Abstract This paper presents data from a cross-sectional study of the use of cohesion in Italian texts written by L2 adult learners and by native speakers. Twenty-six free compositions were analysed for cohesion: eighteen by anglophone learners of Italian attending first, second, third and fourth year of Italian at Sydney University, and eight by native speakers of Italian divided in two groups: one of students, who have either done their schooling in Italy or recently arrived in Australia, the other of Italian professionals living in Sydney. More specifically, cohesion was analysed for the three categories of reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion. The objective of the study is twofold: a) to compare learners and native speakers in their use of cohesion, and b) to observe the developmental sequences in the use of cohesion in the six different groups. Examples from the texts are given and a tentative interpretation of the data is presented.

This was a descriptive type of cross-sectional study conducted in three villages of Shahjadpur Upazila in the month of October, 2010 among the rural households who visited medical practioners for the last three months. It was aimed to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents, availability of prescriptions, diagnosis written, number of drugs and antibiotics including its duration written within the prescription. It also determines the duration of antibiotic, dose and course including the advices on life style mentioned in the prescription in particular. It was revealed from the findings that 73.27% respondents were within 15-44 years of age with mean age 34.8 years and SD ± 13.09. In this study 68% respondents were attended doctors chamber during last three months, of them prescriptions were available to 57% respondents for investigation according to the stated objectives. Number of drugs in one prescription was 3-5 in 77% prescriptions. On the other hand 58% prescriptions were having 1-2 antibiotics. However, dose of antibiotics were not mentioned to about 31% prescriptions only. The duration 3-6 days of antibiotics was mentioned only about 23% prescriptions. Advices on life style and diagnosis were mentioned only to 32 and 52% prescriptions respectively. The investigation also revealed the qualification of prescribers and found 22.64% prescriptions by non-qualified doctors. The finding of the study can be a basis to take appropriate measures among prescribers in the locality towards maintaining the standard and rationality of prescriptions for the patients seeking drug treatment for any type of ailments. It will also help practitioners to provide a rational prescription to the consumers in regards to the number of drugs as well as clarity of instruction of its uses in deed. Abstract Background The previous studies showed the correlation between HBsAg and serum HBV DNA levels was weak or missing. Objective The study aims to investigate the correlation between HBeAg and HBV DNA levels, and to find an alternative tool to evaluate the HBV DNA level for clinicians. Methods A total of 1020 patients with CHB were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We divided the patients into four groups as: HBeAg positivity and negativity groups, and high and low HBV DNA levels groups. Further, as per the levels of serum HBV DNA, we performed subgroups’ analyses for the HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative groups. Results Results showed that the ALT, ALB and HBeAg are independent factors to estimate the serum HBV DNA in CHB patients. But diagnosing the high levels of HBV DNA is not credible (the AUC=0.622, Fig1-A). In HBeAg-positive group, when the level of HBeAg is higher than 16.15 S/CO, we can predict the patient with high levels of HBV DNA (> 2000 IU/ml, AUC=0.787, Fig1-C) and the patients were 4 folds to have the high levels of HBV DNA than the HBeAg-negativ (table3). The levels of ALT and TB are the independent risk factors for the patients in HBeAg-negative group. When the levels of ALT and TB are higher 36.5 IU/L and 11.15 umol/L,respectively, the patient would have a high levels of HBV DNA (> 2000 IU/ml, AUC=0.609, Fig2-B). Conclusion HBeAg is an independent factor that reflects the levels of serum HBV DNA with a strong correlation, but it is not accurate to evaluate the levels of serum HBV DNA by the HBeAg-positive. On the other hand, the patients with HBeAg-negative are not mean having a low levels of HBV DNA, which can be evaluated by the levels of ALT and TB.

