Development of a Profiled Multilayer Tube for High Temperature Solar Receivers and Heat Exchangers

In solar tower plants absorber tubes are the main components of various solar receivers, e.g. steam receivers, salt receivers, pressurized air receivers. The solar radiation on the absorber tube causes an inhomogeneous temperature distribution because most of the solar radiation along the tube circumference is one-sided. The resulting internal stresses of the tube and the maximum fluid temperature decrease the lifetime significantly. Within the projects SOLHYCO and FUTUR a profiled multilayer tube (PML) is currently under development in order to reduce this problem. It consists of three metallic layers: a high temperature nickel-based alloy at the outer side, a copper layer as intermediate layer and another high temperature nickel-based alloy at the inner side of the tube. The outer layer provides the structural strength while the copper is used to conduct the heat from the irradiated side to the opposite side. The inner layer protects the copper from corrosion and oxidation at high temperatures. In addition, a wire coil is inserted (profiled) to increase the heat transfer on the inside. The PML is manufactured in a hydro-forming process by deforming the tube composite with water under high pressure. To demonstrate the performance and to determine the heat transfer, the pressure loss and the temperature distribution, a test loop was built to simulate the different loads under laboratory conditions. The thermo hydraulic measurements and finite element calculations show that the temperature gradient and the maximum temperature can be reduced significantly. Based on these studies the advantages of the PML in comparison to common tubes will be presented as well as several possibilities for future improvements.

In this paper, the thermal stress characteristics of the pipe-in-pipe (PIP) system under high temperature condition are analyzed. The PIP is a type of pipe applied in sodium-cooled faster reactor (SFR) and has a different geometry from a single pipe. In particular, under the high temperature condition of the SFR, the high thermal stress is generated due to the temperature gradient occurring between the inner pipe and outer pipe. To investigate the thermal stress characteristics, three cases are considered according to geometry of the support. The fully constrained support and intermediate support are considered for case 1 and 2, respectively. For case 3, both supports are applied to the actual curved pipe. The finite element (FE) analyses are performed in two steps for each case. Firstly, the heat transfer analysis is carried out considering the thermal conduction, convection and radiation conditions. From the heat transfer analysis, the temperature distribution results in the piping system are obtained. Secondly, the structural analysis is performed considering the temperature distribution results and boundary conditions. Finally, the effects of the geometric characteristics on the thermal stress in the PIP system are analyzed.

A FLiNaK high temperature test loop, which was designed to support the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR) program, was constructed in 2012 and is the largest engineering-scale fluoride loop in the world. The loop is built of Hastelloy C276 and is capable of operating at the flow rate up to 25m3/h and at the temperature up to 650°C. It consists of an overhung impeller sump-type centrifugal pump, an electric heater, a heat exchanger, a freeze valve and a mechanical one, a storage tank, etc. Salt purification was conducted in batch mode before it was transferred to and then stored in the storage tank. The facility was upgraded in three ways last year, with aims of testing a 30kW electric heater and supporting the heat transfer experiment in heat exchanger. Firstly, an original 100kW electric heater was replaced with a 335kW one to compensate the overlarge heat loss in the radiator. A pressure transmitter was subsequently installed in the inlet pipe of this updated heater. Finally, a new 30kW electric heater was installed between the pump and radiator, the purpose of which was to verify the core’s convective heat transfer behavior of a simulator design of TMSR. Immediately after these above works, shakedown test of the loop was carried out step by step. At first the storage tank was gradually preheated to 500°C so as to melt the frozen salt. Afterwards, in order to make the operation of transferring salt from storage tank to loop achievable, the loop system was also preheated to a relatively higher temperature 530°C. Since the nickel-base alloy can be severely corroded by the FLiNaK salt once the moisture and oxygen concentration is high, vacuum pumping and argon purging of the entire system were alternatively performed throughout the preheating process, with the effect of controlling them to be lower than 100ppm. Once the salt was transferred into the loop, the pump was immediately put into service. At the very beginning of operation process, it was found that flow rate in the main piping could not be precisely measured by the ultrasonic flow meter. Ten days later, the pump’s dry running gas seal was out of order. As a result, the loop had to be closed down to resolve these issues.

The operating temperature of the photovoltaic module is an important issue because it is directly linked with system efficiency. The objective of this work is to evaluate temperature distribution in the photovoltaic module under different environmental conditions. The results shown that photovoltaic module operating temperature depends not only on the ambient temperature or solar radiation dependent but also depends on wind speed and wind direction. It is presented that the mounting conditions which are not taken into consideration by most of the literature models also play a significant role in heat transfer. Depends on mounting type an increase in module operating temperature in the range 10-15oC was observed which cause further PV system efficiency decrease of about 3.8-6.5 %.

