This article proposes a reading of classical works of Emile Durkheim, one of the founding fathers of sociology, in light of their applicability to translation research. It is argued that, since translation is a social phenomenon, Durkheimian sociological thought may be of considerable help to Translation Studies (TS). The sociology of translation should be methodologically distinguished from the psychology of translation. In the sociology of translation, even studies of individual translations and translators should be conducted within a social context. In accordance with Durkheimian theory, it is argued that methodology for a sociologically-informed study of translation should avoid relying on common sense, which more often than not turns out to hamper, rather than help, the perception of translation as a social phenomenon. In other words, translation is presented as a social fact and the need to study it as such is strongly emphasized. Examples are borrowed from present-day translation research.

Recent decades have seen a focus on the translator as a socialised individual as one approach favoured in Translation Studies. Scholars have employed sociological concepts such as habitus (socio-cultural conditioning) and field (environment) as methodological tools in empirical translation research, yielding new and interesting perspectives on the process of translation. In the field of Qur'an hermeneutics, however, such methodological tools have not been applied systematically. The present article constitutes an initial attempt to address this omission, by delineating Muhammad Asad's habitus against the backdrop of his socio-political, cultural, and intellectual background in order to explore the significance of its impact on his The Message of the Qur'an. It will contextualise Asad's rendition of the Qur'an into English through comparative critical intertextual and paratextual analysis, thereby introducing the ‘realm of sociology of translation’, a Translation Studies perspective, into Qur'anic studies.

This article argues for a non-reductive approach to translation as a basic social process that shapes both the world that sociologists study and the sociological endeavour itself. It starts by referring to accounts from the sociology of translation and translation studies, which have problematized simplistic views of processes of cultural globalization. From this point of view, translation can offer an approach to contemporary interconnectedness that escapes from both methodological nationalism and what can be designated as the monolingual vision, providing substantive perspectives on the proliferation of contact zones or borderlands in a diversity of domains. The article centrally argues for a sociological perspective that examines not just the circulation of meaning but translation as a process of linguistic transformation that is necessarily embodied in words. Only if this more material aspect of translation is attended to can the nature of translation as an ordinary social process be fully grasped and its intervention in meaning-making activities explored. This has far-ranging implications for any reflexive account of the production of sociological works and interpretations.

Why did the subject of law play a central role in sociology as it emerged? And why is this no longer the case today? This study explains this transformation of the sociological interest in law by means of a genealogical investigation into the mutual references between the jurisprudence of private law and sociology: the way in which, from a legal perspective starting in the 19th century, law has been addressed as a social phenomenon in the face of concrete problems is reflected in the early sociologies of Émile Durkheim, Ferdinand Tönnies and Max Weber. This has led to a mutual demarcation, which places law and sociology in a problematic relationship to each other for the future.

Having presented directions of development in Translation Studies, based on themes of subsequent European Society for Translation Studies Congresses; as well as the chronology of changes and turns in translation research, the author presents the Action Research in Translation Studies (ARTS) model, which combines functionalist theories in TS with translation practice. ARTS aims at using theoretical cogitation in TS in order to introduce specific translation activities. The application of the ARTS model is illustrated here by the analysis of the Katzenjammer Kids translation unit. The conclusions regard the translator’s decision process and the influence of cultural conditioning on the creation of meaning in translation.

The article considers the language in use, in the process of interaction and as a sign system used in the process of communication, describes the functions of the language. The language is a system of discrete signs that serve to communicate and express the totality of person's ideas of the surrounding reality, and it is a social phenomenon. The basic functions of a language are interdependent when using the language and are implemented in various degrees. Researchers identify different functions of the language; many classifications depend on its ways of use. Social stipulation of the language is manifested in the expansion of the scope of the functions, the diversity of its forms, functional styles.

