Low frequency acoustic thermometry in the range 4.2–20 K with implications for the value of the gas constant

Six acoustic isotherms have been plotted in the range 4.2–20 K. When thermodynamic temperatures are calculated from their intercepts on the basis of Batuecas’s value of the gas constant ( R = 8.31441 J mol -1 K -1 ), no significant systematic departure from the results of Berry’s gas thermometry is discernible. If one assumes Berry’s work to be thermodynamically correct and the present work to be thermodynamically linear, a value of the gas constant is implied only (7 ± 27 (lσ)) R / 10 6 higher than that of Batuecas, but 152 R / 10 6 lower than that of Quinn, Colclough & Chandler (Q. C. C.). Such a value is close to that expected from a forthcoming revision of the work of Q. C. C. and is in line with recent criticisms of Rowlinson et al . of their value. If this expectation is borne out gas and acoustic thermometry will be in good agreement in this range. Final results are quoted on the basis of Batuecas’s value of the gas constant and in terms of R to facilitate their recalculation as new information on the value of the gas constant becomes available.

SummaryAn international study involving 26 laboratories assayed two candidate von Willebrand Factor (VWF) concentrates (B and C) for VWF:Antigen (VWF:Ag), VWF:Ristocetin Cofactor (VWF:RCo) and VWF:Collagen binding (VWF:CB) relative to the 4th International Standard Factor VIII/VWF Plasma (4th IS Plasma) (97/586). Estimates of VWF:Ag showed good agreement between different methods, for both candidates, and the overall combined means were 11.01 IU/ml with inter-laboratory variability (GCV) of 10.9% for candidate B and 14.01 IU/ml (GCV 11.8%) for candidate C. Estimates of VWF:RCo showed no significant difference between methods for both candidates and gave overall means of 9.38 IU/ml (GCV 23.7%) for candidate B and 10.19 IU/ml (GCV 24.4%) for candidate C. Prior to the calibration of the candidates for VWF:CB it was necessary to calibrate the 4th IS Plasma relative to local frozen normal plasma pools; there was good agreement between different collagen reagents and an overall mean of 0.83 IU per ampoule (GCV 11.8%) was assigned. In contrast, estimates of VWF:CB in both candidates showed large differences between collagen reagents with inter-laboratory GCV’s of 40%. Candidate B (00/514) was established as the 1st International Standard von Willebrand Factor Concentrate by the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardisation in November 2001 with assigned values for VWF:Ag (11.0 IU/ampoule) and VWF:RCo (9.4 IU/ampoule). Large inter-laboratory variability of estimates precluded the assignment of a value for VWF:CB.

The dominant underwater noise source of a ship is known to be propeller cavitation. Recently, attempts have been made to quantify the source strength using on-board pressure sensors near the propeller, as this has advantages over conventional noise measurement. In this study, a beamforming method was used to estimate the source strength of a cavitating propeller. The method was validated against a model-scale measurement in a cavitation tunnel, which showed good agreement between the measured and estimated source levels. The method was also applied to a full-scale measurement, in which the source level was measured using an external hydrophone array. The estimated source level using the hull pressure sensors showed good agreement with the measured one above 400 Hz, which shows potential for noise monitoring using on-board sensors. A parametric study was carried out to check the practicality of the method. From the results, it was shown that a sufficient recording time is required to obtain a consistent level at high frequencies. Changing the frequency resolution had little effect on the result, as long as enough data were provided for the one-third octave band conversion. The number of sensors affected the mid- to low-frequency data.

This paper first describes an apparatus for measuring the Nusselt number N versus the Rayleigh number R of convecting normal liquid 4He layers. The most important feature of the apparatus is its ability to provide layers of different heights d, and hence different aspect ratios [Gcy ]. The horizontal cross-section of each layer is circular, and [Gcy ] is defined by [Gcy ] = D/2d where D is the diameter of the layer. We report results for 2.4 [les ] [Gcy ] [les ] 16 and for Prandtl numbers Pr spanning 0.5 [lsim ] Pr [lsim ] 0.9 These results are presented in terms of the slope N1 = RcdN/dR evaluated just above the onset of convection at Rc. We find that N1 is only a slowly increasing function of [Gcy ] in the range 6 [lsim ] [Gcy ] [lsim ] 16, and that it has a value there which is quite close to 0.72. This value of N1 is in good agreement with variational calcuations by Ahlers et al. (1981) pertinent to parallel convection rolls in cylindrical geometry. Particularly for [Gcy ] [lsim ] 6, we find additional small-scale structure in N1 associated with changes in the number of convection rolls with changing [Gcy ]. An additional test of the linearzied hydrodynamics is given by measurements of Rc. We find good agreement between theory and our data for Rc.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology for the engineering of E-maintenance platforms that is based on a value-driven approach. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology assumes that a value-driven engineering approach would help foster technological innovation for maintenance management. Indeed, value-driven engineering could be easily adopted at the business level, with subsequent positive effects on the industrial applications of new information and communication technologies solutions. Findings – The methodology combines a value-driven approach with the engineering in the maintenance scope. The methodology is tested in a manufacturing case to prove its potential to support the engineering of E-maintenance solutions. In particular, the case study concerns the investment in E-maintenance solutions developed in the framework of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system originally implemented for production purposes. Originality/value – Based on literature research, the paper presents a methodology that is implemented considering three different approaches (business theories, value-driven engineering and maintenance management). The combination of these approaches is novel and overcomes the traditional view of maintenance as an issue evaluated from a cost-benefit perspective.

