Experimental Study on Splashing During Liquid Jet Impingement Onto a Liquid Film

A liquid jet is of considerable importance in many industrial fields including jet cleaning, jet engine and combustion. As an important example, the Monju nuclear power plant in Japan experienced a sodium leak in 1995. This led to a fire accident because the sodium reacted with oxygen in the air. To predict the significance of the fire accident, accurate evaluation of the amount of splashed droplets caused by the sodium jet impingement is of great importance. In this work, the relationship between the condition of a liquid jet and the amount of splashed droplets is explored experimentally. In the experiments, a liquid jet was emanated vertically downward from a circular nozzle onto a liquid film formed on a horizontal plate. Visualization using a high speed camera was performed to observe the condition of the liquid jet. From the nozzle, the mode of the liquid jet changed jet, lump and drop. Here, the jet mode means the continuous jet with smooth surface, the lump mode the continuous jet with disturbed surface and the drop mode the broken jet. Dependences of the transition length to each mode on the important parameters such as the jet velocity and the nozzle diameter were investigated. Measurement was also conducted for the splash ratio that is defined as the ratio of the amount of splashed droplets to the jet flow rate. It was found that the splash ratio is high when the liquid jet is in the drop mode at the impact point. It was shown that the splash ratio can be correlated well as a function of the impact Weber number and the Strouhal number of the droplets impinging the liquid film.

Operating conditions in high speed mainshaft ball bearings applied in new aircraft propulsion systems require enhanced bearing designs and materials. Rotational speeds, loads, demands on higher thrust capability, and reliability have increased continuously over the last years. A consequence of these increasing operating conditions are increased bearing temperatures. A state of the art jet engine high speed ball bearing has been modified with an oil channel in the outer diameter of the bearing. This oil channel provides direct cooling of the outer ring. Rig testing under typical flight conditions has been performed to investigate the cooling efficiency of the outer ring oil channel. In this paper the experimental results including bearing temperature distribution, power dissipation, bearing oil pumping and the impact on oil mass and parasitic power loss reduction are presented.

Hydraulic slotting has become one of the most common technologies adopted to increase permeability in low permeability in coal field seams. There are many factors affecting the rock breaking effects of water jets, among which the impact force cannot be ignored. To study the influencing effects of contact surface shapes on jet flow patterns and impact force, this study carried out experiments involving water jet impingement planes and boreholes under different pressure conditions. The investigations included numerical simulations under solid boundary based on gas–liquid coupling models and indoor experiments under high-speed camera observations. The results indicated that when the water jets impinged on different contact surfaces, obvious reflection flow occurred, and the axial velocity had changed through three stages during the development process. Moreover, the shapes of the contact surfaces, along with the outlet pressure, were found to have impacts on the angles and velocities of the reflected flow. The relevant empirical formulas were summarized according to this study's simulation results. In addition, the flow patterns and shapes of the contact surfaces were observed to have influencing effects on the impact force. An impact force model was established in this study based on the empirical formula, and the model was verified using both the simulation and experimental results. It was confirmed that the proposed model could provide important references for the optimization of the technical parameters water jet systems, which could provide theoretical support for the further intelligent and efficient transformation of coal mine drilling water jet technology.

Abstract This paper presents the experimental analysis of the impact of swirl number of cross-flowing air stream on liquid jet spray trajectory at a fixed air flow velocity of 42 m/s with the corresponding Mach number of 0.12. The experiments were conducted for 4 different swirl numbers (0, 0.2, 0.42 and 0.73) using swirl vanes at air inlet having angles of 0°, 15°, 30° and 45° respectively. Liquid to air momentum flux ratio (q) was varied from 5 to 25. High speed (@ 500 fps) images of the spray were captured and those images were processed using MATLAB to obtain the path of the spray at various momentum flux ratios. The results show interesting trends for the spray trajectory and the jet spread in swirling air flow. High swirling flows not only lead to spray with lower radial penetration due to sharp bending and disintegration of liquid jet, but also result in spray with high jet spread and spray area. Based on the results, correlations for the spray path have been proposed which incorporates the effects of the swirl number of the air flow.

This paper presents the outcome of a study on the feasibility of a nuclear powered High-Speed Pentamaran, initiated by Nigel Gee and Associates and the Delft University of Technology. It explores the competitiveness of a nuclear power plant for the critical characteristics of a marine propulsion plant. Three nuclear reactor types are selected: the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), the Pebble-bed and Prismatic-block HTGR. Their characteristics are estimated for a power range from 100 MWth to 1000 MWth in a parametric design, providing a level base for comparison with conventional gas turbine technology. The reactor scaling is based on reference reactors with an emphasis on marine application. This implies that preference is given to passive safety and simplicity, as they are key-factors for a marine power plant. A case study for a 60-knot Pentamaran shows the impact of a nuclear power plant on a ship designed with combustion gas turbine propulsion. The Prismatic-block HTGR is chosen as most suitable because of its low weight compared to the PWR, in spite of the proven technology of a PWR. The Pebble-bed HTGR is considered too voluminous for High-Speed craft. Conservative data and priority to simple systems and high safety leads to an unfavorable high weight of the nuclear plant in competition with the original gas turbine driven Pentamaran. The nuclear powered ship has some clear advantages at high sailing ranges.