Este estudo é um compilado de informações, que possibilitam ao leitor ter uma breve compreensão do Sistema de Garantia de Direitos, dando destaque ao atendimento prestado aos adolescentes e ou jovens, que foram expostos a riscos ou vulnerabilidades sociais, especificamente, os casos em que esses se encontram envolvidos com o meio ilícito ou prática de ato infracional. Desta forma, pesquisar sobre o referido tema que é de conhecimento social, sem dúvida alguma, gera diversos avanços para o meio acadêmico, bem como promove a disseminação de conhecimento, corroborando assim com a desmistificação que percorre pelo senso comum, quando o assunto é adolescente em conflito com a lei. Concernente ao método, foi utilizada a revisão bibliográfica integrativa, por meio da análise e compilação dos artigos publicizados nas bases de dados indexadoras, especificamente, Lilacs, PePSIC, BVS, Medline Bireme e Scielo, facilitando a obtenção de dados que após analisados, certamente, podem servir de ferramenta para que os leitores entrem em contato com esse contexto social, que tanto tem sido destaque na mídia, além de contribuir para o aprimoramento do atendimento e da política pública designada para tal segmento.Palavras-chave: Ato Infracional. Medida Socioeducativa.AbstractThis present study is compiled from information that enables the reader to have a brief understanding of the Rights Guarantee System, highlighting the care provided to adolescents and, or young people who were exposed to risks, or social vulnerabilities, specifically, cases that are involved with illicit means and, or practice of an infraction. Thus, research on that topic that is of social knowledge undoubtedly generates several advances to the academia and promotes the knowledge disseminatio, thus corroborating to the demystification that runs by common sense when it comes to adolescent offender. Concerning the method, the integrative literature review was used, through the analysis and compilation of the publicized articles in indexing databases, making it easier to obtain data after analysis which can certainly serve as a tool for readers to contact this social context that both have been featured in the media, as well as contribute to the improvement of care and public policy assigned to this segment.Keywords: Infraction. The article discusses the influence of Russian-English functional bilingualism of IT and tech specialists on the formation of translation norms in the corresponding field. The research is carried out within the framework of sociology of translation and descriptive approach in translation studies. It investigates the patterns in the usage of hybrid lexemes combining Russian and English graphemes, e.g. IoT-устройство (IoT-device), API-интерфейс (API-interface) and Open Source-приложение (open source application) in translations. Methodologically, the study resorts to the theoretical stance of sociology of translation, namely the concepts of translation norm, represented in the works by G. Toury and A. Chesterman, translator's habitus and the field of translation, as well as corpus-based methodology. It utilizes a comparable corpus of translated and non-translated articles published by Russian IT business magazines itWeek, Computerworld and Novosti Elektroniki (Electronics News) in 2017. Hybrids are shown to be more common in non-translated text, which can be viewed as an aspect of the expectancy norm. Qualitative study revealed the following patterns in hybrid usage in translation. Most of the hybrids used in translation are the direct result of the transfer of original English analytical structures. Hybrids are also used in translation as part of pragmatic positive interference, which shows the translator's reliance on the recipient's extensive background knowledge of the subject, as well as command of the English language. Interference, both positive and negative, is argued to be the aspect of the expectancy norm present in the field of technology-oriented media translation.

“How could she ever put those terrible pictures into words?” (Naidoo, Truth 51). This question is at the heart of Beverley Naidoo’s The Other Side of Truth (2000), which narrates the trauma of Nigerian asylum seeker children Sade and Femi as they flee to Britain. Speech and silence are ambivalent within the text, fluctuating in meaning dependant on the social context in which they are enacted. Showing this text to be primarily a narrative of activism, I explore how Naidoo’s representations of trauma inform her critique of the British immigration system. This text invites a reading that draws on recent postcolonial theories of trauma. Using both textual and paratextual analysis of the novel and Naidoo’s archive, held by Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children’s Books in Britain, I draw on Forter’s model of psychosocial trauma to demonstrate that the trauma the protagonists face is a result of their encounter with a racist society and bureaucracy. Reflecting Kertzer’s claim that social justice should be central in trauma narratives for children, Naidoo shows healing from trauma to be the locus of political awakening for both characters and implied reader. The aim of this article is to integrate contemporary models of postcolonial trauma with an understanding of the activist nature of Naidoo’s work, showing that in this sort of children’s trauma narrative, the site of healing from trauma is simultaneously the site of social change. Since the trauma that the child protagonists face is a social phenomenon, the speech that allows the children to begin to heal is similarly socially situated, and their healing is synonymous with social justice.

Abstract:The issue of diversity in religion is a social fact that has continued to experience conflict shocks lately. Not without reason, the conflict occurred on the grounds of sentiment towards other religions. This has an impact on the disruption of the stability of relations between religious groups. The discourse of religious pluralism is an alternative in overcoming this problem. Grounding religious pluralism is the right effort by not injuring religious values. Islam actually provides a clear explanation in the Koran about building a tolerant relationship in religion. This article will explain and provide an explanation of Islamic values in the Qur'an as an effort to develop religious pluralism that needs to be represented in a plural social context. It is hoped that with this, the harmony between religious people will be realized. Besides that, as a concrete follow-up, an education process is needed about the importance of tolerance in religion.Keywords: Qur'an, Tolerance, Religious Pluralism, Harmony AbstrakIsu keberagaman dalam beragama menjadi fakta sosial yang terus mengalami guncangan konflik belakangan ini. Wacana pluralisme agama menjadi alternatif dalam mengatasi masalah tersebut. Membumikan pluralisme agama merupakan upaya yang tepat dengan tidak menciderai nilai-nilai agama. Islam sejatinya hadir memberikan penjelasan yang gamblang didalam Alquran tentang membangun hubungan yang toleran dalam beragama. Tulisan ini akan memaparkan sekaligus memberikan penjelasan nilai-nilai keislaman yang ada dalam Alquran sebagai upaya mengembangkan pluralisme agama yang perlu direpresentasikan dalam konteks sosial yang plural. Diharapkan dengannya, akan terwujud kerukunan antar umat beragama.Selain itu, sebagai tindak lanjut yang konkrit dibutuhkan proses edukasi tentang pentingnya toleransi dalam beragama.  Kata Kunci: Alquran, Toleransi, Pluralisme Agama, Kerukunan
