Interaction Between Impeller and Volute of Pumps at Off-Design Conditions

In a centrifugal pump of volute type, the respective characteristics of the impeller and the volute are such that at only one operating point can the flow parameters be constant along the length of the volute. At off-design conditions the mismatching of characteristics causes variations of velocity and pressure along the periphery of the impeller. This in turn forces cyclic variation of the flow in the impeller channels, introduces variations of the inlet incidence and contributes significantly to the direction and the magnitude of the radial thrust. Furthermore, below a certain pump output, a complete flow reversal occurs over a part of the impeller periphery, thus explaining the onset of recirculation. The paper describes the calculation approach used to derive this aspect of the flow behavior. Because of difficulties in obtaining a closed analytical solution, a step by step computation is employed. Beginning with arbitrarily chosen conditions at the volute tongue, the program computes the flow parameters for following segments, using the continuity and the momentum equations, until the exit from the last segment is reached. The inherent unsteadiness of the relative flow in the impeller is explicitly accounted for. Since the inflow and the velocity in the first segment depend upon the exit conditions of the last, the initial input must be modified, and the computation repeated, until the values are compatible with the exit conditions. In spite of several simplifying assumptions, the results of the calculations show very good agreement with published test results.

The purpose of this paper is to study flow behavior in a vibrating pipe on offshore platform. The mathematical model of unsteady, incompressible, viscous flow in a vibrating pipe is established according to the basic theory of oscillating fluid mechanics. The governing equations of flow are decomposed into a system for steady flow and another for flow oscillation, with the equations of the differential coefficients of flow parameters solved by using the parametric polynomial method. Velocity and pressure distributions are obtained for different flow conditions. Numerical results indicate that the flow behavior in the vibrating pipe on offshore platform is strongly affected by fluid properties and the pipe structure. A good agreement is obtained when comparing the results with the variational solution in constant cross-section, which shows that the method proposed in this work is effective for studying flow behavior in a vibrating pipe on offshore platform.

The paper deals with experimental and numerical research in the last stage of real 1090MW steam turbine with the last steel blade length 1220mm placed in nuclear power station. The last stage was equipped with twelve static pressure taps. It was also possible to probe in two planes - before and behind the last stage using pneumatic or optical probes. A number of last stage flow parameters were determined at the root and tip wall for nominal turbine output. Among those parameters are static pressures, Mach and Reynolds numbers, last stage reactions and steam wetness. All the directly measured and evaluated flow parameters are taken from locally measured points and that is why even 3D CFD calculation of the whole system - last stage, diffuser and exhaust hood was implemented. Measured and calculated parameters are compared. Especially static pressures are in very good agreement; the only steam wetness has bigger difference due to different measurement position. Locally measured values are enough to estimate the flow behavior of the last stage. On the other hand, the CFD simulations with well determined boundary conditions, meshes and geometry and is effective tool to simulate even very complicated flow structures in the last stage and exhaust hood.

The increase of axle load and train speed would cause intense wheelrail interactions, and lead to potential vibration related problems in train operation. For the low-frequency vibration reduction of a track system, a multi-layer track structure was proposed and analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Firstly, the analytical solution was derived theoretically, and followed by a parametric analysis to verify the vibration reduction performance. Then, a finite element simulation is carried out to highlight the influence of the tuned slab damper. Finally, the vibration and noise tests are performed to verify the results of the analytical solution and finite element simulation. As the finite element simulation indicates, after installation of the tuned slab damper, the peak reaction force of the foundation can be reduced by 60%, and the peak value of the vertical vibration acceleration would decrease by 50%. The vibration test results show that the insertion losses for the total vibration levels are 13.3 dB in the vertical direction and 21.7 dB in the transverse direction. The noise test results show that the data of each measurement point is smoother and smaller, and the noise in the generating position and propagation path can be reduced by 1.9 dB–5.5 dB.

Geological carbon storage is an effective method capable of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at significant scales. Subsurface reservoirs with sealing caprocks can provide long-term containment for the injected fluid. Nevertheless, CO2 leakage is a major concern. The presence of abandoned wells penetrating the reservoir caprock may cause leakage flow-paths for CO2 to the overburden. Assessment of time-varying leaky wells is a need. In this paper, we propose a new semi-analytical approach based on pressure-transient analysis to model the behavior of CO2 leakage and corresponding pressure distribution within the storage site and the overburden. Current methods assume instantaneous leakage of CO2 occurring with injection, which is not realistic. In this work, we employ the superposition in time and space to solve the diffusivity equation in 2D radial flow to approximate the transient pressure in the reservoirs. Fluid and rock compressibilities are taken into consideration, which allow calculating the breakthrough time and the leakage rate of CO2 to the overburden accurately. We use numerical simulations to verify the proposed time-dependent semi-analytical solution. The results show good agreement in both pressure and leakage rates. Sensitivity analysis is then conducted to assess different CO2 leakage scenarios to the overburden. The developed semi-analytical solution provides a new simple and practical approach to assess the potential of CO2 leakage outside the storage site. This approach is an alternative to numerical methods when detailed simulations are not feasible. Furthermore, the proposed solution can also be used to verify numerical codes, which often exhibit numerical artifacts.