Abstract Steam water separator is the core equipment of nuclear power plant. It is very vital for improving the efficiency of the steam separator to study the impact characteristics between the droplets and the curved dry wall of the steam separator under the action of the rotating air flow. In this paper, the characteristics of droplet impinging on the dry wall in the rotating flow field are analyzed by establishing a visualization experimental device. A high-speed camera was used to capture the impact of droplets with different diameters on the dry wall of a non-wetting curved surface at different gas velocities. At the same time, using image processing tool in MATLAB to obtain image boundary information. The characteristics of spreading factor, droplet deformation factor and initial diffusion velocity of droplets impacting the surface dry wall under different wind speeds are studied.

Abstract The steam generator is an important part of the nuclear power plant, and the corrugated plate separator plays the important role of drying steam in the steam generator to improve power generation efficiency and protect the safety of the system. The separation mechanism of the corrugated plate separator is relatively complicated. The droplets are moved by the drag force of the steam and gravity in the corrugated plate separator, and captured by the wall of the corrugated plate separator. When the velocity is increased, the inertial force of droplet is increased, so that the droplet is more easily captured by the wall of the corrugated plate separator, and the separation efficiency of the corrugated plate separator is increased. In this paper, the phenomenon of droplet impact on the inclined wall is studied by high-speed photography technology, and the cause and mechanism of the phenomenon are analyzed. By analyzing the spreading and splashing on the droplets impacting on the inclined wall, the relationship between the inclination angle of the droplet impacting on the inclined wall and the spreading is obtained, and the influence of droplets with different Weber numbers, and dry and wetted walls were analyzed, which provide a basis for the optimization of the corrugated plate separator.

Generation III+ reactors are the latest generation of Nuclear Power Plants to enter the market. The key evolution in these reactors is the introduction of stringent safety standards. This is done through thorough incident scenario analysis and preparation, resulting in the addition of novel active and passive auxiliary safety systems, affecting the power consumption in the balance of plant. This paper analyses the parameters of PWR power plants of similar design, to determine the parameters for optimal efficiency, regarding gross and net electrical output, determining the impact the balance of plant has on this efficiency. While two of the three main factors affecting the Rankine cycle – boiler pressure and steam temperature – behaved as theoretically expected, there was a notable point of departure with the third parameter – condenser pressure. The relationship between steam temperature and gross electrical efficiency was linear across all reactors but the relation between the steam temperature and the net electrical efficiency ceased to be linear for secondary loop steam temperatures above 290°C. The relationship between boiler pressure and both gross and net electrical efficiency was linear, proving the Rankine cycle. A relationship was not observed between the condenser pressure and either the gross or net electrical efficiency

Currently, most of commercial needle-free jet injectors generate the liquid jet by a method called “driving object method” (DOM); however, the reliability and efficiency are still questioned. This paper proposes a new concept of jet generation method, known as “impact driven method” (IDM). A prototype of an IDM jet injector is designed, built, tested, and compared to a commercial device (Cool.click, Tigard, OR). Fundamental characteristics, i.e., the exit jet velocity and impact pressure, are measured. Jet injection processes are visualized both in air and in 20% polyacrylamide by high speed photography. In this study, from the prototype of the IDM jet injector, a maximum jet velocity of 400 m/s and impact peak pressure of 68 MPa can be obtained. It is clear that the IDM jet injector provides a double pulsed liquid jet, which is a major advantage over the commercial jet injector. Because, the first pulse gives a shorter erosion stage, and then, immediately the second pulse follows and provides a better penetration, wider lateral dispersion, and considerably less back splash. Hence, lower pain level and higher delivery efficiency should be achieved. It can be concluded that the IDM concept is highly feasible for implementation in real applications, either for human or animal injection. However, the control and accuracy of IDM still needs to be carefully investigated.

The mechanics of impact by a high-speed liquid jet onto a solid surface covered by a liquid layer is described. After the liquid jet contacts the liquid layer, a shock wave is generated, which moves toward the solid surface. The shock wave is followed by the liquid jet penetrating through the layer. The influence of the liquid layer on the side jetting and stress waves is studied. Damage sites on soda-lime glass, PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) and aluminium show the role of shear failure and cracking and provide evidence for analyzing the impact pressure on the wetted solids and the spatial pressure distribution. The liquid layer reduces the high edge impact pressures, which occur on dry targets. On wetted targets, the pressure is distributed more uniformly. Despite the cushioning effect of liquid layers, in some cases, a liquid can enhance material damage during impact due to penetration and stressing of surface cracks.

In the decommissioning work of nuclear power plants, it is important to grasp the sedimentation place of molten materials. However, the technique to grasp exactly sedimentation place is not established now. Therefore, the detailed and phenomenological numerical simulation code named JUPITER for predicting the molten core behavior is developed. In the study, visualization experiment and numerical simulation were performed to validate the applicability of the JUPITER to the hydraulic relocation behavior in core internals. The test section used in this experiment simulated the structure of the core internals, such as a control rod and a fuel support piece, simply. The working fluid is water under the atmospheric pressure. The experiment uses a high-speed video camera to visualize the flow behavior. The behavior and the speed of the liquid film in a narrow flow channel is obtained. For the numerical analysis carried out prior to the experiment, the behavior of flow down liquid was shown. The typical behavior was also observed that the tip of a liquid film flowing down splits into.