A waveguide model for a pre-compressed cylindrical natural rubber vibration isolator is developed within a wide frequency range—20 to 2000 Hz—and for a wide pre-compression domain—from vanishing to the maximum in service, that is 20%. The problems of simultaneously modeling the pre-compression and frequency dependence are solved by applying a transformation of the pre-compressed isolator into a globally equivalent linearized, homogeneous, and isotropic form, thereby reducing the original, mathematically arduous, and complex problem into a vastly simpler assignment while using a straightforward waveguide approach to satisfy the boundary conditions by mode-matching. A fractional standard linear solid is applied as the visco-elastic natural rubber model while using a Mittag–Leffler function as the stress relaxation function. The dynamic stiffness is found to depend strongly on the frequency and pre-compression. The former is resulting in resonance phenomena such as peaks and troughs, while the latter exhibits a low-frequency magnitude stiffness increase in addition to peak and trough shifts with increased pre-compressions. Good agreement with nonlinear finite element results is obtained for the considered frequency and pre-compression range in contrast to the results of standard waveguide approaches.

The cracked control rods shafts found in two Swedish NPPs were subjected to thermal fatigue due to mixing of cold purge flow with hot bypass water in the upper part of the top tube on which the control rod guide tubes rests. The interaction between the jets formed at the bypass water inlets is the main source of oscillation resulting in low frequency downward motion of hot bypass water into the cold purge flow. This ultimately causes thermal fatigue in the control rod shaft in the region below the four lower bypass water inlets. The transient analyses shown in this report were done to further investigate this oscillating phenomenon and compare to experimental measurements of water temperatures inside the control rod guide tube. The simulated results show good agreement with experimental data regarding all important variables for the estimation of thermal fatigue such as peak-to-peak temperature range, frequency of oscillation and duration of the temperature peaks. The results presented in this report show that CFD using LES methodology and the open source toolbox OpenFOAM is a viable tool for predicting complex turbulent mixing flows and thermal loads.

ABSTRACTA calibration procedure for determining the model input parameters of standard a-Si:H layers, which comprise a single junction a-Si:H solar cell, is presented. The calibration procedure consists of: i) deposition of the separate layers, ii) measurement of the material properties, iii) fitting the model parameters to match the measured properties, iv) simulation of test devices and comparison with experimental results. The inverse modeling procedure was used to extract values of the most influential model parameters by fitting the simulated material properties to the measured ones. In case of doped layers the extracted values of the characteristic energies of exponentially decaying tail states are much higher than the values reported in literature. Using the extracted values of model parameters a good agreement between the measured and calculated characteristics of a reference solar cell was reached. The presented procedure could not solve directly an important issue concerning a value of the mobility gap in a-Si:H alloys.

Below about 50 kHz the level of ambient noise in the sea increases continuously towards lower frequencies. In the infrasound range the spectral slope is particularly steep. This low-frequency noise may propagate long distances with little attenuation, causing a directional pattern of infrasound in the sea. Using a standing-wave acoustic tube, we have studied the sensitivity of cod to infrasound down to 0.1 Hz by means of the cardiac conditioning technique. The threshold values, measured as particle acceleration, showed a steady decline towards lower frequencies below 10 Hz, reaching a value close to 10(−5)ms-2 at 0.1 Hz. The spectrum level at 0.1 Hz in the sea ranges between 120 and 180 dB (re 1 microPa), with corresponding particle accelerations from less than 10(−6) to more than 10(−4)ms-2. The sensitivity of cod is thus sufficient to detect the highest levels of ambient infrasound, and we put forward the hypothesis that fish may utilize information about the infrasound pattern in the sea for orientation during migration, probably in addition to an array of other sensory inputs.

An ideology is defined as a set of ideas that “explains and evaluates social conditions, helps people understand their place in society, and provides a program for social and political action” (Ball & Dagger, 2011, p. 4). As such, these concepts underpin the actions of various groups and organizations, including that of the Anonymous hacker group, which professes no ideology or creed. Rather, the group has styled itself as a kind of anarchic global brain connected by various spaces on the Internet. This work explores four main data streams to extrapolate the group’s ideology: the current socio-political context of hacking and hacktivism; the group’s self-definition (through its professed values); the group’s actions (through the “propaganda of the deed”); and the insights of others about the group This chapter defines the socio-technical context of this Anonymous hacker socio-political movement, which draws ideas from the Hacker Manifesto 2.0, which suggests the advent of a new economic system with the new technological vectors (mediums of communication). This movement is apparently pushing forth the advent of a new information regime in which the abstraction of ideas adds a “surplus” economic value that may be tapped. Styled as fighters against government tyranny, they are pushing hard against an international regime of intellectual property and information control by governments and corporations. This is being published in the spirit that (some) information wants to be free and that there is a value in direct discourse.

Abstract. A new concept of the global magnetospheric resonator is suggested for fast magnetosonic waves in which the role of the resonator is played by the near-Earth part of the plasma sheet. It is shown that the magnetosonic wave is confined in this region of the magnetosphere within its boundaries. The representative value of the resonator's eigenfrequency estimated at f~1MHz is in good agreement with observational data of ultra-low-frequency MHD oscillations of the magnetosphere with a discrete spectrum (f~0.8, 1.3, 1.9, 2.6...MHz). The theory explains the ground-based localization of the oscillations observed in the midnight-morning sector of the high-latitude magnetosphere.
