Confucius Institutes (kongzi xueyuan) are prescribed by Confucius Headquarters in Beijing a cultural educational identity and the prescription implies that the identity construction may resort mainly to the culture- and education-related discourse, avoiding any use of the economy-relevant discourse. This paper uses Fairclough’s interactive perspective toward the relationship between discourse and society, his three-dimensional conception of discourse and the correspondent three-dimensional method of discourse analysis to carry out a detailed analysis of the discourse relevant to Confucius Institutes. The results show that the discourse is overloaded with the marketized languages; it is the final product of the struggle between Confucius Headquarters’ initial drive to build up a cultural educational identity for the new institutes and the prevalent marketization trend in the global context. Further discussion reveals that the discourse seduces people to discuss the organization not from the perspective of cultural exchange or educational cooperation but from the perspective of commodification and, more seriously, ruins the initial drive of the Headquarters to construct it a cultural educational identity and betrays the underlying political motive of the construction; the research instantiates again Fairclough’s observation that any discourse (practice) in the educational field nowadays can not be fully immune from the invasion of the marketized discourse; it also proves that Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of discourse analysis is effective in uncovering the commodified languages embedded in the discourse of various kinds.

This research describes the advertisement of Sasa Gourmet Powder which clarify issues that develop in Indonesian society about the use of MSG that is harmful for health. The source data used in this research is a “Sasa Gourmet Powder Advertisement #NikmatiHidupSepenuhnya (2021)” which has 29 seconds in long. The advertisement selected is available on Youtube. The aims of this research to reveal the purpose about why this advertisement is made and the social conditions underlying the making of the advertisement. This research applies descriptive qualitative method, which describes and explains the social world phenomenon or events. One of types in qualitative research is text analysis. This research utilizes text analysis in Sasa Gourmet Powder using Discourse analysis approach. The theory that used in this research is about Three-Dimensional Approach by Fairclough (1995). This theory explain about the relationship exists between social structures and discourse, because discourse influences social conventions, while social structures influence discourse. It focuses on analysis of language text, discourse practice (texts production and interpretations of text), and sociocultural practice. This research found that Sasa Gourmet Powder advertisements are designed to bring a new packaging from the company and to clarify its problems about MSG that have spread in society. With this advertisement, Sasa wants to show the fact that the MSG product does not cause stupidity. Sasa explained that its MSG products are safe to consume provided the limits of use are appropriate. <em>This paper investigates the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in studying the inauguration speech of Donald Trump at the Capitol Hill, Washington DC on January 20, 2017. The objective of the study is to uncover the hidden messages regarding ideologies shared and critiques appointed to Obama’s presidency. The paper uses the theory of CDA by Norman Fairclough by focusing on the three aspects of research which are (1) micro or linguistic analysis, (2) Mezzo or discursive analysis, and (3) macro or contextual analysis. The three dimensional model of CDA is aimed to uncover the ideologies shared and critiques appointed to based on linguistic features, socio-political aspect, and discursive practice. The American Dream is represented in seven issues risen which are (1) US economic condition during Obama’s presidency, (2) US political condition during Obama’s presidency, (3) US social condition during Obama’s presidency, (4) The concept of making America great again, (5) Anti-radical Muslim immigrants, (6) America First, and (7) Nationalism. The result of the study reveals that the speech brought some ideologies or thoughts shared to the audiences and might change the people’s perception on Obama’s two periods of presidency who is considered as failure.</em>

Linguistically, the word ‘language’ has shifted into ‘discourse’ which is a social phenomenon not only to express the thoughts but also to reflect the mindset and contexts of a specific community. The purpose of this study is to examine the slogans written on Pakistani automobiles and to understand the logic behind the social and cultural affiliations of these slogans. Pakistani culture of the art of making pictures and written phrases, poetic verses and imperative sentences on vehicles is famous all over the world. The study has analysed the writings found on vehicles, and although these writings might look trivial on the automobiles, they address various social issues. The Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (2001) is used as a theoretical framework that explains the study at three levels: lexical, syntactic patterns, interpretations, and social practices. The discourses written on the vehicles are characterised into different categories, which are life’s mission statements, loud messages, mind baffling messages, everyday life annoyances, provoking statements, and religious looms. Twenty images and pictures have been captured from vehicles as a random sample of this study. The results reveal the mindset behind these discourses. They are used to highlight social issues which Pakistan faces, being a developing country. In short, the study discloses the strong link between the vehicles and the people using them to convey messages to the society which can bring harmony among the public. The current study is limited to only Pakistani motor vehicles.

To evaluate the ability of woven fabrics to drape in a more accurate way, a three-dimensional point cloud of a draped woven fabric was captured via an in-house drape-scanner. A new indicator, total drape angle (TDA), was proposed based on the three-dimensional fabric drape to characterize the ability of a woven fabric to drape. The relationship between TDA and the drape coefficient (DC) was analyzed to validate the performance of TDA. The result indicated that TDA is more stable and representative than the traditional DC in characterizing the ability of a woven fabric to drape. In addition, the drape angle distribution function (DADF) of the triangular mesh was employed to describe fabric drape, as well as to bridge the gap between drape configuration and the warp bending rigidity of woven fabric. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between the real warp bending rigidity value and what was predicted warp based on DADF and fabric weight was 0.952.

