They obey our instructions with unlimited patience. They store the world’s knowledge and make it accessible in a split second. They are the backbone of modern society. Yet they are largely ignored. Computers. They comprise our crowning achievements to date, the pinnacle of all tools. Computer processors and software represent the most complex designs humans have ever created. The science of computers has enabled one of the most extraordinary transformations of our societies in human history. . . . You switch on your computer and launch the Internet browser. A one-word search for ‘pizza’ finds a list of pizza restaurants in your area. One click with the mouse and you are typing in your address to see if this restaurant delivers. They do! And they also allow you to order online. You choose the type of pizza you feel like, adding your favourite toppings. The restaurant even allows you to pay online, so you type in your credit card number, your address, and the time you’d like the delivery. You choose ‘as soon as possible’ and click ‘pay’. Just thirty-five minutes later there is a knock on your door. The pizza is here, smelling delicious. You tip the delivery guy and take the pizza to your table to eat. Ordering pizza is nothing unusual for many of us around the world. Although it may seem surprising, this increasingly common scenario with cheap prices, fast delivery, and access to such variety of food for millions of customers is only possible because of computers. In the situation above you might have spotted just one computer. If we take a look behind the scenes, the number of computers involved in bringing your pizza is astonishing. When you switched on your computer, you actually powered up many computers that all work together to make the display, mouse, keyboard, broadband, and main computer operate. Your computer linked itself to the Internet—which is a worldwide network of computers— with the help of computers of the phone company and Internet service provider. When you searched for ‘pizza’ the request was routed between several computers before reaching the search engine computers.

This paper reports on the process of searching with Irish words on the Irish language version of the Google Internet search engine. Five words from ‘typical’ and ‘non-typical’ domains for Irish are used, and the results are analysed in terms of the “authenticity” of the search process and results, the language usage in the sites found through the search process, and the domains represented by the results. The study identifies a number of problems encountered when searching for results in a ‘small’ language. It also indicates that the ‘official’ sector and other sectors closely related to language policy and planning are the main providers of monolingual Irish texts on the Internet, with a variety of mixed Irish and English approaches favoured by other providers.

The design of a first year course with enrolments of about 400 students which is delivered using information technology via the Internet or Intranet is reviewed. The course is composed of a variety of information technology based applications including course materials, bulletin boards, email, quizzes, access to the World Wide Web and multimedia packages linked together using a single Internet browser interface. Access statistics through the entire course were collected hourly over the sixteen weeks of semester and separated on the basis of gender and final grade. Statistical analysis is presented which shows that different groups of students access the course in different ways. Performance in the course is statistically related to the number of times the student accesses the package. We find no evidence that males are advantaged or disadvantaged compared to females through the use of information technology although females appear to use the communications part of the course more than males. Based on the access statistics, we make recommendations on the components which seem to be well received by students and we note some components which will require more careful integration into a teaching program. Overall, the delivery of a first year course via information technology works well provided the components are carefully integrated into the course framework.

In the article, the author comments on the concept of communication. Opinions are expressed about the place of information technologies in the formation of public consciousness today. It raises questions about the global development of the Internet, its impact on the integrity of not only one state, but also the world, the benefits and harms. Currently, in the era of progressive development of scientific technologies, the concept of communication has become not just an obsessive, but a subconscious concept. The translation of this term from the Latin communicatio comes in the sense that communicatio is universal. In a broad sense, it can be interpreted as ways and channels of communication with the ability to perceive and distribute various information. We should know that communication is not only an object of several social disciplines, but also an object of exact sciences.

At present there is more than half of the world population who is currently using the Internet, due to which it seems relevant to develop not only technical, but also humanitarian and metaphysical views and theories that can serve the basis for the analysis of this phenomenon. The aim of these areas of studies should be rethinking of the role and place of man in the structure of modern society, as well as the role and place of the society in human life. The methodology for these processes comprehension lies in the plane of ontology, social philosophy and anthropology, based on the integration of the latter with cybernetics and mathematics, synergetics and mathematical modeling. Systemic and historical methods are inevitably capable of synthesizing the results of such a methodological approach, leading to the appearance of neologisms, the explication of new notions that most adequately reflect the essence of modern processes. The article illustrates a number of phenomena that should be studied with the aim of forming a person not as an object, but as a subject of global digital communication.