There is an ongoing debate on the definition of euthanasia and attempts to change laws about euthanasia and its practice in many countries. It is the medical doctors and the other health professionals who will elucidate the issue. Therefore, we performed this study to reveal attitude of Turkish health professionals toward euthanasia. This is an observational and cross-sectional study and data were collected with a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 545 health professionals in Samsun, a city in the Black Sea Region in Turkey. Data were analyzed with SPSS package programs. Of all health professionals included in the study, 43.5% were medical doctors and 45.5% auxiliary health professionals. Of all participants, 33.6% did not object to euthanasia and 7.9% were asked to perform euthanasia. Eighty point seven percent of the participants noted that euthanasia could be abused even if a euthanasia law were passed. It can be concluded that the health professionals should have a chance to discuss euthanasia and that their attitude toward and their expectations and worries about euthanasia should be taken into account when a euthanasia law is drafted.

Candida spp., are saprophytic yeasts capable of creating a favorable environment for bacterial infection, amplifying or inhibiting their activity. On the other hand, bacteria produce molecules that reduce the proliferation of Candida spp or promote their adherence to surfaces. The resurgence of typhoid and paratyphoid fevers in endemic individuals and the relative effectiveness of contemporary conventional therapies arouse curiosity to explore other factors that may influence, the re-emergence of infection in patients. We carried out a cross-sectional study of 2500 patients in four hospitals in the city of Douala, Cameroon, from January to December 2019, to determine the influence of Candida spp., on the onset of these infections in patients. Widal and Felix test was used to form the sample, culture on specific media and microscopy confirmed the identity of Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi and Candida spp. Biochemical tests on a classic tube gallery revealed the biochemical characteristics of bacteria. The results showed that infection with S. typhi is predominant, 32.76 % versus 18.4 % of S. paratyphi infection. Infection with Candida spp., would increase 4-5 times the frequency of infection with S. typhi and S. paratyphi, respectively from 3.08 % to 26.03 %, and from 7.08 % to 32.76 %. The presence of Candida spp increases the risk of reoccurrence of S. typhi and S. paratyphi in patients.

Abstract Background The presence of maternal emotions towards the offspring resulting from assisted reproductive techniques (ART) has been previously reported in oocyte donors. However, there is limited information about the presence of these emotions in oocyte donors during the ART process and before pregnancy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the emotions of oocyte donor women towards the potential genetic offspring and to compare them with women treated with ART by using own oocytes. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 women who were divided into two groups of oocyte donors and those treated with ART and using autologous oocyte. At the time of oocyte retrieval. Using a validated questionnaire, the emotions toward potential offspring (EPO) resulting from ART and its three dimensions (including imagination, sense of ownership, and importance of treatment outcome) were measured and compared in two groups. Results Comparison of the EPO in the two groups showed that the emotions in all three dimensions were lower in oocyte donors than the other group (p < 0.001). Moreover, in oocyte donors, the mean score of the scale of the importance of treatment outcome dimension was higher than the other two scales (p < 0.001). Conclusion The results of the study showed that there is a significant emotion toward the potential offspring in oocyte donors. The presence of these emotions thus should be considered in formulating the ethical charter of ART by using oocyte donation.

Air pollution cannot be avoided by people especially those living in big cities. Rubber factories and landfill sites are two examples of activities that can trigger air pollution. H2S gas produced from rubber factories and landfill sites can create unpleasant smells and air contamination and increase free radicals in environment. This study was to assess the level of oxidative stress in people living near rubber factories and landfill sites. This was cross-sectional study involving 60 people as the study sample. The level of H2S gas was measured to determine the presence of air pollution. Blood collected from vena mediana cubiti was drawn to determine the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker of oxidative stress. Data obtained from this study were analyzed using independent t-test. The levels of H2S gas from landfill site were higher than those from rubber factory (0.482 ppm vs. 0.332 ppm). On the other hand, the average level of MDA in people living near the rubber factory was higher than that living near the landfill site (0.847 ± 0.269 nmol/mL vs 0.748 ± 0.253 nmol/mL). It was found no significant difference (p <0.05) in the average levels of MDA between people living near the rubber factory and those living near the landfill site. There was no significant difference in the average levels of oxidative stress between people living near rubber factory and those living near landfill site.
