The ability to identify our own body and its boundaries is crucial for survival. Ideally, the sooner we learn to discriminate external stimuli occurring close to our body from those occurring far from it, the better (and safer) we may interact with the sensory environment. However, when this mechanism emerges within ontogeny is unknown. Is it something acquired throughout infancy, or is it already present soon after birth? The presence of a spatial modulation of multisensory integration (MSI) is considered a hallmark of a functioning representation of the body position in space. Here, we investigated whether MSI is present and spatially organized in 18- to 92-h-old newborns. We compared electrophysiological responses to tactile stimulation when concurrent auditory events were delivered close to, as opposed to far from, the body in healthy newborns and in a control group of adult participants. In accordance with previous studies, adult controls showed a clear spatial modulation of MSI, with greater superadditive responses for multisensory stimuli close to the body. In newborns, we demonstrated the presence of a genuine electrophysiological pattern of MSI, with older newborns showing a larger MSI effect. Importantly, as for adults, multisensory superadditive responses were modulated by the proximity to the body. This finding may represent the electrophysiological mechanism responsible for a primitive coding of bodily self boundaries, thus suggesting that even just a few hours after birth, human newborns identify their own body as a distinct entity from the environment.

The effect of the drug Delcid 7.5 ® on the clinical, hematological and biochemical parameters of rabbits of the New Zealand breed, 6 months of age, when used in doses of 2 ml or 4 ml. Three times with a cutaneous application along the vertebral column from the head to the tail. The conducted studies allow us to conclude that after applying the drug in these doses for 3 days, there were no external signs of intoxication in rabbits. All the animals of the experimental groups were active. The reaction to external stimuli is preserved. Hematological parameters of peripheral blood (number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, hemoglobin, color index, the average hemoglobin content of PG in erythrocytes, mean corpuscular volume, the exponent of anisocytosis of red blood cells, etc.) of the experimental group after treatment in 5, 15, 25 days had no significant differences from those in the control group, this suggests that the applied drug to the skin along the spine from the withers to the rump at a dose of 2 and 4 ml has no Toxicological effect on peripheral blood. The leukogram of the peripheral blood of rabbits when using the drug did not differ from the control parameters. The analysis of biochemical parameters (activity of aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatinine, urea, glucose, total protein, bilirubin, etc.) of the blood of the experimental groups when applying the drug Delcid 7.5 ® along the spinal column at the maximum therapeutic dose did not reveal statistically significant differences from the control, which indicates that the drug does not have a genotoxic effect, does not interfere with the kidneys and metabolism in the body of rabbits. The results of the conducted studies show that the insecticide-acaricide drug Delcid 7.5® for veterinary use, developed by NVC Agrovetzashchita LLC, is safe for rabbits, and therefore it can be recommended for studying the effectiveness of acarosis in rabbits and other animal species.

Averaged evoked responses (AER) to tactile stimulation were compared for two groups of same-sex adolescent twins. An experimental group consisted of 5 pairs of twins who differed in repressiveness ratings based on the Rorschach; a control group consisted of 5 pairs of twins who were identical in repressiveness ratings. Significant amplitude differences ( p < .01) were found for three components of the AER for the twins who differed in repressiveness while comparable differences were not found for the control group. Sensitivity to the ideational effects of a subliminal visual stimulus was found to be associated with low repressiveness ( p < .05). These findings support the hypothesis that repressiveness is reflected in an intensification of attention directed to neutral external stimuli as demonstrated by an increase in amplitude of AER components previously found to be associated with attentional processes and a decrease in attention to internal, ideational processes as reflected in low sensitivity to subliminal inputs.

AbstractInteractions with the environment happen by the medium of the body within one’s peripersonal space (PPS) - the space surrounding the body. Studies in monkey and humans have highlighted a multisensory distributed cortical network representing the PPS. However, electrophysiological evidence for a multisensory encoding of PPS in humans is lacking. Here, we recorded for the first time intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) in humans while administering tactile stimulation (T) on the trunk, approaching auditory stimuli (A), and the combination of the two (AT). To map PPS, in AT trials, tactile stimulation was delivered when the sound was far, at an intermediate location, or close to the body. We first identified electrodes showing AT multisensory integration (i.e., AT vs. A+T): 19% of the recording electrodes. Among those electrodes, we identified those showing a PPS effect (30% of the AT electrodes), i.e., a modulation of the evoked response to AT stimulation as a function of the distance between the sound and body. For most sites, AT multisensory integration and PPS effects had similar spatiotemporal characteristics, with an early response (~50ms) in the insular cortex, and later responses (~200ms) in pre‐ and post-central gyri. Superior temporal cortex showed a different response pattern with AT multisensory integration at ~100ms without PPS effect. These results, representing the first iEEG delineation of PPS processing in humans, show that PPS processing happens at neural sites where also multisensory integration occurs and at similar time periods, suggesting that PPS representation (around the trunk) is based on a spatial modulation of multisensory integration.

Abstract Aim We aimed to establish a normative range of surface skin temperature (SST) changes due to blood redistribution in adolescents and to register the time needed for complete postural change-related blood redistribution. Methods The healthy volunteers (age 15–18, n = 500, M 217, F 283) were recruited for this prospective multicenter study. The volunteers were asked to keep one extremity down and another extremity up in supine rest, sitting with straight legs, and upright rest. We obtained temperature readings being taken from the tips of the middle fingers and temperature readings from the tips of the first toes at the ambient temperature of 25 °C and 30 °C. The control group consisted of a 100 of adult volunteers. Results The resting temperature of the middle fingers for a sitting participant was 28.6 ± 0.8 °C. The physiological change of this temperature during body position changes was 4.5 ± 1.1 °C and for most of the participants remained within the 26.5–31.5 °C range at 25 °C. For the toe, physiological skin temperature range was 25.5–33 °C. At 30 °C, these ranges were 27–33 °C for the fingers and 27–34 °C for the toes. On average, 2–3 min were needed for such temperature changes. Conclusion At normal room temperature, the SST of thermoneutral adolescents may vary within a range of approximately 5 °C only due to the blood redistribution in the body. This range is specific for each person due to individual peculiarities of the vasomotor activity. This normative range of SSTs should be taken into account during investigations of thermoregulation.

