Abstract Classroom assessment techniques (CATs) may be valuable for engaging students in the learning process, monitoring students’ learning, and establishing a communication feedback loop. However, CATs have not been evaluated in Animal Science classes. Our objective was to test if CATs affected final exam grades and students’ perception of learning among Animal Science students. Our sample consisted of students (n = 95) enrolled in four laboratory sections (n = 24 per lab section) of an Introduction to Animal Science course at South Dakota State University. Two sections were randomly selected to complete CATs at the conclusion of each laboratory period. Assessments forms encouraged students to reflect, seek clarification, and evaluate their confidence on that day’s material. A rubric was used to evaluate quality of the assessment responses throughout the semester. Feedback was provided at the beginning of the next week’s laboratory period to clarify material that students had expressed difficulty understanding. Final exam grades were compared between assessment and control groups using a Students t-test. Data were collected on student perception of classroom engagement, communication, and learning abilities through a Likert scale survey administered at the end of the semester. Surveys administered to students that participated in the CAT included additional questions to evaluate assessment effectiveness. Survey data was analyzed using a chi-squared test to evaluate differences between lab sections for general questions and within lab sections for assessment-specific questions. No differences (P > 0.05) between groups were observed for final exam grades. Students that participated in the CAT perceived that the CAT positively impacted their ability to learn, provided guidance for study material, and was an effective use of classroom time (P < 0.05). The CAT was viewed favorably by students who participated in the assessment activity, although participation in the CAT was not associated with increased final exam scores.

Objectives: To find out the students perception on using multiple choice questions as a classroom assessment technique. Study Design: Cross sectional Study. Setting: University of Hail, Saudi Arabia. Period: 6 months from January 2018 to June 2018. Material & Methods: At the end of each scheduled class, students are provided with four MCQ's on the same topic which was delivered in the lecture and 3 minutes were given to solve the MCQ’s. Data was collected from 4th and 6th year MBBS students. A self-structured questionnaire regarding class assessment techniques was also administered, after completion of Surgery and Clinical Skill module. Results: Out of 80 MBBS students, 50% were selected from 4th year and 6th year respectively. Response of most of the students were positive 59 (73.8%) in classroom assessment techniques effects on student discipline. Majority of the student’s 70 (87.5%) respond positive effects on student’s interest to subject and 64 (80%) reported positive effects on student’s assessment. Suggestion about participating classroom assessment technique were found to be positive in 61 (76.2%). Data was analysed by using SPSS version 20.  Conclusion: Student’s perception on using multiple choice questions as a classroom assessment technique was found to be more positive.

This paper explores the comparative analysis of the financial controlling, who is a result from the common controlling concept and the financial management. In the specialized literature, financial controlling is seen as an innovative approach to financial management. It is often presented as the most promising instrument of financial diagnostics. Generally speaking, financial controlling is seen as a process of managing the company`s assets which are valued in monetary measures. The difference between the financial management and the financial controlling is that the second covers all functions of management, analysis and control of finances, aiming at maximizing their effective use and increasing the value of the enterprise. Financial controlling is often seen as a function of the common practice of financial management. Its objective is to preserve the financial stability and financial sustainability of enterprises operating in a highly aggressive business environment.

Summary Validation of phenotyping models using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) data conventionally requires gold-standard case and control labels. The labeling process requires clinical experts to retrospectively review patients’ medical charts, therefore is labor intensive and time consuming. For some disease conditions, it is prohibitive to identify the gold-standard controls because routine clinical assessments are performed for selective patients who are deemed to possibly have the condition. To build a model for phenotyping patients in EHRs, the most readily accessible data are often for a cohort consisting of a set of gold-standard cases and a large number of unlabeled patients. Hereby, we propose methods for assessing model calibration and discrimination using such “positive-only” EHR data that does not require gold-standard controls, provided that the labeled cases are representative of all cases. For model calibration, we propose a novel statistic that aggregates differences between model-free and model-based estimated numbers of cases across risk subgroups, which asymptotically follows a Chi-squared distribution. We additionally demonstrate that the calibration slope can also be estimated using such “positive-only” data. We propose consistent estimators for discrimination measures and derive their large sample properties. We demonstrate performances of the proposed methods through extensive simulation studies and apply them to Penn Medicine EHRs to validate two preliminary models for predicting the risk of primary aldosteronism.

This study investigates the poor claims settlement and demand for insurance policies in Nigeria to provide empirical evidence which would assist not only the insurance companies but also the policymakers by using these findings to design future insurance services and policies that can be geared towards promoting insurance market development. The population focused in the study included few licensed insurance firms in Nigeria. This is due to the fact that they dominate and control the larger interest in the market share. Primary data was used for this study through well-structured questionnaire. Chi- squared statistics and correlation with the tabulated contingency table on the basis of an assumptions were employed. The results show that poor claim settlement has significant effect on demand for Insurance policies in Nigeria and that there is long term and significant relationship between poor claim settlement and demand for insurance policies in Nigeria. The study therefore, recommends that insurance industry should be redefined through appropriate Acts, introducing competitions and innovations in the services so as to compete effectively and meet consumer needs by dealing with changing expectations of policyholders so as to ensure that satisfaction of all the parties are guaranteed.

This study aims to investigate the possible effects of peripheral learning on elementary EFL learners’ grammar improvement: the case of prepositions of time and place. Two elementary classes were selected as experimental and control groups. Before beginning the treatment, a grammar test was administered to both the groups as a pre-test. Then, as treatment, the experimental group was exposed to realia, pictures, posters and texts, while the control group was not. After term-long treatment of 10 weeks, the two groups received the same grammar test as post-test. The results of t-test showed that the experimental group improved their grammar ability, i.e., knowledge of prepositions of time and place more than their friends in the control group. The finding of the study may open an optional path for teachers to include some peripheral materials in their teaching environment to further invest on unconscious learning abilities of the students.   Keywords: Peripheral learning, reposition of time, prepositions of place, grammar.
