In this paper I present a work in progress concerning the mimesis of Italian speech, which is possible to study not only into the two traditional forms of language — written and spoken — but also in broadcast language of tv series. In order to find examples of mimesis of spoken language which are as close as possible to the contemporary linguistic reality, I have excluded all specialised TV programmes which cater for specific contents and sectorial registers and I concentrate on television stories of TV fiction.  Tv fiction can be divided up into various narrative formulae and, depending on the subject matter, in different macrocategories. I have focused my study on a particular kind of fiction based on realistic serial format: family fiction, which narrates the daily life of a family or group of families whose stories become entwined in a succession of petty or major events where the language must necessarily draw on colloquial Italian.  The corpus analysed in this first phase of the research project was taken from two series: La famiglia Benvenuti (1968) and Un medico in famiglia (1998). I have selected a shortlist of phenomena which best match up to the characteristics of spontaneous speech, grouped in four areas of analysis: 1: Register and lexical–grammatical phenomena; 2: Linguistic commonplaces; 3: The polyvalent ‘che’; 4: Mechanisms of segmentation and focalisation.

Is an institution the same as an organisation? Why do organisations organise themselves into institutional forms? What makes some institutions more successful than others? How do we define and assess ‘success’? Does institutionalisation require formalisation? How do we go about building and developing institutions? These are some of the questions that are the subject matter of the book under review. It was a research project undertaken by a Bangalore-based management research and consultancy centre from 1997 to 1999 that provided the necessary impetus and focus for institutional development in the special context of development interventions. This book is in the nature of a presentation of a work-in-progress and not merely a report of a research project.

Food processing industry (FPI) is at a nascent stage and is tagged as a sunshine industry. The efficiency and productivity of the inputs for the aforesaid industries have to be measured to not only find out if the potential is achieved or not, but also to identify the grey areas. Against such a backdrop, it is obvious that industries like FPI would grow and become the subject matter for further investigation. The research revealed that the majority of cases have been consistent with the real facts and the underlying principles, and the structure of the economy provide valid reasons for it. However, in some cases, the results have not been consistent with the movement of the economy and there are no valid economic reasons for the performance of the state.

The algorithm presented in this paper provides the means for the real-time recognition of the key signature associated with a given piece of music, based on the analysis of a very small number of initial notes. The algorithm can easily be implemented in electronic musical instruments, enabling real-time generation of musical notation. The essence of the solution proposed herein boils down to the analysis of a music signature, defined as a set of twelve vectors representing the particular pitch classes. These vectors are anchored in the center of the circle of fifths, pointing radially towards each of the twelve tones of the chromatic scale. Besides a thorough description of the algorithm, the authors also present a theoretical introduction to the subject matter. The results of the experiments performed on preludes and fugues by J.S. Bach, as well as the preludes, nocturnes, and etudes of F. Chopin, validating the usability of the method, are also presented and thoroughly discussed. Additionally, the paper includes a comparison of the efficacies obtained using the developed solution with the efficacies observed in the case of music notation generated by a musical instrument of a reputable brand, which clearly indicates the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Research has shown that using debate in higher education as a pedagogical tool has effect on promoting higher order and critical thinking (Camp & Schnader, 2010; Ng et al., 2004; Roy & Macchiette, 2005; Ryan & College, 2006). Debate has been implemented in various disciplines with adult learners, such as psychology (Budesheim & Lundquist, 1999), medicine (Koklanaris, Mackenzie, Fino, Arsland, & Seubert, 2008 ), political science (Omelicheva, 2005), marketing (Roy & Macchiette, 2005), accounting (Camp & Schnader, 2010), science & technology (Scott, 2008). Based on the previous studies, students viewed the use of debate as a new and innovative way to teaching and learning, while being more informative, and eye-opening (Kennedy, 2009; Munakata, 2010). The non-traditional method of teaching also increased students motivation and interest level (Munakata, 2010) as it gave a real sense of drama (Roy & Macchiette, 2005, p. 271). However, in teacher preparation, the implementation of debate as a pedagogical tool to promote learning as well as the research on this topic is relatively limited (Erduran, Ardac, & Yakmaci-Guzel, 2006; Ng, Lan, & They, 2004; Munakata, 2010; Sadler, 2006).  This study aims to implement debate as pedagogical tool to enhance pres-service teachers learning on the subject matter and investigate the effect of using debate in teacher training in Singapore context. The following research questions were posed in the study: (1) whether debate stimulated students thinking on the subject matter more than textbook readings and lectures (traditional teacher-directed methods), (2) to which extent students found debate helpful to their learning on the subject matter, (3) to which extent debate helped students to make connections between the subject matter and the real life, and (4) what was the qualitative feedback from students in their learning through the debate activity. Fifty-six pre-service teachers participated in a course evaluation survey to provide feedback on their learning. The results have shown that 83.9% of teachers agree that debate stimulated their thinking more than textbook readings and lectures, while 14.3% of teachers felt neutral, and 1.8% of teachers strongly disagree. Eighty two percent of teachers found debate very helpful to their learning while 16.1% felt neutral. In addition, 80.4% of teachers agree that debate helps them to make connections between the subject matter and the real life experiences while 17.9% of teachers felt neutral. Several observations emerged from students qualitative feedback on using debate in learning. Students expressed that the debate activity helped them to expand the understanding of the subject matter, retention of crucial concepts and knowledge, and comprehension of essential issues on the subject matter. Students felt debate helped them to understand different perspectives, and reduce bias. Some students reported change of their positions and perspectives after the debate. More importantly, many students stated that debate helped them develop critical thinking and higher order thinking skills in comparison to traditional methods.