The Sebago pluton is a two-mica granite that intruded the metasedimentary rocks of the Central Maine Terrane around 292 Ma. In recent years, geologists have raised an increasing number of questions related to the overall thickness of the Sebago pluton and the position of its subsurface contact with the underlying metasedimentary rocks. Past studies have shown the Sebago pluton to be a thin, 1-2 km thick, subhorizontal sheet dipping 3° to the northeast. This study examines anomalies in the Earth's gravitational field related to the southern portion of the Sebago pluton, specifically to determine the thickness of the pluton and to locate the subsurface contact between the pluton and the underlying metasedimentary rocks. A three-dimensional model shows the thickest portions of the pluton (~1.8 km) to occur at the bottom of a bowl hape along the southwestern contact. Moreover, the model shows the pluton to thin toward the northern and eastern regions of the study area, where the average thickness is less than 0.5 km. The pluton appears to extend southward below the cover of the metasedimentary rocks along the southwestern contact. Thus, contrary to previous models, the Sebago pluton is not a northeasterly dipping sheet of uniform thickness, but rather an arched sheet with an irregular thickness extending beneath the metasedimentary rocks along both its northern and southern contacts. Based on this new geometry, either the relationship of the pluton to the surrounding metamorphic zones must be modified, or the possibility must be considered that the Sebago pluton is actually a composite batholith, composed of a younger (Permian) granite to the north and an older (Carboniferous) granite to the south.

The purpose of this study was to test the relationship between sport service quality and sport involvement. The data were collected from 500 individuals, users of sport facilities, in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. Items from the SERVQUAL model were used to measure sport service quality. The three-dimensional model of leisure involvement was used to measure sport involvement (Centrality, Attraction and Self-expression). The results of the study revealed statistically signicant correlations between service quality and two of the three dimensions of sport involvement: centrality and self-expression, supporting the important role of service quality in developing sport policy. These results propose that policy makers should invest on building service quality in sport services and facilities, since this will increase sport participation levels and help citizens adopt a more active life-style.

Referring to politicians’ use of language to promote their ideologies before, during and after elections, campaign speeches represent a key genre in political discourse. In this study, we examine the campaign speech of a Ghanaian opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo, at the manifesto launch of his party. We analyze his use of language to create identity and solidarity with the electorate, with the aim of persuading them to accept and support his ideas and ultimately vote for him. Drawing on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis (CDA), the study revealed that Nana Addo utilised the pronouns I, you, our and we and repetition to create a positive bond, identify and show solidarity with the electorate. Also, these strategies were aimed at persuading voters to endorse him as the most credible candidate for the position of president. This study contributes to CDA research on the nexus between language, politics and society.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the power of one of the primary organizational stakeholders (shareholders) in the development of a corporate social performance (CSP) score. Few research works in the CSP empirical literature have studied the relationship between stakeholder power and CSP. Design/methodology/approach – Stakeholder theory is used as a theoretical framework to explain how shareholder voting power can influence the CSP level of French publicly listed companies. Stakeholder theory is tested through the operationalization of Ullmann’s (1985) three-dimensional model. Hypotheses related to shareholder voting power, strategic posture and financial performance are formulated through a literature review. A Data Envelopment Analysis approach was presented as a strong tool to measure CSP level. Multiple linear regressions were undertaken to test the hypotheses in a sample of 129 French companies between 2006 and 2007. Findings – The results indicate that companies with dispersed ownership and high proportion of institutional shareholders record a high score of CSP. Strategic posture measured by the implementation of environmental certification standard was positively and significantly related to CSP. Financial performance does not affect significantly the level of CSP. Originality/value – This paper is the first to empirically analyse the relationship between Ullmann’s three-dimensional model and CSP level in the French context. It offers to managers a better understanding of the power that certain stakeholders can use to acquire satisfaction.


In view of the practical significance in dynamical meteorology of the problem of evaporation from areas of finite lateral extent, it is a matter of fundamental importance to test as fully as possible the applicability of the hypothetical three-dimensional model of turbulence which was introduced by the author in 1947. The present paper describes in detail the manner in which the two-dimensional system developed by O. G. Sutton, K. L. Calder and E. L. Deacon for flow over aerodynamically smooth and rough surfaces may be extended to three-dimensional diffusion of vapour over an evaporating area. The agreement obtained between theory and experiment is good at points over the area. This agreement indicates that the assumed law, introduced by the author to give the variation of the coefficient of lateral diffusivity with height above the surface, may be used satisfactorily in evaporation problems as long as attention is confined to points not too far outside the boundaries of the area. The complicated mathematical relationship previously obtained for the vapour distribution vertically above the down-wind edge of a parabolic strip is reduced to a much simpler one. This serves to bring out explicitly the relationship between the effects of the two- and three-dimensional theoretical systems of turbulent transfer at points on the central axis of the area.