Abstract Introduction During the current COVID-19 pandemic video consultations are increasingly common in order to minimize the risk of infection for staff and patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a spine examination via video. Methods A total of 43 patients were recruited. Each participant underwent a video-based (VB) and a conventional face-to-face (FTF) spine examination. Pain intensity, active range of motion, inspection, a neurophysiologic basic exam and provocations tests were evaluated using video-based and face-to-face methods. Results The intra-rater reliability (IRR) was measured between both examinations. Good to very good IRR values were obtained in inspection (Kappa between 0,752 und 0,944), active range of motion and basic neurophysiological examination (Kappa between 0,659 und 0,969). Only moderate matches were found in specific provocation tests (Kappa between 0,407 und 0,938). A video-based spine examination is a reliable tool for measuring pain intensity, active range of motion and a basic neurophysiologic exam. Conclusion A basic spine examination during a video consultation is possible. A good agreement of the test results between video-based and face-to-face examination could be found.

The combined brake system (CBS) is a mechanism that links the front and rear brakes for scooters. For two-wheeled scooters, a CBS with appropriate braking force distribution can reduce the risk of crashing accidents due to insufficient driving proficiency. The design of the braking force distribution for a CBS is challenging to the designer because it has to fulfill many requirements such as braking performance, ride comfort, reliability, and low costs. This paper proposes a systematic method to optimize the parameters of CBS. The evaluation indexes for the design are first discussed. The steps to determine the critical parameter to meet the indexes and a method to predict braking performance are developed. Finally, driving tests are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results showed that the deceleration of the tested scooter equipped with the designed CBS achieves an average mean fully developed deceleration (MFDD) of 5.246 m/s2, higher than the homologation requirement. Furthermore, the proposed method’s prediction of braking performance is in good agreement with the test results, with errors <1%.

Mechanistic models have been developed for each of the existing two-phase flow patterns in an annulus, namely bubble flow, dispersed bubble flow, slug flow, and annular flow. These models are based on two-phase flow physical phenomena and incorporate annulus characteristics such as casing and tubing diameters and degree of eccentricity. The models also apply the new predictive means for friction factor and Taylor bubble rise velocity presented in Part I. Given a set of flow conditions, the existing flow pattern in the system can be predicted. The developed models are applied next for predicting the flow behavior, including the average volumetric liquid holdup and the average total pressure gradient for the existing flow pattern. In general, good agreement was observed between the experimental data and model predictions.

This paper presents fatigue behaviors and the stiffness degradation law of concrete continuous beams with external prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. Three specimens were tested under fatigue loading, and the influence of different load levels on the stiffness degradation and fatigue life were studied, and it was found that the stiffness degradation of three test specimens exhibited a three-stage change rule, namely rapid decrease, stable degradation, and sharp decline, but there are obvious differences in the rate and amplitude of stiffness degradation. The load level has a significant influence on the fatigue life of the test specimens. An analytical model with load level considered was proposed to calculate the residual stiffness and predict the stiffness degradation, which is in good agreement with the test results. The model of stiffness degradation presents a possible solution for practical engineering applications of concrete continuous beams with externally prestressed CFRP tendons subjected to different fatigue loadings.

An analytical solution has been developed to estimate the inclined pullout capacity of an embedded suction anchor in clay seafloor. Validation has been made through comparisons with a limited number of centrifuge model test results. Results indicate that the inclined pullout capacity of an embedded suction anchor in clay decreases as the load inclination angle to the horizontal increases. As the point of the load application moves downward, the inclined pullout capacity increases, reaches its peak, and then starts to decrease.

Thermo-mechanical finite element analysis was carried out to study the deformation behavior and temperature distribution during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). The material model used is the Johnson-Cook constitution model that can consider the multiplication effect of strain, strain rate, and temperature on the flow stress. The effects of pressing speed, pressing temperature, workpiece material and die geometry on the temperature rise and flow behavior during ECAP process were investigated. The simulated temperature rise due to deformation heating was compared with published experimental results and a good agreement was obtained. Among the various die geometries studied, the two-turn die with 0° round corner generates the highest and most uniform plastic strain in the workpiece.
