the matches (p < 0.05). From the results of the present study, it may be concluded that there is no correlation between RAST and friendly match data variables. However, better results in the Yo-Yo endurance test correlate with total distance, number of high-intensity actions and sprints during matches.

The aim: To evaluate the association between estrogen receptor (ESR1) α- Xbal polymorphism with estradiol serum blood level in the patients with premenstrual syndrome. Materials and methods: 50 women with premenstrual syndrome and 20 controls were examined. The level of estradiol was measured in the blood serum in both phases of the menstrual cycle by ELISA method. Polymerase chain reaction was used to study ESR1 gene polymorphism (A-351G variant). Results: The estradiol concentration was similar in two phases of the menstrual cycle between healthy women and patients with premenstrual syndrome. But the more growth of estradiol in the luteal phase was determined in the persons with premenstrual syndrome. The rate of GG genotype was the largest in women with severe premenstrual syndrome (χ2=3.52, p=0.06). Also, in the persons with severe premenstrual syndrome who had G allele (GG+AG genotype) the estradiol concentration in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle was on 50.00 % (p=0.02) higher compared to carriers of AA genotype. There was no difference in estradiol level between healthy women with GG+AG genotype and AA genotype. Conclusions: AG polymorphism of ESR1 gene may be the marker of development of premenstrual syndrome.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterised by cyclical physical, behavioural and psychological symptoms occurring during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (the time between ovulation and the onset of menstruation). The symptoms disappear or significantly regress by the end of menstruation. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a more severe variant of premenstrual syndrome. PMS is common and severe symptoms can have detrimental effects on a woman's quality of life. GPs play a key role in the diagnosis and management of these conditions. This article aims to provide an overview of the current evidence and guidelines for recognising and managing PMS in general practice.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate basal allopregnanolone and progesterone in both phases of the menstrual cycle in women suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and their response to a GnRH test. DESIGN: We selected 56 women (28 patients with PMS and 28 controls) aged between 18 and 32 years. Blood samples were drawn in both follicular and phases. Twenty-eight women (14 patients with PMS and 14 controls) underwent a GnRH test in the luteal phase. METHODS: We evaluated allopregnanolone by RIA, using a specific antibody. Serum progesterone and oestradiol were determined using a commercially available RIA kit. RESULTS: Luteal phase allopregnanolone concentrations were significantly lower in patients with PMS than in controls. Progesterone concentrations were significantly lower in patients with PMS in both the follicular and the luteal phase. Serum oestradiol concentrations were in the normal range in both groups of women, although slightly greater in those with PMS. Allopregnanolone and progesterone responses to a GnRH test were significantly blunted in women with PMS. CONCLUSIONS: Diminished concentrations of allopregnanolone and progesterone, its precursor, and a blunted response to the GnRH test lead us to hypothesise that patients with PMS may suffer from an inadequate production of ovarian neuroactive steroids, especially in the luteal phase. This would lead to an impaired anxiolytic GABA(A)-mediated response in stressful physiological and psychological conditions, and may in part explain various psychoneuroendocrine symptoms that arise during PMS.

SUMMARY The objective of this study was to determine the influence of specimen dimension and conditioning medium on the dynamic and static flexural properties of resin-based composites (RBCs). One conventional (Filtek Z350) and two bulk-fill RBCs (Filtek Bulk-fill and Beautifil-Bulk Restorative) were evaluated. Bar-shaped specimens with dimensions 25 × 2 × 2 mm (ISO flexural [IFT]) or 12 × 2 × 2 mm (mini-flexural [MFT]) were fabricated using customized stainless-steel molds, finished, measured, randomly divided into two groups, and conditioned in air or artificial saliva (SAGF) for seven days at 37°C. The specimens (n=10) were then subjected to dynamic and static three-point flexural testing. Data for storage modulus, loss modulus, loss tangent, flexural strength, and modulus were computed and subjected to t-test, analysis of variance/Tukey test, and Pearson correlation at a significance level of α = 0.05. For both IFT and MFT, significant differences in dynamic and static flexural properties were more prevalent between materials after storage in saliva. For both conditioning mediums, the strongest correlation between IFT and MFT was observed for flexural strength. While significant positive correlations were observed for all flexural properties with saliva, no significant correlations were detected for loss tangent and flexural modulus with air. For both IFT and MFT, storage in saliva appeared to be more discriminative than storage in air. As moderate to strong positive relationships exist between IFT and MFT for dynamic and static flexural properties, the mini-flexural test holds promise as a replacement for the ISO 4049 in view of its clinical relevance and greater efficiency.