Brain areas representing the body can change in response to behavioral alterations. This idea is firmly established for the adult cortex in response to extraordinary alterations such as traumatic amputation or casting of the limb. Here we address how adult cortical sensorimotor processing alters in response to a subtle perturbation in the form of smartphone deprivation lasting for ~7 days. We quantified the sensorimotor processes associated with the fingertips before and after the deprivation in right-handed smartphone users. The measurements were contrasted with those of a control group with unperturbed smartphone behavior. First, smartphone tapping speed in daily life became slower after the deprivation. Second, according to reaction time tests conducted in the laboratory the asymmetrically superior performance of the right vs. left thumb was eroded by the deprivation. Third, according to EEG measurements at physical rest, tactile stimulation at the right thumb tip resulted in smaller signal amplitudes after the deprivation. Moreover, the EEG measurements during smartphone use revealed larger signal amplitudes for tactile stimulation at the right little fingertip after the deprivation. We show that cortical plasticity can occur by merely disengaging from a common day-to-day behavior. We suggest that in daily life the adult brain continuously and selectively updates its sensorimotor processing according to recent experience.

Previously, we have found that the addition of L-ascorbic acid to chitosan enhanced the reduction in body weight gain in guinea pigs fed a high-fat diet. We hypothesized that the addition of L-ascorbic acid to chitosan would accelerate the reduction of body weight in humans, similar to the animal model. Overweight subjects administered chitosan with or without L-ascorbic acid for 8 weeks, were assigned to three groups: Control group (N = 26, placebo, vehicle only), Chito group (N = 27, 3 g/day chitosan), and Chito-vita group (N = 27, 3 g/day chitosan plus 2 g/day L-ascorbic acid). The body weights and body mass index (BMI) of the Chito and Chito-vita groups decreased significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the Control group. The BMI of the Chito-vita group decreased significantly compared to the Chito group (Chito: -1.0 kg/m2 vs. Chito-vita: -1.6 kg/m2, p < 0.05). The results showed that the chitosan enhanced reduction of body weight and BMI was accentuated by the addition of L-ascorbic acid. The fat mass, percentage body fat, body circumference, and skinfold thickness in the Chito and Chito-vita groups decreased more than the Control group; however, these parameters were not significantly different between the three groups. Chitosan combined with L-ascorbic acid may be useful for controlling body weight.

Abstract. In the present paper we investigate whether patients with a clinical diagnosis of burnout show physiological signs of burden across multiple physiological systems referred to as allostatic load (AL). Measures of the sympathetic-adrenergic-medullary (SAM) axis and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis were assessed. We examined patients who had been diagnosed with burnout by their physicians (n = 32) and were also identified as burnout patients based on their score in the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) and compared them with a nonclinical control group (n = 19) with regard to indicators of allostatic load (i.e., ambulatory ECG, nocturnal urinary catecholamines, salivary morning cortisol secretion, blood pressure, and waist-to-hip ratio [WHR]). Contrary to expectations, a higher AL index suggesting elevated load in several of the parameters of the HPA and SAM axes was found in the control group but not in the burnout group. The control group showed higher norepinephrine values, higher blood pressure, higher WHR, higher sympathovagal balance, and lower percentage of cortisol increase within the first hour after awakening as compared to the patient group. Burnout was not associated with AL. Results seem to indicate a discrepancy between self-reported burnout symptoms and psychobiological load.

Summary. The disbalanced feeding and the uneven distribution of micro- and macroelements in the environment leads to a trace element, in particular hypomelanosis. To accelerate the growth and preservation of young farm animals include in the diet of various biological additives and drugs, which include selenium. For stimulation of weight gain in the livestock industry, as well as for the prevention and treatment of pathological processes in addition to micro - and macrouse amino acids, primarily methionine. The aim of this work was to study the influence of composition of DAFS-25+Polizon on morpho-biochemical parameters of blood and functional state of the liver in fattening bulls of black-motley breed in the conditions of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Experiments using were conducted on bull-calves of black-motley breed of the properties in the properties age from 6 to 15 months. The first experimental group during the experiment was additionally given the composition of DAFS-25+Polizon at a dose of 2 mg/kg, the animals of the control group received a standard diet. To assess the impact of the composition DAFS-25+Polizon on metabolism cattle studied morphological and biochemical indicators of blood and conducted histological examination of the liver. It is established that the use of the composition of DAFS-25+Polizon at a dose of 2 mg/kg increases the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin in the experimental group and reduces the amount of white blood cells. The serum content of total protein, phosphorus and calcium increases in the group of experimental animals. Microscopic examination of the liver revealed no changes in the structure of the organ and hepatocytes in the experimental group, whereas in the control group hemodynamic disorders and dystrophic changes in liver cells were observed. Thus, the use of the composition DAFS-25+Polizon at a dose of 2 mg/kg of live weight in fattening bulls black-and-white breed contributes to the increase of redox processes in the body, stimulation of metabolism, prevent the development of liver disorders of cellular mechanisms of metabolism, optimizes the structure of the liver, which generally provides higher productivity.
