Analytical Modeling and Impedance Characterization of the Nonlinear Dynamics of Thermomechanically Coupled Structures

In many applications, coupling between thermal and mechanical domains can significantly influence structural dynamics. Analytical approaches to study such problems have previously used assumptions such as a proscribed temperature distribution or one-way coupling to enable assessments. In contrast, time-stepping numerical simulations have captured more detailed aspects of multiphysics interactions at the expense of high computational demands and lack of insight of the underlying physics. To provide a new tool that closes the knowledge gap and broadens potential for analytical techniques, this research formulates and analytically solves a thermomechanical beam model considering a combination of thermal and mechanical excitations that result in extreme nonlinear behaviors. Validated by experimental evidence, the analytical framework facilitates the prediction of the nonlinear dynamics of multi-degree-of-freedom structures exhibiting two-way thermomechanical coupling. The analysis enables the investigation of mechanical and thermomechanical impedance metrics as a means to forecast future nonlinear dynamic behaviors such as extreme bifurcations. For the first time, characteristics of mechanical impedance previously reported to predict the onset of dynamic bifurcations in discrete systems are translated to illuminate the nearness of distributed parameter structures to bifurcations. In addition, fundamental connections are discovered in the thermomechanical evaluations between nonlinear low amplitude dynamics of the postbuckled beam and the energetic snap-through vibration that are otherwise hidden by studying displacement amplitudes alone.

Pectin-based gelled systems have gained increasing attention for the design of newly developed food products. For this reason, the characterization of such formulas is a necessity in order to present scientific data and to introduce an appropriate finished product to the industry. Various analytical techniques are available for the evaluation of the systems formulated on the basis of pectin and the designed gel. In this paper, general analytical approaches for the characterization of pectin-based gelled systems were categorized into several subsections including physicochemical analysis, visual observation, textural/rheological measurement, microstructural image characterization, and psychorheological evaluation. Three-dimensional trials to assess correlations among microstructure, texture, and taste were also discussed. Practical examples of advanced objective techniques including experimental setups for small and large deformation rheological measurements and microstructural image analysis were presented in more details.

Marie Larsen Ryberg: Post Socialistic Answers: Schoolteachers and the “Modernising” of Elementary School in Brcko, Bosnia-Hercegovina Since the disintegration of Yugoslavia, international organisations and scholars have stressed the problems of primary education in Bosnia-Herzegovina, pointing to the “legacy” from socialist times and a need to “modernise” the school system. The aim of this article is to analyse the ways in which schoolteachers in Brčko, Bosnia-Herzegovina relate to the two most prominent NGOs present in Brčko and their efforts to “modernise” the teaching methodologies and implement “democracy” and “civic education”. The article argues that an understanding of the teachers’ practices should include a broader analytical framework than conceptualising them as a “legacy” or “backward.” For a more nuanced understanding, the article takes three analytical approaches. First, it argues that the teachers’ practices and ideas in relation to knowledge should be viewed as connected to a socialist narrative of modern development. Second, it points to gift-giving as a way of understanding how the teachers draw on teaching methods such as lectures and learning by heart. Third, the article points to a model of the socialist system, and suggests that an appreciation of the teachers’ exclusive role as bureaucrats in a socialist system of allocation is central to an understanding of their practices today. The article thus unfolds the different ideas, motives and structures that shape the teachers’ practices as a post-socialist respond rather than as a “legacy.” Keywords: Post-socialism, Bosnia-Herzegovina, education, modernization, knowledge, gift-giving.

Nausea and emesis resulting from disease or drug treatment may be associated with disrupted gastric myoelectric activity (GMA). Conventional analytical techniques can determine the relative degrees of brady-, normo-, and tachygastric power, but lose information relative to the basic slow wave shape. The aim of the present study was to investigate the application of advanced analytical techniques in the analysis of disrupted GMA recorded after administration of sulprostone, a prostaglandin E3/1 agonist, in ferrets. Ferrets were implanted with radiotelemetry devices to record GMA, blood pressure, heart rate (HR) and core body temperature 1 week before the administration of sulprostone (30 μg/kg) or vehicle (saline, 0.5 mL/kg). GMA was initially analyzed using fast Fourier transformations (FFTs) and a conventional power partitioning. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) was also applied to the GMA recordings to reveal information relative to the fluctuation of signals around local trends. Sample entropy (SampEn) analysis was used for examining the regularity of signals. Conventional signal processing techniques revealed that sulprostone increased the dominant frequency (DF) of slow waves, with an increase in the percentage power of the tachygastric range and a decrease in the percentage power of the normogastric range. DFA revealed that sulprostone decreased the fluctuation function, indicative of a loss of the variability of GMA fluctuations around local trends. Sulprostone increased SampEn values, indicating a loss of regularity in the GMA data. Behaviorally, sulprostone induced emesis and caused defecation. It also increased blood pressure and elevated HR, with an associated decrease in HR variability (HRV). Further analysis of HRV revealed a decrease in both low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) components, with an overall increase in the LF/HF ratio. Sulprostone did not affect core body temperature. In conclusion, DFA and SampEn permit a detailed analysis of GMA, which is necessary to understand the action of sulprostone to modulate gastric function. The action to decrease HRV and increase the LF/HF ratio may be consistent with a shift toward sympathetic nervous system dominance, commonly seen during nausea.

