PurposeIn March 2020, with only two working days’notice the French national education system went online due to the coronavirus pandemic. This study explores the relationship between the move to distance learning, the teaching practices employed and the socio-economic context of the learners in French schools during this period. We ask how far the changes in teaching practices during the coronavirus crisis were influenced by the social context of teaching. And to what extent this context influenced the focus of the pedagogical continuity those teachers set up.Design/methodology/approachA review of the literature situates the study within the field of mathematics teaching practices. The study was carried out through a multidimensional analysis using multiple correspondences of the responses of 368 French secondary school mathematics teachers to an online questionnaire.FindingsWe found that the unprepared move to distance learning impeded the employment of dialogic practices. The socio-economic situation of the teaching was identified as a determining factor in the teachers' different interpretations of the term pedagogical continuity. Whilst those working in more deprived areas tended towards practices which focused on maintaining pupils' links with school, consolidation of knowledge and providing social/affective support, those teaching a more privileged public favoured tools and practices which allowed them to focus on the disciplinary content of their teaching.Practical implicationsThe challenge of maintaining dialogic activities – teacher education to combat inequalities.Originality/valueA quantitative study of mathematics teachers providing pedagogical continuity through distance learning for the duration of the crisis.

Abstract This article offers a brief introduction to the most frequent type of inscription: funerary inscriptions or epitaphs. The article offers a chronological overview from the Archaic period to late Antiquity, with an emphasis on Athens. It opens with a brief discussion of the archaeological and ritual contexts in which funerary inscriptions were set up, followed by a discussion of archaic epigrams and the social strategies that lay behind them. This is followed by a discussion of public and private graves that shows how epigraphic habits changed over time. The article continues with a discussion of funerary epigraphic habits outside Athens and closes with a few examples of Christian epitaphs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study how reflection affects the teacher change with a focus on teaching practices under education reforms in Hong Kong. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted narratives as the research design to unveil the contents of teachers’ reflection and how the contents affect their change in teaching practices under education reforms. Findings The study finds that teachers’ reflection starts with completion of curriculum (“technical level”), then consideration of students’ learning needs (“practical level”) and finally, the social justice and equality (“critical level”). The levels of reflection teachers engage have significant influence on their change. The higher the level of reflection teachers have, the more motivated the teachers to explore new teaching practices not only for the learning needs of students in classroom but also for the society outside classroom. ABSTRACT In different states of the Mexican Republic there are collective educational projects that, to a greater or lesser extent, are set up in public school classrooms at the basic level, promoting community involvement, work based on collectivity and the promotion of active participation by educational subjects. The political and epistemic meaning of local educational projects that go against the grain of official national education is accompanied by the projects pursued by the people and teachers’ groups, through the construction of their own knowledge and experiences from which they deploy strategies for the social appropriation of the school. These school alternatives form an emerging scenario of collective action where diverse expressions of the National Coordinator of Education Workers synthesize their political-educational projects. This article proposes to review, from an ethnographic methodology, the interactions in the school environment, how these initiatives are implemented in the educational territory and what are the main challenges in the complex task of resisting the conventional model of the state school in order to put it at the service of the teachers’ and popular struggles. The findings of these experiences of alternative education constitute significant inputs for rethinking the way in which different social actors recover the school space to feed their own projects of society a

If the social phenomenon is a reflection of nature's thought, our culture and value system, then the multidimensional crisis afflicting our society today requires us to re-examine our educational philosophy and practice at least the past 40 years.  We suffer all the bad influences of industrialization as part of the colonial process, precisely because we adopt the most advanced instrument, namely, mass schooling system with an obsession for quality-based standard as the magic spell. In this digital era, the effort of liberating society from the colonial, pioneer of independence as a condition of the proclamation of independence was a reform of the national education system. We should be scheduled deschooling society. This agenda includes the following: the paradigmatic shift from the school system to learning webs based Self Organized Learning Environment (SOLE); mass schooling to individualized, customized learning; of relevance to quality; of technical competence to the independence of the soul or creativity. This reform was way back on the three pillars of education philosophy of Ki Hajar Dewantara: family, community, and College. New demands upon the role of the teacher in the 21st century is changing.

Purpose The study aims to explore Greek libraries’ social media presence and library operation and social media use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown. Design/methodology/approach Primary data were collected via an online questionnaire that was distributed to the Greek libraries. The final sample comprised 189 libraries of all types with the exception of school libraries. Findings Results indicated that Facebook is the most widely used platform, while social media are mainly used for sharing announcements about library operations and for the promotion of events. During the COVID-19 lockdown, libraries responded quickly to the new circumstances by taking many of their services online. However, they did not fully use social media for service provision but rather used social media as a static communication channel. Only a few of the libraries grasped the opportunity to highlight their role in the promotion of public health by providing timely and reliable information. Practical implications Library leaders who are looking to harness the power of social media for service promotion and outreach should build a strategy that takes platform popularity, current social media trends, patron preferences and the specific promotional objectives of their library into consideration. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current research is the first which attempts to explore the social media presence of Greek libraries of all types and changes made to library operations and social media use in response to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate consumers’ buying intentions (BIs) towards sustainable properties with green living concept (GLC). It also aims to examine the dynamic relationships between environmental advertisements (EAd), green brand positioning (GBP), attitude towards environmental responsibility (ER) and consumers’ sustainable properties BI in the Malaysian context. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected via online questionnaire survey, which yielded 143 completed usable responses. Structural equation modelling–partial least squares (Smart PLS, version 3) was used to analyse the data. Findings The findings of this study revealed that EAd and GBP significantly affect consumers’ attitude towards ER, which in turn affects consumers’ BI of the sustainable properties with GLC. Practical implications This study suggests that without inculcating a positive attitude towards the environment among consumers, it becomes a daunting task to drive consumers to purchase sustainable properties in Malaysia. Thus, the marketers should focus on green promotional activities to attract more customers to buy sustainable properties with GLCs. Moreover, it is suggested to target the right market segment to secure more sales. Social implications The findings of this study will enable the government and the social marketers to understand the drivers of buying sustainable properties with GLC, which in turn will contribute to the higher environmental welfare. Originality/value This study is among the pioneers to examine consumers’ sustainable property purchase intention. It provides significant insights for the social marketers and policymakers to understand how to motivate consumers to purchase sustainable properties with GLCs. Moreover, this study has investigated few comparatively new links such as the direct effect of EAd and GBP on attitude towards environmental responsibility and the mediating effect of attitude towards environmental responsibility between environmental stimuli and consumer’s sustainable properties BI.

This creates a cyclical pattern of poverty within the society. This paper intends to describe educational aspiration of primary school children in a village within the District of Cisauk, Banten Province, Indonesia. 81 students of grade 4 to 6 and 8 teachers in the school were selected as participants of the study. Data from interviews and FGD reveal that despite the relatively close distance to Jakarta as the capital of Indonesia, the village still lacks of education facilities for children to enroll and the social economic of the village provide a big stumbling block for children to enroll in education.
