Critical phosphorus concentrations in parts of Macroptilium atropurpureum cv. Siratro and Desmodium intortum cv. Greenleaf as affected by plant age

Critical phosphorus concentrations were determined for different parts of Macroptilium atropurpureum cv. Siratro and Desmodium intortum cv. Greenleaf at several plant ages in order to establish an appropriate sampling technique for chemical analysis of phosphorus status. Critical phosphorus concentrations were derived by using a non-rectangular hyperbola functional relationship which allowed calculation of variance associated with critical values. When expressed relative to tissue dry weight, critical phosphorus concentrations in whole shoots declined from 0.30�0,03% (95% confidence limits) at 41 days from sowing to 0.09� 0.01 % at 77 days for Siratro and from 0.33 � 0.14 % at 45 days to 0.16 � 0.03 % at 73 days for Greenleaf. Similar declines in critical phosphorus concentration with plant age were measured for combinations of all parts of the upper shoot back to the fourth expanded leaf. Thus plant age effects and variability associated with each determination of critical phosphorus concentration would limit the practicability of phosphorus analysis in detecting marginal phosphorus deficiency. This especially applies to plants growing as perennials in pastures where identification of plant age is not possible. Plant age effects can be lessened to some extent when critical phosphorus concentrations are calculated relative to tissue water, but it is suggested that less empirical techniques of plant analysis are required if plant age effects on critical phosphorus concentrations are to be overcome.

Wheat plants grown at two levels of phosphorus supply were subjected to drought or given adequate water. Acid phosphatase activities in the youngest fully expanded leaves, and inorganic and total phosphorus concentrations in the plant tops were determined at four stages of crop development. Phosphatase activity increased with plant age, with phosphorus deficiency and with drought. Inorganic phosphorus concentration decreased with plant age and phosphorus deficiency. Drought markedly decreased the inorganic phosphorus concentration in phosphorus sufficient plants but had little effect on the concentration in deficient plants. Total phosphorus concentration increased as the plants aged and was greatest where the plants were phosphorus sufficient and adequately watered. Drought markedly reduced the total phosphorus concentration in phosphorus sufficient plants, but had little effect on the total phosphorus concentration in deficient plants. Leaf acid phosphatase activity was related inversely to the inorganic phosphorus concentration in the plant tops. Changes in activity with aging, phosphorus supply and moisture stress were associated with changes in the inorganic phosphorus concentration. An argument is developed which indicates that a single 'critical value' separating sufficient from deficient plants, either for phosphatase activity, inorganic or total phosphorus concentration, is not practicable. Different values will be required for different stages of maturity. Complications introduced by drought and aging, through their effect on phosphorus concentration and enzyme activity, were overcome by developing phosphatase zymograms. Two bands were specifically associated with phosphorus deficient plants irrespective of plant age or moisture stress. The technique offers further opportunity for studies in phosphorus metabolism and shou!d provide a useful means of diagnosing phosphorus deficiency in field groRn plants.

Summary. Six field experiments were conducted in the Murraylands and Mid North regions of South Australia between 1986 and 1988 to develop plant tests for diagnosing the phosphorus status of barley. The effects of applied phosphorus level on total phosphorus concentrations in youngest emerged leaf blades or whole shoots, and on shoot yield, were examined and critical ranges were established during vegetative growth. Experiments were conducted on a range of soil phosphorus levels with several methods of phosphorus placement and 2 barley cultivars. During early tillering, shoot yield and phosphorus concentrations in youngest emerged leaf blades and whole shoots were increased more by drilling phosphorus fertiliser with the seed (banded) than by spreading the same phosphorus rate over the soil surface and partially incorporating the fertiliser while sowing (broadcast). However, these methods of phosphorus placement did not affect diagnostic relationships between relative shoot yield and phosphorus concentrations in youngest emerged leaf blades and, as a result, critical total phosphorus concentrations were similar for both methods of applying phosphorus fertiliser. Estimated critical total phosphorus concentrations for both Schooner and Galleon barley were similar at each sampling time when allowances were made for minor differences in growth stages between the cultivars; even though phosphorus concentrations in youngest emerged leaf blades and whole shoots were higher in Schooner than in Galleon at adequate phosphorus supply. Between Zadoks scale 13.5 and 16.5 there was a linear decline in critical total phosphorus concentration in youngest emerged leaf blades with increasing plant age. A more variable, but steeper, decline was found for critical total phosphorus concentration in whole shoots. Critical ranges are proposed for total phosphorus concentrations in youngest emerged leaf blades and whole shoots of barley. The decline in critical total phosphorus concentration in youngest emerged leaf blades with advancing plant age was mainly caused by a higher functional requirement for phosphorus at early stages of growth and by increasing dry weight, cellulose and lignin content of youngest emerged leaf blades as plants age. Changes in the spatial distribution of applied phosphorus in relation to root growth did not seem to be important.