This article presents the results of a research project that seeks to describe and analyze the curricular policies of reform in the daily life of schools, paying particular attention here to the processes of regulation and self-regulation that they produce and impose on their subjects. From the Foucauldian notion of governmentality we understand that curriculum policies and regulations, technologies, and behaviors produce performative effects (Ball, 2002, 2012), which affect not only the life of the institutions but also of the subject (Ahmed, 2004, Berlant, 2011). Thus, the question that orientates this article is woven around the articulation of the government of others and self-government (Foucault, 1988, 2009) as a key mode of school reform technologies and the modes of social affectation. The processes of reform cross subjects through performative technologies (Ball, 2002) and constitute a part of what Rose (2012) called the ethopolytic, that is, these processes act at the level of feelings and beliefs, and put the self in check. As a hypothesis, it is argued that judgment, self-reflection and self-responsibility are attached to questions that teachers ask themselves in the call to become better than they are.

This paper discusses findings of a study conducted on Australian Sign Language (Auslan)/English interpreters in a university lecture, with consideration given to factors that influenced the interpreters’ omissions. The hypothesis of the study was that interpreters would make recourse to omissions both consciously and unconsciously, depending on their familiarity with the discourse environment and the subject matter. Through exploration of theoretical perspectives of interpreting and discourse studies, it is argued that interpreters use omissions as linguistic strategies for coping with the discourse environment. The findings of the study present interpreters with a new perspective on omissions in interpreting, which can be applied to both signed- and spoken-language interpreting.

Creativity is an important role in the education of Fashion Education because only creative individuals can produce creative ideas and products. The Fashion Education has to perform its function for the formation of character, work culture, personality, skill, knowledge, behavior and various life skill according to the demands of work world. Fashion Education is still not maximized in developing the creativity of students, especially the ability to think creatively in solving the problems of daily life that it faces. For that required the creativity of educators to foster student creativity. Student creativity will emerge, if the teacher as a pilot in the classroom also has adequate creativity. The subject matter that has been prepared in the syllabus, should be well developed to achieve the predetermined educational objectives. The development of creativity can be done with brainstorming learning, giving motivation, bringing creative people to school and not limit the student excessively by directing students to express and actualize themselves in relation to oneself, to nature, and to others.
