Numerical and Experimental Research on the Ultimate Strength for a Stiffened Titanium Cylinder

Titanium alloys are widely used in naval ships due to its high strength, low density, no magnetism, corrosion resistance and so on. However, the material nonlinearity brings new challenges to the ultimate strength evaluation on the Titanium structure. This work is to evaluate the ultimate strength for a stiffened titanium cylinder with consideration of material nonlinearity by numerical analysis and scaled model experiment. Firstly, a series of titanium alloy stiffened cylinder pressure hulls are analyzed for their ultimate strength by non-linear Finite Element Method (FEM). Secondly, model tests are carried out for the above titanium cylinders to obtain their ultimate carrying capacity. Thirdly, the good agreement between experiment and numerical results verify that the numerical simulation method is suitable for ultimate strength evaluation. Finally, some influential factors on the ultimate capacity of the stiffened titanium cylinder are investigated, including stiffeners arrangement, thickness of cylinder hulls, inside diameter. The research work can map the limitations of the current rules and to support the development of ultimate strength assessment guidelines for titanium cylinder pressure hulls.

The purpose of this research is the development of new design method for integrating the optimum strength evaluation and the product design which can make the best use of material's characteristics obtained by the experiment and the analysis. Further we do design using high-strength composite material with this developed concept which is different from conventional design. First, to establish this design method of high-strength materials, we examined these materials characteristics and manufacturing methods and the commercialized products. As this research target material, we focus the fiber reinforced materials such as composite with carbon fiber, glass fiber and aramid fiber. Above all, we marked the carbon fiber which has the high specific tensile strength, wear resistance, heat conductivity and conductance. Here, we introduce the fundamental design concept which makes the best use of the design with enough strength.

This paper uses both numerical simulation method and experimental research method to study on welding residual stress of high-strength steel of the cone-cylinder hull. Welding is often accompanied by a larger welding residual stress, which directly affects the safety and service life of the hull structure. In order to obtain the distribution of the welding residual stress, the welding procedure was developed by its parameter language by using FE analysis software in this paper. Then the welding residual stress of hot spot region was measured through X-ray nondestructive testing method, and compared it with simulation results. Finally, considering the residual stress as the initial stress, this paper analyzed dynamic response process of the welding structure under combined actions of the welding residual stress and multiaxial loads, which could more accurately determine the stress of welding structure and the location of fatigue risk point. According to the amplitude of damage parameters and strain time-history curve, we can estimate the fatigue life of structure by selecting the corresponding damage models.

Floating production, storage and offloading systems (FPSOs) have been widely used for the development of offshore oil and gas fields because of their attractive features. They are mostly ship- shaped, either converted from existing tankers or purposely built, and the hull structural scantling design for tankers may be applicable to FPSOs. However, FPSOs have their unique characteristics. FPSOs are sited at specific locations with a dynamic loading that is quite different from those arising from unrestricted service conditions. The structures are to be assessed to satisfy the requirements of all in-service and pre-service loading conditions. The fundamental aspects in the structural assessment of FPSOs are the buckling and ultimate strength behaviors of the plate panels, stiffened panels and hull girders. The focus of this paper is to address the buckling and ultimate strength criteria for FPSO structures. Various aspects of the criteria have been widely investigated, and the results of the design formulae proposed in this paper have been compared to a very extensive test database and numerical results from nonlinear finite element analysis and other available methods. The procedures presented in this paper are based on the outcomes of a series of classification society projects in the development of buckling and ultimate strength criteria and referred to the corresponding classification society publications.

In this study, FE modeling method for the buckling/ultimate strength analysis of a continuous stiffened panel under combined shear and thrust is proposed. In order to validate the proposed method, shear buckling collapse tests of a stiffened panel and FEM analysis are carried out. As the result of these, it is confirmed that the buckling collapse behavior and the ultimate strength estimated by the proposed method are in good agreement with the test results.

AbstractCarbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is the most preferred composite material due to its high strength, high modulus, corrosion resistance and rigidity and which has wide applications in aerospace engineering, automobile sector, sports instrumentation, light trucks, airframes. This paper is an attempt to carry out drilling experiments as per Taguchi’s L27(313) orthogonal array on CFRP under dry condition with three different drill bit type (HSS, TiAlN and TiN). In this research work Response Surface Analysis (RSA) is used to correlate the effect of process parameters (cutting speed and feed rate) on thrust force, torque, vibration and surface roughness. This paper also focuses on determining the optimum combination of input process parameter and the drill bit type that produces quality holes in CFRP composite laminate using Multi-objective Taguchi technique and TOPSIS. The percentage of contribution, influence of process parameters and adequacy of the second order regression model is carried out by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of experimental investigation demonstrates that feed rate is the pre-dominate factor which affects the response variables.

The application of the quenching and partitioning (Q-P) process on advanced high-strength steels improves part ductility significantly with little decrease in strength. Moreover, the mechanical properties of high-strength steels can be further enhanced by the stepping-quenching-partitioning (S-Q-P) process. In this study, a two-stage quenching and partitioning (two-stage Q-P) process originating from the S-Q-P process of an advanced high-strength steel 30CrMnSi2Nb was analyzed by the simulation method, which consisted of two quenching processes and two partitioning processes. The carbon redistribution, interface migration, and phase transition during the two-stage Q-P process were investigated with different temperatures and partitioning times. The final microstructure of the material formed after the two-stage Q-P process was studied, as well as the volume fraction of the retained austenite. The simulation results indicate that a special microstructure can be obtained by appropriate parameters of the two-stage Q-P process. A mixed microstructure, characterized by alternating distribution of low carbon martensite laths, small-sized low-carbon martensite plates, retained austenite and high-carbon martensite plates, can be obtained. In addition, a peak value of the volume fraction of the stable retained austenite after the final quenching is obtained with proper partitioning time.

In this research, an experimental study is conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of high strength reinforced concrete corbels externally bonded with CFRP fabric sheets and Plates with different patterns taking into account the effect of adopted variables in enhancing the ultimate strength; the effect of shear span to effective depth (a/d), configuration, type and amount of bonding. Eleven high strength reinforced corbels were cast and tested under vertical loads. Test results showed there was an improvement in the behavior and load carrying capacity of all strengthened corbels. An increasing in the ultimate strength of strengthened corbel by inclined CFRP strips reached to (92.1%) while the increasing reached to (84.21%) for using one horizontal CFRP Plates compared to un-strengthened reference specimen. Also, it can be conducted that the increase of (a/d) ratio from (0.6 to 0.8) resulted in decreasing by 21.05% in ultimate load capacity of corbels and from (0.4 to 0.6) by 31.25% and 58.69% in cracking and ultimate loads respectively Using CFRP .

Although the value of factor weight in an evaluation work is deterministic, the solving process is random, so connection between weight solution with digital characteristics or distribution functions of specific random variables or random process could be build. Using stochastic simulation method to get a lot of random solutions to the problem, expectation of the random solutions can be used as a estimation solution. On basis of idea of Monte Carlo simulation, this paper analyzed the probability process of calculating factor weight, and provided the procedures of estimating factor weight by means of Monte Carlo simulation. Through discussion and example in this paper, feasibility and validity of this method were proved, which may make foreshadowing for follow-up research work.

ABSTRACTThe aim of the present research work is to investigate the influence of B addition on the phase transformation kinetics under continuous cooling conditions. In order to perform this study, the behavior of two low carbon advanced ultra-high strength steels (A-UHSS) is analyzed during dilatometry tests over the cooling rate range of 0.1-200°C/s. The start and finish points of the austenite transformation are identified from the dilatation curves and then the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams are constructed. These diagrams are verified by microstructural characterization and Vickers micro-hardness. In general, results revealed that for slower cooling rates (0.1-0.5 °C/s) the present phases are mainly ferritic-pearlitic (F+P) structures. By contrast, a mixture of bainitic-martensitic structures predominates at higher cooling rates (50-200°C/s). On the other hand, CCT diagrams show that B addition delays the decomposition kinetics of austenite to ferrite, thereby promoting the formation of bainitic-martensitic structures. In the case of B microalloyed steel, the CCT curve is displaced to the right, increasing the hardenability. These results are associated with the ability of B atoms to segregate towards austenitic grain boundaries, which reduce the preferential sites for nucleation and development of F+P structures.