Abstract In order to examine the effect of plant age on asparagus yielding, the number and weight of spears were analyzed. The experiment was carried out on 1-, 4- and 7-year-old plants in the aeroponic system with recirculation. The results showed that the spear number and thus also the yield were not plant age dependent, while spear diameter and their weight were. Taking into account both crown weight and the age of plants, a 26% variation in spear diameter and a 27% variation in mean spear weight were explained. Determination of dry weight and carbohydrate contents in storage roots showed these traits to be independent of asparagus plant age, except for total carbohydrate content per plant. During harvest dry weight, % Brix, sucrose, fructan and total carbohydrates contents losses were also recorded.

Yield response of field-grown Virginia Bunch peanuts to a range of soil phosphorus levels, determined using 0.5M NaHCO3 extractant, in the top 10 cm of the soil profile was evaluated on Cockatoo Sands of the Ord River Irrigation Area. Critical levels of soil phosphorus (required to attain 90% of maximum yield recorded in fertilized plots) was 7.3 ppm for pods and 7.9 ppm for kernels. Yield increases obtained with higher soil phosphorus status were due to increased pod number and kernel size. Trends in tissue phosphorus concentration in uppermost fully expanded leaves were monitored during the season, and critical concentrations for 90% of maximum pod yield were derived. The critical concentration (0.30% P, dry-weight basis) did not change with time during the vegetative phase of development, but declined in a linear fashion over time during reproductive development, from 0.27% P at 60 days after emergence to 0.12% P at 100 days after emergence.

SUMMARYThe carcass composition of phosphorus-deficient heifers of lower body weight was similar to ad libitumand restricted-fed controls supplemented daily with an extra 12 g phosphorus. The skeleton of heifers fed a phosphorus deficient diet for 63 weeks contained 18·8% less ash than restricted-fed controls given an extra 12 g phosphorus daily, but not less than ad libitum fed controls. Supplements of phosphorus and energy had different effects on the weights and concentration of bone minerals in skeletal components. A phosphorus supplement increased deposition of phosphorus in head, feet and tail, limbs and vertebrae and increased phosphorus concentration in head, feet and tail, vertebrae, ribs 1–5 and ribs 10–13. Extra energy intake slightly increased phosphorus accretion only in ribs 6–9 but had no effect on its concentration in this and other skeletal components. Only one (40 weeks) of the six biopsy samples taken from the cortex of the 11th and 12th ribs during the course of the experiment reflected the effect of uncomplicated phosphorus deficiency. No treatment differences were found in biopsy samples taken at slaughter in spite of differences in rib 10–13 analyses. The implications of this are discussed as they relate to the use of this method to monitor the phosphorus status of cattle.

ABSTRACT The response of the pigeon crop-sac to systemically acting prolactin (injected subcutaneously) was evaluated by measuring the wet weight of the responsive lateral lobes of the organ and by determining the dry weight of a 4 cm diameter disc of mucosal epithelium taken from one hemicrop. Of several different injection schedules tested, administration of prolactin in four daily injections was found to yield optimal responses. When compared with a graded series of prolactin doses, measurement of the mucosal dry weight proved to be a better method of response quantification than determination of the crop-sac wet weight with respect to both assay sensitivity and precision. The submucosal tissue of the crop-sac was estimated to constitute about 64 % of the total dry weight of the unstimulated organ and it was found to be relatively unresponsive to prolactin stimulation in comparison with the mucosa. The lipid content of the mucosal epithelium was determined using unstimulated crop-sacs or tissues which showed varying degrees of prolactin-induced proliferation. The fat content of the mucosal epithelial cells increased only slightly more rapidly than the dry weight or the defatted dry weight of the mucosa. Suggestions are made for the further improvement of the systemic crop-sac assay for prolactin.

This study used a qualitative approach in which the focus of this study is Inspektorat role in preventing and detecting fraud at Dinas Pendidikan Sumenep . Primary data obtained by direct interviews with the parties directly related to the determination of the source of research data in a qualitative study using nonprobability sampling . The sampling technique used was purposive sampling . The conclusion of this study, role of the Inspektorat Sumenep in the prevention of fraud in Dinas Pendidikan Sumenep still not maximal . This is due to Inspektorat Sumenep not supervise from the planning / budgeting and not optimal in overseeing and assisting the implementation of the SPIP as an instrument of fraud prevention in Dinas Pendidikan Sumenep . The role of Inspektorat Sumenep in the detection of fraud in Dinas Pendidikan Sumenep done by conducting an audit of financial and asset management in each financial year.Keywords: fraud, government, inspektorat.

Tin (Sn) is one of the causative elements of the environmental pollution. As no certified reference materials for Sn are presently available, existing reference materials were analyzed for Sn by two independent analytical techniques; atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and neutron activation analysis (NAA). The results obtained by both methods were in agreement except for mixed diet which contains Sn in the range of 50 μ g/g. Further, tin concentrations in human and animal organs have been examined by AAS. Among organs tested tin concentrations in testes were the highest, 2.08±0.62 μ g/g dry weight (mean ±SD, n=12) in humans, and 1.45±0.55 μ g/g (n=8) in mice.