Purpose The rising proportion of internet users in Sub-Saharan Africa and the lack of analytical techniques, as decision support systems, in choosing among alternative internet service providers (ISPs) by consumers underpin this study. The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach for evaluating high-speed internet service offered by ISPs in a sub-Saharan African country. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample size of 150, pairwise comparisons of two ISPs along five criteria of cost, usability, support, reliability and speed were performed by ten person groups of university students working in various organizations in Ghana and undertaking an online Six Sigma Course. Geometric means were employed to aggregate the scores in 15 groups, and these scores were then normalized and used as input into an analytical hierarchy process grid. Findings The results show that consumers of internet services highly emphasize the cost attribute of internet provision in their decision making. On the other hand, it was realized that consumers least emphasize the support provided by ISPs in their decision making among alternative ISPs. Originality/value This study has sought to provide an analytical framework for assessing the quality of service provided by alternative ISPs in a developing economy’s context. The evaluating criteria in this framework also reveal the key consumer requirements in internet service provision in a developing economy’s environment. This, to a large extent, will inform the marketing strategies of existing ISPs in Ghana as well as prospective ones intending to enter the Ghanaian market. Besides, the National Communication Authority, a regulator of communication services provision in Ghana, will be informed about the performances of the ISPs along five performance criteria. This is expected to aid in their regulatory functions.

Cutting-edge techniques have always been utilized in petroleum exploration and production to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. The demand for petroleum in the form of oil and gas is expected to increase for electricity production, transport and chemical production, largely driven by an increase in energy consumption in the developing world. Innovations in analytical methods will continue to play a key role in the industry moving forwards as society shifts towards lower carbon energy systems and more advantaged oil and gas resources are targeted. This volume brings together new analytical approaches and describes how they can be applied to the study of petroleum systems. The papers within this volume cover a wide range of topics and case studies, in the fields of fluid and isotope geochemistry, organic geochemistry, imaging and sediment provenance. The work illustrates how the current, state-of-the-art technology can be effectively utilised to address ongoing challenges in petroleum geoscience.

Now that complete genome sequences are available for a variety of organisms, the elucidation of gene functions involved in metabolism necessarily includes a better understanding of cellular responses upon mutations on all levels of gene products, mRNA, proteins, and metabolites. Such progress is essential since the observable properties of organisms – the phenotypes – are produced by the genotype in juxtaposition with the environment. Whereas much has been done to make mRNA and protein profiling possible, considerably less effort has been put into profiling the end products of gene expression, metabolites. To date, analytical approaches have been aimed primarily at the accurate quantification of a number of pre-defined target metabolites, or at producing fingerprints of metabolic changes without individually determining metabolite identities. Neither of these approaches allows the formation of an in-depth understanding of the biochemical behaviour within metabolic networks. Yet, by carefully choosing protocols for sample preparation and analytical techniques, a number of chemically different classes of compounds can be quantified simultaneously to enable such understanding. In this review, the terms describing various metabolite-oriented approaches are given, and the differences among these approaches are outlined. Metabolite target analysis, metabolite profiling, metabolomics, and metabolic fingerprinting are considered. For each approach, a number of examples are given, and potential applications are discussed.