Abstract High performance and economically viable cooling solutions must be developed to reduce weight and volume, allowing for a wide-spread utilization of hybrid electric vehicles. The traditional embedded microchannel cooling heat sinks suffer from high pressure drop due to small channel dimensions and long flow paths in two-dimensional (2D) plane. Utilizing direct “embedded cooling” strategy in combination with top access three-dimensional (3D) manifold strategy reduces the pressure drop by nearly an order of magnitude. In addition, it provides more temperature uniformity across large area chips and it is less prone to flow instability in two-phase boiling heat transfer. This study presents the experimental results for single-phase thermofluidic performance of an embedded silicon microchannel cold plate (CP) bonded to a 3D manifold for heat fluxes up to 300 W/cm2 using single-phase R-245fa. The heat exchanger consists of a 5 × 5 mm2 heated area with 25 parallel 75 × 150 μm2 microchannels, where the fluid is distributed by a 3D-manifold with four microconduits of 700 × 250 μm2. Heat is applied to the silicon heat sink using electrical Joule-heating in a metal serpentine bridge and the heated surface temperature is monitored in real-time by infrared (IR) camera and electrical resistance thermometry. The maximum and average temperatures of the chip, pressure drop, thermal resistance, and average heat transfer coefficient (HTC) are reported for flow rates of 0.1, 0.2. 0.3, and 0.37 L/min and heat fluxes from 25 to 300 W/cm2. The proposed embedded microchannels-3D manifold cooler, or EMMC, device is capable of removing 300 W/cm2 at maximum temperature 80 °C with pressure drop of less than 30 kPa, where the flow rate, inlet temperature, and pressures are 0.37 L/min, 25 °C and 350 kPa, respectively. The experimental uncertainties of the test results are estimated, and the uncertainties are the highest for heat fluxes < 50 W/cm2 due to difficulty in precisely measuring the fluid temperature at the inlet and outlet of the microcooler.

Bridge tower, time-varying temperature field, heat transfer analysis, finite element model. Abstract. Long span suspension bridges are subjected to daily, seasonal and yearly environmental thermal effects induced by solar radiation and ambient air temperature. This paper aims to investigate the temperature distribution of a tower of a long span suspension bridge. Two-dimensional heat transfer models are utilized to determine the time-dependent temperature distribution of the bridge tower of the bridge. The solar radiation model is utilized to examine the time-varying temperature distribution. Finite element models are constructed for the bridge tower to compute the temperature distribution. The numerical models can successfully predict the structural temperature field at different time. The methodology employed in the paper can be applied to other long-span bridges as well.

Many modern Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) process waste heat recovery exchangers operate in high temperature environments. These exchangers are associated with the thermal reactor system where the tubesheet/tube/ferrule assemblies are exposed to gasses at temperatures approaching 3000°F. Because sulfur compounds are present in the process gas, the carbon steel tubesheet and tubes in the assembly will be deteriorated by sulfidation as the operating metal temperature rises above 600°F. Ferrule systems are used to protect the carbon steel from exposure to excessive temperatures. The temperature distribution in the steel tubesheet/tube/ferrule system is affected by process gas flow and heat transfer through the assembly. Rather than depend upon “assumed” heat transfer coefficients and fluid flow distribution, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) investigation was conducted to study the flow fields and heat transfer in the tubesheet assembly. It was found that the configuration of the ferrule installation has a large influence on the temperature distribution in the steel materials and, therefore, the possible sulfidation of the carbon steel parts.

A typical industrial application of high temperature pumps involves handling of fluids up to 400 °C. This is critical for pump bearing housing, where thermal dissipation is not effective due to geometric configuration. Therefore, without any external cooling system, bearings and lubricating oil temperatures can exceed allowable values prescribed by both API 610 Reference Standard [1] and bearing manufacturer [2]. Particularly, for a overhung pump, when pumped fluid temperature is above 200 °C, external cooling system is necessary and water is usually used for this purpose. Consequently, water availability must be taken into account when considering pump’s location, which is particularly difficult in desert areas. From these considerations was the idea to enhance the heat transfer of the pump support, in order to avoid any need of cooling water. The problem has been dealt with numerical analysis and experimental tests. First, we have considered the original support in the most critical situation, the stand-by condition, where no forced convection (fan) is effective. From the results pertaining to currently used support, we have got the hints to improve heat transfer by a full redesign. Finally an experimental validation has been set up. The measures gained allow us to validate hypothesis taken into consideration in the numerical simulation.
