Journalism practices in Protector countries are deeply rooted in the once largely homogenous cultures from which they developed and remain a part. Globalization, most intensely focused on crime and immigration and the tell-all reporting style popular on the Internet and social media platforms, threatens the embedded sense of who a people are, how they treat one another, and how they ought to address the challenges of difference. This chapter considers how immigrants have been framed as threat across these nations. The varying responses are examined from news outlets, as well as press councils, about how best to advance these public conversations, which details ought to be included and why. Crimes stories reflect a faith in the government, the courts, and the penal system.

The internet and social media is bringing the world closer. It keeps us connected as it is not possible for people to carry any social visits personally due to their hectic schedule. However trolling is a menace in the age of internet and social media. Some people with malicious intentions tend to misuse the social media platforms and thereby cause trouble to other innocent users. Therefore a person who opens an account on social media shall behave in a civilized way and use the social media in decent way so that there is no trouble caused to other social media users.

The internet has opened up new possibilities for scholars to gather data and, in general, to stay updated on rapidly changing developments in the Chinese society. Social media has added yet another dimension as it enables researchers to follow events and public debates as they unfold as well as facilitate engagement and interactivity with informants and other contacts. This article is based on the author’s own experiences and discusses the possibilities and challenges of using Chinese social media platforms. It calls for an explicit reflexivity on rapidly changing technologies. The article also addresses the fact that the researcher leaves many digital footprints on the internet and social media, and the advantages and possible dangers in an authoritarian society such as China. The article is written as a reflection piece and a call for more open and systematic discussions on how digital technologies change research practices in and on China.

The chapter seeks to examine how IT enables or constrains counterfeiting and piracy in the fashion and beauty industry in two developing countries. The chapter also highlights the types of IT used in the industry and how IT aids in the ascendance of counterfeiting/piracy. The findings suggest that the escalation of counterfeiting/piracy in the industry is as a result of globalisation and the predominance of technological innovation such as IT, specifically the internet and social media platforms. This chapter contributes to the strategies that the industry in developing countries use in combating counterfeiting/pricy in their business. In academia, arguably, no research has been conducted yet on counterfeiting/piracy in the fashion industry in Ghana and Nigeria, as far as the role of IT is a concern.

The term “digital public diplomacy” that appeared in the 21st century owes much to the emergence and development of the concept of Web 2.0 (interactive communication on the Internet). The principle of network interaction, in which the system becomes better with an increase in the number of users and the creation of user-generated content, made it possible to create social media platforms where news and entertainment content is created and moderated by the user. Such platforms have become an expression of the opinions of various groups of people in many countries of the world, including China. The Chinese segment of the Internet is “closed”, and many popular Western services are blocked in it. Studying the structure of Chinese social media platforms and microblogging, as well as analyzing targeted content is necessary to understand China’s public opinion, choose the right message channels and receive feedback for promoting the country’s public diplomacy. This paper reveals the main Chinese social media platforms and microblogging and provides the assessment of their popularity, as well as possibility of analyzing China’s public opinion based on “listening” to social media platforms and microblogging.

This paper examines the abduction of the schoolgirls in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria in 2014. The paper examined how the abduction of the schoolgirls generated responses and support for the rescue of the abducted girls from people and organization from different parts of the globe. The Islamists terrorist organization operating in Borno State has attracted the attention of the world since 2009 when they started attacking government establishments and security installations northeast which later escalated to major cities in Northern Nigeria. Methodologically, the paper utilized secondary sources of data to analyze the phenomenon studied. The paper revealed that the development and innovations in information and communication technology which dismantled traditional and colonial boundaries enabled people to express support, solidarity and assist victims of conflict who resides millions of Kilometers away. This shows that Internet-based communications technology has reduced the distance of time and space that characterised traditional mass media. The campaign for the release of the schoolgirls on the social media platforms particularly Twitter and Facebook has tremendously contributed to the release of some of them. Furthermore, the girls freed from abduction have received proper attention: education and reintegration programmes which enable them to start post-abduction life. In this regard, social media has become a tool for supporting the government in moments of security challenges which the Bring Back Our Girls campaign attracted foreign and domestic assistance to Nigeria in the search of the abducted girls and the fight against the Islamist insurgents.