This article reviews selected techniques and current trends in the analysis of contaminants in sediments since the year 2000. Because of the variety of anthropogenic target analytes encountered in sediments, the monograph is separated into inorganic and organic subsections. Practical aspects, including advances in: analysis of standards, biological methods, instrumental methods, modeling aspects, sample preparation and extraction methods, and speciation techniques are discussed. The sediment matrices are complex and require an integrated approach encompassing sampling, preparation, extraction, and analysis steps to reach the detection levels required. Often hyphenated techniques are employed to utilize the multi-resolving and isolation powers of the combined instrumentation. The review mainly focuses on the ability of developing techniques and their approaches and applications not only to solve new problems but also to push detection limits on historically well known inorganic and organic contaminants, while highlighting emerging persistent organic pollutants. The impetus of such research is to obtain a more factual understanding of an ecosystem and overall condition of its habitant in the context of sediments that may act as reservoirs for anthropogenic pollutants. The review is not comprehensive but rather provides an overview of the status of sediment chemical analysis and focuses on the trends in analytical approaches towards analytes of anthropogenic contaminants in sediments.

Cucina, Walmsley, Gast, Martin, and Curtin (2017) raise an important issue in evaluating whether our current approaches for key driver analysis on employee opinion survey data are indeed best practices. As has been argued elsewhere (Putka & Oswald, 2016; Scherbaum, Putka, Naidoo, & Youssefnia, 2010), there is and can be misalignment between current and best practices. We agree with Cucina et al. that our field should engage in larger discussion of these issues. That discussion is critical, as industrial and organizational (I-O) psychologists are competing with those outside our field who have either little knowledge of best practices in data analysis (but who have been empowered by technology that automates the analysis) or little knowledge of psychology (but a great deal of knowledge in big data analytical techniques). I-O psychologists are in the vanguard of survey data analysis (Ducey et al., 2015), and we have a responsibility to maintain the standards of our field as well as to wield our influence to guide other practitioners outside our field on sound theoretical and analytical approaches.

This paper extends input shaping control to one-dimensional continua. Unlike discrete systems where the input is shaped only in the temporal domain, temporal and spatial input shaping can produce zero residual vibration in setpoint position control of distributed strings and beams. For collocated and noncollocated boundary control of strings and domain control of strings and pinned beams, the response to step inputs is solved in closed form using delays. For a clamped beam model, a closed form infinite modal series is used. The boundary controlled string can be setpoint regulated using two-pulse zero vibration (ZV) and three-pulse zero vibration and derivative (ZVD) shapers but ZVD is not more robust to parameter variations than ZV, a unique characteristic of second-order partial differential equations systems. Noncollocated ZV and ZVD boundary control enables rigid body translation of a string with zero residual vibration. Domain controlled strings and pinned beams with spatial input distributions that satisfy certain orthogonality conditions (e.g., midspan point load or uniformly distributed load) can be setpoint regulated with shaped inputs. For the cantilevered beam, modal shaping of the input distribution and ZV or ZVD temporal shaping drives the tip to the desired position with zero residual vibration.

<p>Arvo Pärt’s music has received little attention from theoretical scholars, in part, because it is often labelled as minimalist or process music. This is due primarily to his use of limited sets of musical materials and predetermined repetitive melodic and rhythmic procedures. In this sense, it is implied that authorial decisions play little role in the compositional process of his music. In addition, the confluences of multiple M-voice/T-voice pairings, which create a rich array of harmonically non-functional chord progressions, do not lend themselves to traditional approaches to musical analysis, thus acting as a further deterrent to analysts and theorists.  This investigation postulates that the presence of the ‘composer’s hand’ is much more significant in Pärt’s music than has been previously realised by those who label his music as minimalist or process music; and by engaging in a multimodal methodology, this thesis demonstrates that Pärt’s music does, in fact, respond to post-tonal analytical approaches. It also shows that a non-traditional application of post-tonal analytical techniques can yield valuable and productive insights into Pärt’s compositional system, and that there is actually much for theorists and analysts to discover in his music.  The approach to the investigation is based on drawing from and combining several post-tonal analytical methods, any one of which would be insufficient on its own, given the uniqueness of Pärt’s sound world and the fact that such approaches have been developed to enlighten very different repertoires. The methodology incorporates the following post-tonal analytical methods: descriptions of the ‘musical fabric’ of each work; a detailed analysis of how each composition appears to have been constructed; new approaches to visualising the relationships between the pitch classes of particular works; and mappings of each work’s pitch-class and interval-vector content.  This investigation demonstrates, through multimodal analysis of six selected string orchestral works by the composer, that hidden beneath the seemingly ‘minimal’ surface layers of Pärt’s music are carefully crafted musical constructions that result from intersecting procedures and multifaceted rules, as well as what appear to be intentional exceptions to those rules – thus revealing the composer’s hand. An awareness of these hidden constructions and the careful craftsmanship that went into their creation can provide the informed listener with the critical foundation from which the aesthetic value of Pärt’s music can be assessed and appreciated.</p>
